TrainCrop threatens developer over Transit Sydney app
An Australian man has been threatened by RailCorp, New South Wales' state-owned train company, over an iPhone app that provides timetables for the metropolitan CityRail service, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Xbox 360 Elite being phased out in favor or limited edition models?
This one's still a long ways from actually panning out, but Fudzilla is reporting that Microsoft could be about to phase out its standard Xbox 360 Elite console and instead fill out the top end of the scale with limited edition models like the recent Resident Evil 5 bundle. According to the site's unnamed sources, Microsoft would get the transition started by simply letting inventory dry up beginning sometime in the second quarter of this year, during which time it would apparently limit sales of the console to North America and Europe. CE 3100-powered Gigabyte / Yahoo! widgets box eyes-on
A lot has changed in the TV widget world since we first caught wind of Intel's CE 3100 processor and Gigabyte's connected box that took advantage of it. Clevo's beastly 18.4-inch M980NU gaming laptop eyes-on
Ready for the duel of the 18.4-inchers at CeBIT? Just yesterday we took a look at Acer's ginormous Aspire 8930, and today we popped in at Clevo's booth to snap a few shots of its mammoth M980NU. ASUS plans to ship Fold / Unfold laptop concept this year!
It may sound like sheer insanity, but it's the right sort of crazy sauce if you ask us. ASUS is planning to make its Fold / Unfold laptop concept into a for-reals product this year, with plans to ship by Q3. That seems pretty accelerated for something we've only seen in concept form, and something with such a new and interesting form factor -- Fold / Unfold's keyboard slides backwards as you open the display to maximize room for keys, trackpad and palm rest (video of the "folding" action is after the break). We caught up with ASRock's new entrant into the netbook world yesterday, but today it was all about the nettop. On display at the company's CeBIT booth was this gem, the NetTop S330. Showcased in white and some strange, unusual other hue, the box was powered by an Intel Atom 330 processor and supports up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM. Gigabyte shows off GA-IBP Core i5 motherboard at CeBIT
What, what? Core i5? What's that? In short, that's the response we got when prodding for details on this here motherboard at CeBIT, but sure enough, the object you see above just might be the first mainboard shown off designed to play nice with Intel's forthcoming Core i7 lite[TM]. Economy prompts lower AAPL estimates from JP Morgan
News of a worsening recession has led a JP Morgan analyst, Mark Moskowitz, to further reduce estimates for Apple stock. Moskowitz's price target for Apple has been lowered from $102 to $100, and for the 2009 fiscal year, the analyst has cut EPS predictions down from $4.82 to $4.73. In FY10, EPS is expected to be only $5.15 instead of $5.26.

There it is, folks -- the BeBook 2. We knew Endless Ideas was bringing its next-generation BeBook to CeBIT, but we had no idea it'd be this well under wraps. Mac mini gets ripped to shreds, isn't so dull
There's something slightly disconcerting about seeing a fine, new piece of hardware torn apart before your very eyes, but we'll freely admit that we get some satisfaction out of it. The new Mac mini (above) looks about like what you'd expect it to on the inside, and very similar to the previous model, albeit slightly rearranged. Hulu kommt zurück zu Boxee
Mitte Februar musste Boxee Hulu aus dem Programm nehmen, mit einer neuen Alpha-Version von Boxee ist es künftig wieder möglich, Hulu-Inhalte zu nutzen. Cydia to open jailbroken paid app store
Interesting story here. Cydia, the most popular Jailbroken App repository (Installer.app never really recovered from being late to the iPhone 2.0 ballgame), is planning on having a paid apps store. Apple just recently filed a motion that said it thought jailbreaking was copyright infringement and a DMCA violation so obviously this isn't something Apple would be too happy about. Plus there is that 30% of app cuts and AT&T isnt going to be happy about me buying PDANet either.

