iPhone 4s suffering from buggy proximity sensors
A number of iPhone 4 owners are experiencing problems with the device's proximity sensor, Apple's support forums reveal. The sensor is extremely important on an iPhone, since it shuts off the touchscreen when a person brings the phone to their ear. Without the feature a person can accidentally hit onscreen buttons, carrying the risk of muting or hanging up on a call.

Amazon's Kindle app adds video, audio support

Unlocked HTC Hero gets Android 2.1 update -- no, for real this time
False starts aside, that promised late June Android 2.1 upgrade for the GSM version of the HTC Hero is finally here -- for unlocked models, anyhow. It seems that users are being greeted with an update clocking in at nearly 80MB, and despite HTC's own warning to the contrary, apps aren't being wiped, so you should be able to undertake the endeavor pretty safely. Orange and T-Mobile versions of the phone apparently haven't yet begun to see the rollout, but the wait shouldn't be terribly long now -- meanwhile, let us know how your

Verizon cuts Kin prices just six weeks after launch
As hinted at this weekend, Verizon has cut the prices of the Kin One and Two roughly in half. The Kin Two has fallen from $100 to $50 on a contract, and the Kin Two now costs $30. Verizon hasn't made any mention of an expiration date and implies the prices are permanent.

iPad 101: Conserving your 3G data use
Filed under: iPadSince I brought home my 3G + Wi-Fi iPad a little over a week ago, I've been running in Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi enabled to avoid using cellular data. Otherwise I kept getting a prompt (shown here) asking me if I wanted to setup an account, which I didn't want to do.
Fortunately, there is another way. Go into the Settings application and tap on "Cellular Data." This brings up an on/off switch for Cellular Data and Data Roaming. Turn both "off" and you will not be prompted to sign up for a data plan when Wi-Fi is unavailable.
Airplane mode disables not only the cellular data, but also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the GPS. If

Nokia mocks iPhone 4's "death grip" issue
Nokia started the week with a jab at claims of Apple's iPhone 4 antenna problems. Poking fun at Steve Jobs' assertions that people suffering the problem were just holding the phone the wrong way, Nokia suggested that customers could hold their phones any way they like and showed four examples. Google Docs viewer reaches Android, iOS devices
Google on Monday said that Google Docs viewer has now gone mobile, catering to Android-powered devices as well as the iPhone and iPad. Users will be able to view PDF, PPT, DOC and DOCX files uploaded to their documents list without having to download them first. The functionality brings with it the ability to switch pages and pan or zoom on a page, with pinch-to-zoom supported on the Apple devices.

Jobs says Apple products not tainted by 'conflict' minerals
The iPhone 4 should be free of so-called conflict minerals, says Apple CEO Steve Jobs. In a recent article, the New York Times profiled the situation in the eastern Congo, where warlords may fund extremely violent campaigns by selling minerals to suppliers who build phones, cameras, computers and game systems. The situation echoes that of blood diamonds, which are coming under better though not complete control because of laws and certification.

