Mac mini supply said to be dwindling, world wonders 'why?'
Need a bit more evidence that Apple has some new Mac minis on the way? Then look no further than Apple Insider, which says that it has "verified four times over" that current Mac mini supplies are running dry, and that new models are all but a certainty. Adding further weight to the story is the fact that these aren't simply reports of delays here and there, but reports from large buyers like educational institutions who say that they've either been advised not to place bulk orders for Mac minis or had their orders pushed back -- in one case to an exact date of June 14th. Briefly: TIME Mobile app update, HP 6500 driver update
An updated version of the TIME Mobile application for the iPhone and iPod touch has been released in the App Store. The free app allows users to access all of the latest news in a format designed for reading on a mobile device. e-on ships Vue 8.5 PLE, announces Carbon Scatter beta
Developer e-on has released Personal Learning Editions of Vue 8.5 xStream and Infinite, its main environmental modeling suites. Infinite operates independently, while xStream connects to Maya, Lightwave, Cinema4D, Softimage or 3DS Max. The PLE editions are free, but are for non-commercial use only, and thus have network rendering disabled and watermarked output. Likewise, PLE users cannot exchange files with other people or editions of Vue.

AT&T apologizes to customer warned off emailing the CEO: 'This is not the way we want to treat customers'
AT&T's Executive Response Team certainly caused a little controversy yesterday after it warned reader Giorgio Galante that sending another email to AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson would result in a cease and desist letter, but apparently it was all just a mistake -- Giorgio tells us that he's received a sincere apology from an AT&T senior VP, who took responsibility for the mixup. Apparently the cease and desist warning came about due to bad reading of AT&T internal policy -- Giorgio was told the rep who made the call is "not having the best of days today" -- and AT&T tells us it's reviewing its procedures to make sure it doesn't happen again. Netvibes opens alpha RSS site for iPad
Netvibes has debuted an iPad web app to complement its desktop RSS service. Currently in alpha, the app mainly lets users aggregate a collection of RSS feeds, as with most RSS readers. A distinguishing trait though is the ability to load thousands of widgets, covering information such as stocks and weather, or tasks like updating Facebook and Twitter.

Adobe AIR getting native Android app compilation
Sound familiar? That's right: Adobe's looking to move some of the same technologies it developed for Flash-to-iPhone app compilation over to Android, where we imagine the company will be meeting a much more receptive audience. AIR -- part of the Flash portfolio of products -- now has a native Android app feature in beta, letting you pump out .apk files from code written in ActionScript 3. FontAgent Pro adds auto-activation plug-ins for CS5

HTC chief denies Android fragmentation his problem
HTC's CEO Peter Chou defended Android and some of his company's practices in his turn on stage at the D8 conference. The smartphone maker denied that his firm's Sense UI was contributing to Android's fragmentation by delaying when phones could get Android OS upgrades. He instead put a minimal amount of the blame on the OS itself and argued that Sense UI was capable of the apps if the OS didn't conflict.

Mercedes-Benz to use iPad as a sales tool
Filed under: iPadMercedes-Benz is using the iPad to hawk cars. Unlike Hyundai, who gave iPads to customers, Benz is equipping their sales force.
Autoblog notes that the iPad will serve several functions on the sales floor. iPad used to assist surgery in Flash-free Japanese OR
At least one surgeon in Japan is using an iPad in the operating theater (a term we learned from M*A*S*H). It's unclear to us whether it's attached to an endoscope, he's looking at reference photos, or even if the device is serving any use at all other than attracting TV coverage, but it sure looks like the real thing -- he's pinching to zoom through latex gloves and everything! Mac mini drought hints at model updates
The Mac mini appears to be on the verge of receiving a much-needed update, evidence suggests. A number of suppliers are indicating shipping delays or a complete absence of stock, a common occurrence in the weeks before Apple releases new hardware. One buyer for a higher educational institution says that in placing a bulk order for Minis two weeks ago, he specified to an Apple salesman that the computers would be needed by June 1st. United Airlines offers up 'Zune inflight audio,' no actual Zunes
Microsoft's already shown with the Xbox 360 and Kin that it's looking to take its Zune platform beyond Zune-branded hardware, but we can't say we expected it to go quite this far -- Microsoft has now teamed up with United Airlines to offer "Zune inflight audio" to passengers. That apparently won't involve any new hardware in the planes -- Microsoft or otherwise -- but it will give passengers 21 new playlists "programmed by Zune" to choose from, including options like Classic Rock, Contemporary Pop, Opera and Piano Jazz. Sony: e-books more popular than print in five years
E-books will be the dominant form of reading within five years, Sony's digital reading head Steve Haber predicted late Wednesday. He had estimated three years ago that it would take 10 years for e-readers to overtake print but now believes that was pessimistic and would take half as much time. Digital text has already passed a point of mainstream acceptance and can't help but get more important than paper, he said.

