Intel: Atom Z600 tablets won't ship for at least six months
Intel's ultramobile VP Anand Chandrasekher dashed hopes of cutting-edge x86 tablets in the near future by warning those at Computex that tablets based on the Atom Z600 likely won't ship this year. He put the launches of touch-only Z600 tablets between six to 12 months away. Smartphones wouldn't arrive until even late with the first half of 2011 as the likely target.

News: AT&T muddies fate of $15 iPad 3G plan
AT&T has delivered contradictory statements regarding the future of the 250MB for $15 iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G data plan to separate publications. Telefonica gets behind MeeGo, says 'smartphones, netbooks, tablets, and internet connected TVs' are possibilities
Virtually all of the MeeGo buzz since Intel and Nokia's tie-up back in February has been focused on high-end smartphones, tablets, and netbooks, but Telefonica reminds us that there's another potential target for the platform, too -- connected TVs. Plyxim intros overhauled Exibia 2.0 broadcaster
Plyxim has introduced v2.0 of Exibia, a utility for uploading and scheduling stills and QuickTime-compatible videos through a central server. New to the program is a redesigned user interface, the ability to create and schedule video playlists, and complete web-based administration of all program settings. Eton Sourla iPod sound system is rugged, splash-proof and solar-powered
Solar-powered sound systems are certainly nothing new, but Etón has taken things a bit further than most with its new Soulra system, which not only adds an iPhone / iPod dock to the equation, but wraps it in a rugged, splash-proof enclosure. That obviously makes it better suited for the beach or pool-side than some other options, but you'll also naturally get an AC adapter and line-in to use it at home and connect other audio devices. HyperImage 3.0 adds new image search tools
KavaSoft has announced HyperImage 3.0, a update of its app for downloading web photo galleries. The software includes a built-in image browser, used to both manage and view downloaded files. The v3.0 upgrade incorporates a new image search feature, allowing users to set a minimum image size, as well as find clip art, line drawings, or people's faces. Search criteria can also be based on color, and deliberately omit adult content.

Candid answers from AT&T on the new iPhone data plans

After AT&T announced this morning that it was backing away from its well-priced iPad data plans, many of our readers had questions about how this change would work, and how it would affect them both as Apple-specific customers and as AT&T customers in general. Foxconn raises employee pay by 30 percent
As of June 1st, Foxconn has raised the pay for all of its Chinese production workers by 30 percent, according to parent company Hon Hai. Foxconn last week said that it would be raising pay by an average of 20 percent, but this drew fire from labor activists, who argued that it would not have much impact. The company is a major manufacturer, with clients including Apple, Dell, Sony, Motorola and HP; it has drawn fire for harsh working conditions however, believed to be a factor in 10 suicides that have occurred in a matter of months.

Nikon D8000 may replace D90
A gathering amount of rumors might have given clues as to the expected replacement for the Nikon D90. Possibly called the D8000, it would be the first real Nikon DSLR outside of the D3x to shoot over 12 megapixels and would have both a sensor between 16 and 18 megapixels as well as 1080p video. Other details aren't mentioned by Nikon Rumors but might be inherited from the D300s or D3s.

im Test: Creative ZiiSound D5
Neben zwei Kopfhörern lieh uns Creative für einen Test einen Lautsprecher für iPhone und iPod. So weit nichts ungewöhnliches, Lautsprecher haben wir uns schon des öfteren angesehen. Doch dieser Lautsprecher ist etwas besonderes. Auf den ersten Blick sieht man dem, in schlichtem Design gehaltenen, Gerät die Besonderheit nicht an. Doch befasst man sich mit dem ZiiSound D5, erkennt man, dass das 'normale' Dock für den iPod fehlt. Statt dessen ist eine Kerbe im hinteren Teil eingelassen. In einer der Kartons findet sich dann ein Element, das sich in diese Kerbe einsetzten lässt und an dem auch der vermisste Dockconnector ist. Angeschlossen an einen iPod oder ein iPhone und nach einem Druck auf den 'connect' Knopf beginnt nach kurzer Zeit Musik aus dem Lautsprecher zu erklingen.

