Mac OS X 10.6.4 ist da
Weniger Fehler, mehr Sicherheit: Apple hat soeben ein Update für Snow Leopard freigegeben. Mac OS X 10.6.4 steht über die Software-Aktualisierung des Finders zur Verfügung. Das Update „enthält Safari 5 sowie allgemeine Fehlerbehebungen für das Betriebssystem zur Optimierung der Stabilität, Kompatibilität und Sicherheit Ihres Macs“. Die Aktualisierung bringt also abgesehen von Safari 5 keine neuen Features, sondern in erster Linie Bugfixes. Laut Apple wurden folgende Fehler behoben:

Next-gen Droid event scheduled for day before iPhone 4
Motorola, Verizon, Google and Adobe have sent an invite to an event that will showcase the next generation of Droid devices. The invite-only event is scheduled for June 23, though the exact location in New York has been left out from the invite posted online. Whether this will involve the official unveiling of the Droid 2, Droid X or both remains to be seen.

OnLive to launch June 17 with 23 games
At E3 on Tuesday, OnLive announced that its streaming online gaming service will launch on June 17. The first year of access will be free thanks to a partnership with AT&T, with a monthly fee of $5 applicable after that. It will allow access to 23 games at launch.

Apple's corporate attitude now out of place, says analyst
Apple may need to adjust its behavior if it wants to avoid legal action by the US government, argues Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes. The FTC is reportedly considering whether Apple should be charged with antitrust violations, mainly for banning cross-compilers such as those based on Flash. The corporation could also be accused of unfairly blocking Google and AdMob from selling iOS ads, and the Department of Justice is reportedly looking into abuses in the music industry.

I have whittled MobileMe down to two useful functions: Find My iPhone and Remote Wipe. And yes, I use one of those functions quite often, say, when my husband is off on some 80 mile jaunt on his bicycle. I have, thankfully, yet to require the services of the other one. But the rest of it: email, syncing, and online storage? Gone the way of the dodo.
Initially, I moved mostly over to Gmail to take advantage of its more robust email aliasing. I have several email addresses on personal domains, and Gmail gave me the best mix of domain use, plus sophisticated filtering and spam identification. MobileMe just doesn't play nicely with personal domai

Apple, ATI, NVIDIA helping to improve Valve game speed
Apple, ATI and NVIDIA are working with Valve on improving the performance of Source-engine games, says Valve's Robert Barris. Source is used in all of Valve's current titles, such as Portal and Team Fortress 2. These have so far suffered in speed, however, next to the original versions developed for Windows. Drivers are largely to blame, according to Barris.

Razer outs Starcraft II-themed peripherals
Computer gaming peripherals maker Razer on Tuesday partnered with game maker Blizzard Entertainment on three new StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty-branded gaming peripherals. This includes the Spectre mouse, Marauder keyboard and the Banshee headset. The three share Razer's APM (Actions-Per-Minute) lighting system, have StarCraft styling cues and are portable.

Google Earth comes to the iPad

Canada to get first unlocked iPhones
When the iPhone 4 and 8GB iPhone 3GS launch in the country in July, Canada will finally get its first unlocked iPhones, an Apple FAQ confirms. Although people can already buy iPhones there from multiple carriers, including Bell, Rogers, Telus and Virgin Mobile, models have so far been limited to ones locked to their original vendors. Apple arbeitet an der "nächsten Generation" von Medienbearbeitung
Kurz vor der WWDC-Keynote tauchte in spannendes Gerücht auf. Angeblich sollte Apple das "Magic Trackpad" vorstellen, ein externes Trackpad, über das der Computer mit Hilfe von Multitouch-Gesten gesteuert wird. Moto Droid X may be unveiled next week, ship July 19
Verizon has locked down a ship date for the Motorola Droid X that could pit it against the iPhone 4, multiple sources claimed today. Retail staff for the carrier have reportedly been told to prepare for an early opening on July 19 to launch at least one of Motorola's new, high-profile Android phones. The launch is important enough that Verizon wants all staff on hand, and custom store graphics and shirts will have to be in place on launch day.

Motorola Droid X purportedly hitting Verizon on July 19th
Take this with a mouthful of NaCl, but Droid-Life has it on authority that Motorola's Droid X is gearing up to make the Droid Incredible seem a bit less Incredible next month. Apple, AT&T struggle to cope with pre-order demand

Nintendo 3DS in the flesh!
That Nintendo announced the 3DS was not a surprise -- that they had a couple-dozen of these things to try out. We elbowed our way to the front of the line to try it out, and the effect is actually not bad. It's perhaps not great, but it's certainly not bad definitely giving a firm illusion of depth without resorting to glasses -- or eye crossing. Vor neun Stunden hieß es "Im Moment scheint es wegen des großen Interesses am iPhone 4 noch Probleme mit der Seite zu geben.

