New Xbox 360 shows up in the wild, gets unboxed, torn asunder and modded
Hey, look at what we have here -- it's the new Xbox 360 that was just debuted a few days back -- and there's a lot going down with this one which has somehow made its way into the wild. We get the full unboxing treatment, a detailed teardown, and finish up with some delicious, light-paneled modding. While we can't really gather much beyond what we already know, the drive appears to be a Philips Lite-On DG-16D4S -- just in case you were wondering about that one. There's a video below showing off this one's new, modded exterior.

Canada's Fido drops iPhone 3G, 3GS prices
Canadian carrier Fido, a subsidiary of Rogers, has dropped prices on the iPhone 3G and 3GS. As the 3G is being phased out entirely, a refreshed 8GB model can be had for $29 under a three-year contract. A new 8GB 3G is $49, and a 16GB version is $149. The pricing of the latter is incongruous though, as a 16GB 3GS is now $99, and the 32GB option is $149.

Who wants an iPad? Almost everyone!
Filed under: iPadMy wife and I are currently cruising the Baltic aboard the Disney Magic. Of course, two things we couldn't leave at home were our iPhones and iPads. One thing we found immediately was that many of the crew members and passengers on the Magic had never seen an iPad, and they were fascinated with the device.
As an example, Burak, the manager of one of the three restaurants on the ship, had me demo the iPad to his wife. AT&T MicroCell use to count against data caps
AT&T has warned that its recent data caps will still apply when using the 3G MicroCell. Despite its creating a 3G cell site of its own, it's still considered part of the network and counts towards the 200MB or 2GB ceilings, even though the Internet connection handles much more of the traffic. AT&T has justified the lack of free data by noting that the data still goes over its network at other stages.

iPhone owners to reach 100 million by 2011?
Apple could potentially more than triple 2009 iPhone ownership by the end of 2011, reaching 100 million subscribers, claims Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. Roughly 30 million subscribers were recorded by the end of last year, and Huberty estimates that Apple will sell at least 42 million more phones by the end of 2010. This assumes a 30 percent upgrade rate; if upgrades reach 50 percent, sales could hit 48 million.

iPad hacked with Verizon MiFi innards
Filed under: iPadHere's a mod for everyone crying into their Rice Crispies because the iPad isn't on Verizon. Someone at the Dish Network Store has taken apart a Verizon MiFi and crammed its brain into a 3G iPad (after removing the AT&T parts, of course). The result is a Verizon-powered iPad that's also a mobile hotspot called the "iPiFi."

Behind the scenes with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 team: 'I think about this really as a first release'
CNET had a chance recently to get embedded deep within Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 engineering group, listening in on meetings with OEMs, arguments, celebrations, and all the other drama that comes with trying to ship a huge product that's new from the ground up in just a couple years' time. There aren't any blockbuster revelations in here -- no launch devices, ship dates, or prices -- but it's an interesting look at the project from Windows Phone engineering VP Terry Myerson's perspective, who acknowledges that it'll take a long time and several releases to catch up to the competition but still thinks they'll "actually have a lot of happy customers" with version one.

iPhone 4 confirmed carrying 512MB of RAM
Apple in one of its WWDC developer sessions is now known to have confirmed that the iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM. Staff at Session 147, on performance tuning for the iPhone, confirmed that the new phone has twice as much RAM as the iPad and iPhone 3GS despite coming just a few months after the iPad. The extra room could lead to some apps being optimized just for the extra memory.