HTC Wildfire review
If phones could make babies, then this HTC Wildfire would indubitably be the love child of the Desire and Nexus One. But of course, the humdrum reality is that 'tis just an Android 2.1 replacement for the entry-level Tattoo -- same 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7225 processor, 3.2-inch 320 x 240 capacitive LCD touchscreen instead of 2.8-inch resistive, 384MB RAM instead of 256MB, and a 5-megapixel camera instead of 3.2 (although quality matters more, obviously). FaceTime: Freischaltung per SMS nach Grossbritannien
Handynummer ist Account-ID: Beim Aktivieren der FaceTime genannten Videochat-Funktion des iPhone 4 wird einem Bericht von teletarif.de zufolge eine SMS an eine britische Telefonnummer gesendet. Daraufhin wird anscheinend eine weitere Nachricht von einem in Grossbritannien stehenden Server an das iPhone gesendet, welche nur kryptische Zeichen enthält, aber offenbar die Erstverbindung zum Videochat-Server herstellt. Built for iPhone, this application offers standard matching game strategy (think "Bejeweled" or "Tetris") mixed with a bit of Poker savvy. With Poker Smash, you can eliminate cards by matching 3 of a kind, but you can also go for straights, flushes, full houses, and so forth. Reports: Issues with iPhone 4 and car stereos
Filed under: iPhoneWe've received several tips over the weekend from iOS 4 users who are having trouble connecting to their car stereos. A search of Apple's discussion boards revealed that they're not alone.
Here's what's going on: A number of stereo units from Pioneer, JVC and others are giving a "device incompatible" message when connected to an iPhone running iOS 4. Note that the 3G and 3GS phones in question worked fine with these stereos when they were on iOS 3.1.3. Of course, the iPhone 4 only runs iOS 4, but since the older phones are also affected it seems likely that this is a software issue, not a hardware one.

Chrome web use outruns Safari in the US
Use of Chrome has overtaken Safari for the first time in the US, new data from StatCounter revealed today. As of last week, Google's browser now has 8.97 percent of web traffic, just edging out Apple's 8.88 percent. Internet Explorer and Firefox were both flat at 52 and 28.45 percent each.

DIY white iPhone 4 has a few rough edges

Droid 2 rumored to be launching August 23rd with Android 2.2
We've certainly gotten a peak at quite a few Droid 2 details so far, but word of a release date has unfortunately never been among them. That now looks to have changed, however, with the folks at Android and Me reporting that a "trustworthy source" has informed them that the phone will be launching on August 23rd. According to the site, that date was apparently chosen so the Droid 2 would be the first phone to ship with Android 2.2 out of the box, although that of course remains to be confirmed (current test versions of the Droid 2 are said to be running Android 2.1). Germany calls on Apple to expose location data policy
Apple should immediately disclose the details of the location data it is collecting from handhelds, says Germany's federal justice minister, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger. The terms of the iTunes Store were recently amended to grant Apple and its partners the right to track the "real-time geographic location" of devices, specifically to "provide and improve location-based products and services." White House throws its weight behind wireless broadband, wants 500MHz of spectrum reallocated
Ask, and ye shall receive, FCC: hot off Julius Genachowski's National Broadband Plan asking for 500MHz of additional spectrum to keep up with anticipated demand over the coming years, the White House appears to be totally on board with an Obama-penned memorandum out today demanding that federal agencies under his control get on board, while also "strongly encouraging" independent agencies to do the same. SEC filing shows BlackBerry losing sales in most areas
RIM is watching its BlackBerry sales slip in every country except the US, the company acknowledged in an SEC filing published Friday. Despite selling a record 11.2 million BlackBerries in its last quarter, its sales revenue outside of the US fell 1.4 percent overall. Its performance in the US was mostly propped up by the launch of the Bold 9650 and Buy One Get One deals like those at Verizon that guaranteed two units sold for the price of one.

Apple to open second Paris store on Saturday
Apple will finally open its second retail store in Paris, France on July 3rd, the company has announced. The Opéra outlet is based at 12 Rue Halévy, and so named because of its proximity to the Garnier operahouse. The location has been under construction for well over a year, due to the need to preserve and restore historic architecture, such as wooden doors, arched windows and wrought-iron balcony railings on the exterior.