Neuer Mac Mini deutlich teurer als Vorgängermodell
Apple hat einen grundlegend überarbeiteten Mac Mini vorgestellt. Im Vergleich zum Vorgängermodell schrumpft die Bauhöhe von etwas über 5 auf 3,6 Zentimeter. Dafür haben Breite und Tiefe von 16,5 auf 19,7 Zentimeter zugelegt. Somit sieht der Rechner auf den ersten Blick zwar kleiner aus, das Volumen bleibt mit 1385 cm3 aber nahezu auf dem Niveau des älteren Modells (1397 cm3). Allerdings hat Apple beim neuen Mac Mini das Netzteil in das Gehäuse integriert. Durch den Wegfall der externen Stromversorgung kommt es somit zu einem Volumenersparnis der Gesamtlösung von circa 20 Prozent. Der Preis für das Standardmodell beträgt 809 Euro. Die Server-Variante kostet 1149 Euro.

For a data junkie, the Internet is irresistible. It offers innumerable incoming streams, and with tools like Web browsers, RSS, Twitter and so on, I can soak them all up. The by-product, of course, is distraction. I flip from one to the other like a manic hummingbird, never satisfied. What else is going on, and how quickly can I find out about it?
It's amazing how eagerly we invite distraction upon ourselves. Consider how frequently we do two (or more) things at once. While an app launches, I check Twitter. As a Web page loads, I Command-Tab over to Mail. All the while, iTunes plays music, and I'm thinking about what else must be done today.

RIM kündigt BlackBerry Pearl 3G für Deutschland an
Research in Motion hat heute das BlackBerry Pearl 3G für Deutschland angekündigt. Das Smartphone im Handy-Format wird nicht über eine QWERTZ- oder SureType-Tastatur bedient, sondern mit einer traditionellen Handy-Tastatur mit 14 Tasten. Während der Texteingabe erkennt und vervollständigt die integrierte SureType-Technologie die Wörter. News: Virgin Mobile to offer iPhone 4 in Canada
Virgin Mobile has confirmed via its website that it will offer the iPhone 4 in Canada, joining Rogers/Fido, Bell, and Telus as official carriers for the handset. As with the other carriers, Virgin Mobile has yet to announce any pricing or plan details. Konsortium mit IBM und Samsung entwickelt neue ARM-Plattform
Eine Gruppe von Halbleiterherstellern rund um ARM, IBM und Samsung hat eine anpassbare Plattform für 32- und 28-Nanometer-Chips vorgestellt. Die beiden weiteren Mitglieder sind Chartered Semiconductor (gehört zu Globalfoundries) und Synopsys. Brief leak shows iPhone 4 plans at Vodafone UK
Carrier Vodafone UK has accidentally leaked subscription plans for the iPhone 4, which is set to go on sale in the region on June 24th. Most notable in the information is the existence of universal 1GB cellular data cap; while low, the cap is less restrictive than options at O2, which require people to pay at least £60 per month if they want 1GB by default. At Vodafone a 1GB cap also exists on traffic at BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots.

HP Pavilion dm4 review
Sit back and sprinkle a few new processors into its Pavilion line up? Nope, that's exactly what HP didn't do this year when it came to refreshing its successful multimedia laptop brand. Instead, it has remade the entire series by subbing plastic for metal, adding a chiclet keyboard and trimming down the measurements. The 14-inch Pavilion dm4 is one of the more portable of the bunch, and though it's only slightly thicker than an inch, our $905 review unit packed a Core i5 processor, 320GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM. iPad 3G: ICCID-Daten unnötigerweise von AT&T gesammelt?

Spezifikation von OpenCL 1.1 veröffentlicht
Die Khronos Group hat die Spezifikation von OpenCL nach rund eineinhalb Jahren auf Version 1.1 aktualisiert. Das Update liefert neue Befehle, Unterstützung für zusätzliche Datentypen wie Vektoren mit drei Komponenten und weitere Bildformate sowie erhöhte Interoperabilität mit dem Grafikstandard OpenGL. Computer market to grow nearly 20% as netbooks stall
Computer sales will rebound so quickly this year that they should reach an all-time high, researchers at IDC estimated today. The year-over-year growth in sales should reach 19.8 percent, outweighing the slump in 2009, and could see 354.8 million computers ship worldwide. Most of these would be notebooks, which could grow 28.6 percent while desktops should grow by just 8.2 percent.

