Apple iTV pegged for tomorrow with Netflix app
Apple's expected iTV media hub launch tomorrow is real and should include some form of Netflix support, a last-minute leak contended this evening. Three unidentified sources claimed Netflix's Watch Instantly would be "available" and carry its usual, separate subscription fee. Bloomberg didn't confirm whether it was an app or built-in, though it's much more likely that it would be a variant on the iPad/iPhone app and simply used as a showcase for third-party support.

News Corp reportedly holding back iTunes rentals
With all of the speculation flying around about tomorrow, a few people are poopooing any idea that Apple will mention the iTV at all. The invitation doesn't say anything about it being "show time." Images like the guitar are usually reserved for iLife and the iPod, and it's unlikely that Apple will put a brand new iTV into that somewhat crowded mix. HP Labs teams up with Hynix to manufacture memristors, plans assault on flash memory in 2013

Resort uses augmented reality to pair virtual girls with actual nerds
You've heard of this Love Plus thing, right? This Nintendo DS-based "dating simulator" is apparently a big deal in Japan, giving Otaku the opportunity to chat up (and kiss) girls the only way they know how: on a hand-held game console, with a stylus. T-Mobile HSPA+ hits new areas, to reach 42Mbps in 2011
T-Mobile this afternoon said it had switched on its HSPA+ 3G access in several major cities. The 21Mbps access should be live in Boston and Miami as well as Fresno, Palm Springs and San Diego in California. Roku cuts price of media players in possible anticipation of new Apple TV
Maybe it's coincidence, but probably not. On the eve of a rumored announcement of an updated US $99.00 Apple TV, Roku has cut the price of its media players. The standard definition model has been slashed $20 to $59.99, and the high definition model has been trimmed by $30 to $99.99.

Rumor: New iPhone 4 handset at the end of September
Honestly, I don't even believe this one, but it's our responsibility as an Apple news site to keep you updated on the latest rumors, so here you go: A Mexican tech site is reporting that a Telcel executive says there will be a new version of the iPhone 4's handset released as soon as the end of September.
Marco Quatorze, Telcel's Director of Value Added Services, says that the iPhone 4 will soon go on sale in Mexico with the same hardware as everywhere else, but that as of September 30th (which is purportedly when the free case deal ends), Apple will be releasing brand new hardware for the

Motorola Milestone 2 makes official, albeit unintentional, debut
Sometimes it takes a crafty, steel-nerved individual to leak an unreleased phone's details ahead of time. And then sometimes all it takes is a negligently uploaded video. An official promo for the Milestone 2 has popped up on YouTube before quickly being yanked by Moto. First webOS 2.0 details include OS X-like Stacks
HP's Palm team today provided its first official glimpse at webOS 2.0, the next major revision of its OS. The core interface change revolves around Stacks; borrowing a small cue from Mac OS X Leopard's similarly named feature, it groups app 'cards' based on tasks to simplify switching. Apps that have been opened for related functions will now stay together; a browser used to open a link in e-mail will appear as part of the same Stack as the mail client, for example.

New iPod nano will not displace shuffle, say sources
The sixth-generation Nano will not force the Shuffle out of Apple's iPod product line, people familiar with Apple's plans are said to claim. The size of the Nano is expected to shrink substantially, according to AppleInsider, to the point of being little larger than a 1.7-inch display -- possibly a touchscreen. Dimensions may be comparable, in fact, to the second-generation Shuffle, creating some duplication. Nevertheless, Apple is claimed to be keeping the Shuffle on as an "entry-level" iPod.

T-Mobile G2 official shots break loose, corroborate rumors of wanton awesomeness
The T-Mobile G2 -- which will likely be known as the HTC Desire Z outside the States -- is shaping up to be one of the more anticipated Android launches of 2010, and a handful of smaller-than-we'd-like official press shots that have just leaked over on Cell Phone Signal are doing nothing to make us believe otherwise. The site says it believes silver (pictured) will be the only color offered, and considering that we haven't seen any leaks in any other shades, that seems like a reasonable assumption. NPD: music, not apps, dictating iPhone and iPod use
Despite stereotypes, music still the dominant factor in how iPhone and iPod touch owners use their devices, the NPD Group discovered. While "virtually all" have downloaded a free app at some point, 82 percent have been willing to pay for music; 56 percent have only ever bought songs from the store. When they search, most are looking for music and not apps.

