Exhaustive netbook battery comparison finds a clear winner, no victims
It's hardly the first netbook battery comparison to appear in the Thunderdome that is the internet, but this latest thirteen-strong round-up from Australia's NetbookReview is one of the more comprehensive to emerge as of late, with it only slightly compromised by a few netbooks that aren't available in the site's home country. Not surprisingly, the netbooks equipped with six-cell batteries came out well ahead of their less well off counterparts, with the MSI Wind U115 Hybrid leading the way with an impressive time of 6:56. That was obviously aided in no small part by the netbook's dual SSD / hard drive setup, and by a less commonly used 5100mAh six-cell battery, as opp

Funai wins a round vs. Vizio, trade commission blocks TV imports
Just when it looked like the long-running patent dispute was tipping Vizio's way, the U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled in favor of Funai, issuing an order to block imports of Vizio HDTVs. According to Bloomberg the ban is still eligible to be reviewed by President Obama while the patent case itself is still being reviewed by an appeals court, but if Vizio wants to keep its shipments flowing it will have to post a bond of $2.50 per television. We've put a call in to Vizio to find out what this means for its immediate future -- and that

Xbox 360 Elite bundle rumored to include Halo 3 and Fable 2 for $400
Don't get all loony just yet -- this one's still a long, long way from panning out -- but ArsTechnica has it from a reliable mole that Microsoft is gearing up to ship an even more attractive Xbox 360 Elite. One that comes bundled with hits Halo 3 and Fable 2 for the same $400 that the console alone runs you now. We already heard last month that Microsoft was considering phasing out the standard Elite in favor of bundled "limited edition" models, so that certainly jibes. Though, we will caution you that

Sprint puts a vacation blackout on May -- Palm Pre launch likely?
Well, we're circling in, folks. Hot on the heels of learning that Sprint employees have the Palm Pre in hand for training, there's word from all sides that Sprint has put a vacation blackout on the month of May for retail employees, which would seem to imply that the Pre will be launched sometime in there. We saw similar vacation freezes on AT&T's end for both iPhone launches, and those ended up fairly accurate. We haven't seen this memo personally, or threatened any Sprint employees for confirmation with shivs fashioned out of Samsung Instincts yet, so we'll keep an eye out for any other information to confirm or

T-Mobile UK event same day as USA's, will be BlackBerry-focused
T-Mobile UK has decided to throw a little shindig for members of the press the very same day as its Yankee cousin -- this coming 21st -- but there's a very important distinction with the UK event: it drops a hint about what they'll be announcing. It turns out that they'll be launching an "exciting new BlackBerry collaboration," which we can only take to mean a new handset; now, the only question is whether these events are synchronized. If they are, that means we'll be getting new RIM goodies on T-Mobile USA, but if it isn't, this means precisely zilch for American subscribers. Historically, the US branch has been pretty out of sync with it European c

Apple's computers are going to decide who the winner is and if their algorithm stays the same, that will be the early hours of April 20th. Some of our slightly OCD commenters told us so. Intel applies "stars" ratings to processors, processors lose self-esteem
It looks like those confused by the multitude of Intel processors out there needn't linger in indecision any longer, as Intel itself has now come up with a new scheme that it hopes will help simplify the buying process significantly. As you can see above, that consists of a new rating system that gives processors between one and five stars, which Intel says indicates "relative performance, not a price-performance type of thing." As you might expect, the five-star rating is reserved for the like of the Core i7 and Core i7 Extreme, with the one-star ranks apparently occupied solely by various Celeron processors -- the Atom, it seems, is in a class all its own. Somewhat less notably, Intel has also taken the

Wearable blood pressure monitor: portable and fashionable
We've seen some wild ideas when it comes to blood pressure -- including, yes, underpants -- but this newest device, a small monitor attached to the hand, which can be worn 24 hours a day for continuous monitoring, strikes us as having the potential for extreme usefulness. The monitor works differently than regular old blood pressure cuff, using a method called pulse wave velocity, which measures the pulse at two points along an artery. Built by a team of engineers at MIT, this prototype could boast a lot of advantages over monitors, including its portability, its ability to see long-term patterns of rises and falls in p