Verizon looking to partner up for rural LTE deployments
If you're wondering why T-Mobile doesn't have 3G in the middle of the Mojave, the answer's pretty simple: it's hard for any of the Big Four to justify spending millions of dollars on infrastructure in sparsely-populated areas. Rather than ignore it and leave the spectrum blank, though, Verizon's asking other companies to step in and share the responsibilities -- sort of -- by letting partners do most of the hard work (build towers and operate backhaul) while Big Red chips in its 700MHz spectrum holdings and "core LTE equipment." Kno outs dual tablet, hopes to oust iPad in education
Kno today used the D8 conference to formally unveil its self-titled tablet. The tablet carries dual 14-inch screens and is conceived as a replacement for school textbooks and uses a custom, multi-touch version of Linux optimized for books. Kno textbooks themselves support on-screen notes, highlights and "stickies," and a stylus comes with designed with handwriting in mind.

ASUS Xonar Xense Audio Bundle reviewed, deemed very good (and very pricey)
ASUS has made quite a few admirers with its Xonar high-end sound card line over the years, and it looks like the new Xonar Xense Audio Bundle is another feather in its cap. Essentially a Xonar Xense card with a pair of Sennheiser PC 350 headphones thrown in for good measure, this bad boy features two 1/4-inch jacks (one for headphones, one for a mic), coax S/PDIF output, and 3.1 surround sound. Time Magazine updates iPhone app to 2.0
Filed under: App StoreTime Inc. has updated the free TIME Mobile iPhone app to version 2.0, building on input from readers of the previous version.
The app interface has undergone a huge redesign and is now much faster than before, answering one of the biggest gripes about the earlier version. Shots emerge of new iPhone with white back

AdMob: 38% of iPads already outside the US, ad SDK up
AdMob today discovered that the iPad has already had a strong presence outside of the US. About 38 percent of iPads sold in May were used in other countries. The international launch triggered the spike in the last three days of the month, although Chinese use has always been relatively high even though it hasn't had an official launch.

More details on AT&T wireless data: grandfathering, checking your data usage

In case you missed it early this morning, AT&T's new mobile data plans (DataPlus, DataPro and Tethering) have given up on the idea of unlimited data in favor of a split tier of 200MB at the low end ($15) and 2GB at the high end ($25), with a $20 supplement for tethering (but hey -- tethering! and only six months late!). There is also a new high-end plan for the iPad, $25 for 2GB as well. In the midst of the ire and anxiety, a few points have been clarified over the past few hours.

Lego printer writes 'Hello World' with felt-tipped pen (video)
We've seen some pretty amazing Lego creations over the years, and this has to be one of our favorites. (Or at least, one of today's favorites.) A YouTuber named "horseattack" has assembled a Lego printer that uses little more than a felt tip pen to greet us all with a hearty "Hello World" (although we're sure it can write other stuff as well). Microsoft responds to Google moving away from Windows, calls it ironic
Google made some waves earlier this week by reportedly moving employees off of Windows and onto Mac OS X and Linux machines -- although the company wouldn't confirm the switch, the move was said to be precipitated by security issues after Chinese hackers attacked the search giant back in January. Flurry reacts to Jobs criticisms about device data
Flurry is changing its approach to collecting analytics in light of complaints from Apple, says the company's VP of marketing, Peter Farago. Latest Android stats show pre-2.1 versions still reign supreme
Fragmentation's a red herring, eh, Google? We'd suggest you look at your own stats, where -- as of yesterday, anyway -- fragmentation was alive and well, no matter how you define it. In the two-week period of Google's data collection ending June 1, some 54.5 percent of devices in the field were still using pre-Eclair versions of Android, a pretty sorry stat considering that it was released back in late 2009 and xda-developers members have proven countless times that every Android phone ever made can run 2.0 and above with aplomb. Foul Ball? MLB inserts ads into At Bat 2010 for iPad

Verizon already testing EVDO iPads, LTE to come?
A new rumor asserts that Verizon is actively testing iPads on its 3G network. The "highly placed" source claims the Apple tablets are using the EVDO portion of Verizon's CDMA network. They also told BGR that LTE for Verizon's future 4G network may come about, but they didn't clarify whether this was part of the same model or a separate, future iPad.