Microsoft hat den Controller der Xbox 360 aufgebretzelt, wobei vor allem das D-pad mit einem cleveren Trick aufwartet: Mit einem kleinen Dreh kann man das Button-Kreuz etwas anheben, um in bestimmten Situationen feinfühliger zu agieren. Der Rest ist Design, so sind die ABXY-Buttos jetzt nicht mehr farbig sondern monochrom und semitransparent. In den USA gibt´s den Controller ab dem 9. Palm fans, get your party hats on. Today the company is announcing the beta release of its SDK for webOS 2.0, which means we're getting dangerously close to a proper 2.0 release for devices. PogoPlug outs iPad printing update, ships Biz, Wi-Fi adapter
Cloud Engines, maker of the PogoPlug NAS adapter, announced on Tuesday that it has posted a promised software update that will let users print from their iPads, iPhones, Android smartphones or other Internet connected devices from anywhere they can get an Internet connection. At the same time, the company said that its PogoPlug Biz and the Wi-Fi Adapter are both shipping. The update should be delivered to all users before week's end.

LG Optimus Pad design slips out early
LG's promised Optimus Pad tablet has leaked out through an LG-run dealer show in Belgium. The design has a tall ratio like the Samsung Galaxy Tab but, from Multimediawereld's photos, takes some of its design cues from older iPhones with a chrome bezel and a rounded shell. Revised iPhone 4 due to ship on September 30th?
Apple is readying an overhauled iPhone 4 to launch at the end of September, a Mexican report suggests. A director at local carrier Telcel claims that the new model will be available as of September 30th, and do away with the reception problems that have only been mitigated by a program of free case handouts. Canon intros two 1080p, 4:2:2 pro camcorders
Canon on Tuesday added a pair of new pro camcorders that should bring high-bitrate video to a more affordable price grade. Together, the XF100 and XF105 record at 1080p30 and use the newer XF Codec of the XF300 series to produce accurate video output. The standard gives them 50-megabit, 4:2:2 sampling MPEG-2 that should both produce better accuracy than HDV and suit itself well to chromakeying or other effects where distinct colors are important. LG's Android-based Optimus Pad gets pictured, looking tablet-like
We've already heard LG talk up its forthcoming Optimus tablet, and it looks like we now have our first look at it. As you can see above in a slide apparently shown during LG's pre-IFA Dealer Days event, the Android-based tablet is now apparently known as the "Optimus Pad," and it's described as boasting "superior performance" and being "thinner and lighter than many competitors' tablets." Not much more than that at the moment, unfortunately, but here's hoping that "more information to come" teaser is a lead-up to a full announcement at IFA this week.

Torch doing nothing to help AT&T BlackBerry sales
Sales of the BlackBerry Torch are having no meaningful impact on RIM's sales at AT&T, Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette claimed in a research note today. Gartner: netbooks to keep losing share as tablets arrive
Netbook market share is likely to keep falling over the next few years due in part to tablets, Gartner found today. It noted that the tiny portables not only lost market share in the first two quarters of 2010 but predicted that the category was on a long slide that would drop it to just 10 percent by the end of 2014. Analyst Raphael Vasquez explained that many were simply buying them as cheap notebooks and no longer have interest now that a full-size notebook doesn't cost much more.

