Samsung intros frames that double as aux displays
Samsung has recently introduced a pair of digital Touch of Color photo frames that can also act as secondary displays via their USB connections with PCs. The 8-inch SPF-87H has a resolution of 800x480 and is just 0.9-inches thick. Google, Universal team on music video site
Google and Universal Music have announced on Thursday that they will cooperate on the release of Vevo, a new music and video entertainment service that will launch later this year. According to a Thursday CNET interview, the YouTube owner and the largest recording company will share all ad revenue, with YouTube handling the technical operation of the website while Universal provides the content.

Company expands US-based iPhone support
American customer support for the iPhone is expanding, says TV network WRAL. Qualcomm developing FLO TV accessories for iPhone OS 3.0, other smartphones
Qualcomm's fledgling FLO TV service might be on to something this time. President Bill Stone's announced plans to offer mobile broadcast to phones via add-on peripherals, including an iPhone 3.0-compatible antenna /chip accessory that's currently in the works, although without an estimated release window (Business Insider suggests it'll be ready sometime next year). The company's also looking into accessorizing Windows Mobile phones, either with a plug-in or some device that connects over Wi-Fi / Bluetooth. Seeing as the latest comScore statistics say less than one percent of all phone users watch mobile broadcast TV, which at the moment has to come built-in, this could prove to be a boon for the service

Peapod the friendly Neighborhood Electric Vehicle in the flesh
We just got an exclusive first look at the Peapod from Chrysler's Global Eco Mobility unit. Like its cousin the GEM, Peapod is a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, which means it's limited by law to 25 mph and can't go on the highways. Peapod gets about 30 miles on a charge, and adds in all the "car" goodies that GEM was lacking. The vehicle seats four in lightweight Arion-inspired seats, has suicide doors for easy entry, a windowed roof that can be removed for some open-air driving, and even a nice amount of trunk space. Musical designers: UI guru moves from Apple to Microsoft to RIM
For all its flaws, we can understand why someone who can say they had anything to do with designing the iPhone's user experience would be a hot commodity among manufacturers and platform firms, but RIM? mocoNews is reporting that Don Lindsay, who spent the last five years at Microsoft working in the Live Labs and Vista teams, has made the jump to Waterloo to lead up the user experience team. LG Arena KM900 gets reviewed, called an iPhone clone
We didn't think the LG Arena KM900 was any great shakes when we briefly got to play with it at Mobile World Congress, and it sounds like our initial impression was right on the money -- GSM Helpdesk just reviewed the touchscreen handset and more or less called it a weak iPhone clone. For those adventurous iPod touch 2G owners out there, you now have an(other) option to Jailbreak your little precious. The Dev-Team is releasing Redsn0w today as a command line only application but expects to have a full GUI version available shortly.
Anyone out there doing the command line? Let us know how it goes.
To us in the cheap seats, we'd have to wonder exactly what you will do with this jailbreak? Most of our iPhone Jaibroken apps are for iPhone-only tools like video and 3G Tethering. Maybe we need to have another look at Cydia.

Visa rolls out its first commercial NFC payment system
Nokia fulfilled its part of the bargain by rolling out its NFC-enabled 6212 cellphone last year, and it looks like Visa is now finally making the phone a good deal more useful -- in Malaysia, at least. Sony confirms talks with YouTube on full movies
Sony has confirmed this week's earlier rumors that it is engaged in talks with YouTube on posting full-length movies on the free video service site, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. If the deal goes through, it would see the first major US studio to do so on a large scale, and the full-length films would be offered for viewing for free, likely supported by ad sales in the stream.

Samsung's new SPF-87H and SPF-107H photo frames pull double duty as secondary displays
While second monitor status isn't a first for Samsung's picture frames, it's nice to see the functionality be extended to this latest lineup, the "Touch of Color" SPF-87H and SPF-107H. Otherwise the 8-inch and 10-inch frames are pretty basic on features for the most part, including 1GB of internal storage, an internal rechargeable battery and a multicard reader in a 0.9-inch thick form factor. Plex gets Netflix integration (with Silverlight)
Plex, everyone's favorite mediacenter for Macintosh, just got a little more awesome today with a new Netflix application that looks perhaps better that the Roku box that Netflix itself sells. The Netflix App can be downloaded for free from the Plex store but does require the Silverlight plugin (Netflix requires this, not Plex). Make sure you have the latest version of Plex running before installing this one.