Audio specialist iHome has launched the iP49, a new portable speaker system for iPhones and iPods. The unit folds for travel, but is still said to produce 20W of output using four neodymium compression drivers. Equalizer controls improve bass, treble or simulated 3D effects. Researchers in California have developed a prototype camera called I2T that can capture video, parse out the background, analyze the action, and then export the content to a text file "that can be searched using simple text search," according to Song-Chun Zhu, lead researcher and professor of statistics and computer science at UCLA. Apple has reportedly begun seeding a sixth beta of Mac OS X 10.6.4 to developers, build 10F564. At 600MB, the package is approximately 20MB larger than the previous release, build 10F58. Texas investigating Apple, publishers over e-book pricing
Texas' attorney general is investigating Apple and publishers for possible anti-competitive e-book pricing, multiple sources said on Wednesday [sub. required]. At least Hachette and HarperCollins have confirmed they were asked to provide documents, but Apple is also believed to be a target. Rückendeckung für Foxconn Technology
Nachdem es in den vergangenen Wochen und Monaten vielfach Kritik am Apple-Zulieferer und High-Tech Konzern Foxconn Technology gab, stärkte Steve Jobs dem Unternehmen nun den Rücken. The iPad as a new "walled garden" of content
John Battelle's Searchblog has an interesting post up about whether or not the iPad can be categorized as a disappointment. He begins with a mea culpa; while he predicted earlier this year that the iPad would more or less fail, the sales figures from earlier this week have proven him wrong. However, he says that the question then turns to whether the iPad will be a disappoint in its larger goal: to revolutionize computing and use the App Store model as a replacement for the usual download-and-install app method that we currently use on desktops.

Quanta and 3M's DST touchscreens like styli and fingers too
Spend a few days with a capacitive touch device and moving back to resistive can feel a bit clumsy. Quanta and 3M are saying they have created a new type of touch sensitive screen that could make capacitive feel relatively just as vague, what they're calling dispersive signal technology. DST is a layer of "specially-designed glass" that detects the pressure of a finger or a stylus (or, probably, other things too) with high precision, all without making the display thicker. Chrome OS only due by late fall
Google's Chrome lead Sundar Pichai told those at the Computex show today that Chrome OS won't ship until the "late fall." The release was pushed back towards the end of the original second-half 2010 target as Google wanted to be "selective" as to how the hardware and software came about. Chrome OS will only be usable with netbooks and notebooks at first and has a fixed set of requirements, such as a solid-state drive.

iPad traffic spikes on the weekends

Sonic buys DivX, opens door to CinemaNow for Mac
Sonic today acquired video codec maker DivX for $3.75 per share, or the equivalent of $323 million. The deal gives the owner of Roxio one of the more popular video formats and are intended to give Sonic a better means of providing video over the Internet, especially for home electronics. Many Blu-ray and DVD players, TVs, and set-top boxes already support DivX videos, and DivX is already using copy protection approved by movie studios, Sonic said.

‘My Frame’-Rauswurf und Steve Jobs Antwort zur konstanten App-Store-Kritik
Nachdem ich mir die, mittlerweile auszugsweise verfügbaren Videoausschnitte der D8-Konferenz mit Steve Jobs zu Gemüte geführt habe, gilt es doch noch einmal auf eine Nachricht von Gestern detaillierter einzugehen.
Wie an dieser Stelle bereits Erwähnung fand, warf Apple die Anwendung ‘My Frame’ aus ihrem App Store, weil sie angeblich einen “eigenen Desktop erzeugt”. Diese Aussage stammt nicht von einem ungeschulten App-Store-Mitarbeiter, der das wankelmütige Regelwerk für Zugangsgenehmigungen versuchte eigenständig zu interpretieren, sondern von Jobs persönlich. AT&T intros cheaper, capped data; iPhone tethering with 4.0
AT&T today completely overhauled its data plans to at once limit them but also make them cheaper. The new maximum plan, DataPro, costs $25 per month but provides 2GB of data versus the earlier, $30 unlimited plan. In exchange, AT&T is partly dropping direct overage fees: those who run over the 2GB cap will pay $10 more for an extra 1GB of transfers.

Apple verteilt weiteren 10.6.4-Build an Entwickler
Apple in der Nacht auf heute einen weiteren 10.6.4-Build an die registrierten Entwickler verteilt. Die Build-Nummer lautet «10F564», angesichts der Nummer des letzten Builds (10F58), dürfte hier jedoch ein Schreibfehler passiert sein und die richtige Nummer «10F64» sein. So oder so listet Apple auch bei 10F564 in den Versionsnotizen keine bekannten Fehler mehr.
Die Entwickler werden weiterhin aufgefordert, ihren Fokus beim testen der neuen Vorabversion des nächsten Mac-OS-X-Minor-Updates auf die Grafiktreiber, SMB, USB, Voice Over und VPN zu legen. Das Update ist aktuell zwischen 600 und 880 MB gross.