The future of TV shows on iTunes -- and possibly TV itself -- may be riding on whether or not News Corp. decides to back Apple plans to allow 99 cent show rentals, says the LA Times. Armbanduhr "Second Skin" wagt sich aus der Design-Nische
Irgendwie futuristisch anmutende Armbanduhren gibt es dieser Tage wie Sand am Meer und insbesondere LEDs sind dabei schwer angesagt, um mehr oder weniger kryptisch die Zeit darzustellen. Allerdings bleiben diese Armbanduhren durchwegs bei einer sehr klassischen Formgebung, was durchaus nicht sein muss, wie die New Yorker Designerin Svetlana Blum mit ihrem Entwurf "Second Skin" zeigt: Das Teil ist ein Hybrid aus Armreif und Uhr, wobei zwei LED-Reihen minimalistisch die Zeit anzeigen (auf einer Seite die Stunden, auf der anderen Minuten in Fünferschritten). Jetzt heißt es Daumen drücken, dass dieses Konzept in Serie geht.

iAd economics may not pay off for app sales
Apple is quick to advertise their new iAd platform for iOS devices as a way for App Store developers to get more exposure for their apps. In theory, it's a great way to set your app apart in a market saturated with more than 250,000 apps. In practice, the numbers tell a different story.
David Smith, the founder and owner Cross Forward Consulting reported that the results of a recent ad campaign that they ran for their most popular app, Audiobooks Premium, were underwhelming and economically unsustainable.

Microsoft seems to have caught the hardware tinkering bug. Having overhauled its Xbox 360 design, the software giant is now said to be keeping busy in the lab working on the console's controller. Such is the word coming from our buddies over at Joystiq, whose reliable source indicates that Redmond will soon produce a new 360 controller with a redesigned D-pad. AutoCAD: Autodesk kündigt Mac-Version der CAD-Software für Oktober an
Nachdem im Mai bereits erste Bilder von AutoCAD für Mac aufgetaucht sind, macht Hersteller Autodesk es nun offiziell: Ab Ende Oktober wird es die Industrie-Designsoftware geben, außerdem soll auch einen iOS-fähigen Viewer geben.

Asus hat den Chiphersteller Amimon als Zulieferer unter Vertrag genommen. Amimon gehört dem Konsortium für Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI) an und stellt selbst Prozessoren für drahtlose HDTV-Verbindungen nach dem WHDI-Standard her. IMHO: AMD statt ATI - ein guter Anfang

Oxford English Dictionary: nächste Auflage nur noch online?

Die nächste Auflage des Oxford English Dictionary ist zwar noch gut zehn Jahre weit weg, gedruckt wird man sie aber unter Umständen nicht mehr kaufen können. Der Verlag, die Oxford University Press, setzt auf Online. Das ist eine ganz einfache Rechnung, die da aufgemacht wird: Die Webseite (Kosten für die Nutzung: 250 Euro pro Jahr, ohne Mehrwertsteuer) verzeichnet pro Monat rund zwei Millionen Benutzer, von der aktuellen Print-Ausgabe von 1989 wurden bislang lediglich rund 30.000 Kopien verkauft. Die kostet aktuell übrigens 917 Euro. Ob die Online-Variante tatsächlich die einzige sein wird in der Zukunft, ist noch nicht entschieden, Sinn scheint da

ASUS Eee PC 1215N review
About nine months ago ASUS released its 12.1-inch Eee PC 1201N to much fanfare. It was the first "netbook" to pack NVIDIA's Ion platform and a desktop-class Atom processor. Translation: it absolutely wrecked regular netbooks (and even other Ion netbooks) on the graphics and performance battlefield. Indeed, the 1201N blurred the lines between netbook and regular laptop, but we ultimately knocked it fairly hard for not lasting longer than 2.5 hours on a charge -- it was dubbed a "netbook" of course.

Im Laufe der Zeit sammelt sich auf der Festplatte eines jeden Macs eine Unmenge von Dateien, Programmen und sonstigen Daten an. Ungern möchte man diese auf dem neuen Rechner missen und eigentlich seinen neuen Desktop so vorfinden, wie man es vom bisherigen Rechner gewohnt war. Die bequemste Art und Weise den Datenumzug zu gestalten stellt sicherlich die Verwendung des Migrationsassistenten dar, den Apple in seinen letzten Mac-OS-X-Versionen integriert. Dieser kann entweder direkt während der Systeminstallation des neuen Rechners genutzt werden, oder aber man spart sich diese Arbeit für einen späteren Zeitpunkt auf, beispielsweise wenn der ältere Rechner nicht unmittelbar in Reichweite ist. Road to Special Event: Neue iPods?
Morgen Abend findet im Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco ein weiterer Apple Special Event statt. Entsprechende Veranstaltungen im September haben unterdessen Tradition. In den letzten fünf Jahren nutzte Apple jeweils entsprechende Presse-Events zur Auffrischung seiner iPod-Palette. Toshiba hat in einer Pressemitteilung bekannt gegeben, dass man mit der Herstellung von NAND-Flash-Chips in 24 Nanometer Strukturbreite begonnen hat. Fraunhofer Institut: Videotelefonie in HD soll und muss besser werden, wir sind dran

