HP Compaq Airlife 100 review roundup: a little too dumb for a smartbook
As of last month, there were still no solid plans to ever bring HP Compaq's Airlife 100 smartbook to US soil, and judging by the first reviews surfacing across the pond, the company should probably consider keeping it that way. Paper supercapacitors could power ultra-thin computers
Stanford University today made public a new technique that could provide power on extremely thin devices. Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) printed on paper treated with polyvinylidene fluoride could act as supercapacitors, storing energy. In addition to being very thin, the nanotubes would be extremely stable and would lose only a small amount of a potential charge after 2,500 cycles.

Ryan Petrich's latest utility for jailbroken iPads just hit the Cydia store. DisplayOut for iPad sells for US$1.99. It allows you to mirror the iPad's screen out to an external display via an attached VGA or component/composite cable. Similar to earlier iPhone solutions like TV Out and ScreenSplitr, DisplayOut extends video out to the larger iPad screen. DisplayOut provides a great way to create application videos. It supports both in-app and Springboard video, so you can record complete sequences including application launch and run time.

Android 2.2 coming to Nexus One, open source community 'in the coming weeks'

Sans Digital has announced a new NAS unit, the MobileNAS MN4LA+B. The MN4LA+B is a four-bay unit supporting both iSCSI and NAS, and featuring dual Gigabit Ethernet ports. News: AT&T to hike early termination fees to $325
AT&T is planning to raise its early termination fees for smartphones and netbooks from $175 to $325, Dow Jones Newswires reports, noting that the move comes amid rumors that AT&T may lose its iPhone exclusivity over the next year. Fake Steve Jobs gives up iPhone for Android
Dan Lyons, better known to some as Fake Steve Jobs, said late Thursday that he's switching to Android for his phone. He argued that the launch of Android 2.2 tipped his hand and "blows the doors" off of iPhone OS. Lyons considered waiting for a Verizon iPhone to get off of AT&T's "awful" network, but music streaming, the Wi-Fi hotspot feature and others convinced him that Apple was being complacent, not just limited by its choice of US carrier.

Briefly: eSATA performance reviewed, VoIP gaining popularity
diglloyd has updated its series of Mac Performance Guides with a new article covering the performance of several eSATA cards available for the MacBook Pro. The guide looks at three different models, including the OWC Slim ExpressCard to eSATA Adapter ($28), Sonnet Tempo SATA Pro ($198), and Sonnet Tempo SATA Edge ($50). One district attorney's journey to iPad happiness
Filed under: iPadLet's face it. Apple and the legal profession have not always enjoyed a terribly close relationship.
Since the advent of the word processor, being a lawyer practically required a PC. Lawyers' slavish dedication to Corel's Word Perfect, long after everybody else had stopped using it, is the stuff of legend. Database management programs were typically proprietary things, all requiring networks of PCs. Using a Mac in this environment required, at best, many workarounds, and, at worst, a separate PC to access various schedulers, run conflict checks and access documents.
Recently, e-filing and the need to share and trade digital documents allowed for greater platform-independence.

Apple's policies pushing web developers away from Flash?
Apple's prohibition of Flash from its mobile devices appears to be pushing many web developers to find alternative technologies compatible with the iPhone and iPad, according to a Wall Street Journal report. J Allard may quit Microsoft over Courier's death
Microsoft's decision to kill the Courier tablet may have cost it one of its best-known employees, an investigation found this week. Chief Technical Officer J Allard, who went to the side project Alchemy Ventures after heading up the Xbox and later Zune teams, is believed to have gone on "sabbatical" but now may never come back. The Federal Trade Commission on Friday approved Google's buyout of AdMob. The US agency unanimously decided that the takeover was "unlikely to harm competition" in mobile ads and specifically pointed to Apple's creation of iAd as proof competition would exist. J Allard leaving Microsoft over Courier axing?
Well, it looks like the Courier's demise could be having some far bigger implications for Microsoft than anyone had suspected. According to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft's Chief Experience Officer and CTO for its Entertainment and Devices division, J Allard, has been on sabbatical from the company for the past short while and is "unlikely to return" -- all due to the fate of the Courier. I've downloaded over 150 apps from the App Store. Of those 150, I have roughly 100 of them still in iTunes. I've tried grouping them using springboard pages, but I find it frustrating because I don't usually have 12 related apps. (I'm really looking forward to Folders in iPhone OS 4.)

