Apple hat heute die zweite Beta des iPhone OS 3 für Entwickler freigegeben. Die neue Version trägt die offizielle Bezeichnung iPhone OS beta 2 build 7A259 und lässt sich ab sofort laden. In der Dokumentation lassen sich unter anderem genauere Informationen finden, wie das "In-App-Purchasing" implementiert werden kann, das Apple anlässlich des OS3-Events vorgestellt hatte. iPhone 3.0 beta 2 released, push notifications are a go
The rest of the mobile industry might be gearing up for CTIA to start, but Apple's phone elves are toiling away -- iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2's just been released to developers, along with the go-ahead to start developing for push notification service. Thankfully, beta 2 also apparently includes a number of stability and performance enhancements, which will hopefully make our tester phone tolerable again -- we've been restarting beta 1 basically every day since we sacrificed it to the hands-on gods. 'Apple tax' really Microsoft tax?

MSI officially launches the touchscreen Wind Top AE1900
We caught sight of MSI's Wind Top AE1900 back at Cebit, and now it's been officially launched. The nettop boasts a 19-inch 16:9 LCD, an Intel Atom 230 CPU, up to 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. It's also got a DVD burner, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, WiFi, four USB ports, and a 4-in-1 card reader. MSI claims that the AE1900 uses only about "45 watts of power while in full operation," which, if true, would indeed make it one of the more energy efficient PCs on the market. We'll just have to wait and see on that though, as there's no word yet on availability or pricing.

iPhone apps: SplashPhoto, Agile, Day-n-Night
SplashPhoto ($5) allows users to sync photos between their iPhone or iPod touch and desktop computer. Within the application users can organize photos into albums, upload or download images from Flickr and Picasa and set up a password to keep the photos private. To sync wireless with a desktop users will also need to have the free SplashPhoto Desktop photo manager.

WiBrain M1 UMPC gets more real, but still not completely real
WiBrain's M1 has seen a pretty rocky road to launch since it first arrived on the scene way back last summer, but it looks like the company is finally moving forward with it, and reportedly kicking the UMPC into production. Despite its extended stay in prototype form, however, there doesn't appear to be too many changes to the device, with it still packing a 4.8-inch 1,024 x 600 touchscreen, along with an Atom Z520 processor, up to 1GB of RAM, a max 16GB SSD, and all the connectivity options you'd expect, plus some (presumably optional) HSDPA. T-Mobile: Kostenloses iPhone-Upgrade

Ericsson's 56Mbps HSPA+ speed breaks world record
Ericsson announced on Tuesday that it will demonstrate HSPA data speeds as fast as 56Mbps at the CTIA Wireless convention, which kicks off on Wednesday. The speeds should double those of 28Mbps-capable networks launching in North America, Germany and Italy. Sony senkt Preis der PlayStation 2
Sony hat heute angekündigt, den Preis der PlayStation 2 ab morgen, dem 1. April, von 130 Euro respektive US-Dollar auf 99 Euro/US-Dollar zu senken. Greenpeace slams HP, Lenovo, and Dell in latest report
HP, Lenovo, and Dell haven't fared too badly in some of Greenpeace's previous e-waste reports, but it looks like three companies have fallen well short of the organization's expectations this time around, with each getting called out for failing to live up to their promises. Specifically, all three had said that they would eliminate vinyl plastic (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in their products by the end of this year, but they've now apparently told Greenpeace that they won't be able to meet that timeline, and only Lenovo has come forward set a new deadline (the end of 2010). Macware has launched DiskTools Pro, a collection of utilities for hard disk maintenance on the Mac platform. Samsung HZ15W and hands-on, with friends
We're not exactly enthused at all the granularity makes up Samsung's wide assortment of digital compacts, but it's not like they're the only offenders in the industry. In the high end they've got the HZ15W and TL320 -- we've seen the TL320 and is marvelous analog dials in the wild before, but the HZ15W is a new one on us. Overall the camera is a bit bulky for this segment, and we'd have a hard time sticking it into a pants or jacket pocket without discomfort. Teenage Engineering's OP-1 synthesizer sure to entice Mark Mothersbaugh
We've been thinking about picking up our own little synth lately, so we were pretty stoked to see Teenage Engineering's OP-1 -- even if it's not near production yet. The pocket-sized synthesizer -- which will also double as a controller for a digital workstation -- is going to boast eight synth models and eight samplers, effects, a sequencer and an arpeggiator. There's a built-in mic, speaker, and, excitingly, an FM radio. On the controller side of the device, it's got transport controls, four rotary encoders, plus 16 quick keys. There's no word yet on when (if) this thing will hit the market, though they're taking volunteers for beta testing as of now. Sounds awesome,