Amtrak to make free Wi-Fi standard on Acela Express trains
After a trial run that proved to be a great success, Amtrak has said it will make free Wi-Fi access standard on its Acela Express trains. After a three month test period, the Washington, DC to Boston run will be the first route to get the service, with more being added in the future. During the trial, 39 percent of riders, or about 115,000, signed on.

Google mobile search now includes iPhone apps
Filed under: iPhoneGoogle announced a new feature this week that lists apps in mobile search results. When searching for an app by name from your iPhone (it works with Android too, naturally), the top result is a link to the app's home in the App Store. In addition to the link, you get information like rating, publisher and price.

Sony predicts digital content will overtake print 'within five years'
We can't say if there's an actual rule or not, but we're pretty sure that anyone in the e-reader business has to, at one point, make a prediction about when e-books will overtake actual books, and it looks like Sony has now come through with a big one of its own. That comes courtesy of Sony's Steve Haber, the man responsible for the company's digital reading business division, who says that: "within five years there will be more digital content sold than physical content." OnLive demos remote gaming, movies on iPad
OnLive at the D8 conference demoed its streaming game service running on the iPad. The remote play interface works "great" on an iPad and was shown running the action RPG Borderlands where many of the PCs at the conference wouldn't have the power to run it properly. Videos also work properly, and a Harry Potter movie clip played without lag between the movie and its audio.

Samsung NX5 brings pricing down on mirrorless cameras
Samsung has quietly brought out a lower-cost alternative to the NX10. The NX5 has the same 14.6-megapixel sensor, interchangeable lenses and controls of its older counterpart but costs less through its displays. A regular LCD replaces the AMOLED from the NX10, and the electronic viewfinder is lower resolution.

All of my friends who have Macs say you don't need any. Even the folks at the Apple store said I don't need it. It's always seemed a bit ridiculous to us that a console that promised "full HD features from the start" was never capable of playing games or movies in high definition right out of the box, but this special Father's Day PS3 bundle fixes that with an HDMI cable packed in. Elementary school, New York City mayor adopt iPads
Apple's iPad marketing efforts are being helped through two different public exposures, reports note. In Tampa Bay, Florida, Watergrass Elementary School has given away 16GB Wi-Fi iPads to 13 fifth-graders, a gift for the students as they graduate to the sixth grade. The tablets are also meant to help with future homework and research. An Apple saleswoman who has worked with Watergrass, Andrea Barr, says a photo from the giveaway may be used in an upcoming ad.

ASUS debuts WirelessHD-equipped G73JW and G53 laptops, we go eyes-on
We already took a closer look at ASUS' minty fresh ROG G53 gaming laptop earlier in the week, but it was the outfit's 17-inch version (the G73JW, predictably) used to showcase a new partnership with SiBEAM. The aforesaid rigs are the world's first laptops to integrate SiBEAM's 60GHz WirelessHD technology, essentially doing exactly what Intel's WiDi does. AT&T CEO office threatens cease-and-desist over complaints
Two complaint e-mails sent to the CEO of AT&T, Randall Stephenson, were met with the threat of a cease-and-desist letter, says an upset customer. Giorgio Galante explains that he initially sent an e-mail asking for a change in his iPhone upgrade eligibility, on the assumption that service representatives can't adjust it, and that his $110 monthly phone bill might wield some influence. WDR beginnt große Löschaktion

