Benutzerhandbuch zu iOS 4 verfügbar
Umfangreich und kostenlos: Ab sofort steht auf den Apple-Seiten das offizielle Handbuch zu iOS 4 zum Download (17 MB) bereit. Das 244-seitige PDF-Dokument erläutert in 28 Kapiteln alle wichtigen Funktionen des neuen Betriebssystems. Die allgemeine Features werden anhand des iPhone 4 erklärt, aber es gibt auch spezielle Abschnitte für iPhone 3GS and 3G. Mit zahreichen Tipps und detaillierten Infos ist das Handbuch auch für erfahrene Anwender als „Nachschlagewerk“ empfehlenswert. Allerdings ist es vorerst nur in englischer Sprache erhältlich. Eine deutsche Version folgt demnächst.

Pointgrab's motion sensing tech coming to more laptops, we go hands-off
Yeah, so we haven't been the biggest proponents of motion sensing laptops -- it's sort of hard to see the point when you've usually got your hands on the keyboard or touchpad to control the screen -- but apparently Pointgrab's software is gaining some traction. The software, which works with any 2D webcam, is currently being shipped on Fujitsu Lifebook AH laptops in Japan, but it'll be expanding to other markets soon. In addition, we were told another laptop maker would be preloading it "before the end of the year." Interesting. iPhone 101: What you need to know about FaceTime
Filed under: iPhone 101FaceTime for the iPhone 4 is a lot of fun. It's the simplest implementation of video conferencing I've seen, because it is basically a no-configuration feature.
Here's some tips to would-be FaceTimers:
First, make sure FaceTime is enabled. Tap 'settings' on your new iPhone, scroll down to the green icon called 'Phone' and select it. The second item down is labeled FaceTime. Make sure it is turned on. It may take a moment for FaceTime to become active so make sure you get a confirmation.
Now when you call someone you'll see an on-screen FaceTime icon. You can tap it, and the other person, assuming they are

Nokia N9 (or something) in the wild: 8 megapixel camera, American 3G?
We told you, didn't we? Whether you want to call this the N98, the N900's successor, or the N8 plus QWERTY, what you're looking at above is potentially the visage of Nokia's next smartphone. iPhone 4 beats Droid X, Evo 4G in camera phone showdown
The iPhone 4's camera is not only better than those of its Android rivals but even some newer still cameras, testing today has discovered. It has just a five-megapixel sensor versus eight or more from the Droid X and Evo 4G, but its color accuracy and exposure were determined as better than all but those in dedicated cameras. Virgin Mobile's pre-paid MIFI spotted, purchased, unboxed, and photographed
Sure, Virgin Mobile's MIFI isn't due out until Monday -- but that hasn't stopped one lucky shopper from finding one on the shelves of his local Best Buy yesterday. The enigmatic reader (only identified by the initials "NS") even went so far as to include some unboxing pictures for our (and your) pleasure. Between this, and Sprint's recent Beyond Talk announcement, it looks like 2010 is shaping up to be a good year for pre-paid wireless.

Changes in iTunes policy draws scrutiny from US government
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is being called upon by the US government to answer nine questions regarding its new iTunes location data policy. The co-chairs of the House Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus, Representatives Edward Markey and Joe Barton, are reported to have sent a letter to Jobs yesterday, expressing concern that the policy might break Section 222 of the Federal Communications Act, preventing companies from sharing location data without someone's permission. Apple has released the iPhone user guide for iOS 4 software. It's a 17MB, 244 page PDF designed to walk you through everything from syncing to using the default apps. The 28 chapters cover the Phone, Mail, Safari, iPod, Messages (SMS/MMS), Calendar, Photos, Camera, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Voice Memos, Notes, Clock, Calculator, Settings, the iTunes Store, Compass, Contacts, Nike + iPod, iBooks, and Accessibility whew.
The book includes tips specific to the iPhone 4, but it also includes tips for the 3GS and 3G. When a section of the manual is only applicable to a certain device, it is noted at the beginning

