Cisco gets into tablets with Android-based Cius
Cisco's rumored tablet was made real today as the company confirmed the Cius, its first tablet. The 7-inch slate works as a full Android tablet with apps, but it has an especially heavy focus on Cisco's videoconferencing features. A front camera provides full speed 720p video; a back five-megapixel camera helps both for stills and for streaming 640x480 video.

Samsung Intercept to replace the Moment on Sprint?
Looks like the Moment's over for Samsung and Sprint -- check out these these leaked shots of the SPH-M910 Intercept, said to be the carrier's new mid-range Android slider. Screen size is said to be the same at 3.2 inches, and the keyboard certainly looks much nicer, but we can't help but be bummed to hear this thing will launch Froyo-free with Android 2.1 -- a 2.2 update is said to be a "high probability," but it took Samsung and Sprint some seven months to update the Moment to 2.1, so we're not holding our breath. The rumored launch date is July 11, so we'll see how much of this is true around then -- for now, we're betting Samsung will be doing its best to keep us focused

Madrid, Barcelona, Chicago Apple Stores take steps forward
Progress has been made in the development of three upcoming Apple Stores, reports say. Two of them are located in Spain; a Madrid outlet will be situated in the Xanadú shopping center next to Nike Madrid, and has already had a black construction facade erected. In Barcelona, meanwhile, a similar facade has been put in place inside the La Maquinista mall. No opening dates have been set, but construction is unlikely to go on any longer than the fall.

Is your iPhone 4 exhibiting proximity sensor issues?

I happened by a mirror while talking on the iPhone 4 last night and saw my screen lighting up, turning off and lighting up again erratically. I observed the behavior, worst when holding the phone in my left hand, for the duration of the call. I was more than a little irritated, as this was a feature since the first iPhone and, at the time, a big deal

MOTU outs ultra-portable MicroBook audio interface
MOTU has introduced its small MicroBook audio interface on Tuesday. Powered entirely by a USB connection and compatible with Macs and Windows PCs, the MicroBook gets four inputs and two outputs, letting users connect a microphone, guitar, keyboard or other stereo line level device and record simultaneously. A 3.5mm input and output lets users connect sources such as iPods or other portable audio devices, as well as computer speakers.

YouTube kind to HTML5, says Flash is still needed
YouTube Software Engineer John Harding today explained that the video site was still closely tied to Flash. While the site is "excited" about HTML5 and is using it for most videos in its optional player and mobile devices, many of the site's features still need Adobe's plugin to work well or to work at all. At a minimum, embedding needs the option as videos otherwise can't port over their ads, annotations or notes.

Bloomberg: vPhone coming in January
Filed under: iPhoneThat iPhone on Verizon rumor just won't die -- Bloomberg is now reporting that we'll see an iPhone on Verizon's service in January of next year. "Two people familiar with the plans" say that AT&T exclusivity will finally end next year, and analysts say that if that happens, Apple will sell lots more iPhones, up to 3 million more per quarter to Verizon's 90 million or so customers.

ARM says Wi-Fi too inefficient
While speaking at a wireless conference in Cambridge, England on Tuesday, chipmaker ARM president Tudor Brown said the power required for wireless communications in computers is too high and the industry has a duty to reduce it. He went on to say the Atheros Wi-Fi link on a notebook is only between 1 and 2 percent efficient. Brown believes a system is needed that draws between two or three times less power.

Air Phone No.4 clones iPhone 4, FaceTime
The first iPhone 4 clone is now out in China, just five days after the original's launch. Called Air Phone NO.4, it's a little thicker, at about 0.37 inches, and is not a smartphone despite copying Apple's icon layout and interface. Twin 0.3-megapixel cameras allow for self-portraits and regular shooting; the company goes so far as to produce a fake FaceTime app.

Mit dem Update 9.3.3 aktualisiert Adobe seinen Reader und schließt damit eine Sicherheitslücke die das Programm manchmal zum Absturz brachte und es ermöglichte, durch einen gezielten Angriff Kontrolle über ein fremdes System zu erlangen. Briefly: Dev tools extend cross-platform apps, voice to iOS
Rhomobile has released an updated development framework, Rhodes 2.0. The code is notable mainly for supporting app creation across several mobile platforms, including Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Symbian, webOS and Windows Mobile. All apps are native to their respective platforms, Rhomobile insists, which should avoid the restrictions of Apple's SDK rules. The v2.0 update introduces native mapping for all devices, as well as native styling. Also added is a metadata framework. Rhodes is free under the terms of the MIT License.