The lower level folks will have to suffer through the same slide deck a few days later, which leads us to believe that the carrier is just hours, days or millenniums away from spilling more details about this whole initiative. Chrysler Peapod to use iPhone as auto Navigation/Entertainment system
Engadget interviewed Peter E. Arnell about the new Peapod electric car in lower Manhattan yesterday. While it is a nice sub-30 MPH concept at a kind of steep $12,000 price tag, what caught our attention was that the iPhone or iPod touch was the center of the car's navigation, carbon footprint info and entertainment system (See 2:15 min in). It wouldn't really be a stretch to see other car manufacturers following suit here. In fact, with the 1000 new APIs that include external device control as well as allowing external devices to control the iPhone/iPod, there have to be some exciting app development opportunities in the automotive area. EMTEC's Gdium netbook reviewed: colorful case hides an underwhelming device
When you're drowning in a flood of copycat netbooks it's hard to not to be drawn to one that's a little different, one like EMTEC's Gdium, bravely forgoing internal storage in favor of a 16GB thumb drive "G-Key" and willfully ignoring the ubiquitous Atom processor. But, such attraction only gets you past so many inadequacies, and according to Laptop Magazine's review this one has plenty. Its customized Linux interface was said to be nice, but that 900MHz MIPS architecture couldn't even keep up with average netbooks, its touchpad was borderline unusable, and after a few moments placed on a lap the thing turned into a 112-degree oven -- just the sort of thing that won't do

An unintentional leak late Thursday has shown a major revision to TechCrunch's CrunchPad touchscreen tablet. Chrysler Peapod to use iPhone as auto Navigation/Entertainment system
Engadget interviewed Peter E. Arnell about the new Peapod electric car in lower Manhattan yesterday. While it is a nice sub-30 MPH concept at a kind of steep $12,000 price tag, what caught our attention was that the iPhone or iPod touch was the center of the car's navigation and entertainment system. It wouldn't really be a stretch to see car manufacturers following suit here. In fact, with the 1000 new APIs that include external device control as well as allowing external devices to control the iPhone/iPod, there have to be some exciting app development opportunities in the automotive area. Developers? Are you listening?

DXG's latest camcorders sport the Burberry and Chanel look, KIRF-style
Unimpressed by DXG's lineup of value-priced but generally underwhelming video recording options? Maybe a few trendy pattern appliques will change your mind. The company's apparently gone down to Canal Street, grabbed a few "discount" handbags, and turned them into gaudy camcorders that promise 720p capture at 30fps. They're set to retail for a mere $129, and while the company's pledging they'll be available at stores like Radio Shack and Walmart later this summer, we're thinking there are probably a few trademark attorneys out there with a thing or two to say about that.Filed under:

Resin replaces ITO in latest flexible OLED prototype
Make no mistake, wrapping your mind around the build of an OLED panel is mighty tough to do. Without getting you mired in technobabble, let's just say that indium tin oxide (ITO) has generally been a mainstay in every single OLED that was produced commercially. Now, a team of researchers from AGFA-Gevaert, IMEC, Holst Centre and Philips have prototyped a 12- x 12-centimeter flexible OLED lighting panel that swaps out the ITO for highly-conductive transparent resin electrodes. You see, it's been difficult for OLED builders to secure enough electrical conductivity of ITO in a low-temperature process, and this new methodology is perfectly suited for the coat

Vandals take down Internet, emergency, and voice services in California
Feeling vulnerable? Maybe you should. Police in California suspect exactly that after "vandals" cut 10 fiber optic cables (each containing between 48 and 360 fibers) at 4 locations on Thursday morning. The AT&T and Sprint cables knocked "tens of thousands" of San Francisco, Bay Area residents off the grid including an additional 52,000 Verizon landline and wireless customers. The MP3 market is saturated ?
A recent survey by Piper Jaffray of American students tends to prove that the market of the MP3 players is close to saturation. The latest figures to date show that 92% of them have already a MP3 player. The remainder of the figures shows the dominance of Apple in this market:
86% have an iPod compared to 4% with a Zune and 2% with a Sony.
100% would buy a iPod if they wanted to buy a new MP3 player in the 12 next months
27% would not exceed $100 for this purchase, 34% would go up to $200, 29% up to $300 and 10% beyond that.
This last point appears to contradict the fact that Apple has saturated this market. There is an enormous potential of renewal of the iPod classic and nano towards the ipod touch that will become the reference for all those who do not want an iPhone or more particularly to pay the subscription price.