Verizon meeting shows rebrand, no short-term iPhone plans
Details escaping about Verizon's mystery meetings have revealed both a major new marketing spin and its lack of short-term plans for the iPhone. It should drop its longstanding "can you hear me now?" slogan in favor of "rule the air" and will shorten the company's name to Verizon from its usual Verizon Wireless. Disappointed to find out that your brand new iPhone 4 won't work with the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone you paid $100 for? Well, it looks like there's a surprisingly simple fix: velcro. Blu-ray group approves 128GB BDXL format
The Blu-ray Disc Association on Friday finalized its proposed BDXL format for Blu-ray discs. The advance will allow up to 128GB of storage space on write-once and rewritable discs. iPhone 4 display test shows 'pixel-less' claims are accurate
Retinal neuroscientist Bryan Jones late Thursday posted a direct study of the iPhone 4's screen that rebuffs concerns of Apple exaggerating claims about its 'pixel-free' Retina Display. He acknowledged that DisplayMate's Raymond Soneira was right about the resolution of the human retina's photoreceptors but observed that it didn't reflect the entire performance of the eye. The optics beyond the retina roughly halve the actual resolution the eye can perceive and mean the eye can see considerably less detail than thought.

Sprint Android 2.2 plans trigger outrage, highlight OS woes
Sprint today triggered controversy in confirming that it would have Android 2.2 on its network in the "near future." Details weren't given of which phones would have it, but it validated Adobe's slip that the Evo 4G would be one of those phones. A spokesperson for Sprint explicitly warned, however, that neither the HTC Hero nor the Samsung Moment would get the OS revamp.

AllGo: Embedded Android bringt Tablets auf 35 Dollar

Klingt zu schön um wahr zu sein, ein Tablet für 15 Dollar, aber ganz so stimmt die Behauptung über AllGo auch nicht. Mit WiFi und Prozessor ist nämlich noch nicht wirklich ein Computer da. Da fehlt noch mindestens der Bildschirm und der ist in der AllGo Rechnung nicht drin. Upgrades form 77 percent of launch-day US iPhone 4 sales
Upgraders formed an overwhelming bulk of the people buying the iPhone 4 on Thursday, claims Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Of 608 people surveyed by Piper at Apple Stores in San Francisco, Minneapolis and New York, 77 percent said they were upgrading from an earlier model. RIM could ship 70 million BlackBerries in 12 months
RIM is expecting a sharp increase in the number of phones it will ship in the year ahead, industry insiders said on Friday. Part suppliers in Taiwan have reportedly been told to expect between 60 million to 70 million BlackBerries to ship in the next 12 months. It looks like EVO 4G users will soon have one more thing to smile about, as Sprint has just announced that an Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) upgrade will indeed be coming to the "superphone."
With the Android 2.2 upgrade, customers can expect improvements to include the following benefits: updates to user interface, improved EAS Support, improved browser performance, including Flash 10x Support, voice dialing over Bluetooth and application storage on external memory.

Apple, AT&T sued over iPad data plan change
Filed under: iPadWhen the iPad was first announced, Steve Jobs seemed very proud of the data plans his company had negotiated for the 3G model. The top-of-the-line plan featured unlimited data for for US$30 per month. A few weeks later, on June 2nd, that plan was replaced with 2GB of data for $25 per month.
Customers were not happy.
Today, a class action lawsuit has been filed against Apple and AT&T, claiming fraud and misrepresentation. Looks like the Blu-ray Disc Association has published the final specs for the monster BDXL disc, opening the way for manufacturers to start introducing the technology in their optical drives. Radio Shack promises more iPhone 4s by weekend
People hoping to get an iPhone 4 in the near future may be able to get one from Radio Shack as soon as this weekend. Oracle meldet Gewinnplus von 25 Prozent im vierten Fiskalquartal
Oracle hat seinen Nettogewinn im vierten Fiskalquartal 2010 (bis 31. Mai) um 25 Prozent auf 2,36 Milliarden Dollar (1,92 Milliarden Euro) oder 0,46 Dollar je Aktie erhöht. Now that device is being delayed again, and while the company has wizened up and not actually given a new estimated date this time, it also took the unfortunate and ominous move of canceling all pre-orders. Google Chrome now enabling Flash by default
Google late Thursday released a new update to the official version of Chrome that has Adobe's Flash turned on by default. Previously only available in test releases, the install gives no choice but to have Flash and integrates updates to the plugin through Chrome's own updating system. The design should mitigate crashes and stability, however, as it sandboxes the plugin to prevent failures from compromising a tab or the whole browser.