Apple zwingt Apfelsupport zu Namenswechsel
Verwechslungsgefahr? Nach einem Bericht von macnotes.de darf der Mac-Dienstleister Apfelsupport* nicht weiter unter diesem Namen agieren. Apple fordert eine Unterlassungserklärung und eine Umbenennung der Firma. Ausserdem müssen sowohl die eingetragenen Wortmarke, als auch die zugehörige Domain apfelsupport.de gelöscht werden. Über die näheren Gründe ist bislang nichts bekannt. Das Wiesbadener Unternehmen, das vorwiegend Firmenkunden in Sachen Mac und Netzwerk betreut, hat sich bereits in Bugsupport umbenannt.

Die taz beendet iBookstore-Angebot
Als erste Tageszeitung der Welt im iBookstore landete die taz binnen kürzester Zeit auf Platz Eins der Verkaufscharts. Doch heute die Hiobsbotschaft: Trotz des enormen Erfolges im Store wird das Angebot eingestellt. Im taz-Blog nennt Mathias Broeckers die Gründe: Als Tageszeitung mache Apple einem unnötig das Leben schwer, da es kaum möglich ist, zeitnah durch die Kontrollen des Store-Anbieters zu gelangen und jeden Tag eine neue Zeitung in den Store zu stellen. Epson shows off IU-01 interactive whiteboard module for projectors
Epson's just unveiled a new module -- the IU-01 -- which will serve as an interactive whiteboard for its projectors and eliminate the need for an actual whiteboard. It'll also come with two pens which allow for user interaction with the screen, allowing them to open and close files and programs, as well as write on the screen. A pair of sources claimed Tuesday that the Verizon iPhone would ship in January 2011. The tipsters to Bloomberg didn't mention whether it would support voice over EVDO or otherwise differentiate from the GSM version apart from the choice of network.

Yes, that is right sir, we have recorded our 200th episode. It's been a long road, four years since our first show and while only one host has made it through every episode -- but one that is -- we've had a number of great hosts and guests along the way. In fact we've had more guests than we can count and four hosts that have passed the baton, so we figured we'd take a stroll down memory lane with a few like Kevin Tofel who was one of the first hosts, and Ryan Block who was instrumental behind the scenes and even made it on a few shows. US iTunes Store adds $10 HD movies section
A new subsection has been introduced to the iTunes Store, offering movies in HD quality for $10 or less. Only 30 titles are currently featured, ranging in price from the $10 mark down to $6 for The Kovak Box. Some movies can alternately be rented in HD, for as much as $4 or at a base level of $2. Where no HD rental option is available, the section simply suggests buying in standard definition.

Sony's Yoshida says PS3 is now turning a profit, no plans for a price cut

Art Lebedev shows finished Optimus Popularis design
Art Lebedev Studio today took the wraps from the finished design of the Optimus Popularis. The new design is much more compact than the Maximus but adds an always-active status bar below the F-keys; in an example, it shows common info such as weather, stocks and new mail. As hinted at earlier, the Popularis brings more efficient key design that has the customizable displays occupy nearly the entire key surface even as the area itself is smaller.

Cisco unveils Cius Android tablet with HD video capabilities
Cisco's just announced a business-aimed Android tablet, and it's calling it the Cius. The tablet will offer HD video streaming, real-time video, multi-party conferencing, plus all the regular tablet functions like messaging, email, and browsing. We're not sure about the size of the device yet, or any of it technical specs, but we do know that it's going to weigh in at 1.15lbs, so it can't be terrifically large. GT Racing: Rennakademie HD für iPad erschienen
Gameloft hat eine iPad-Version seiner Rennsimulation “GT Racing Rennakademie” veröffentlicht. Neben hochauflösender Grafik wurden auch Cockpit-Animationen eingeführt.

Blokus HD für iPad veröffentlicht
Gameloft hat einige Zeit nach der Veröffentlichung von Blokus für iPhone und iPod Touch nun auch “Blokus HD” für iPad veröffentlicht.
Damit hält die Brettspielumsetzung von Mattel Einzug auf Apples Tablet. Gegenüber Blokus für iPhone hat Gameloft kaum Änderungen vorgenommen. Natürlich ist die Grafik hochauflösend, doch dies ist bei einer Brettspielumsetzung eher vernachlässigbar, bzw. nicht

Hulu Plus now official, brings iPad and PS3 support
Hulu today lived up to the rumors and launched Hulu Plus, its paid subscription service. The $10 monthly plan gives access to a much deeper catalog with every episode of both current and past seasons from many ABC, Fox and NBC shows, even in HD. It also becomes the first service to officially escape the desktop: it will now have native iPad and iPhone support and will finally reach the TV through the PlayStation 3 and some Samsung Blu-ray players.