Foxconn workers to receive 30 percent raise

Following reports of employee suicides (10 since January of this year), Reuters reports today that production line workers will be receiving a 30% increase in pay, effective immediately. Apples Developer Bereich ist offline
Am heutigen Nachmittag wurde nach und nach für einige Entwickler Apples Developer Seiten auf die Seite mit dem gelben Post-it geschaltet. Apfeltalk-Nutzer BlackSoul machte uns um 15:30 darauf aufmerksam, jedoch konnte dies von anderen Entwicklern vorerst nicht bestätigen, weitere Abschaltungen des Developerbereichs wurden gegen 18 Uhr gemeldet.
Da am Montag Apples Entwicklerkonferenz WWDC startet könnte diese schon online vorbereitet werden. Auch eine letzte und fünfte Beta Version des iPhone OS 4 ist möglich, die vorherigen Betas kamen im 14 Tage Rhythmus heraus, die letzte am 18.05. Bis wir neues wissen heißt es abwarten

AMD in no rush to get into tablets
AMD senior VP Rick Bergman today said at Computex that his company wouldn't get into tablets in the near future. As the market is so far limited to one company, Apple, no pressure exists for AMD to get into an ecosystem that doesn't really exist. Court says search of Gizmodo editor's computers underway
A San Mateo court has ordered the go-ahead for a search of Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's computers, says the county's chief deputy district attorney, Stephen Wagstaffe. Study: AT&T still has fastest 3G, but eclipsed by 4G
AT&T claimed the title of the fastest 3G network in the US today through a new study that also showed its absolute control coming to an end. The iPhone carrier had both the highest average download speed, at 1.79Mbps, as well as the highest maximum speed (2.75Mbps). The HSPA network had the best performance in six of the 18 different cities covered by PCMag, including the surprise of San Francisco.

Google this week modified its mobile search engine to now include search results of apps from the Android Market and the iPhone App Store. If only there were more tablets in the world, you know? Samsung has heard the call, and truth be told they might have a nice crack at creating something desirable. Samsung enters tablets, teases Galaxy Tab
Samsung South Africa gave away the company's tablet plans today by posting a teaser of its first device. The Galaxy Tab would run the same customzied version of Android 2.1 as the Galaxy S but on a much larger display. The example on show has a 7-inch LCD and apepars to be running the same resolution as its 4-inch AMOLED cousin, although that may be a function of the pre-release nature and lack of optimizations.

Inventec's Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop
It may sound like a mid-boss in some forgotten and poorly translated NES game, but Dr. Eye (aka the N18C) is actually a sort of keyboard-endowed MID from Inventec. This chubby clamshell sports a QWERTY keyboard, a 4.8-inch VGA touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, and a front-facing webcam. Power is said to come from a "Marvell 624," which we're guessing is a 624MHz PXA310 and, while it's currently running 1.6, word is that it'll be dipped in 2.1's creamy filling in the near future. Apple culling widget apps from App Store?
Apple is actively removing apps with widgets from the App Store, claims developer Russell Ivanovic. The coder says he was recently called by an Apple representative and told his own title, MyFrame, was being pulled because the company is looking to remove any app that presents widgets. Before it disappeared, My Frame was capable of displaying an extra layer of data on top of photos, in a manner similar to the Mac Dashboard or Microsoft's Gadgets layer in Windows.