Screen grabs: Liz Lemon dons mock turtleneck, invokes Reality Distortion Field to save TGS's budget
Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.
When TGS is faced with budget cuts on 30 Rock, Tina Fey's character Liz Lemon did the only thing she knew to do: appeal to her superiors with a full-on Steve Jobs impression, mock turtleneck and all. Of course, if she was really Steve Jobs, that turtleneck would've fired three writers on the spot and introduced the Tracey Jordan Nano. Check out the three pillars key to her show's success in the gallery and video after the break.Galle

Verizon's Casio Exilim C721 confirmed in the middle of a steamy shower scene
Wanted our attention, Casio? Well, good, because you've definitely got it. This isn't necessarily full disclosure of the phone's existence, but for all practical purposes, this uh, "promotional video" finally fesses up that the Exilim C721 is coming to Verizon (you can catch a glimpse of the carrier's logo if you look closely -- no, not that closely, you sicko). As you might have gathered, our ladyfriend here is using the phone's 5 megapixel cam to snap some naughty shots for her sweetheart, all from the comfort of a warm shower -- thanks in no small part to the phone's water-resistant characteristics. Still no word on pricing, availability,

New Laptop Hunters ad proves Macs are just for children
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/microsoft/New_Microsoft_Laptop_Hunters_ad_says_Macs_are_for_kids'; Microsoft's latest installment in its popular series of ripped-from-the-headlines, "real America" style 'puter-buying adventures follows a mom and son duo -- Lisa and Jackson. We learn during the commercial that the two need a computer which is "fast" because they need to "look up stuff" before they "get to baseball." Luckily for them, there are plenty of great PC options for their under-$1500 budget. Sure, they veer off in the middle there, almost buying a Mac -- which Lisa notes are "popular at this age" (we guess what she meant to say is that they'r

Unibody iPods?
iPodNN is reporting that Apple has patented the application of the Unibody process to iPods. The one picture, the Classic, seems to be heading towards EOL in a generation or two so that's not terribly exciting. What would be VERY interesting is if they applied that to the iPod touch and iPhone. Mockup artists, that's your cue. Meet us in the comments?

Leaked pics of the CrunchPad make it look dangerously close to availability
Thanks to a slip of the fingers on Posterous (and Robert Scoble's serious Twitter addiction), new images of Michael Arrington's pet Internet-tablet project -- the CrunchPad -- have shown up looking very, very close to a finished product. As you can see in the gallery below, the (supposedly) $200, WiFi enabled pad has gotten dressed up in multiple colors and been shoved into some fairly handsome looking packaging. There's no telling if this means the device is any closer to a buy-able reality, but one thing is for sure: a microblog is no place for secrets.

DARPA on the lookout for robotic 'power skin'
DARPA has put out an RFI for something called Power Skin. The technology is conceived as a structural material that would provide "its own day and night power to be used as an independent power source and, simultaneously, serve as the structural material" for robots (see our conceptual rendering above) and unmanned aerial vehicles. Ultimately, the military-industrial complex would like to see you develop something that would allow the aforementioned UAVs "indefinite flight endurance," although they'd be totally into it if you could demonstrate continuous flight for a mere four days. Nintendo president squashes talk of Wii price cuts
Incredible as it sounds, it looks like Nintendo isn't planning on slashing the price of the console it can still barely keep on store shelves. That word comes straight from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who's attempting to clamp down on recent speculation that a Wii price cut could be in the offing, which seemed at least a tad more plausible considering that the manufacturing costs for the console have supposedly dropped significantly since its launch. According to Iwata, rather than trying to drive up sales numbers even further with a price cut, Nintendo will instead be putting "more energy and time into making better entertainment so that our pr

Mitsubishi's i-MiEV electric vehicle officially headed to the US
It isn't exactly providing a whole lot of details just yet, but Mitsubishi has confirmed at the New York Auto Show today that its i-MiEV electric vehicle will indeed be making its way to the U.S., and sometime "before 2012." Interestingly, according to AutoblogGreen, that delay apparently isn't due to any hang-ups with the vehicle itself (it's hitting roads in Japan this summer), but rather whether battery-maker GS Yuasa can scrounge up enough lithium-ion batteries to keep up with demand. It also looks like the car that eventually hits the U.S. won't be exactly the same as the model bound for Japan and Europe, with the i-MiEV name likely the first thing to go. Of course, the