Digitimes throws us the daily tease
What would a day be like without a vague Digitimes post stating that new Apple iPhone parts are moving around Asia? Today it is flash chips. Apple just bought 100 million 8Gb (not GB) NAND flash chips which is causing some shortages in the market. Didn't Apple and Samsung have some sort of deal on flash?
Apple has reportedly placed orders for 100 million 8Gb NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics, which is likely to cause a supply shortage, according to sources at downstream suppliers. iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 causing Wifi issues?
According to theappleblog, some* older iPhone and iPod touch users are having some issues with the 2.2.1 upgrade. Apple's forums are lighting up with people whose Wifi has been adversely affected by the update. According to the blog, Apple is reccomending a hardware replacement and that the replacements NOT have firmware 2.2.1. That would imply that there is no easy way to reverse whatever damage 2.2.1 hath wroght.
Anyone out there have first hand experience with this kind of problem? If for some reason, you haven't upgraded to 2.2.1, you might want to hold out for a minute.

BYD's "Mars" MID clamshell has a phone on the back, runs full Windows XP

Wii MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort (feat. Disc Dog) out in July
According to a source at Nintendo (the source being Nintendo's website) the company will include its long-awaited, not-yet-duplicated Wii MotionPlus with the upcoming Wii Sports Resort collection, to be bandied about at E3 this June. The sequel to the Wii Sports promises an even greater sense of submersion for games with titles like Sword Play, Power Cruising, and Disc Dog. Disc Dog! According to Tech Radar, the game -- and the device -- will be out in Japan in June, and will then go on to see the light of day in the rest of the world sometime in July. Pricing and specific release dates have yet to be announced, but you'll know as soon as we do -- promise.

iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 causing Wifi issues?
According to theappleblog, some older iPhone and iPod touch users are having some issues with the 2.2.1 upgrade. Apple's forums are lighting up with people whose Wifi has been adversely affected by the update. According to the blog, Apple is reccomending a hardware replacement and that the replacements NOT have firmware 2.2.1. That would imply that there is no easy way to reverse whatever damage 2.2.1 hath wroght.
Anyone out there have first hand experience with this kind of problem? If for some reason, you haven't upgraded to 2.2.1, you might want to hold out for a minute.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the electricity grid in the United States has been infiltrated by "cyperspies," in an attempt to map the infrastructure, leaving behind software that could pose potential threats in times of crisis. Apple has reportedly placed orders for 100 million 8Gb NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics, which is likely to cause a supply shortage, according to sources at downstream suppliers. Nokia and Sony recently also began building their NAND flash inventories, further tightening supply, the sources added.
As Toshiba, Hynix Semiconductor, Intel and Micron Technology have allocated less chip supplies to the Asia market since early April, downstream memory suppliers are striving to grab more NAND flash chips to meet substantial volumes of short lead-time orders from device makers, the sources indicated.

Plex gets Netflix integration (with Soilverlight)
Plex, everyone's favorite mediacenter for Macintosh, just got a little more awesome today with a new Netflix application that looks perhaps better that the Roku box that Netflix itself sells. The Netflix App can be downloaded for free from the Plex store but does require the Silverlight plugin (Netflix requires this, not Plex). Make sure you have the latest version of Plex running before installing this one.