Intels neue 10-Watt-CPUs für flache Notebooks sind da
Ohne Ankündigung listet Intel in seiner aktuellen Preisliste auch fünf neue Notebook-Prozessoren. Samsung YP-Q2 and YP-U5 hands-on
Samsung has rounded out its line of DAPs with the new YP-U5 and YP-Q2, both squarely targeted at what have come to be well-defined DAP categories in recent years. The Q2 (pictured) has a friendly icon-based interface, with familiar touch-sensitive controls below the screen -- though we found ourselves futilely tapping at the large bright icons out of habit. Dell Studio XPS 13 unboxing and hands-on
We finally managed to wrestle one of the sleek Studio XPSs from Dell's mitts, and we've got the pics to prove it. At first glance, the 13-inch laptop is striking, with its leather wrapped back and high gloss finish. However, we have a few minor quibbles that make the laptop a little less exciting than we'd hoped. Firstly, the leather is a bit rippled across the top -- not a huge deal, but it skews the "design" aspect here. In a similar fashion, the super-glare display is just as distracting as it is on other screens of this type, and there seems to be another slight ripple -- or wave -- in the plastic (though this isn't wholly uncommon). Sächsische Landesbibliothek stellt Wikimedia 250.000 Fotos zur Verfügung
Wikimedia Commons, ein Schwesterprojekt der Wikipedia, wird in den kommenden Monaten von der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB) 250.000 Bilddateien erhalten. Möglich wird dies durch eine Kooperationsvereinbarung, die die Bibliothek mit Wikimedia Deutschland im März geschlossen hat. Die Deutsche Fotothek der SLUB stellt dem Medienarchiv die Bilder zur freien und kostenlosen Nutzung zur Verfügung.

In braille, a character is made up of six dots laid out on a two by three matrix -- not something that can really be conveyed using capacitive touchscreen technology. Restart not working with multiple users logged in
There is a bug in OS X that may prevent you from quickly shutting down a computer with Fast User Switching enabled, if another user has applications open. When another user account is logged in and running applications, you can either switch to that account and log them out properly, or force their applications to quit by immediately shutting down. If you try the latter of these two options, the system will prompt you for an administrator password to log the other users out. However, supplying the credentials may not work.

Given that most cats aren't really the talkative type, we can definitely understand scoopmycatbox's desire to rig up a water dish (vid's after the break) that does the yapping for his dearest kitty. Put as simply as possible, the ultrasonic water level cat dish combines an Arduino, Parallax range finder, some scrap wood and a good deal of wires in order to measure when the water bowl needs to be refilled. Open CL to become the new Standard?
When Apple announced that Snow Leopard will use the Open CL API, not many analysts or websites had ever heard about it before. things have dramatically changed, and AMD already made demo of GPGPU based on ATi graphic cards via Open CL. If NVidia is heavy relying on its CUDa technology, it recently repeated that it is also supporting this API. It seems that all main players do not want to miss the Open CL train. Technically, ai all graphic card manufacturers/designers consider Open CL as a standard and adopt it, it will make things much easier for all developers and customers. Indeed, any card will be able to interpret instructions and speed some GPGPU processes. In elf Bundesländern können Bürger derzeit per Internet Straftaten wie Diebstahl oder Betrug anzeigen. Erst vor wenigen Monaten hat Sachsen eine Internetwache eingerichtet. Analyst prophezeit wenig Erfolg für neue iPhones
In Zeiten wie diesen nutzen Börsen- und Wirtschaftsanalysten jede Gelegenheit, um zur Abwechslung mal etwas Positives zu sagen – sollte man meinen. Bislang zählte das iPhone und seine im Juni erwartete Neuauflage zu den glücklichen Optimismus-Opfern, doch nun ändert sich auch hier die Stimmung: Die Analysten der Royal Bank of Canada sind eher pessimistisch und sagen einen für Apple deutlich geringeren Erfolg als erwartet mit der Neuauflage des Mobiltelefons voraus.

Both cams share the same 5.1 x 3.6 x 2.1-inch and 13.4 ounce dimensions, 10 megapixel Live MOS sensor with live view, 3.5fps continuous shooting, 2.7-inch LCD, ISO 1,600 max sensitivity, and four thirds lens mount. So what's new? Well, the E-450 has a newer TruePic III+ image processor, a longer 30-minute exposure, improved flash control, and now several "art filter" modes like "pop" and "soft focus" -- pointless if you're doing any kind of post processing on a computer.

Macworld Expo: Nächstes Jahr erst im Februar
"Der Beginn einer neuen Ära", soll sie werden, die Macworld Expo 2010. Zum ersten Mal findet die Fachmesse ohne Publikumsmagneten Apple statt und will trotz ähnlicher Schicksale anderer Messen überleben. While it's not looking too portable, it's a far nimbler setup than the original MRI Scanner first concocted by Honda to control robots in near real-time back in 2006. Acer reportedly launching laptops based on Intel's CULV platform
We don't doubt that Acer's cooking up a few laptops based on Intel's forthcoming consumer ultra low voltage (CULV) platform, but we do have serious reservations about 'em coming out next month. Macworld Expo 2010 changes its dates
When Apple announced its intention not to take part more in Macworld Expo, its organizer, IDG, put on a brave face and announced very quickly the dates of the 2010 expo; that is was to be held January 4. They have just changed their minds and have announced that the expo will be held from the 9 to 13 February, a new period for this show.
This reversal tends to confirm that many members in the Mac world will, probably together with Apple, take part in CES at Las Vegas that will be held 7-10 January. It would have been impossible for IDG to take on such a competition, CES being the largest computer expo in the world.Of course, it remains to be seen if this change of date will be sufficient to convince the exhibitors to go to Macworld.