In einer lobenswerten Initiative hängt sich das Fraunhofer Institut in Sachen Videotelefonie in HD richtig rein. Soll alles besser werden, muss alles besser sein. Erreicht werden sollen störungsfreie Unterhaltungen mit einem Stück Hardware, das die Entschlüsselung des Audio- und Video-Signals übernehmen soll. SkypeHD hat da ähnliche Anforderungen. Die Techniker vom Fraunhofer wollen mit der neuen Karte aber auch Netzwerk-Störungen kompensieren und die oft störenden Echos beseitigen. Verzögerungen sollen unter 100ms gedrückt werden. Vielleicht sehen wir auf der IFA ja schon konkrete Ergebnisse.

Telekom: Leichte Kritik an Apple wegen Lieferengpässen
Die Deutsche Telekom äußert bezüglich der Lieferschwierigkeiten beim iPhone 4 leichte Kritik an Apple. Motorola says leaked Droid X Android 2.2 build won't be updated to the official release
Can't say this is a surprise, but Motorola posted a note on its support forums today warning users Droid X users against upgrading to that leaked Android 2.2 build or any of those custom ROMS that're out there -- they'll be cut off from the official upgrade when it hits in early September and potentially "stuck on the leaked version." Samsung Galaxy Tab surfaces in Verizon's inventory system
Verizon's plans for a truer iPad rival were confirmed Monday night after a leak showed the Samsung Galaxy Tab in its inventory system. Few details were confirmed, but the presence suggested not only that an EVDO-capable 3G model is due at the carrier but that Verizon was already making early preparations for a launch. If true to the reference version, BGR's spotting should bring a seven-inch Android 2.2 device with a 1GHz processor and both front as well as back cameras.

I like this idea a lot -- developer Daniel Hellerman is working on an app for the App Store that will interface with a Windows client to control Blizzard's StarCraft 2 real-time strategy game. The RTS Gameboard for StarCraft 2 is an app, downloadable starting in September on the App Store (assuming it's approved by Apple), that will purportedly let you control your units and buildings through the iPad and iPhone's touchscreen interface. The app promises "mini-map control, detailed unit statistics, and easy touch access to the games most important hotkeys and macros."

RESCUECOM reliability ratings see Apple jump from 3rd to 2nd
Apple has moved up to the second position in Rescuecom's latest computer reliability ranking. The company scored a lower percentage of calls and almost doubled its reliability score to take second place, with a result that would have been good enough for first place in the previous quarter. Asus had a huge, 400 percent jump in score to take first in the second quarter. Apple and Asus bumped IBM/Lenovo to third despite the company's improved numbers, while Toshiba and HP/Compaq maintained fourth and fifth, respectively, despite improved scores.

Apple looking to hire iBookstore marketing manager
Apple has posted a new job listing looking for a marketing manager specifically for the iBookstore. The listing seeks an experienced business marketer "to drive awareness and sales of iBooks through co-marketing programs with publishers and authors, strategic partnerships, and via online and direct marketing tactics." It seems like a lot of the position will be self-driven, as whoever's chosen will be asked to come up with some interesting schemes to push iBook sales, both with publishers, and even across the other divisions of iTunes (buy an iBook, get an iTunes download free?). Analyst expects Apple to move further away from NVIDIA
Standard & Poor's analyst Clyde Montevirgen cast doubt on NVIDIA's future today in an investment note that suggested it would lose business from Apple. He urged investors to sell as an "anticipated market share loss" was sure to come while Apple changed from NVIDIA to AMD for graphics.
