Verizon: We may be talking to Apple about the iPhone at this very second...maybe not
Sick of the Verizon/iPhone news yet? Here's another tidbit: SAI is reporting that a Verizon spokesperson gave them the "I know something I won't tell, I won't tell, I won't tell":
A Verizon Wireless spokesman, reached for comment, did not deny that Verizon is in talks with Apple to sell the iPhone. "We're always ready to talk with suppliers, but nothing to announce today," he said.

Apple Live Chat MobileMe support available
We really like the Live Chat helpdesk idea in general and are glad to see Apple jumping on the bandwagon here. When done correctly and scaled reasonably, it allows a much better experience than talking on the phone. It is also a lot easier to cut and paste from a chat than from a phone conversation.
Hopefully, you won't need it but it is there when you do

MLB app is nearing $1 million revenue mark
According to SAI, MLB.com's At Bat 2009 iPhone application (iTunes Link) is currently the no. 3 app in Apple's iPhone store, and is one of two $9.99 apps in the top 100. It is closing in on a $1 million in revenue on sales of 130,000 downloads at $10/each. Apple's 30% cut is over $300,000. Laser-etched Motherboard mirror reflects art, life, and circuitry
Nonesiste's Motherboard mirror is the kind of design piece that any decoratively-inclined nerd might really want in his / her abode. Its designer, Romolo Stanco, has some really big ideas about the meaning behind the mirror, saying that "the etchings are circuits, an intersection of lines borrowed from the world of electronics, a metaphor for connections, global systems, [and] electronic systems for common use which few of us understand the real technical sense." They're not exactly breaking down any barriers of style or function, but those looking for some straightforward Bluetooth headphones may want to consider one of Sony's latest offerings, which come in both in-ear and over-the-ear varieties. Seagate Replica does automatic, incremental backup for the everyman
Seagate's new Replica drive aims to be for PC users what Time Machine is for Macs (in fact, there's no Mac software included), and seems to do a pretty good job of it. You merely plug the drive into your computer, accept a license agreement, and you're off to the races with hassle-free incremental backups of your system. The drive is available in Single PC and Multi-PC models, with the former sporting 250GB of capacity, and the latter doing 500GB and adding in a vertical dock -- but to actually backup multiple PCs you'll have to move the drive around sneakernet style. Pirate Bay defendants move for retrial
Taking action on earlier accusations, lawyers for The Pirate Bay have submitted a petition for a retrial, according to Reuters. Four of the people behind the website were each sentenced to a year in prison on April 17th, as well as paying $3.6 million in compensation to copyright holders. The judge for the case was unfairly biased however, claims Pirate Bay laywer Per Samuelson.

Bitkom: Elf Millionen Deutsche verkaufen im Internet
Nach Angaben der EU-Statistikbehörde Eurostat haben im vergangenen Jahr mindestens elf Millionen Bundesbürger zwischen 16 und 74 Jahren Waren oder Dienstleistungen online verkauft. NEC-Renesas merger to rival Intel, Samsung
Semiconductor giants NEC and Renesas today said they would merge in a deal likely to change the electronics industry. Just over two months ago, Toshiba was caught showing off 32 nanometer NAND flash chips, and now the firm's gloating about being the world's first to hit the "ship" button. Did Apple Quietly Fire 1,600 Associates?
According to the last figures provided by Apple for its retail division, it included 14,000 employees on March 28th 2009, whereas the same division was counting 15,600 associates at the end of the previous quarter. So, did Apple fire 1,600 collaborators, or it was mostly employees with a time-defined contract?
For sure, many people would like to have information about this topic, especially considering that Apple released better than expected financial figures for the past quarter, making this potential lay out difficult to justify on the short term If Apple indeed fired employees during the last quarter, it would be the first time since 2003, according to our sources.
As we found it out later on and mentionned it in our forum, those figures were not "employees" but FTE (full-time equivalent), so including temporary jobs. In addition, it was unfair to compare with the previous quarter as the latest was including Christmas period and Apple was probably recruiting many temporary jobs to help

Tackling kernel panics, hangs, and unexpected quits.
In the Classic Mac OS, when an application crashed it would usually take down the whole system, requiring a hard reset. Apple largely tackled this in OS X by basing the system off of a UNIX kernel, which basically runs each system process more independently, almost like individual applications. Memory is protected and other resources are shared rather than taken over and as such, an individual application or system process shouldn't take down the whole system when it crashes. There are several crash scenarios that will happen in OS X, and while most should not take down the system, there are a couple that can.

Whoops! Apple miscounted the "Say on Pay" vote, reverses decision
Apple this week informed the SEC that it had miscounted the shareholder votes on the 'Say on Pay' referendum at the February 25th shareholder meeting. The referendum was intended to let shareholders weigh in on policies regarding executive pay and compensation. The mistake was apparently made because Apple recorded the Abstentions as "No" votes.
After the recount, a majority of votes had been cast in favor of the excitingly-named "Shareholder Proposal No. 5 Regarding Advisory Vote on Compensation". Apple chalked the problem up to human error.

KT's Egg gives your WiFi device access to the wonderful world of WiBro
Korea Telecom really wants to get you on the WiBro tip. The aptly-named (if a wee bit uninspired) Egg is essentially a router for connecting WiFi devices (such as the Nintendo DS or iPod Touch) to the company's wireless broadband network. Whoops! Apple miscounted the "Say on Pay" vote, reverses decision
Apple this week informed the SEC that it had miscounted the shareholder votes on the 'Say on Pay' referendum at the February 25th shareholder meeting. The referendum was intended to let shareholders weigh in on policies regarding executive pay and compensation. The mistake was apparently made because Apple recorded the Abstentions as "No" votes.
After the recount, a majority of votes had been cast in favor of the excitingly-named "Shareholder Proposal No. 5 Regarding Advisory Vote on Compensation". Apple chalked the problem up to human error.

Toshiba ships 32nm, 32GB flash memory early
Toshiba on Monday revealed that it has started shipping its 32 nanometer NAND flash memory ahead of schedule. Originally planned for the fall, the higher-density storage is already being sampled today and should be in mass production by July. The process allows a single, thin 32-gigabit (4GB) chip and, with eight stacked chips, will allow 32GB of memory in a single package.

Bitkom: Markt für digitale Spiele wächst zweistellig
Der deutsche Markt für digitale Spiele ist 2008 um 16,9 Prozent auf 2,68 Milliarden Euro gewachsen. Die ursprüngliche Prognose wurde um 4 Prozentpunkte übertroffen. Damit wuchs der Games-Markt im dritten Jahr in Folge zweistellig. In den Vorjahren lagen die Wachstumsraten bei 29 Prozent (2007) und bei 11 Prozent (2006). Back Door in Windows 7
While the last beta version of Windows 7 (RC1000) was released couple of days ago, it can also be found on P2P networks. Two scientists have successfully created a 3 KB piece of code able to bypass all security procedures and to access to data stored in different user accounts installed on the infected computer. According to both scientists, Microsoft will not be able to fix this back door otherwise than rewriting large part of the code.
As one could expect it, this report is heavily commented on the IT-dedicated websites. It is also a good moment to remind all users that the best protection again such attack is not software-based, but hardware. If you do not let free access of your computer to any foreigner, then you should not fear such problems. Jobs battles preservationists to raze historic home
Steve Jobs is set to make yet another attempt to demolish his historic house in Woodside, California, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