Jobs not attending 2010 Allen & Co. retreat after all?
Apple's CEO might not be going to this year's Allen & Co conference after all, claims Financial Times writer Kenneth Li. "Steve Jobs is on the Sun Valley invitation list," Li writes in a new Twitter post. "But we're hearing he's not going after all. Sigh." Jobs has only attended the executive retreat twice, the last time being in 2005.

Analyst: 'Constraints' likely lowered iPhone 4 launch sales
Apple could have sold far more iPhone 4s at launch if it had been able to keep up with production demands, argues Kaufman analyst Shaw Wu in a new memo. The company sold 1.7 million units between Thursday and Saturday, beating the pace of earlier iPhone launches, and typical analyst forecasts between 1 and 1.5 million units. Wu estimates however that if Apple had invested in better production levels, it could have sold anywhere between 2 and 2.5 million phones. Shortages continue to hamper sales, since the device is virtually unavailable in some areas.

iSuppli hat die Bauteile eines 16 GB iPhone 4 untersucht und ist zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass die Bauteile rund 160 Euro (188 US-Dollar) in Einkauf kosten könnten. Die Bauteile des ersten iPhones aus dem Jahr 2007 wurden damals mit 180 Euro (217 US-Dollar), das 3G mit 136 Euro (166 US-Dollar) und das 3GS mit 139 Euro (170 US-Dollar) geschätzt. Ooma broke away from its tie-in to its own hardware on Tuesday through an iOS app, Ooma Mobile ($10, App Store). The app uses an existing Ooma account to make VoIP calls from an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch to real-world numbers, even over traditionally off-limits 3G. 3D displays and haptic interfaces come together in HIRO III
The Kawasaki and Mouri Laboratory at Gifu University in Japan are researching and developing a touch interface which, combined with 3D displays, could offer a new way to simulate the touching of objects. HIRO III is a haptic interface robot which can provide realistic kinesthetic sensations to the user's hand and fingers, while the 3D display provides the visual experience. Possible applications include medical diagnostics training, but for now, HIRO III is still in the lab. Seagate claimed a record in storage today by launching a 3TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk drive. The first of its kind packs a single, 3TB disk inside and is large enough to need a 64-bit OS to work: it needs either Mac OS X Snow Leopard and either Windows 7 or Vista in their 64-bit versions to see more than the 2.1TB inherent to drives on most 32-bit platforms. Google muss automatische Umleitung seiner chinesischen Websuche aufheben
Google hat per Blogbeitrag mitgeteilt, dass China die notwendige Internet-Content-Provider-Lizenz (ICP) nicht erneuern werde, wenn Google Besucher von Google.cn weiterhin automatisch auf die in Hongkong gehostete Site google.com.hk umleite. Um die im Juni auslaufende Lizenz erneuert zu bekommen, hat der Suchanbieter die automatische Umleitung inzwischen durch eine manuelle ersetzt. Es ist allerdings fraglich, ob diese Änderung den chinesischen Behörden genügt.

Was ist eigentlich mit iAd? Neues zur Einführung
Auf der Keynote im April stellte Apple nebst iOS 4 auch die neue Werbeplattform iAd vor. Doch wurde iOS 4 inzwischen samt neuer iPhone-Generation veröffentlicht, ist es kurzzeitig still um den neuen Werbedienst geworden. Geplanter Start von iAd ist zwar der erste Juli, jedoch fand Advertising Age in Rücksprache mit einigen Agenturen heraus, dass die meisten Kampagnen noch in der Planungsphase stecken. Zwar haben die ersten Werbeanbieter das Privileg, sich die Kampagnen von Apple realisieren zu lassen, aber auch bis dahin dauert es wohl noch eine ganze Weile. iAd steht übrigens nur für iOS 4-Geräte bereit. Namco: Neue Spiele für iPad und iPhone
Mit PAC-Match Party HD (1,59 Euro) ist eine neue PAC-MAN-Variante fürs iPad verfügbar. Thema ist das 30jährige PAC-MAN-Jubiläum und demnach gilt es, über 30 Levels hinweg Geschenke und Kuchen einzusammeln.