MPEG-LA: WebM group may still need to pay royalties
The primarily Google-led WebM group will likely still have to pay royalties, the MPEG-LA group's CEO Larry Horn said late Thursday. In spite of Google insisting WebM was patent- and royalty-free, the video standards group is assembling a patent pool that would let it ask for royalties for WebM and other standards. The costs would leave little reason to adopt the standard for HTML5 movies over H.264 and could result in lawsuits against Google, Mozilla, Opera or others who don't pay.

Update behebt Boot-Camp-Probleme des jüngsten MacBook Pro
Apple hat ein Boot-Camp-Update für die jüngste Generation des MacBook Pro 13 Zoll veröffentlicht. Das Update behebt ein Problem, aufgrund dessen der Rechner im Boot-Camp-Kontrollfeld bei den Helligkeitseinstellungen nur eine Fehlermeldung anzeigte. Auch die Tonausgabe über den Kopfhörerausgang soll zuverlässiger funktionieren. Das Update folgt über die Anwendung “BootCampUpdate32″ beziehungsweise “BootcampUpdate64″.

iPad supply issues may be cause for caution, says analyst
Sellouts of the iPad at Apple Stores may be a good sign for investors in some respects, but they are also reasons to check optimism, says Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster. Filed under: Friday FavoriteBetterZip is a utility I might not use every day, but I'm very thankful for it when I need it. It's an archive/compression utility which handles a broad array of archive formats, including ZIP, TAR, GZip, BZip2, and some that you rarely see on a Mac, such as 7-Zip and RAR formats. While the unarchiver built in to OS X can handle quite a few of these formats -- and is what I use on a day-to-day basis -- BetterZip adds a few very useful tools to the mix.
BetterZip opens or creates your archive in a file-list format, and you can drag files between Finder and BetterZip to add to or extract from the archive. Creating new archives is just a "File->New" or Command-N away, and you can save them in Zip, TAR, TGZ, TBZ, 7-Zip or X

2.66GHz mobile Core i5 due in fall
A roadmap leak on Friday has pointed to Intel planning a refresh of at least its mid-range notebook processors in the fall. At least one chip, the Core i5 580M, is due to take over from the existing 540M and would step up from the earlier 2.53GHz to 2.66GHz. CSIRO sues AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon over Wi-Fi
Australian research firm CSIRO has sued AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon for allegedly violating a patent it holds for Wi-Fi. The US carriers have been accused of infringing by selling phones using the wireless standard. When we reviewed Nokia's Ovi Maps and pitted it against the competition from Google we found it was by far the quickest to calculate routes and get you on your way or back on your way if you meandered off. HP slate may ship as late as October
HP's Windows 7 slate could now ship as late as October, HP's Taiwan PC group VP Monty Wong said today. Although it has often been pegged for June, the tablet is now only officially set to show by the end of HP's fiscal year five months in the future. Fraunhofer-Forscher entwickelt Mikrolinsen-Array für winzige Beamer
Marcel Sieler vom Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Optik und Feinmechanik in Jena hat die Grundlagen für eine neue, kleinere Generation von Beamer geschaffen. Während in allen aktuellen Systemen für Taschenbeamer ein einziger abbildender Kanal verwendet wird, wodurch eine minimale Größe für den Beamer vorgegeben ist, nutzt Sieler eine Vielzahl regelmäßig angeordneter Mikrolinsen (einen Array) als Objektive für die Projektion. Dadurch lässt sich die Baulänge des Gesamtsystems deutlich reduzieren, ohne die Bildhelligkeit zu beeinträchtigen.