LG sells 2m Cookie touch phones in 5 months

iPhone-Hoffnungen sollen sinkendes iPod-Interesse ausgleichen
Laut einer aktuellen unter Teenagern durchgeführten Umfrage im Auftrag der Analysten von Piper Jaffray in den USA, geht der Bedarf an iPods zurück. Der Grund dafür ist die hohe Marktsättigung. Demnach besitzen derzeit 92 Prozent der Befragten einen MP3-Player wovon 86-Prozent Musik mit einem iPod hören. Lediglich 19 Prozent der Befragten planen im kommenden Jahr einen neuen Musik-Player zu erwerben. Bemerkenswert ist, dass bei einem Neukauf ausschließlich ein iPod in Frage kommt

Widget-Standardisierung: Apple stellt sich quer
Die Standardisierungsbemühungen des World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) sind ins Stocken geraten, weil Apple lieber auf eigene Patentrechtsansprüche setzt. Konkret geht es um ein Verfahren, Widgets automatisch durch Updates ersetzen zu lassen. Normalerweise stellen Patentrechtsinhaber ihre Ansprüche in solch einem Fall hintenan und verzichten auf Vergütungen, wozu Apple im Fall von Widget-Updates derzeit nicht bereit ist.

Microsoft-Studie: 97 Prozent aller E-Mails sind Spam
Ein Blick in das eigene Postfach verrät: Bei einem Spam-Anteil von 97 Prozent des weltweiten E-Mail-Verkehrs bekommt jeder sein Fett weg. WLAN-Probleme durch iPhone-Überhitzung?
Für zahlreiche Nutzer älterer iPhone-Modelle war das Wartungs-Update zur iPhone-Software 2.2.1 nicht ganz unproblematisch – doch abgesehen von einigen Synchronisationsproblemen sind die Auswirkungen viel weitreichender. Apple makes mystery 100m flash chip order
Apple is causing a supply crunch due to a large, mystery order for NAND flash memory, leaks from "downstream suppliers" say. DigiTimes hears that the company has placed an order for 100 million 8Gb (2GB) chips from Samsung and is reportedly spurring a supply shortage. Combined with orders from Nokia and Sony, the demand may leave little for other customers until "at least" the end of May.

SLAP Widgets add movable, tactile controls to your surface computer
Looking to have the best of both worlds in terms of virtual and physical interfacing, Media Computing Group's developed the Silicon Illuminated Active Peripherals (SLAP) which, as the name suggests, consists of tangible widgets that can be placed anywhere on a surface computer and used for context-specific controls. Examples used are an Optimus-esque keyboard, a slider similar to those found on audio boards, and a knob for video editing. It's a clever approach, sure, but here's hoping future implementations will be able to include a sharper, higher resolution screen. Kuriose SLI-Probleme mit Gainward-Grafikkarten

Nintendo plant Nachfolger von "Wii Sports"
Nintendo will eine neue Version seiner Sportspielesammlung Wii Sports auf den Markt bringen. "Wii Sports Resort" soll im Sommer dieses Jahres in den Handel kommen. Das Update wird im Juni in Japan veröffentlicht, im Juli erscheint es dann in Europa. Wii Sports Resort wird neue Games enthalten, etwa Frisbeespiele mit einem virtuellen Hund und Schwertkämpfe. Wie viel die Sammlung kosten wird, hat Nintendo noch nicht bekannt gegeben.

Safari 4 beta still not playing nice with Hotmail
Since Apple released Safari 4 beta to bleeding-edge users, many have reported not being able to properly access functions of Hotmail, Microsoft's flagship online e-mail service. Reported issues include not being able to log in to accounts, not being able to access messages, and not being able to manipulate messages (deleting, moving, and so on). Finder not becoming active when Desktop is clicked
Users have been experiencing an issue where Finder is not becoming active when clicking on the Desktop. Symptoms arise when an application, such as Mail or Preview is active and the user clicks on the Desktop (an action that normally makes Finder the active menu bar). New iPhone: Apple Creates a Sudden Lack of Flash Memory in a Depressed Market
In order to reduce the volume of their stocks and artificially maintained the price of flash memory, many manufacturers decided to strongly reduce or stop their manufacturing lines till the market demand is back and on the raising curve. In such depressed market, Apple's order for 100 millions GB of flash memory, mostly from Samsung, has created an non-artificial lack for this type of product. In addition, prices went 16% up from the beginning of April. Intel Provides Information about Its Future Processors
During its IDF taking place in Beijing, Intel unveiled some details about the forthcoming mobile platforms as this should be the only one experiencing a sustained growth in the near future.They demoed the future generation of ATOM CPU. Thanks to new power consumption management tools and engraving process, it should reduce energy draining by 90% when in idle status. In 2010, Intel should offer an all-in-one ATOM, having a graphic chipset integrated to the CPU die (most probably a GMA950).Concerning high-end notebooks, corresponding to Apple models of MacBook and MacBook Pro, Intel confirmed that the Nehalem-based mobile CPU and chipset should arrive for the second semester of the year. As for the new Mac Pro, the performance gain should be huge, and both MacBook and iMac should benefit from it.