US-Browsermarkt: Chrome überholt erstmals Safari

Laut iSuppli sind die Preise der Materialkosten beim neuen iPhone 4 gegenüber den Vorgängermodellen ziemlich stabil geblieben. Nur das iPhone der ersten Generation hatte Materialkosten in Höhe von 223 US-Dollar. iMovie läuft auch auf dem 3GS
Bisher nahm man an, dass Apple die iMovie App vor allem wegen des A4 Prozessors und des verdoppelten Arbeitsspeichers nur auf dem iPhone 4 laufen lässt. Kommt iWork auch auf das iPhone?
Als das neue iPhone präsentiert wurde, tauchte ein Bild auf, nachdem sich Präsentationen aus Mail heraus in Keynote öffnen lassen sollten. Gimp 2.6.9 bringt Library-Updates

Die Marktforscher von iSuppli haben Apples jüngstes Smartphone auseinander genommen und die Einzelteile analysiert. Fun: Holzhand verhindert Verbindungsprobleme am iPhone 4
Das Verbindungsproblem vom neuen iPhone 4 ist nun Vergangenheit. Denn gibt jetzt iHand! Je nachdem wie man das iPhone 4 in der Hand hält, ist der Empfang über die eingebauten Antenne vom iPhone 4 gestört.
Die Lösung von Scoopertino hilft und ist dabei simpel und gleichzeitig effektiv. Wobei ich derzeit doch hoffe, dass Apple vielleicht durch ein Update vom iOS 4 auch zu einer Lösung kommen mag.

Chrome overtakes Safari for number three browser spot in the US sez StatCounter
StatCounter's issued a press release today which reports that Google's Chrome browser has overtaken Safari for third place in the United States on a weekly basis for the first time ever. Chrome nabbed the spot with an 8.97 percent share, following behind Internet Explorer with 52 percent and Firefox with 28.5 percent. Safari ranked fourth according to their stats with 8.88 percent. Globally Chrome has been in third place for some time, but this is the first time it's surpassed Safari in the United States. Android 2.2 Froyo FRF85 hitting AT&T Nexus One owners over the air right now?
We've been receiving numerous tips over the last hour that Nexus One owners on AT&T bands are receiving an over-the-air update for Android 2.2 FRF85, otherwise known as the "bulletproofed" Froyo build. No confirmation at this point, and since you're asking, no word yet either on an update for the larger T-Mobile N1 install base (though we've had at least one report of a user on FRF50 getting the OTA today). We've pinged Google for answers, will let ya know what we here.

The mechanism that opens and closes the articulated display is pretty neat -- but otherwise, there isn't much from Negri Electronics' video of its mysteriously-obtained Nokia prototype that is likely to raise many eyebrows. EU says new data roaming limits take effect July 1
In its efforts to regulate roaming fees in Europe, the European Union has reaffirmed that roaming data charges will be automatically capped at 50 Euros (about $62) before tax starting on July 1. Users can choose their own limits when traveling in other countries in Europe, and carriers will now have to send a warning message when 80 percent of that limit is reached. Once the limit is reached, they will need to cut off the data connection unless the subscriber has asked for more.

Chrome now beating Safari in the US also

StatCounter's US browser share page shows that Chrome has now overtaken Safari in these United States, moving up into third place for browser share, behind Internet Explorer and Firefox. Astute TUAW readers among you will remember that Chrome already beat Safari once, but that was for the global browser share -- now Google's browser is bigger than Apple's right here among the amber waves of grain.

Kin One drops to $29, Two drops to $49, data plans remain silly expensive
Best Buy's already taken to offering Microsoft's Kin One for free and the Two for $49 on sale, but it looks like Verizon's officially lowering the price tag on its socialphones: the Kin One will henceforth be $29 while the Two drops to $49 for good. The ever-reliable Ina Fried at CNET says the move is a direct response to lagging sales; workers at one Verizon store told her that Kin devices are being outsold by the Palm Pre. iSuppli: iPhone 4 parts cost $187.51
Filed under: iPhoneiSuppli has done its usual thing with the16GB iPhone 4's components, calculating the raw cost of each of them, and the total comes to: US$187.51. The most expensive thing in the phone is the retina display screen, which is supposedly running Apple $28.50 per unit. The A4 processor adds $10.75 to the unit price, and the gyroscope adds $2.60, as compared to the accelerometer's estimated 65 cent cost.