AT&T axes unlimited data, unveils tethering price

Well, it was too good to last. To the wailing and gnashing of teeth, AT&T has given the ax to the unlimited data plans for iPad and iPhone customers. AT&T announced two new data plans -- priced at $15 and $25 each -- with the cap on the higher-end plan set at 2GB per month. If you want tethering on top of this, you have to fork over an additional $20 when iPhone 4.0 arrives, most likely at WWDC.

Ein findiger Nutzer hat in der Beta 4 zum neuen iPhone OS 4 eine Taschenlampenfunktion im Lockscreen entdeckt.

Skype-Nutzung: Telekom droht mit einseitiger Vertragskündigung
Die Wirtschaftswoche befasst sich in einem Artikel mit der neuen Möglichkeit, Skype auch im Mobilfunknetzwerk zu nutzen und fragte auch direkt mal bei der Telekom nach, was man dort eigentlich über die mobile Internettelefonie denkt. Man ist nicht erfreut: Kunden dürften gesalzene Zusatzrechnungen erwarten, im Extremfall will man härtere Maßnahmen einleiten. When we last caught up with PixelQi at CES, we were downright ecstatic about its dual-mode 3Qi LCDs with switchable backlights, though we had a few wants, including touchscreen support and better viewing angles. Adobe hat nach einer Betarunde nun die finale Version des Rohdatenentwicklers Camera Raw 6.1 vorgestellt. Damit werden Rohdaten von zehn weiteren Kameramodellen erfasst. Nützliches iPad Zubehör
Da viele inzwischen ein iPad haben dürften, müsste der Bedarf an praktischem Zubehör recht groß sein. Das iPad selbst wird mit recht wenig Beiwerk ausgeliefert und Apple lässt sich jedes Extra teuer bezahlen. Ein Grund, mal einen Blick in die Zubehörschublade der Onlinehändler zu werfen und nachzuschauen, was es bereits für den Tablet-PC zu kaufen gibt. Ein neues Patent zeigt einen Weg aus dem Akkuproblem
Eine der größten Schwachstellen von modernen Smartphones ist die recht kurze Laufzeit des Akkus. Dies trift auch auf das iPhone zu. Ein Apple zugeschriebenes Patent zeigt jetzt einen möglichen Weg aus dieser Misere. Hinter dem Display von iPhone und weiteren Geräten möchte Apple Solarzellen anbringen, die den Akku des iPhones beim benutzen oder auch im Ruhezustand laden können. Würde dieses Patent umgesetzt, wäre es nicht nur ein möglicher Weg zu einer längeren Laufzeit des Geräts, sondern auch ein weiterer Schritt Apple als 'grüne Firma' zu positionieren. Mac OS X 10.6.4 Build 10F564 gesichtet
Kurz vor einem Möglichen Release häufen sich die Updates für die aktuelle Entwicklerversion von Mac OS X 10.6.4. In der neusten Build mit der Nummer 10F564 werden die Nutzer gebeten, erneut den Fokus auf Grafiktreiber, USB, SMB, Voice Over und VPN zu legen. Ganz konkret behebt das Update einen Fehler im Zusammenhang mit Keyboard und Trackpad, sowie einen Bug im Startvorgang von Adobe CS 3. Apple nennt in dieser Build keine bekannten Fehler. iPhone OS 4.0 mit Taschenlampen-Modus
Ein deutscher Beta-Tester des iPhone OS 4.0 hat entdeckt, dass das Betriebssystem über eine Art eingebauten Taschenlampen-Modus verfügt. Steve Jobs, CEO von Apple, ist einer der wahrscheinlich seltensten Interviewpartner der Branche. Verglichen mit Steve Wozniak bekommt man den anderen Apple Gründer so gut wie nie außerhalb einer Keynote zu Gesicht. Foxconn increases wages by 30 percent as deaths continue to mount
According to Reuters, Foxconn will be raising worker wages an additional 10% from the original 20% raise announced last week. Foxconn spokesman, Arthur Huang, said that the 30% base wage increase takes effect immediately. Foxconn admits that it hopes to earn the respect of its workers and raise efficiency with the pay increase while offsetting rising costs on the Chinese mainland. The company's shares fell by 2% following the announcement (in a market down just 0.4%, relatively), worried perhaps that the raise would erode operating profits. Ein Team aus Schweizer Software-Entwicklern möchte mit «Raskin» den Mac-Desktop neu erfinden. Inspiriert von den Visionen vom mittlerweile leider verstorbenen Macintosh-Erfinder Jef Raskin werden im nach ihm benannten Projekt alle Inhalte eines Computers auf einer Ebene dargestellt. Mittels Zoom und Pan (ziehen) kann auf der neuartigen Visuellen Benutzeroberfläche navigiert und organisiert werden, ohne dabei mit Finder-Fenstern oder klassischen Ordnern in Kontakt zu kommen. Apple-Boss Steve Jobs war letzte Nacht Gast auf der angesehenen "All Things Digital"-Konferenz des amerikanischen Wall Street Magazine. Im Laufe seines Interviews gab er kurze, aber teils ausgesprochen interessante Statements zu aktuellen Themen und Gerüchten ab. Jobs hints AT&T's 3G woes may be fixed by end of summer
Apple chief Steve Jobs during his time at the D8 conference claimed that AT&T was making a more substantial upgrade to its 3G network in the near term. He answered during the Q&A portion that things "should get better by the end of the summer" and implied that much more was in development than has been hinted so far. The CEO didn't have a precise technical explanation but likened it almost to surgery, where the situation may appear to decay before it's improved.