Corsair's (Almost) SSD Clone of Samsung 256 GB Unit
Corsair already offers a SSD model with 128 GB capacity. In fact, it is a rebranded Samsung unit (simply changed the label on the drive). So, we should not be surprised to see that the new models offering 256 GB of storage space, is also a rebranded Samsung model.
Hot Hardware performed a test on one sample, and noticed a difference with the sample from Samsung The size of the cache memory. Instead of 128 MB on the Samsung model, the Corsair unit sports "only" 64 MB. So, in other words, this drive should be slower in multiple SSD tasks/requests. However, the end user might not be able to really see the difference between both models. Regarding performance figures, the Corsair SSD reaches respectively 200 MB/s and 166 MB/s in reading and writing modes.

It's always nice to get an update on one of our favorite KIRFs as of late. Lenvo's Android-powered OPhone has popped up in a hands-on video, showing off its mock-iPhone OS interface and all the doppelganger apps / features -- weather, stock, calculator and even a near-identical push notification window. Neilson's just released their anxiously awaited "State of the Video Gamer" report, and while it's a real page-turner, there aren't exactly any surprises in store for readers. Neuroscientists in Brooklyn successfully erase memories with drugs
Researchers at SUNY Downstate Medical Center have apparently been tinkering with selectively erasing the memories of rats with a mysterious drug they call ZIP. In the trial, mice who had learned to avoid an electrified area of their cage, once injected with ZIP, appeared to have forgotten about the electrification, and ceased to avoid the area. They have also successfully made the rats forgot about their distaste for a substance that had previously made them sick. Dr. Todd Sacktor, head of the project, believes that the drug may be used in humans one day, and that it may also help enhance memories as well. We don't really have any specific info about the drug itself, or how it works, so until then we'll just have to keep hoping that the lyrics to Use Your Illusion II fade on their own.File

Does Apple's pricing really need to be at $1.29 per song?
A lot of you seem to be upset by the new iTunes music pricing scheme released today. At first, we were kind of ambivalent but when we dug deeper we can see the point.
Why does Apple need to charge $1.29 when Amazon charges $.99 or even $.79 for the same track. Both are high quality DRM free music files. Apple sells way more music and isn't even trying to make a profit (or so it says) so it isn't a scalability or a margin issue.

Elan sues Apple over multitouch rights
We had trouble staying awake during law classes in college, and reading lawsuit articles kind of puts us in that same place. This one seems to be a big deal though, at least in the world of multi-touch, something that Apple is heavily vested in. The NYTimes is reporting that a Tiawanese firn, Elan, is suing Apple over some of its Multi-Touch IP:
“We couldn't find a common viewpoint with Apple, so we decided we had to take action,” he said, adding that the companies had been in licensing talks for about two years.

iPhone 3,1 parts now shipping...
As we begin the slow decent into the June iPhone release, more and more parts news is coming out of Asia. Today, Digitimes is reporting, in some awfully unspecific terms, that:
Taiwan-based handset component suppliers have begun shipping components and parts for the new iPhone that Apple is likely to launch in June, the Chinese-language Commercial Times has quoted sources at component suppliers as indicating.
Shipments of the old and new iPhones could top 2-3 million units, respectively, a quarter after Apple launches the new models, the paper quoted component suppliers as saying.
Yep. Hard to pull anything good from there. But just thought you'd like to know.