Microsoft says Kin software update is scheduled for mid-summer
We'd already heard some talk that Microsoft's Kin One and Kin Two phones might be in store for an update, and it looks like the phones will indeed be getting one sooner rather than later. Apple: In 3 Tagen 1,7 Millionen iPhone 4 verkauft
Drei Tage ist das iPhone 4 erst im Handel und wurde schon 1,7-Millionen mal verkauft. „Das ist die erfolgreicheste Produkteinführung in der Geschichte Apples“ liess Steve Jobs heute in einer Pressemeldung verkünden. „Dennoch möchten wir uns bei jenen Kunden entschuldigen, die abgewiesen wurden, weil wir nicht genügend hatten,“ so Jobs weiter. Vom iPhone 3GS wurden am Startwochenende im vergangenen Jahr „nur“ gut 1 Millionen Stück verkauft - allerdings in 8 Ländern. Das iPhone 4 ist bisher nur in den USA, in Deutschland, Frankreich, Grossbritannien und Japan erhältlich. Den meisten iPod- oder iPhone-Nutzern genügt vermutich eines der in zahlreichen Variationen angebotenen Akkupacks. Wer jedoch einen längeren Aufenthalt abseits jeglicher Steckdosen plant, muss auf alternative Energiequellen zurückgreifen. The 1.7 million iPhone 4s sold over the weekend can be attributed in part to FaceTime, claims UBS' Maynard Um. Developers to get native x86 version of Android 2.2 this summer?
We knew that Intel had designs on Android for its Moorestown CPU, and as you might have guessed, the company's plans don't stop there. Renee James, a Senior VP at Intel, recently said as much in a conversation with APC. Apparently, devs can look forward to seeing a fully native x86 version of Froyo at some point this summer. James goes on to say that "all of the code will be fed back into the open branch that will be created for x86." Awesome! Perhaps 2011 will see a flood of generic, Atom-powered Android tablets. Because we don't see enough generic Android tablets as it is.

HTC EVO 4G gets an OTA software update
We don't know exactly what's included, but Sprint's sending out that rumored over-the-air Android software update to HTC EVO 4G devices this morning. It's labeled as version 1.47.651.1, and it's just 21.43MB, so we're guessing it's just mostly bug fixes, but word on the street was that it would "enhance" WiFi, so there's a chance it could enable the EVO's 802.11n support, and we're also hoping for some improved battery life. We'll update you once we see some release notes, but in the meantime let us know how it goes, yeah?

AT&T claims New York City 3G upgrades complete
AT&T today claimed that its New York City 3G network upgrades were complete. In addition to its capacity boost from earlier in the year, it now has the wider 850MHz band and 7.2Mbps HSPA at all of its cell sites in the five boroughs. Voice call quality should have improved by about 47 percent, AT&T said.

Researchers create functioning human lung on a microchip
Researchers at Harvard University have successfully created a functioning, respirating human 'lung' on a chip in a lab. Made using human and blood vessel cells and a microchip, the translucent lung is far simpler in terms of observation than traditional, actual human lungs (for obvious reasons), in a small convenient package about the size of a pencil eraser. The researchers have demonstrated its effectiveness and are now moving toward showing its ability to replicate gas exchange between lung cells and the bloodstream. Most Apple Stores, nearly all partners sell out of iPhone 4
It may now be difficult or impossible to find an iPhone 4 in much of the US and Europe, suggests Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore. The firm spoke with over 100 retail outlets over the weekend, and Whitmore notes that 60 percent of Apple Stores were sold out by the end of Thursday, while all other contacted retailers were empty. These included Best Buy in the US, Orange in France and O2 and Carphone Warehouse in the UK.

The iPhone 4 is Apple's most expensive ever phone to make short of the original phone itself, a price breakdown by iSuppli has found. A 16GB example costs about $187.51 in raw parts; the bill is less than the $223 of the 2007 original but more than the $173 iPhone 3G and the $178.96 iPhone 3GS. We've been hearing wind of a new mobile broadband service coming next month from Best Buy for a few days now, and it looks like the company went ahead and spilled the beans in its own Sunday flyer. The service offers a variety of tiers ranging from a contract-free 250MB per month for $30 all the way up to 5GB monthly on a 24 month contract for $60 a month. FaceTime: Aktivierung per SMS nach Großbritannien, Mobilnummer als Account-ID
Wie bereits in einem Nachtrag zum FaceTime-Erfahrungsbericht angemerkt, erfordert die Aktivierung der Videochatfähigkeit die Möglichkeit zum Senden oder Empfangen von SMS-Nachrichten. Bei Nutzung einer MultiSIM oder UltraCard im iPhone 4, die nicht für den Versand und Empfang von SMS-Mitteilungen aktiviert worden ist, bleibt dementsprechend die Inbetriebnahme von FaceTime unmöglich. Australischer Webfilter soll auch unter neuer Premierministerin kommen