Filed under: WWDCPaid members of the iOS developer program who did not attend WWDC may want to head on over to Apple's WWDC 2010 video page. Roughly a billion hours (if my quick calculations can be believed) of WWDC session video is now available for download from iTunes. You'll be able to find videos on topics from application frameworks to graphics to core OS topics to dev tools. Sample code and slides are also available.
Please keep in mind that this material remains under NDA, so we will leave the content specifics as an exercise for the reader.

iPhone 4 to have 512MB of RAM, double the 3GS and iPad?
Apple has traditionally been -- how shall we put it -- cagey with revealing memory and CPU specifics of its mobile devices, but MacRumors is today reporting its discovery that the fourth-gen iPhone's RAM apportionment will be a very healthy 512MB. FCC near approving AT&T's buyout of Verizon rural lines
The FCC is on the verge of approving AT&T's proposed buyout of rural frequencies from Verizon, leaks from within the deal said today. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has reportedly already passed a request that the other four commissioners approve the deal before they formally vote on the deal in the next few weeks. AT&T would be paying almost $2.4 billion for airwaves that Verizon has to abandon for its acquisition of Alltel to remain intact.

WWDC 2010 session videos go online
Less than a week after the conclusion of the event, Apple has posted the session videos for WWDC 2010 online. These cover the 100-plus instructional courses held during the week, which were intended to aid developers in coding for Mac OS X or iOS. The videos are available in HD or SD quality, and can be imported into iTunes for viewing or sync with Apple handhelds.

FCC votes to reclassify Internet access
The FCC today said (PDF) it had voted 3-2 in favor of beginning procedures to reclassify Internet access and take action on its proposed National Broadband Plan. Officials plan to go ahead with their initial plans and are asking for comments both from the public and from the industry by July 15. First replies from the FCC to the comments should be ready by August 12.

News: iBooks 1.1 to offer iTunes Digital Booklet support
Apple has posted a new Knowledge Base document revealing that iBooks 1.1 and iTunes 9.2 now support the sync of iTunes Digital Booklets to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. According to the document, users simply need to select the desired iTunes Digital Booklet from the Music library, click Get Info, change the Media type to Book, and hit okay. KT brings the Nexus One to South Korea, complete with Froyo
The Nexus One may have taken a little while to reach South Korea, but it looks like KT is doing its best to make up for lost time -- the carrier has just announced that it will not only be offering the Nexus One, but that it will come complete with Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Fujitsu and Toshiba cellphone units merge, become second-largest Japanese mobile company
Merger mania in the Japanese smartphone market, as Toshiba and Fujitsu have decided to combine their mobile operations, creating what will be the second-largest Japanese phone maker after Sharp. Mobile app downloads seen declining by 2013
Mobile app stores could peak in as little as two years, ABI Research warned today. It expects the download rate to peak by 2012 or 2013 and to slowly decline from then onwards. Downloads could still be popular with 1.2 billion apps downloaded in 2015, but the decline would be quick enough that companies may not want to depend heavily on apps in the long term.

Air Video Server (Free) This is a great little app that for people who have lots of videos on their computer, but want to watch them on your iPhone, iPod Touch, and an iPad. Previously what I had to do was to convert the videos to MP4 (often a very slow process), import them into iTunes, and tweak the metadata. Only then could I watch the movies I have on my iDevices. That still wasn't a great solution, since those videos then took up space on those devices.

Future Apple handhelds to support HD Radio?
Apple could be preparing to add HD Radio support to new handheld models, a newly-published patent application hints. Titled Digital Radio Tagging Using an RF Tuner Accessory, the document suggests that future iPods and iPhones could be used to scan through all available radio stations, or only those with better-quality digital audio. Critically, data from digital stations could used as search fodder, for instance to locate a particular song or genre.

2011 Hydundai Equus user manual to be pre-loaded on a custom iPad
We thought of the iPad as soon as we first heard the 2011 Hyundai Equus would come with its user manual preloaded on a "multimedia tablet" instead of being printed out, and it looks like our hunch was correct: our friends at Autoblog have confirmed that Hyundai will be shipping a 16GB WiFi iPad with every Equus. RED founder blasts DSLR video
The always vocal RED founder, Jim Jannard, has responded to a thread on a RED-devoted forum regarding DSLR cameras with HD recording capabilities. He opines that current consumer-level DSLRs from the likes on Nikon and Canon, will eventually bring 4K resolution video recording to their products. MobileMe web access will be MobileGone between 10 PM and midnight PDT
Filed under: MobileMeDon't be expecting to see any MobileMe web functionality tonight for 2 hours between 10 and midnight PDT. Apple says it is shutting the service down for "scheduled maintenance".
A note on the MobileMe support page states:
MobileMe members will be unable to access MobileMe applications at me.com. Access to MobileMe will still be available on desktop applications, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Normal service is expected to be restored at the end of the maintenance window.