Seagate will Hybrid-Festplatten vorstellen

Umfrageergebnis: Hohe Kundenzufriedenheit unter iPad-Besitzern

OCZ verspricht Update für mehr Speicherplatz

Erste Google-TV-Geräte angekündigt
Google hat die vorab bekannt gewordene Plattform Google TV als Kombination von Fernsehen und Web auf der Konferenz Google I/O offiziell vorgestellt. Die auf dem Betriebssystem Android basierende Software soll in Fernsehern, Settop-Boxen, Blue-Ray-Playern und andere Geräten zum Einsatz kommen. IDC: Markt für Media-Tablets wächst bis 2014 jährlich um 57 Prozent
IDC sagt dem Markt für Media-Tablets zwischen 2010 und 2014 ein jährliches Durchschnittswachstum von 57,4 Prozent voraus. Analysten-Rechnung: iPad-Verkäufe und eBook-Betrachtung
Mike Abramsky, Analyst bei RBC Capital Markets, errechnet iPad-Verkäufe in den USA von 200.000 Stück pro Woche. Dagegen sollen ‘lediglich’ 110.000 Macs innerhalb von sieben Tagen verkauft werden.
Der Investment Banker aus Kanada tippt auf bis zu 8 Millionen ausgelieferte iPads im Kalenderjahr 2010. Sicherlich nicht unrealistisch, wenn man die erste Hardware-Millionen innerhalb von 28 Tagen (alleine in den USA) absetzen konnte.
Die gleiche Analysten-Gruppe gibt ein Wachstum für den Zeitschriften- und Magazin-Markt an.

Facebook räumt Weitergabe von Nutzernamen an Werbepartner ein
Facebook hat Nutzernamen einiger Mitglieder an Werbepartner weitergegeben. Sie konnten dafür benutzt werden, den echten Namen eines Mitglieds, seine Interessen oder die Namen seiner Freunde zu ermitteln. Ein Sprecher des Unternehmens erklärte, von dem Problem seien nur weniger Nutzer betroffen gewesen. Das dafür verantwortliche Datenleck habe man schon geschlossen.

Android-Port iDroid für das iPhone 2G und 3G verfügbar
Das Google-Betriebssystem Android ist dank David Wang nun auch auf dem iPhone lauffähig: In Zusammenarbeit mit dem US-amerikanischen PCWorld hat der Entwickler nach Präsentation seines Ports noch einige Fehler ausgebügelt und eine Installations-Anleitung geschrieben, um nun die Linux-Fans dieser Welt zu beglücken. Es wird jedoch gewarnt: Obwohl der Port so ziemlich alle Funktionen unterstützt, die man von einem Smartphone erwartet, handelt es sich nach wie vor um ein Experiment. Es ist jedoch ausdrücklich nicht möglich, dass irgendein Bug das Telefon dauerhaft beschädigt oder unbrauchbar macht.

Adobe veröffentlicht Beta von Flash 10.1 für Android SDK
Adobe hat nun eine Public Beta des Flash Player für Android veröffentlicht - allerdings nur für das neu vorgestellte Android 2.2 "FroYo". Für das erste Android-Smartphone G1 wird es definitiv kein Upgrade auf Android 2.2 geben. Als Grund wird der zu kleine Gerätespeicher genannt. Umfrage: iPad-Nutzer vermissen Flash
ChangeWave Research hat iPad-Käufer zu Vor- und Nachteilen des Apple-Geräts befragt. Unter den Nachteilen wurde die Inkompatibilität zu Adobe Flash am häufigsten erwähnt (11 Prozent), gefolgt von "Probleme mit der Internetverbindung" (9 Prozent) und "Bildschirm schlecht ablesbar/ständig verschmutzt" (ebenfalls 9 Prozent). Die niedrigen Werte verraten allerdings relativ große Divergenz der Antworten.

iBookstore ab sofort auch in Deutschland erreichbar
Seit gestern lässt sich direkt vom iPad aus auf den deutschen App Store zugreifen. In den Wochen zuvor musste man zum Kauf von iPad-Software den Umweg über iTunes gehen oder aber einen US-amerikanischen iTunes-Store-Account nutzen. Nun öffnet auch der deutsche Ableger des iBookstores seine Pforten.