The release of Chrome OS looms ever closer, but still there are a number of enhancements and changes being rolled in that should make for a somewhat nicer experience, and TechCrunch has highlighted a few. iPhone 4's first-day sales may top 1.5 million
An early estimate by Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner suggests Apple may have sold as many as 1.5 million iPhone 4s on just its first day of sales. Intel stellt fest: Grafikchip rechnet schneller als Prozessor

When Windows Phone 7 ships it will let companies push ads even outside of apps, the company said during a presentation at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. T-Mobile kann jeder, die simlockfreien iPhone 4-Geräte werden jedoch noch eine Weile auf sich warten lassen. Den Betrieb mit handgeschnittenen SIM-Karten anderer Mobilfunkprovider können wir seit heute mit dem Macnotes-Testexemplar eines nicht gelockten iPhone 4 ausprobieren. In Kontingenten dürften simlock-freie iPhone 4-Geräte leider erst gegen Ende Juli in Deutschland verfügbar sein.

It's early days yet, but NPD claims that revenue from US sales of 3D TVs and standalone 3D-capable Blu-ray players has exceeded $55 million in the first three months of availability. Mind you, this steady growth comes despite the absence of some major players. Probleme beim iPhone 4 nur teilweise gelöst
Das neue iPhone 4 ist erst seit gestern offiziell auf dem Markt und schon tauchen die ersten Problemfälle auf. Als erstes wurden „gelbliche Flecken“ auf dem Display entdeckt. Kurze Zeit später wurden Empfangsprobleme gemeldet. Diese sollen teilweise sogar zu Verbindungsabbrüchen während eines Telefonates geführt haben.
Nun gibt es aber eine Entwarnung, die wenigstens die Verfärbungen des Display erklären. Laut den letzten Informationen liegt es an dem Kleber der dafür sorgt, dass das Glas auf der Vorderseite befestigt ist. Die „gelblichen Flecken“ sind noch nicht vollständig getrocknete Reste von dem verwendeten Kleber. Diese „Flecken“ sollen in den nächsten Tagen verschwinden.
Zum Thema Empfangsprobleme beim neuen iPhone 4 gibt es derzeit noch keine wirkliche Lösung. Je nach dem wie man das Gerät

RIM hat Quartalszahlen vorgelegt und mit 11,2 Millionen verkauften BlackBerrys kann man nicht meckern. Das beste: insgesamt sind es jetzt 100 Millionen. Apples Antwort auf das Problem mit der Antenne
Unter den ersten iPhone 4-Kunden macht sich Unmut breit. Auch wenn wir das Problem mit einem Verbindungsverlust durch ein Festhalten des iPhones in der Redaktion nicht nachvollziehen können, so scheint eine bestimmte Positionierung der Hand am Gerät für Empfangsverlust zu sorgen. Wir sind überrascht, wir sind verblüfft, wir sind erstaunt. Aus mehreren Gründen. Gestern hatten wir erwähnt, dass man das iPhone 4 am besten nicht in der unteren linken Ecke festhalten sollte, weil sonst der Empfang langsam gen Null geht. Das kann nur ein Fehler sein oder? Sure, Pandigital's Novel may be delayed until next month because of some firmware issues -- and we haven't heard the most positive things about the 7-inch LCD based e-reader / tablet -- but we had to check it out for ourselves. At $149, the all-plastic reader isn't going to win any build quality awards (it's also rather heavy for what it is), but the Android 2.1-powered gadget does have a pretty attractive user interface. Hulu Plus to trial in just a few days with iPad support?
More Hulu news has surfaced this evening as a leak now suggests the paid Hulu Plus service will start running in a matter of days. Anonymous contacts said a trial version of the subscription TV streaming is due to go live before the end of June. Bloomberg: Hulu coming to PlayStation network 'soon'
It was just two weeks ago in the runup to E3 that Reuters spread rumors of Hulu coming to the Xbox 360 and the iPad as some sort of paid service, and now Bloomberg is adding to the chatter, saying that everyone's favorite video service is also in talks to become part of Sony's Playstation Network and appear on the PS3 "soon." As with the previous rumors, Hulu on PS3 is said to be a paid service, but nothing's actually confirmed yet. So is Hulu playing Microsoft, Sony and Apple against each other in a bid to collect the biggest exclusivity fee possible, or are we about to see an aggressive Netflix-style multiplatform rollout?