Bildbeweis: Es war doch kein Tor!
Was war das doch gestern für ein Tag. Erst fährt Sebastian Vettel beim Formel 1 Rennen in Valencia seinen 2. Sieg in dieser Saison ein und dann kam auch noch das WM-Fussballspiel Deutschland gegen England.
Der grösste Aufreger des Tages war wohl die Schiedsrichterentscheidung in der 38. Minute. Nach einem eindeutigen Treffer der englischen Mannschaft wurde dieser nicht anerkannt. Das war natürlich eine eindeutige Fehlentscheidung!
Oder doch nicht?

Hightech Final Protection iPhone 4 Schutzfolien von arktis.de
Als ich vor kurzem mein iPhone 4 mit einer Schutzfolie bekleben wollte, musste ich feststellen, das ich ältere Schutzfolien wie z. B. die vom iPhone 3G nicht mehr verwenden kann. Es würde zwar funktionieren, allerdings deckt man dann ein Teil vom “Home-Button” oder ein Teil vom Lautsprecher ab.

Rückläufige Nachfrage nach MP3-Playern
Wie der Branchenverband BITKOM meldet, ist die Nachfrage nach MP3-Playern in Deutschland rückläufig. Der Höhepunkt der Nachfrage liegt bereits einige Jahre zurück. Es konnte nicht allzu lange dauern, bis ein Filmteam auf die Idee kam: Eine Gruppe um den Film-Profi Michael Koerbel hat sich die Aufgabe gestellt, einen Kurzfilm komplett mit dem iPhone 4 zu drehen und auch ausschließlich mit der iMovie-App zu bearbeiten. Charles Davies might not be as immediately recognizable as some other industry veterans, but anyone that's been following this business since the early days of PDAs will no doubt be familiar with his work. Davies was Psion's very first employee way back in 1981, and stuck with the company all the way up until 2003 when he left to join Symbian, before moving on to Nokia with the rest of the Symbian staff a few years later. Nachdem Apples E-Book-Reader iBooks nun neben dem iPad auch für den iPod touch und das iPhone verfügbar ist, erreichen uns vermehrt E-Mails mit Fragen und Tipps rund um die Erstellung von Dateien im offenen E-Book-Format EPUB.
Die schlechte Nachricht vorneweg: Es derzeit kein verlässliches Werkzeug für die automatisierte Erstellung von E-Books, die neben Text auch Bilder enthalten: in Punkto Layout versagen nach unseren bisherigen Erfahrungen alle kostenlosen Tools komplett, selbst der EPUB-Export aus Adobes Layout-Programm Indesign erledigt diese Aufgabe mehr schlecht als recht. Bei reinen Textdokumenten leisten die unten genannten Werkzeuge jedoch allesamt gute Dienste.
Für diejenigen von euch, die sich eingehender mit dem Thema beschäftigen wollen, haben wir hier ein paar Links zusammengestellt. Über eure persönlichen Erfahrungen sowie Ergänzungen zu diesem Thema in den Kommentaren freuen wir uns.

Jobs: iPhone 4 demand won't delay Canadian sales
Steve Jobs was active in e-mail again this weekend as he assuaged fears that the Canadian iPhone 4 launch would be delayed. Having been asked if extremely high sales would set back the launch a month as it did the iPad, the Apple executive simply answered "nope" to an iPhoneInCanada reader. The company has only given out a broad July target date so far and hasn't given signs that it will arrive early into the new month.