Apple delays some iPhone 4 accessories
In tandem with the beginning of iPhone 4 pre-orders, Apple has also begun taking pre-orders on first-party accessories for the device. Some important gear will not be ready for the June 24th launch event however; a new dock, priced at $29, is only expected to ship on July 2nd. The dock is listed as exclusively compatible with the iPhone 4.

NYFI hopes to give free Wi-Fi to NYC trains
A private telecommunications company has proposed adding Wi-Fi service to two New York City area train lines. Mobilitie, which operates the free Wi-Fi service NYFI, submitted the proposal to build a wireless network for the Metro North and Long Island Rail Road lines. The service would be free to riders. The network and service would be built and supported by revenue from ads.

Oh Samsung, always setting world records. At an intimate (though slightly awkward) press conference yesterday, Samsung pulled the wraps off its newest SE-S084 external DVD as well as its 12x SH-B123 Blu-ray drives. The former is pretty much your standard external 24x CD-ROM / 8x DVD-ROM peripheral, except it's only 17mm thick. Samsung is claiming it's the world's thinnest, but in all honesty, we weren't all that blown away by its slimness. We have an HP drive sitting right here that looks to have very comparable dimensions, but at .5 pounds it was incredibly light in hand -- we actually thought the model on display was a dummy

Mac OS X 10.6.4: Build 10F569 steht für Entwickler bereit
Die Build 10F569 zum kommenden Update auf Mac OS X 10.6.4 steht seit gestern den Entwicklern zur Verfügung.
Das 894MB große Update führt wie schon die Vorgänger 10F566 und 10F564 keine Fehler mehr auf. Somit wird ein baldiger Release immer wahrscheinlicher, da auch der Zyklus zwischen den jeweiligen Versionen immer kürzer ausfällt.

iPhone 4 im Ausland auch ohne Vertrag erhältlich
Anders als in Deutschland ist aufgrund der Gesetze anderer Länder eine Exklusivpartnerschaft zwischen Apple und einem Mobilfunkanbieter nicht zulässig. Das ermöglicht es den Kunden, sogenannte "Neverlock"-Geräte zu kaufen, die unabhängig von Updates mit jeder x-beliebigen SIM-Karte funktionieren. In Frankreich erscheint das iPhone 4 am 24. Juni für 629 Euro (16GB) bzw. 739 Euro (32GB), in England für rund 600 Euro (16GB) bzw. 720 Euro (32GB). Die Vorbestellung ist auf zwei iPhones pro Person limitiert. Rheinland-Pfalz stellt Strafantrag gegen Google
Der Datenschutzbeauftragte von Rheinland-Pfalz, Edgar Wagner, hat bei allen acht Staatsanwaltschaften des Bundeslands Strafantrag gegen Google gestellt. Er begründet diesen Schritt damit, dass der Internetkonzern mit seinen Street-View-Fahrzeugen WLAN-Daten rheinland-pfälzischer Bürger rechtswidrig erfasst habe. Safari 5: Apfel-Z holt geschlossenes Tab-Fenster zurück
In Safari 4 hatte das Tastenkürzel “Command/Apfel-Z” zur Folge, dass die zuletzt eingegebenen Daten in ein Feld etc. wieder erscheinen.
Mit Safari 5 hat Apple auch das Schließen von Tabs in diesen Befehl eingeschlossen.

Kinect Adventures preview unearths our frightening lack of coordination
Maybe we came into it as pre-judgers, but there's nothing about Kinect Adventures that really redeems the experience in our biased, fun-hating eyes. We're not really sure if our bigger problem is with the loose controls or the actual gameplay concepts, but it's certainly a mix of both. We started out with the mining cart obstacle course, which has a certain charm in its simplicity: side step, jump, duck, and the occasional arm spread to gather tokens. These grander gestures seemed pretty easy to handle, and while we'd certainly grow bored of the game after 30 minutes or so, it would at least be a good 30 minutes