UK college begins testing facial recognition attendence system
It's something we never really appreciated when waltzing into class way back when, but the ability to show up at your leisure without having to "clock in" and "clock out" was awesome. Botnet-Betreiber muss vier Jahre ins Gefängnis
John Schiefer, Betreiber eines Botnets, wurde am Mittwoch in Los Angeles zu einer vierjährigen Haftstrafe ohne Bewährung und einer Geldstrafe von 2500 Dollar verurteilt. Das teilte das US-Justizministerium mit. Der 27-Jährige bekannte sich schuldig, ein Botnet mit mehreren hunderttausend Zombie-Computern aufgebaut zu haben. Damit wurde in den USA erstmals ein Botnet-Betreiber von einem Gericht verurteilt.

Casio's burst-recordin' EX-FC100 pocket cam reviewed
It's not enough for pocket cams to just shoot high-def video any more. Oh no, they have to do something fancy with it, like Casio's EX-FS10 and EX-FC100, both offering capture at up to 1,000 fps. Als Nutzer von Flickr und iPhoto ärgerte ich mich im iPhoto-’09-Test sehr über die halbherzige Flickr-Uploadfunktion, die in iPhoto integriert wurde. Gerade wenn man mal schnell einen ganzen Haufen Fotos hochladen möchte, ist es einfach zu umständlich.

Cydia to open jailbroken paid app store
Interesting story here. Cydia the most popular Jailbroken App repository (Installer.app never really recovered from being late to the iPhone 2.0 ballgame) is planning on having a paid apps store. Apple just recently filed a motion that said it thought jailbreaking was copyright infringement and a DMCA violation.

Viele Neuerungen: Firefox soll auf Version 3.5 springen
Unter Berufung auf ein Status-Meeting der Firefox-Entwickler vom 4. März berichtet heise, dass die nächste Version des Browsers vermutlich die Versionsnummer 3.5 tragen wird. Man möchte damit die hohe Anzahl der Neuerungen respektive die Leistungssteigerung verdeutlichen. Firefox 3.0.8 wird für Mitte April erwartet, die dritte Beta der 3.1-Version soll am 12. März freigegeben werden. Eine vierte Beta-Version soll mindestens noch erscheinen, so heise.

Dance Dance Remote Control adds a few steps to your TV experience
Crazy us, we thought that a remote control was meant to keep you on the couch -- it does seem rather counter-intuitive to build one that makes you leave your seat and jump around within arm's reach of the TV set. But when this guy saw an over-sized novelty remote at Brookstone, he knew that he had to have it. Not only that, but he had to best it -- by fashioning a controller for Windows Media Center so large that one would need an entire appendage to get any use out of the thing. Our intrepid modder achieved his goal by stitching together two PS2 Dance Dance Revolution mats, a PS2-to-PC controller converter box, and some homebrew source code. What can we say about this? Im Juli des vergangenen Jahres wurden im App Store knapp 600 Programme eingereicht und manch einer frohlockte, welch unglaubliche Vielfalt sich dadurch bietet. Mit "Fingertouch" hat Opera seinen Handybrowser Opera Mobile in Version 9.5 um eine Funktion erweitert, die die Bedienung per Touchscreen und Finger vereinfachen soll. Pretec intros first SDXC card, 133MB/s CF card
Pretec has used CeBIT to launch two flash memory cards that are each claimed as record setters. The company's 32GB SDXC card is the first in the world to be announced using the new SDXC format; although it doesn't push past the 32GB limit of SDHC, it transfers data more quickly than large-capacity SDHC cards and reaches up to 50MB per second.