Apple defends iPhone 4 amid poor reception claims
Apple has released a statement defending the iPhone 4 against claims of poor reception if the phone is held a certain way. The company suggests that gripping any phone, including the new iPhone, will "result in some attenuation" of antenna performance. The effect is said to be more pronounced in certain places, depending on the positioning of the antennas.

Zune Marketplace finally allows direct purchases
Microsoft as part of its Bing refresh has started allowing direct credit card purchases for music at the Zune Marketplace. Apple responds over iPhone 4 reception issues: you're holding the phone the wrong way
So, we just spoke with Apple and got the straight dirt on the reception issues that have been plaguing users today and it's a little surprising. In essence, Apple cops to the fact there are reception issues with the new iPhone -- namely, that if you cover the bottom-left corner of the phone and bridge the gap between the notch there with your naked flesh, you could see some signal degradation. Yes, you read that right: it's not a software or production issue, simply a matter of the physical location of your hand in regards to the phone's antenna. The company's suggested fix? First day thoughts on iPhone 4
Filed under: iPhoneThe day has finally come. After 2 1/2 hours in the reserved line, I was able to walk out with the phone up and running, albeit without contacts, music, videos or my app collection.
Getting it home and synced was uneventful. iTunes detected the new phone and dutifully restored everything. A couple of reminders, however: First, some passwords won't survive the sync. FaceTime is a tiny bit awkward, but a whole lot of fun

I wound up taking two FaceTime calls today, but a third failed. First up was our old friend Nik Fletcher from way across the ocean in the UK. I was shocked at the excellent quality of the call and the video. It was definitely nicer than a standard webcam. To be clear, I'm not a huge fan of this concept. By that I mean that I still see social hurdles to this technology being widely adapted. If you've ever made faces while talking to someone on the phone, you'll know what I mean. Plus, having to hold the phone out in the air was a little tiring, but I'm sure the accessory market will create scads of "solutions" to this problem.

Counter-Strike Source out for Mac

Just in case you missed it yesterday, Counter-Strike is now available wait for it for the Mac. Yes, possibly the most premiere PC game of all time is now playable (specifically the Source version) natively on the Mac, thanks to Valve's own Steam distribution service. And it's another Steam Play title, which means that if you own it on the PC (which you probably do if you've ever played FPS games in your life), you can download and play it right now on the Mac as well. You can even play cross-platform, so your buddies on the PC can finally let you into their clan -- assuming you're leet enough.

TUAW tested: iPhone 4 works with original iPhone dock

Being fanatical OCD maniacs moderately well organized, one and all, we headed off to our carefully labeled "outdated iPhone parts" box and pulled out some spare docks for units that are no longer serviceble.
Just as promised, the iPhone 4 fit perfectly into the dock, and even now my new unit is continuing its initial sync (yes, I do have a lot of data to transfer) in a happily near-vertical position.

Briefly: eBay acquires RedLaser, Readdle Calendars app
eBay has announced the acquisition of RedLaser, the barcode scanning app for the iPhone. The company plans to integrate the technology into its own apps, including eBay Marketplace, eBay Selling, StubHub and Shopping.com. Users will be able to quickly create eBay listings by accessing pricing trends and product details for items in the company's catalog.