iPhone 4 im Schweizer Apple Online Store (ohne Sunrise)
Heute Morgen war der Apple Online Store für längere Zeit nicht erreichbar. In den Ländern welche das neue iPhone bereits am 24. Juni erhalten —so zum Beispiel in Deutschland — kann das neue Apple-Mobiltelefon mittlerweile vorbestellt werden. Die Gerätepreise liegen dabei zwischen einem und vierhundert Euro. In der Schweiz ist das iPhone diesmal erst in der zweiten Länder-Tranche erhältlich; diese werden irgendwann im Juli beliefert.
Nachdem heute Morgen, wie erwähnt der Apple Online Store längere Zeit offline war und dann mit einem neuen Mac mini wieder online kam, erscheint nun neu auch das iPhone im Schweizer Apple Online Store. Wie wir aus geschäftsnahen Quellen wissen, versucht Apple künftig auch in der Schweiz das iPhone via Apple Online Store zu vertreiben, jedoch sollen hier noch keine konkreten Entscheide gefallen worden sein. Would you look at, some love for the seemingly abandoned desktop crowd. Apple has today unveiled a fresh-looking Mac mini, which benefits from a unibody aluminum exterior and power grunt under the hood. Prices start rolling at $699, where you'll get a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. Facebook-CEO Zuckerberg beschwert sich über iPhone
Der Facebook-CEO und Gründer Mark Zuckerberg scheint mit seinem iPhone nicht vollständig zufrieden zu sein. Apple Store nicht mehr zu erreichen
Der deutsche und amerikanische Apple Store sind nicht mehr zu erreichen, es erscheint die bekannte Meldung "We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly". Wahrscheinlich wird die Auszeit mit den Vorbestellungen des iPhone 4 zusammenhängen, dass in den USA direkt über den Online-Store und in Deutschland ab 10 Uhr bei der Telekom vorbestellt werden kann.

Dell hit by Intel's antitrust aftershocks, prepares for $100 million settlement

IEEE working group to allow protected file sharing
The IEEE P1817 working group has come into effect last month and proposes a file protection system that aims to allow users to share their digital files but keep them protected from outright copying at the same time. Known as Digital Personal Property (DPP), it includes two pieces of a digital file and would be a less restrictive alternative to DRM file protection. There would be a title folder and a playkey. The title folder would contain the encrypted file, while a playkey would grant access.

Chrome OS build internals confirm Acer, Dell, and HP hardware coming?
We're getting closer and closer to Google's planned Chrome OS release this fall, but still the hardware side of the equation is looking a little less shiny. Verizon MiFi surgically implanted in iPad to create world's first bionic tablet
Sometimes, hackers hack without any constructive purpose -- they do it just because they can. RIM's BlackBerry 9800 and its tablet companion won't come side by side but could together bet available this year, insiders said this evening with a handful of new details [sub. required]. iPhone 4 has 802.11n, but not the "awesome" 802.11n
Filed under: iPhone I suspect many people were very happy to see that the iPhone 4 was listed as having 802.11n. I know that I was. I have a dual-band network at home which separates 802.11n from 802.11b/g, and that's made a huge difference in transfer times. But there's also another benefit of 802.11n: it can use the 5GHz frequency band instead of the 2.4Ghz. Without going into too much detail, most (but certainly not all) of the benefit of 802.11n comes if you use 5Ghz, because it isn't cluttered with other devices like 2.4Ghz is.

More Droid 2, Droid X details surface in leaked commercials
We've already gotten a pretty good look at both the Droid 2 and Droid X and some of their purported specs, and it looks like we can now fill in a few more gaps thanks to a set of leaked slides for some new Droid commercials. Despite rejecting them at one point, Apple has now decided to allow two uncensored comic book adaptions of classic literature back into the App Store, a report says. iMovie for iPhone will need A4 chip, won't run on iPad
iMovie for iPhone will be one of the most demanding mobile video editing apps to date when it's released, contacts within Apple said today. Moodagent 2.0: A great app becomes awesome
Filed under: iPhoneA good number of us at TUAW love Syntonetic's Moodagent app; it creates instant playlists around a mood you select, fitting the music to your state of mind. We reviewed it in December, and caught up with Syntonetic's president Richard French at Macworld who told me that the app had created profiles for over 30 million songs and has had over 1 billion songs requested.

White iPhone 4 likely not available at launch
The popular rumor going around right now at the eleventh hour is that AT&T will only be offering the black iPhone 4 models for pre-order tomorrow and at launch, with their white counterparts coming "later this Summer." Considering the fact that the white version of the 4 is quite a bit more distinctive than the 3G / 3GS, that's a bummer if true -- but what we don't know is whether this is strictly limited to AT&T. It's entirely possible that Apple and third-party retailers will be offering the white models, and AT&T's own distribution channel might just be suffering from some sort of buffoonery (that's our hope, anyhow). Motorola takes on carrier vet to handle cellphone strategy
Motorola hoped to kickstart its phone strategy today by hiring on a corporate VP dedicated to strategy. John Bucher will control the direction of both the company's Mobile Devices group as well as its Home Business area. The exec is expected to help reinforce the company's attempt to gain smartphone market share.