FFmpeg 0.6 spricht jetzt VP8: da ist Apple nicht mehr weit
FFmpeg kommt jetzt in der Version 0.6 Googles VP8, der Videocodec, der sich ja zum HTML5 Standard entwickeln will. EU-Verkehrskommissar Siim Kallas hat einen Bericht (PDF) zum Einsatz von Nacktscannern auf Flughäfen vorgestellt. iPhone 4 reservations may top 2,200 at some stores
Apple's retail reservations for the iPhone 4 could be as strong as its pre-orders, some leaked data from the company may have confirmed. While trying to avoid naming specific stores, the source said a "large" New York City store (likely 5th Avenue or SoHo) had over 2,200 reservations just on Tuesday. A pair of California stores had over 1,000 and over 1,400 reservations each, while BGR observed that even a "medium" Boston store had over 800 and a small Texas store had more than 900.

iPhone 4 schon auf Juli verschoben

Scheint so als hätte Apple, die die Produktion des iPhone 4 nun wirklich extrem hochgefahren, dennoch nicht genug produziert. Laut eigenen Aussagen gab es nach einem Tag schon 600.000 Vorbestellungen und auch hierzulande ist die Lieferung jetzt schon auf ein unbestimmtes Datum im Juli verschoben. So jedenfalls die Telekom Seite. Bei der Twitter Support Hotline redet man wenigstens von Anfang Juli. Hoffnung ist also noch drin. Das neue iTunes Update wird sich aber wohl noch etwas gedulden müssen bis es was zu tun bekommt.

O2 UK reveals iPhone 4, 3GS prices
Long-time UK iPhone carrier O2 has announced its device costs for the iPhone 4 and 8GB iPhone 3GS, both due to launch in the region on June 24th. Unusually, phones are cheaper under the lowest tier when opting for an 18-month contract instead of a two-year one. A 16GB iPhone 4 is £209 with an 18-month term, for instance, while a two-year agreement raises the price to £279. This is offset by monthly fees, which are higher with a shorter contract. A 32GB model is £299 with an 18-month contract and £323 over two years.

Samsung Captivate brings fast Android to AT&T
AT&T signaled a much more serious commitment to Android today by unveiling the Captivate. It serves as a very close port of the Galaxy S and centers on its four-inch Super AMOLED display; by merging the display and touch into one layer, it's not only thinner but is much more visible outdoors than usual AMOLED screens. The screen also provides a better venue for multi-touch as well as the camera's five-megapixel photos and 720p recording.

The most striking change to anyone who's opened a previous-generation mini is the screw-off bottom. With a simple counter-clockwise twist, you've got access to the RAM bay and fan. No more putty knife. Well done, Apple!

Senators ask FCC to prioritize action on broadband white space, FCC promises nothing
Senators John Kerry (D - MA) and Olympia Snowe (R - Maine) have written a letter to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski asking them to prioritize actions on broadband white space while adhering to the scheduled Broadband Action Agenda, finishing it up by the third quarter of 2010. The national broadband plan includes 360 recommendations, with the white space action being just one of them. The letter reminded the commission that it's been about two years since it first authorized the use of white space, which would allow the use of unused television channels for wireless broadband.

