Former Gizmondo chief Stefan Eriksson lands back in jail, in Sweden
While there's been no shortage of fresh Gizmondo rumors over the past year or so, we haven't heard much of anything about former bigwig Stefan Eriksson, who's known as much for a little car crash as he is for the company he helped bring into infamy. That looks to have changed in a big way this week, however, as Herr Eriksson has now landed back in jail in Sweden, where he's facing a whole slew of new, very serious charges, including extortion, aggravated assault, grand theft, embezzlement, and a firearms violation. No word on a new trial date or anything just yet, but it looks like

The jury's still out on whether or not Nintendo follows our logic and is gonna release the Wii MotionPlus attachment before June 18th, the day Electronic Arts debuts the first compatible game Grand Slam Tennis. iPod shuffle 3G pumping up the jams a little too hard at the gym?
Seeing as a good number of people pick up iPod shuffles for use while working out, this might be a bit of an issue. An Apple thread discussion has blossomed with reports that the 3rd gen unit's gone sentient and is maxing out the volume while users are doing cardio. The conjecture is that its volume control-equipped headphones might not be moisture resistant and is having averse reactions to sweat. Of course, we could take the "it's a feature, not a bug approach" and assume Apple's simply added a hidden sweat detector to crank it based on the workout intensity. Other devices may have made it to the mark a bit quicker but, any way you shake it, selling 50 million of any consumer electronics device is pretty darn impressive, especially when the device in question is often laden with contracts and hefty monthly bills. Time Machine backup error: Too big for backup volume
Some people may experience issues with Time Machine reporting that the backup they intend to make is too big for the designated backup volume. Time Machine analyzes the data that is about to be backed up and compares it with the space left on the backup drive. PhotoLine in Version 15.03 erhältlich

Diese Version ist so frisch, dass noch nicht mal auf der Herstellerseite Informationen bekannt sind, was sich seit Version 15.02 verändert hat, die erst vor ein paar Tagen herauskam. Micron meldet 751 Millionen Dollar Quartalsverlust
Micron Technology hat in seinem zweiten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 5. März) einen Nettoverlust von 751 Millionen Dollar oder 0,97 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. Deleting individually selected files from the trash (or anywhere)
Mac OS X has a simple method for managing trashed items: The user selects a file to be deleted, sends it to the trash, and then empties the trash. The only additional feature built into OS X is the option to securely empty the trash, where the system will overwrite the file several times to ensure the magnetic patterns on the drive representing the file get altered enough that it is virtually impossible to recover them.
This simplicity can be quite limiting because it forces you to use the trash only as a temporary storage space for ALL enclosed items before they're permanently removed. There is no way to customize this behavior, but many people have inquired about being able to easily remove one or two items without removing the rest, essentially wishing to enable more flexibility in the default trash behavior.

Chiphersteller hoffen auf langsamere Abwärtsentwicklung
Der weltweite Absatz von Halbleitern war auch im Februar 2009 weiter rückläufig. Artificial Intelligence solves boring science experiments, makes interns obsolete
Researchers at Aberystwyth University in Wales have developed a robot that is being heralded as the first machine to have discovered new scientific knowledge independently of a human operator. Named Adam, the device has already identified the role of several genes in yeast cells, and has the ability to plan further experiments to test its own hypotheses. iPod Shuffle 3G: Probleme mit dem Lautstärkeregler
Im Apple Support-Forum bemängeln verschiedene Besitzer des neuen iPod shuffle Probleme mit dem Schalter im Ohrhörerkabel. Unter Einfluss von Feuchtigkeit verändert sich offensichtlich die Lautstärke der Wiedergabe eigenmächtig und der Schalter reagiert nach kurzer Zeit gar nicht mehr.
Ob es sich dabei um ein generelles Problem handelt, oder Schalter nur bei einer begrenzten Gerätezahl nicht ausreichend gegen Feuchtigkeit geschützt ist, bleibt vorerst offen. Wir freuen uns daher über eure Erfahrungsberichte in den Kommentaren oder im iFUN-Forum. Bislang liegen uns jedenfalls noch keine derartigen Berichte aus Deutschland vor.
Ein Workaround für betroffene Shuffle-Besitzer existiert bereits: Ein User im Apple-Forum kam auf die Idee, eine Schleife ins Kabel zu machen. Der Schweiß läuft dann nicht mehr am Kabel entlang in den Schalter

Sometimes-reliable Digitimes is reporting that Apple will have a 3.2 Megapixel camera sensor on its next iPhone. The brief report states:
OmniVision has received 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for Apple's next-generation iPhone, according to market sources. The company is also said to have secured 5-megapixel CIS orders for another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year.

OmniVision has received 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for Apple's next-generation iPhone, according to market sources. The company is also said to have secured 5-megapixel CIS orders for another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year.