Google hat auf der Konferenz I/O die unter dem Codenamen "Froyo" entwickelte Version 2.2 von Android vorgestellt. The launch of the iPad will spark a surge in tablet sales over the next few years, IDC estimated today. Analysts expect Apple's hardware to lead tablets to 7.6 million units in total this year and as many as 46 million by 2014. Over 200,000 iPads being sold per week?
iPad sales are extremely strong at the moment, says RBC Capital Markets' Mike Abramsky. Citing checks, the analyst claims that figures are currently over 200,000 units per week, easily beating the 110,000 Macs Apple is estimated to be selling. The iPad is doing so well in fact that it is within range of the iPhone 3GS, which was estimated to be selling about 246,000 units per week in the US during the first quarter.

Google debuts Android 2.2 Froyo with 2-5X speed boost
Google has officially debuted Android 2.2, referred to by the monicker Froyo. The latest version features a variety of improvements, most notably a new virtual machine that is claimed to provide a speed boost of between 2X and 5X compared to v2.1. The OS also backs up app data through an API, allowing the system to migrate apps and their respective data to a new phone. The method also allows users to push map directions from Google Maps on a desktop computer to a smartphone.

iPad climbs to 16 percent of e-reader market
The iPad is already making a significant impact on the US e-reader market, a new ChangeWave survey suggests. Of 245 people identified as owning an e-reader, 16 percent say they own an iPad, despite the fact that the device has only been available since April 3rd. FCC says US cellular competition getting worse
The FCC today criticized the US cellular industry in its Annual Report on Wireless Competition (PDF). Officials warned that the industry was rapidly consolidating around just two carriers, AT&T and Verizon, while even larger rivals like Sprint and T-Mobile were struggling. Combined, the top two have over 60 percent of subscribers and income where the third and fourth places were either losing subscribers or gaining relatively few.

Patents show contextual ads, alternate Apple TV remotes
A pair of patent applications have been newly published by the USPTO, showing potential plans for the Apple TV, as well as iAd. For the former product, Apple is suggesting a way by which the set-top could take commands from remotes by other manufacturers, rather than just the stock Apple one. An essential part of the scheme would involve a "Learn Remote" menu option, through which people could train an Apple TV to link commands with a remote's unique signals.

iFixit tears down the new MacBook Mid 2010
iFixit has released its MacBook Unibody Mid 2010 teardown. The MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Mid 2010 has a new battery, which has gained in rating, improving from 60Wh to a 63.5Wh rating, with no change in size, but a minimal increase in weight. Tri-wing screws are still used for securing the battery, to the dismay of iFixit engineers. The overall impression is one of little change in structure and design. The NVIDIA GeForce 320M integrated graphics (256MB sharedDDR3 SDRAM) is new, replacing the GeForce 9400M.

IDC: Markt für Media-Tablets wächst bis 2014 um jährlich um 57 Prozent
IDC sagt dem Markt für Media-Tablets zwischen 2010 und 2014 ein jährliches Durchschnittswachstum von 57,4 Prozent voraus. iBooks funktioniert bereits in Deutschland
Anhang 62753Mit der Aktivierung der internationalen App Stores auf dem iPad, wurde auch der iBooks Store für den internationalen Markt aktiviert. Die passende iBooks App gibt es derzeit zwar nur im US-App Store, mit dieser kann aber auf das derzeit noch sehr übersichtliche deutsche iBooks Angebot zugegriffen werden. Derzeit finden sich zum ausprobieren kostenlose Bücher des Gutenberg Projekts in Store, kommerzielle und aktuellere Titel werden vermutlich zum offiziellen Start des iPads am 28.Mai eingestellt.