Na endlich ist es soweit. Xperia entwickelt sich immer mehr zu der wiedererkennbarsten Marke von Sony Ericsson und das neue Xperia X8 bekommt jetzt auch ein erstes Hands-On im Vergleich mit dem Mini X10 und dem X10. The Droid X gets real on Verizon
Looks like Verizon and Motorola are coming clean with the Droid X a little earlier than planned -- it just appeared on the official Droid page, complete with comfirmation of that 4.3-inch screen size. Interestingly, rolling over the image reveals a box that says it has a "720p screen," which is interesting -- the Droid X prototype we played with had what looked to be the same 854 x 480 resolution as the original Droid, but we couldn't confirm it at the time. A new version of ultrasn0w has been released, allowing some iPhone 3GS owners with the iOS 4 gold master to unlock the device for use with unofficial carriers. Tablets may overtake netbooks by 2012, desktops by 2013
Apple's iPad should help push tablet sales past netbooks in as little as two years, Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps estimated today. She believes that, even with a conservative estimate of 3.5 million tablets sold this year, the category could grow to 20.4 million by 2012 and make up 18 percent of the market while netbooks would peak at 17 percent. A year later, tablets would overtake declining desktop sales, reaching 21 percent versus 20 percent.

Clear adds Mac-friendly 4G/3G modem, 4G routers
Clear today swung attention back to its 4G networking hardware with a particular focus on Macs. The Sierra Wireless-made 4G+ Mobile USB is its first dual 3G and 4G modem to support Macs and gives them an EVDO data connection fallback when 4G coverage is poor or non-existent. Das ist nicht cool. Das Droid Incredible von HTC pokert mit der Privatsphäre auf enorm experimentelle Weise. Die Sense-Oberfläche, die HTC für all seine Smartphones einsetzt, kommt mit einem Bookmark-WIdget für den Browser und eben dieses Widget macht Screenshots der Websites, die ihr ansteuert. Könnte uns ja egal sein, das problem ist allerdings, dass diese JPGs auch auf dem Telefon bleiben, nachdem man alle Daten gelöscht hat, auch nach Hardcore-Reset sind die Dateien noch da. Mac OS X 10.6.4 missing Flash 10.1, says Adobe
Apple has once again failed to put the latest version of Flash in a Snow Leopard update, Adobe's security and privacy director complains. Mac OS X 10.6.4, released on Tuesday, includes Flash Player 10.0.45.2. Eight music publishers have sued Limewire for copyright infringement. Samsung intros 512GB SSD using new toggle-mode memory
Samsung has introduced a 512GB solid state drive that is the first to use the company's high performance toggle-mode DDR NAND flash memory. Pegatron shipping CDMA iPhone 4 in the fall?
Production plans for a CDMA iPhone were reportedly firmed up on Thursday with new details. The device, which would be a straight adaptation of the iPhone 4, would start shipping to Apple in the fall from factories in Shanghai. Previous rumors have had production starting in August or September, giving Apple roughly a two-month build-up of iPhone supplies before a rumored Verizon launch in November.

It replicates the look and feel (and functionality) of those old point-and-click and even toy cameras that you might have carried around as a kid (depending on your current age of course). Eurocom X8100 Leopard: Laptop mit Porsche-PS

Eurocom dreht auf mit dem X8100 Leopard. Das ist dieses Laptop hier, das aber eher die Innereien eines High-End-Desktops hat. Knapp 5,5 Kilo wiegt dieser Panzer, der mit einem 18.4"-Display schon mal für ordentlich Eindruck sorgt. Dazu kommt ein i7-Extreme-Prozessor, eine High-Edn-Grafikkarte eurer Wahl (z.B. What, our ultra-special Droid dock's not enough for you? There's now another way to avoid buying Motorola's official accessories, though this one's a bit more blasphemous. Thijs Bosschert over in the Netherlands has put together a fully fledged adapter for his Milestone (aka Droid European Edition), which allows it to interface with docks designed for iPods and iPhones. Nokia senkt Quartalsprognose
Nokia hat seine Prognose für das laufende zweite Quartal und für das Gesamtjahr 2010 nach unten korrigiert. Der Quartalsumsatz der Sparte Devices and Services soll nun leicht unter oder am unteren Ende der im April vorausgesagten Spanne von 6,7 bis 7,2 Milliarden Euro liegen. Fujitsu und Toshiba: Zusammenlegung der Mobilfunksparten bestätigt