Say what you will about Nokia's software, there's no faulting the E70-series of QWERTY candybars, which marry delectable keyboards with thin, classy, and surprisingly rugged design -- and of course top it off with an almost-just-too-small screen. MS: new Live Essentials make Windows better than Mac
Microsoft today tried to claim a rare edge in superiority for media apps with a preview of an upgraded Windows Live Essentials pack. The bundle focuses heavily on Photo Gallery and claims some advantages not seen in iPhoto: users can make composite images that take the best parts of similar images, and Facebook integration is tight with both uploads and the ability to import tags from photos already uploaded to the social network. Kazaa creators open legal music service for iPhone
The former founders of Kazaa today launched Rdio (link ready soon), their first fully legal music service. Like some of its competitors, it promises per-track streaming both on the web and on mobile devices like the BlackBerry and iPhone for a fee. Bereits geklärt ist hingegen, dass er für seinen Konzern – zeitlich passend zur WWDC und einer (möglichen) Ankündigung zur nächsten iPhone-(Videochat-)Generation – die Mobilfunktarife ändert.
Dabei entfällt die unbegrenzte iPad-Datenflat für $29.99 US-Dollar und wird durch einen $25 US-Dollar 2GB-DataPro-Tarif ersetzt. Überschreitet der Nutzer diese Volumengrenze, fallen pro verbrauchtem Gigabyte nochmals $10 US-Dollar an. Aus dem $14.99 US-Dollar-Tarif für 250MB wird ein DataPlus-Tarif für $15 US-Dollar, der einen Datenverbrauch von 200 MB deckt. DOJ reportedly expands Apple probe
Filed under: AppleThe New York Post is reporting this week that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) is expanding its investigation of Apple in regards to iTunes and changes to the beta iPhone OS 4 SDK.
As for iTunes, Apple is accused of allegedly threatening to withhold their typical promotional activities from labels who continued to offer exclusives to Amazon via their Daily Deals campaign.
Additionally, the DOJ and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are negotiating which of them will launch an inquiry into a clause

HP: Wir haben Palm nicht gekauft, um in den Smartphone-Markt einzusteigen
Nachdem bekannt wurde, dass HP sich zur Übernahme von Palm entschlossen hatte, konnte man fast davon ausgehen, auch HP steige in Zukunft ins Smartphone-Geschäft ein. Vor (fast) genau 12 Monaten warfen wir einen detaillierten Blick auf die iPhone-Fingerfarbenmalerei Color Splash (1.59 €; App Store-Link). Auf dem größeren iPad-Bildschirm macht das Einfärber der eigenen Lichtbilder noch einmal mehr Freude.
Eure Schnappschüsse lassen sich aus der Bibliothek in das Programm laden und werden dann mit einem Grauschleier überzogen. Mit euren Finger lässt sich die ursprüngliche Farbe zurückbringen, womit sich Teile der Fotografie hervorheben lassen. Nicht jedes Foto eignet sich für eine solche ‘Aufwertung’; für viele Bilder lässt sich jedoch genau durch diesen Effekt eine Aufnahme erst perfektionieren.

iPod/iPhone-Dock zum Wandeinbau in Schalterdosen
Der deutsche Hersteller von Schalter- und Elektrosystemen JUNG hat sein Angebot um ein Musik-Center mit Dockingstation für iPods und das iPhone erweitert.
Modular aufgebaut, lässt sich das Dock entweder alleine oder in Kombination mit bis zu zwei Lautsprechermodulen mit integrierten Bassreflexröhren in gewöhnliche Unterputzdosen einsetzen. Dabei können die Lautsprecher wahlweise einzeln oder im Paar mit der Dockingstation zusammen in Mehrfachrahmen verbaut, oder frei im Raum verteilt werden - hierfür ist allerdings ein zusätzliches Übertragungsmodul erforderlich.
Ein integrierer Stereoverstärker liefert 2 x 1,2 Watt Ausgangsleistung. Im Lieferumfang ist zudem eine kleine IR-Fernbedienung für Lautstärkeregelung, Play/Pause und Vor/Zurück enthalten.
Die rund 280 Euro teure Dockingstation verfügt über Line-Ein- und Ausgänge und kann zudem als Ladestation für iPods und iPhones genutzt werden.

Seit einigen Wochen macht sich ein neuer kleiner Bezahldienst im Internet breit. Flattr bietet die Möglichkeit einfach und schnell Beiträge im Internet, die man gut findet zu belohnen. Dabei geht flattr einen anderen Weg als Spenden über Paypal oder ähnliches. Bei flattr legt man im Vorfeld fest, was der eigne Beitrag im Monat zum Internet sein soll. Da in letzter Zeit immer mehr mögliche Ersatzteile des kommenden iPhones an die Öffentlichkeit gelangen, war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis auch die verschiedenen Cover komplett gezeigt werden. Nachdem uns eine weiße Front schon länger bekannt ist, tauchte nun auch die Rückseite auf. Und es scheint klar: Das nächste iPhone könnte erstmals komplett in weißer Farbe erhältlich sein. Da auf den Teilen aber noch Platzhalter für mögliche Modellnummern zu sehen sind, wäre es möglich, dass es sich hierbei auch um einen (guten) Fake handelt. Aber urteilt selbst.