iBookstore wird international verfügbar
Der iBookstore von Apple, mit welchem Apple künftig eBooks vertreiben möchte, ist seit der Nacht auf heute international verfügbar geworden. Erst gestern wurde der App Store via iPads in jenen Ländern freigeschalten, welche das neue Apple Tablet ab dem 28. Mai erhalten (u.a. die Schweiz und Deutschland). Nun folgt der iBookstore. Zwar ist die iBook-Applikation (genau wie die drei iWork-Apps) nach wie vor via dem Schweizer App Store noch nicht erhältlich, wer sich jedoch die iBooks-App mittels einem US-iTunes-Account geladen hat, der kann ab sofort auf den Schweizer iBookstore zugreifen. Aktuell füllen ausschliesslich Bücher des Projekt Gutenberg die Regale des iBookstores. Diese kostenlosen Bücher werden im US-Store mit 30’000 Stück beziffert, darunter hat es auch einige wenige deutschsprachige Titel. Inwiefern das (deutschsprachige) Angebot bis zur iPad-Marktlancierung in einer Woche noch erweitert wird, steht noch in den Sternen: Apple Schweiz konnte uns diesbezüglich keine Informationen nennen.

Bundesnetzagentur versteigert Mobilfunkfrequenzen für 4,4 Milliarden
Die Bundesnetzagentur hat neue Mobilfunkfrequenzen für insgesamt 4,4 Milliarden Euro an vier verschiedene Netzbetreiber versteigert. Facebook: Fast zwei Drittel der Nutzer erwägen Austritt !
Eine aktuelle Umfrage des IT- und Datensicherheitsexperten Sophos kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass fast zwei Drittel der Facebook Nutzer erwägen, ihren Account zu löschen. Von den 1.588 befragten Nutzern haben 16 Prozent das soziale Netzwerk bereits verlassen.
Auf die Frage: “Werden Sie Facebook verlassen, weil Sie Bedenken wegen Ihrer Privatsphäre haben?”, fiel das Ergebnis wie folgt aus:

91 Prozent sind mit iPad zufrieden

Tesla lands sudden deal with Toyota, will build Model S sedan in Fremont NUMMI plant

Samsung's AMOLED division is now profitable, expects major smartphone growth in 2010
If you want the dish on what's happening with mobile displays, Lee Woo-jong, VP for marketing at Samsung Mobile Display, is as good a person to ask as any. The chap has been telling the Reuters Global Technology Summit that his company has finally gone into the black with its AMOLED production line, and that its research projects a 50 percent jump in smartphone shipments in 2010 relative to 2009. Patch für InDesign CS5 veröffentlicht
Bereits vor einigen Tagen veröffentlichte Adobe eine Aktualisierung für das vor kurzem erschienen InDesign CS5. Betroffen sind allerdings nur die deutsche und die schwedische Version für den Mac. Der Fehler fiel erst nach Erscheinen der CS5 Suite auf: User hatten sich über das seltsame Verhalten der Return- und Enter-Tasten gewundert. So erzeugte Return zum Beispiel anstelle eines Zeilenumbruchs einen Spalten- oder Textkastenumbruch.

PS3's Torne digital TV tuner / DVR adapter gets 2.00 software update next month
Japan hasn't had a lot of time to get used to the PlayStation 3's Torne digital TV tuner since it launched in March, but it's already getting an update which will add a few more DVR features to improve the experience. Coming in June, v2.00 will enable MPEG-4 AVC compression to squeeze HDTV recordings by as much as 3x their original size as opposed to just copying the original MPEG-2 stream even while playing a game, plus the ability to start watching a program and fast forward/reverse while it's still recording and update the user's PSN status. Mad musician makes a minimalist maze on his monome (video)
What do you do when you're sick of making music on your instruments? You hack them to play video games, apparently. YouTube user silverspaceship (real name Sean) worked up some code he calls monomAZe 3D, enabling you to take a journey into a very old-school 3D maze on your two fifty six edition monome, which (if you hadn't guessed) features a grid of 256 light up buttons. The intent of the device is making trippy music (such as the soundtrack to this video), but apparently it can also take you on a trip, which is mighty neat in our book. Cost of entry? About $1,400 for the two fifty six, if you can find one, but at least the source code is free.