Toshiba entwickelt 128 GB NAND-Flash-Module
Toshiba hat heute neue NAND-Flash-Module vorgestellt, die auch 16 gestapelten NAND-Flash-Chips und einem zugehörigen Controller bestehen. Die in 32 Nanometer gefertigten Chip-Modul erreichen damit bei einer Layer-Dichte von 64 Gbit eine Gesamtkapazität von 128 GB. Das Gyroskop des neuen iPhone 4
Obwohl schon vor der offiziellen Vorstellung des iPhone 4 zumindest ein Gerät im Umlauf war, wurden einige Neuerungen erst zur WWDC bekannt. Win: MobileMe-Systemerweiterung 1.6
Im Zusammenhang mit der heute veröffentlichten iTunes-Version 9.2 wurde auch die Systemsteuerung für Windows aktualisiert. Die neue Version 1.6 sollte eigentlich zusammen mit dem iTunes-Update installiert werden, lässt sich hier aber auch manuell herunterladen und installieren. (Danke Gambit)

Bericht: AOL steht kurz vor Verkauf von Bebo
Wie das Wall Street Journal berichtet, hat AOL einen Verkäufer für sein Soziales Netzwerk Bebo gefunden. Eine Vereinbarung steht angeblich kurz vor dem Abschluss. Die Kollegen von iFixIt haben getan, was sie am besten können und sich sogleich nach Verkaufsstart des neuen Winz-Macs einen Schraubenzieher geschnappt und das ganze Gerät auseinandergebaut. Überraschungen gab es dabei leider keine, das Gerät enthält genau die beworbenen Bestandteile, nicht mehr oder weniger. Wer in Zukunft jedoch gedenkt, seinen Mac mini selbst zu reparieren, darf sich schon mal auf das ein oder andere Ausrufezeichen im Tutorial freuen.

Der neue Mac mini komplett zerlegt
Der neue Mac mini ist schmaler geworden, wobei die Grundfläche etwas grösser ist, gegenüber dem Vorgängermodell. Sehr schön ist es, nun ohne Werkzeug den Arbeitsspeicher selber zu wechseln.
Wenn man aber das mit der Festplatte machen will, sollte man viel Geduld und ein sehr ruhiges Händchen besitzen.

Er ist erst ein paar Tage zu haben, der kleinste Mac von Apple. Und schon haben sich die Kollegen von ifixit daran gemacht und den neuen Mac mini in seine Einzelteile zerlegt.
Den Arbeitsspeicher zu wechseln ist deutlich verbessert worden, da braucht man nicht mal mehr den bekannten „Spachtel“ um die Keksdose zu öffnen. Aber was ist mit der Festplatte? Kann man diese selber wechseln, wenn ja wie?
Schaut euch einfach das Video von ifixit an, dann seht ihr selbst, so einfach geht es nicht, aber machbar ist es trotzdem. Weiter Bilder vom Zerlegen des kleinsten Mac gibt es bei ifixit.

Flashversion in 10.6.4 beinhaltet Sicherheitslücke
Mit dem 10.6.4 Update von Mac OS X wurde ein neuer Flashplayer mitgeliefert. Die von Apple ausgelieferte Version ist jedoch nicht die neuste Version und beinhaltet eine schon geschlossene Sicherheitslücke. Das berichtet Adobe im firmeneigenen Blog. Nutzer von Mac OS X 10.6.4 werden angehalten zu überprüfen welche Version auf Ihrem System installiert ist und gegebenenfalls die neuere Version 10.1.53.64 zu installieren. Welche Version vom Flashplayer installiert ist lässt sich über ein eingebundenes Flashelement zum Beispiel dieser hier herausfinden.