We're still looking at another 3 to 5 years of development here, but transparent OLED lighting panels are definitely on the way. This 12-centimeter prototype panel developed by Philips Research is transparent until flipping the switch for illumination. Unfortunately, the panels are currently limited in size due to complexities in the manufacturing process that necessitate a clean-room environment. CeBIT 2009: vRec+ macht den iPod zum Videorekorder
Es kommt leider nicht oft vor, dass man unter den zahlreichen Klein-Ausstellern aus Fernost Produkte entdeckt, die ansatzweise innovativ sind. Zukunftspläne von Firefox: Keine Version 3.1 sondern großer Sprung auf 3.5
Seit Monaten machen inzwischen Berichte die Runde, dass Mozilla größere Schwierigkeiten damit hat, den Zeitplan für Firefox 3.1 einzuhalten. Schon mehrfach mussten Termine verschoben werden, in erster Linie verantwortlich ist dafür die neue JavaScript-Engine "TraceMonkey". PC-Markt: IDC erwartet Wachstum im vierten Quartal
IDC erwartet, dass der PC-Markt im laufenden Jahr um 4,5 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr schrumpfen wird. Für das erste Halbjahr prognostizieren die Marktforscher einen Rückgang der Verkaufszahlen um acht Prozent. In den zweiten sechs Monaten soll sich die Lage jedoch wieder bessern. Das auf Computersicherheit spezialisierte Unternehmen Secunia hat den jährlichen Bericht über Sicherheitsmängel von Webbrowsern veröffentlicht. Die mit großem Abstand meisten Lücken wies im vergangenen Jahr Firefox auf. So mussten 115 Lücken geschlossen werden. Secunia: Firefox hat mehr Schwachstellen als Konkurrenz-Browser
Mozilla hat im vergangenen Jahr mehr Schwachstellen in Firefox gemeldet als Microsoft, Opera und Apple in ihren jeweiligen Browsern zusammen. Dies geht aus einer Statistik von Secunia hervor. NASA's Kepler spacecraft ready to begin searching for other, cooler "earths"
NASA's just declared its Kepler spacecraft "ready to launch." In case you're not already in the know on this one, the Kepler's mission will be to jaunt out into space, then watch a massive patch of it for 3.5 years to see if there are any signs of habitable planets similar to Earth. The craft will be looking mostly for planets that revolve around stars similar to the Sun, and it will be able to watch about 100,000 of them continuously, unlike the beleaguered but awesome Hubble telescope. The Kepler has a 0.95-meter diameter telescope, and the project has been in the works for about 25 years. It will finally launch on Friday, on a Delta 2 rocket. Japaner lieben Umfragen und zumindest wenn Frauen zwischen 20 und 26 gefragt werden, lieben sie auch das Design von Apple-Produkten. Befragt wurden 1102 junge Frauen in den drei großen Wirtschaftsmetropolen Tokyo, Osaka und Nagoya. Yeah, we already heard that Dell's Phenom II-equipped XPS 625 was a solid value, but what does that really mean? Entwickeln für das iPhone kann ein riskantes Geschäft sein, denn wenn Apple ein Programm ablehnt, waren die ganzen Investitionen umsonst. AMD: 32-nm-Prozessoren bereits 2010

Time Capsule and Airport Extreme update 7.4.1
For those of you wondering whether or not old Time Capsules and Airport Extremes would get the new Time Capsule and Airport extreme functionality, we have some good news and bad news. After updating to 7.4.1 we learn that Apple has given us one out of three.
The bad news is that guest networking and dual band support aren't available. It looks like that is a hardware-only update (meaning you'll have to buy a new one).
The good news is that if you have MobileMe and use Back to my Mac, you'll be able, as of the 7.4.1 update, to access the data on your Airport Extreme USB Drive or Time Capsule over the Internet. Visit Apple's page on the updates for all of the juicey details on update 7.4.1.

ASUS debuts EzLink Series, VH192C / VH196 Green LCDs at CeBIT
Just when you thought you'd heard the last from ASUS at CeBIT, in flies this. Here in Hannover, the outfit has broadened its reach by introducing a few new monitors, with the EzLink Series piquing our interest the most. The simply titled Wireless LCD Monitor can reportedly be connected via the Wireless Host Controller Interface (WHCI) or USB Host Wire Adapter (HWA), essentially turning it into a more recognizable USB monitor. Time Capsule and Airport Extreme update 7.4.1
For those of you wondering whether or not old Time Capsules and Airport Extremes would get the new Time Capsule and Airport extreme functionality, we have some good news and bad news. The bad news is that guest networking dual band support aren't available. It looks like that is a hardware-only update (meaning you'll have to buy a new one). The good news is that if you have MobileMe and use Back to my Mac, you'll be able, as of the 7.4.1 update, to access the data on your Airport Extreme USB Drive or Time Capsule over the Internet.
It would be really kind of non-douche-baggy of Apple to allow non-MobileMe users to use Dynamic DNS from the Airport, instead of making people shell out $100 for this capability. We aren't holding our breath.