Apparently News Corp. chairman and multi-billionaire Rupert Murdoch likes the Kindle. Apple hat laut einem Bericht von DigiTimes eine neue Bestellung an Bilder-Sensoren für das iPhone aufgegeben. For those of us still on the Apple enterprise bandwagon (95% of you can disregard), Xserve refresh times are an important thing to gage when making purchases. Bericht: IBM reduziert Gebot für Sun
Wie das Wall Street Journal (WSJ) berichtet, stehen die Verhandlungen zur Übernahme von Sun Microsystems durch IBM vor ihrem Abschluss. Dem WSJ zufolge will IBM 9,55 Dollar pro Sun-Aktie zahlen. Damit hätte die Transaktion einen Gesamtwert von ungefähr 7 Milliarden Dollar. Gegenüber IBMs erstem Angebot sinkt der Kaufpreis demnach um ungefähr 750 Millionen Dollar. The Taiwan rumor-rag just served up a doozy calling for Apple's "next-generation iPhone" to be equipped with a 3.2 megapixel CMOS sensor from OmniVision. Bericht: Französische SAP-Kunden verlangen Gleichstellung mit deutschen Firmen
Wie das französische Magazin Le Mag IT gestern berichtete, schlägt die Vereinigung der französischsprachigen SAP-Anwender (USF) im Streit um Wartungsgebühren gegenüber SAP jetzt einen schärferen Ton an. In einer Mitteilung fordert sie für ihre Mitglieder in Frankreich, Algerien, Belgien, Kanada, Marokko der Schweiz und Tunesien eine Gleichstellung mit deutschen und österreichischen SAP-Kunden. Diese hatten im vergangenen Jahr eine Anpassung der durch SAP geplanten Tariferhöhungen durchgesetzt. In allen anderen Ländern verlangt SAP dieses Jahr acht Prozent mehr Wartungsgebühren für seine Software.

Das vor einer Woche angekündigte, geplante Objective-C- und Cocoa-Seminar im Raum Zürich wird nun definitiv im April stattfinden. Das zweitätige Seminar wird am Donnerstag 23. und Freitag 24. Skype beschwert sich über T-Mobile
Wie wir berichteten, denkt T-Mobile darüber nach, die Nutzung von Skype respektive VoIP-Telefonie auf dem iPhone im mobilen Datennetz und T-Mobile-Hotspots komplett zu sperren. BKA dementiert Erhalt von Telekom-Kundendaten zur Rasterfahndung
Das Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) hat einen Bericht der Frankfurter Rundschau als haltlos zurückgewiesen, laut dem die Deutsche Telekom der Strafverfolgungsbehörde nach dem 11. September 2001 Millionen von Kundendaten für eine Rasterfahndung zur Verfügung gestellt hat. VLC Media Player Version 0.9.9
Der Alleskönner unter den Mediaplayern ist in Version 0.9.9 auch für den Mac erschienen. Das Bugfix-Release verbessert unter anderem die Videoperformance auf Intel-Macs. Olympus plans 50 year anniversary party for diminutive Pen camera
Aw, how cute. 50 years ago, Olympus set the 35mm film camera market on its head with the remarkably small "Pen" line. These half-frame cameras were thought to be as portable as ink pens back in the day, thus earning them the name. Production ceased sometime in the 80s (that whole decade is really just a haze), but that's not stopping the prideful historians at the company from throwing a 50 year anniversary bash over in Tokyo. Geocaching fürs iPhone in Version 2.0
Ein halbes Jahr alt (damals hier von uns vorgestellt), liegt das "offizielle" Geocaching App (7,99 Euro) nun in Version 2.0 vor.
Die wichtigste Neuerung ist sicherlich die Integration von Kartenmaterial, der stetige Wechsel zwischen den Google-Karten und dem Geocaching App fällt somit zukünftig weg. Zudem wurde die Benutzerführung verbessert und diverse Fehler behoben. Ein paar Screenshots gibts nach dem Klick.

Silent update of Apple Xserves happening...any...minute...now...
For those of us still on the Apple enterprise bandwagon (95% of you can disregard), Xserve refresh times are an important thing to gage when making purchases. You don't want to be on the tail end of a cycle and end up with a product that has been refreshed before you've even had a chance to deploy. If you are in that camp, do not buy an Xserve yet. Apple is about to do an update the Xserve line to the Nahalem architecture. It doesn't appear that much else will change.

Radeon HD 4890: First Benchmarks Rather Disappointing
The NDA ended yesterday for the RAdeon HD 4890, and several dedicated websites have flooded the net with numerous tests, all aiming to demonstrate if the Radeon HD 4890 is the expected killer graphic card.
As a reminder, it features a higher clocked GPU (100 MHz) and memory (75 MHz) when compared to the Radeon HD 4870. Performance are globally in line the clock frequency difference or gain, however the card seems to be rather noisy. this might be the cost to pay for a card with a high potential to be overclocked (most card tested have reached 1 GHz for the GPU).

Is Microsoft preparing an iPhone version of its Office Suite?
According to Eweek, quoting Stephen Elop, director of Microsoft Professional Division, Microsoft might be offering in the future an Office Suite dedicated to the iPhone. IT will of course be a reduced version with less features, but one would be able to edit files.It is rather amazing how Microsoft is able to close its eyes on past or on-going conflicts or fights with Apple when there is an opportunity to get market share on a new growing market, as they were not able to create it. New flat-speaker tech could make public places even louder
Flat-panel speakers are nothing new, but a new version of the tech could one day replace boomy public address systems with hidden speakers that produce easier-to-hear audio in large spaces. Under development at the University of Warwick, FFL ("flat flexible loudspeaker") speakers are actually a thin laminate made of layers of conducting and insulating material that resonate when electricity is passed through them -- the crisper, clearer audio is a result of the entire surface creating sound in phase at once, which allows it to produce highly directional audio. Since they're so thin and flexible, FFL speakers can be hidden nearly anywhere -- behind signage, in the ceiling, or even painted and hung directly on the wall. Verizon starts offering MP3 music on the web
Verizon this afternoon chose CTIA as the venue to launch MP3 music downloads on its media store. The move brings about 5 million of the unprotected tracks and complements the ringtones that have dominated the company's web store in the past.