Steve Jobs on lost iPhone 4G prototype: it's an 'amazing' story
We can't say we expected Jobs to do a ton of talking about that little "lost" iPhone prototype during his interview at D8, but he was of course asked about it, and he did do some talking about it. While he started out with the expected "there's an ongoing investigation" statement, Jobs soon got on a bit of a roll, saying that "this is a story that's amazing" -- that "it's it's got theft, it's got buying stolen property, it's got extortion, I'm sure there's some sex in there the whole thing is very colorful." HyperImage 3.0 adds new image-searching tools
KavaSoft has announced HyperImage 3.0, a new version of its application for downloading web photo galleries. The software includes a built-in image browser that enables users to manage and view downloaded images. With the latest release a new image search feature has been integrated, which enable users to set the minimum image size for high-resolution photographs, as well as search by photos, clip art, line drawings, or peopleís faces. HSC Edit 2 plug-in adds 64-bit support for Aperture 3
HumanSoftware has upgraded its photographic effects plug-ins, HSC Edit, for Apple's Aperture software. The set is spread across 14 modules featuring more than 5000 individual effects. Each tool provides a wide range of manual variations and can be applied to a single image or processed across a larger batch. The modules include effects organized around color adjustments, depth of field, focus, noise, and lighting or lens effects, among others.

Toshiba flexes its paper-thin LCD muscle, moves the world (video)
Toshiba's found an interesting use for flexible LCD technology: user input. At SID 2010, the Japanese display manufacturer showed off an 8.4-inch wide, 0.1mm thick SVGA panel that could be grabbed and physically bent to zoom in or out using Google Earth. Lala.com ist tot - es lebe iTunes Replay?
Aufgekauft und dichtgemacht: Apple hatte angekündigt, den zuvor übernommenen Musik-Streaming-Dienst lala.com Ende Mai zu schliessen. Jetzt ist die Seite offline. Es gibt bereits seit einiger Zeit Gerüchte, das Apple in Kürze einen eigenen Streaming-Dienst in Form von iTunes Replay starten wird. Die entsprechenden Serverkapazitäten baut Apple bereits seit Sommer 2009 im US-Bundesstaat North Carolina auf. Es ist deshalb nicht auszuschliessen, dass Steve Jobs bei der Eröffnung der WWDC am 7. T'Light lamp for major nerds with good taste (should such a thing exist)
The T'Light lamp isn't the first one we've seen which boasts things like chargers, docks and USB. It is, however, the nicest looking one we've ever seen. NVIDIA brings a dual GTX 470 prototype to Computex, causes power shortages in Taipei

NVIDIA says Android evolving for tablets
NVIDIA chief Jen-Sun Huang today hinted that Android would be adapted for tablets. Google's platform was designed for smartphones at first, but the OS developer is said to be aware of the needs of a tablet and to be changing Android to suit its needs. What those changes would involve weren't mentioned, but they would unite with the hardware in the fall.

Dell Inspiron 14z dips to $399, for now
It may be over a year since we first got our hands on Dell's thin-and-light Inspiron 14z, but the laptop still certainly holds its own in its class, and Dell has now made an offer that's awfully hard to refuse -- it's lowered the price to just $399. That will of course get you the lowest-end, Pentium Dual-Core SU4100 model, but you can upgrade to a Core 2 Duo for $65 extra, and the rest of the basic specs aren't too shabby, including 3GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a DVD burner. iHome on Tuesday shipped its iP39 dock for iPods and iPhones for the kitchen. It features a stainless steel finish to match other kitchenwares, and has two built-in cooking timers along with a retractable docking station.