Peek finds that Costco customers greatly prefer lifetime subscriptions
We're not about to say "we told you so," but Peek's own David Madden has contacted us with a detail so telling that we simply had to pass it on. In an effort to understand whether the email-only handheld really would sell better if not hamstrung by monthly fees, it has been offering it up in two forms at Costco. A "$44 + monthly fees" package and an all-inclusive "Peek-for-life" bundle that sells for $399. If all goes according to plan, Samsung's more-than-a-netbook NC20 is just a day away from its official American release, and, on this momentous eve, Laptop has graced us all with a full review of the thing -- or the Korean version, at least. Persistent problem of iTunes not being able to burn CDs

Some users have had issues when burning CDs in iTunes 8, where either the program will not give a burn option, or will only partially burn a CD and result in an unusable disc.

Corsair launches Voyager Port at CeBIT: eyes-on
In an effort to better market its flash drives as more than just this generation's floppy drive, Corsair has stepped up at CeBIT this year to introduce the Voyager Port. Put simply, this flash drive dock connects to one's PC and provides one-touch backup straight to whatever USB stick is plugged in. By including the NovaBackup 10 software, the docking station transfers a copy of a user's hard drive to any USB drive (provided that it's large enough), and while you may argue that an external HDD could do just the same, this could be a cheaper option for someone who already threw down for a capacious USB stick. Pixelar e-Reader reviewed - not too shabby, also not a Kindle
Slash Gear starts its hands-on review of Pixelar's e-book reader by stating the obvious: "this is no Amazon Kindle 2." MSI debuts three new Classic Series laptops
MSI has certainly already made a respectable enough showing for itself at CeBIT this year, but it looks like company isn't done just yet, with it now getting official with three new "Classic Series" laptops. Those include CX700, CX600, and CR400, which each pack 16:9 screens of 17.3, 16, and 14-inches, respectively, along with ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330 graphics on the CX700 and CX600, and an NVIDIA Geforce 8200MG GPU on the more energy-efficient CR400. Nvidias x86-Prozessor kommt in 2-3 Jahren

Intel aktualisiert Notebook-Plattform ab Q2/2009
Intels Desktop- und Notebook-Briefing am Donnerstag auf der CeBIT brachte keine wirklichen Neuerungen ans Tageslicht. Einzig und allein ein Refresh der Montevina-Plattform, die aktuell unter dem Centrino-2-Logo läuft, wird bereits im zweiten Quartal eingeführt.

HDMI-equipped ASUS Eee Box 206 eyes-on
A number of you bemoaned the fact that MSI's WindBOX lacked an oh-so-necessary HDMI port, so maybe the better option for you is an LCD mounted Eee Box 206. Yep, the HD-minded mini PC was set up here in Hannover, with one of the units hosted up nicely on the rear of a flat-panel monitor. The fit was flush and the connections were easily accessible, so those looking for a nice, if not underpowered media center should definitely give this one a glance. Netzteile: Es ist fast alles Gold was glänzt

Analyst: Apple so far unaffected by PC price collapse
Apple has so far avoided the "permanent and structural" collapse of overall PC average selling prices and subsequent decline in revenue, according to TBR analyst Ezra Gottheil. The trend is explained by the ongoing economic recession and the gaining popularity of low-priced netbooks. Combining numbers from Apple, Dell, HP and Lenovo, the analyst saw a 13 percent drop in average selling price (ASP)