Samsung shows off Sprint's Instinct Mini
No details are being offered just yet, but Samsung's Korean-language press service has slipped the first official shot of its Instinct Mini (so we think it'll be called, anyhow) for Sprint. At first glance, the phone seems to be considerably more put-together than its older brother -- and if they've managed to iron out all of the software issues that plagued the Instinct's early days, Sprint might just have a winner on its hands. Skype works on AT&T's 3G on iPhone 3.0
We just found something very interesting. When you install Skype on a 3.0 iPhone, you can use AT&T's connection to make and recieve calls. Skype treats the 3G line like any other internet connection. The video is uploading now to youtube and will be posted as soon as it is there.

Western Digital Enters the SSD Market
While we were still questioning when Western Digital will finally enter the SSD market as it can not ignore it, the company just announced the acquisition of Silicon Systems. This company manufactures SSD since years and has a substantial patent portfolio.
While it will cost 65 millions USD, it will give WD the know-how as well as the technology to develop and offer its own SSD models without requiring to license out from Intel or Samsung, or to sale rebranded Intel or Samsung SSD units. Nevertheless, it might take some time for WD to offer its SSD models dedicated to consumer electronics market, as Silicon Digital was specialized in Pro-oriented SSD, a niche market where reliability might be more important than performance.

NVidia and VIA Will Strengthen their Collaboration. Who said a Merger?
NVidia is currently in a difficult position. On one side, the new GPU from ATI/AMD actively competes its leadership in the field. On the other side, Intel is working and acting in order to make NVidia's life as difficult as possible for both the forthcoming GPGPU market, as well as for chipset market, refusing to license its Nehalem technology to NVidia. NVidia Launched New Pro Graphic Cards
NVidia unveiled its new graphic card models dedicated to Pro users: Quadro FX.
The high-end model, aka FW 58000 is quite impressive. It sports 4 GB of VRAM working on a 512 bits bus, offering a theoretical bandwidth of 102 GB/s. Regarding the GPU, we only know that it includes 240 CUDA Parallel Processor Cores. The card remains sober regarding power consumption despite its hardware and should "only" drain 189 W.
We currently do not really understand why Apple did not offer any Pro graphic cards with its new Mac Pro whose prices are rather Pro-oriented. Of course the lack of dedicated drivers might be the explanation, however, Apple and NVidia might be able to work together to make it possible

Electronic Arts Announced that Sims 3 Will Be DRM-Free
We all remember the embarrassing and annoying episode of the unreachable activating servers for the game Spore when it was released. Electronics Arts has decided to add DRM in this game to prevent its illegal distribution on P2 network. At the end it really annoyed people who purchased the game, as pirates quickly found a way to bypass the protection, making it useless. EA even had to use one of the bypass procedure to help customers to activate their legally purchased copy of the game as its serves were not able to deal with the requests.
To avoid any repetition, EA decided that Sim3, whose release date is expected for June 2009, will not include DRMs. It will only be protected by a serial number. this announcement might promote the sale of the game, as some Spore gamers claimed to have downloaded the pirate version of Spore as it was not possible to play with the legal original one.

MLB Application is an...um...home run
You baseball fan/iPhone users won't be able to pass up on this one. MLB.com's At Bat 2009 iPhone application (iTunes Link) includes audio broadcasts for every regular season game for the whole year. Not only that, it has video top play/wrapup of games, play by play graphics and works over AT&T's network, not just Wifi. At $9.99 for the whole year, it seems like a bargain.

Tesla reportedly snags some funding from GE
This isn't fully offiical just yet, but a recently leaked Car and Driver interview with Tesla CEO Elon Musk looks to have all but confirmed that the company received some funding from GE Capital as part of its current $40 million haul. Has Pleo-maker Ugobe folded?
We don't have any official word on this as of yet, but as our main man Ryan Block noted in a tweet earlier (and Wired speculated on back in February), it looks like Pleo-maker Ugobe may -- in fact -- be extinct. As of this writing, the company's site was offline, and calls to the dino-bot factory have gone unanswered (though their voicemail system seems to be humming along just fine). NES Advantage joystick modded for Xbox 360 use
This mod won't exactly help you much with Street Fighter IV or other button intensive games, but those that prefer to pass the time with the likes of Galaga or Xevious may want to strongly consider following the lead of our friend Mr. Pepsi Pants, and breath some new life into that NES Advantage controller collecting dust in your closet. Dell finally adds 720p LCD option to Inspiron Mini 10
So far as we can tell, Dell's Inspiron Mini 10 was supposed to have a 720p screen option from day one, but after the ridiculously weird launch, we're not at all shocked to see that said selection is just now being offered. Starting right about now, prospective Mini 10 buyers can upgrade that stock 1,024 x 576 display to one with a native 1,366 x 768 resolution, or plenty to watch bona fide 720p content. The pain?