Samsung's high-speed 512GB SSD to begin volume production next month
Does jargon like "Toggle-mode DDR NAND" mean anything to you? No, but a maximum sequential read speed of 250MBps and 220MBps sequential write speed scampering past a SATA 3.0Gbps interface should. Samsung claims that its new SSD is just as power efficient as its 40nm-class SSDs thanks to 30nm-class 32Gb chips and a low-power controller designed specifically for the toggle-mode DDR. Encryption? Wartungsarbeiten auf MobileMe
Für MobileMe sind heute "planmäßige Wartungsarbeiten" angekündigt. Gut möglich, dass Apple sich auch hier auf die Veröffentlichung von iOS 4 vorbereitet. Aktuell gibt es wohl noch verschiedene Probleme im Zusammenspiel mit der kommenden iOS-Version 4, so funktioniert Apples Ortungsdienst "Find my iPhone" bislang noch nicht mit den veröffentlichten Beta-Versionen. iTunes 9.2 bringt iOS 4-Support und Verbesserungen
In Vorbereitung auf den Verkaufsstart der vierten iPhone-Generation hat Apple iTunes 9.2 für Mac und Windows veröffentlicht. Die neue Programmversion unterstützt die Synchronisierung von Geräten mit iOS 4, zudem lassen sich nun auch PDF-Dateien im Bereich "Bücher" verwalten und mit der in Kürze erwarteten iBooks-Version 1.1 für iPad, iPod touch und iPhone synchronisieren.
Das Upate bringt darüber hinaus folgende Veränderungen und Verbesserungen:
Probleme bei der Darstellung von Covergrafiken sollten der Vergangenheit angehören. Die Bilder werden jetzt deutlich schneller angezeigt.
In der Gitteransicht bei der verschiedenen Medientypen werden jetzt grundsätzlich in der Kopfleiste zusätzliche Sortieroptionen eingeblendet (Apps z.B. auch nach Genres, Musik nach Alben, Interpreten usw. oder Bücher nach Autoren und Kategorien. Sony PlayStation Move hands on at E3: these lollypops don't lie
Sony's PlayStation Move was hardly the surprise of the show, after all we've been seeing it waved around in various forms for years. A customary teardown of the new Mac mini has revealed how relatively easy it is to get at the components compared to earlier models. PlayStation 3 in 3D impressions: almost, but not quite

iTunes 9.2 Update ab sofort !
Ab sofort steht iTunes in der 9.2 Version zum Download für die breite Masse bereit. Zu beziehen ist das 122 MB große Update über die Apple Seite oder mittels Softwareaktualisierung.

Apple admits mistake over pulling of graphic novel
Filed under: App StoreApple has reversed a ban on the app version of Robert Berry's comic book edition of James Joyce's "Ulysses," which has nudity. Apple has also lifted a ban on a graphic that shows 2 men kissing in Tom Bouden's graphic novel of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."
The Associated Press quotes Trudy Miller of Apple saying the developers had been "allowed to resubmit their original drawings" and use the original artwork.

AT&T canceling some completed iPhone 4 pre-orders
AT&T's repeated ordering problems with the iPhone 4 may have led AT&T to start canceling some pre-orders that were already approved, early anecdotes said. Customers have received notices that orders placed on Tuesday were canceled today. Despite mixups with identity on the initial day, the identified subscribers appear to be correct and were left with no choice but to wait at a retail store.

Flock drops Firefox engine for Chromium
The Mozilla Firefox-based Flock browser is now available in a Flock 3 beta build that drops Firefox roots in favor of Google's Chromium and its WebKit engine. As one would expect, the new browser is much different from the original. While the latest Flock browser is currently only available for Windows, a Mac beta is due in July.

Logitech's 'companion box' gets a name: Revue with Google TV
Sure we've already had our eyes all over Logitech's CE4100-powered Google TV box and given its WiFi controls on iPhone and Nexus One a try, but we didn't know exactly what to look for (or, according to Steve, what we'd probably be avoiding) when it hit stores. Yes, it looks like the PlayStation Move accessories are starting to trickle in. While we're still lusting after the shooting attachment, we do realize the need for more modest hardware such as that supplied by Nyko.