AdMob veröffentlicht iPad SDK
AdMob, das von Google gekaufte Unternehmen für die Verbreitung von Werbeinhalten auf mobilen Geräten, veröffentlichte ein SDK, dass die Erstellung von Werbung für iPhone OS Geräte erleichtert. In der neuen Version, die AdMob im firmeneigenen Blog erläutert, ist es möglich angepasste Werbung für das iPad zu erstellen. My, my -- what have we here? No, seriously, what is this hodgepodge of (rival) companies, and why have they suddenly decided to high five each other here at Computex? Frankly, we're still trying to piece it all together, but after sitting through a Linaro launch event in Taipei, we're beginning to get a better handle on the relationship that Samsung, ARM, IBM, Freescale, Samsung, ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments and the Linux Foundation have just made official. The outfits mentioned above are coming together to form the UK-based Linaro (a not-for-profit entity), which currently has 25 engineers but will see that figure shoot up to nearly a hundred around the world in the coming days.

OCZ reveals consumer-level RevoDrive PCIe SSD, blazing fast HSDL data interface
OCZ has a penchant for doling out new kit at trade shows, and this year's Computex is no different. The star of the new-release show was the RevoDrive, a PCIe card with between 128GB and 480GB of SSD onboard. My wife's iPhone 2G is broken. The power switch always thinks it is being pushed down, which means that the iPhone turns itself off fairly regularly. As you might expect, it's fairly annoying.

Verizon won't have Apple devices in "immediate future"
Verizon spokesman John Johnson today downplayed the near-term prospects of Apple hardware on Verizon [video below]. Flurry agrees to stop device data collection

Steve Jobs said a lot of interesting things on stage at the D8 conference last night (I'm surprised I haven't seen a t-shirt with "My sex life is pretty good" on it yet), but he did put one issue to rest.

HP CEO: "We didn't buy Palm to be in the smartphone business"

S3 Graphics seeks ITC trade ban on iPad, iPhone
S3 Graphics late last week filed a complaint (PDF) against Apple with the International Trade Commission for allegedly violating four patents relating to encoding and decoding images. It accuses Apple of copying the technology with the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Certain MacBooks and Apple software, such as SDKs, also supposedly imitate S3's work.

Slacker iPhone app adds caching for offline listening

BlackBerry Curve 9300 fixing to replace the 8500 series?
It death of the BlackBerry Curve 8900 on T-Mobile (you can still get it on AT&T, by the way) bummed us out for the simple reason that it was perhaps the best-looking BlackBerry every made. Neue Bilder zeigen weiße Rückseite der (vermeintlich) nächsten iPhone-Generation
So langsam dürften wir alle Ersatzteile für die vermeintliche vierte iPhone-Generation zusammen haben. Die US-Webseite Mac Rumors berichtet von einer bei einem Reparaturbetrieb aufgetauchten weißen Gehäuserückseite. Somit scheint beinahe sicher, das auch die nächste iPhone-Generation sowohl mit schwarzem wie auch mit weißem Gehäuse in den Handel kommen wird.

Red Giant Software has launched a Final Cut Pro plug-in, Magic Bullet Grinder, designed to convert DSLR video into formats compatible with editing software. Users can convert H264-encoded video into ProRes, Standard, ProRes Proxy, and PhotoJPEG formats. AdMob releases iPad SDK
The Google-owned AdMob advertising network wants to make it easier for marketers to leverage the power of iPad (and also stay ahead of Apple's impending iAds frameworks in the process). The company announced today that its iPad App SDK is available for developers; this unified environment works with all iPhone OS devices, so devs can include ad code in apps for iPhone and iPod touch as well.
The tool allows for the creation of text and image ads, but in the near future AdMob expects to provide HTML5 video support -- there's a snazzy preview over on the company blog right now
