HP Envy 15 said to be suffering from blank screen issues, lousy webcam
We can't say we experienced the problem during our time reviewing the HP Envy 15 (though we certainly had some other issues with it), but a sizable number of users have been reporting a persistent problem with the laptop's display randomly going blank. That's apparently so far gone unremedied by any number of driver updates, with the only "fix" being a forced reboot of the computer. Also problematic is an issue some folks are reporting with the laptop's webcam, which apparently has an odd tendency to only work properly under fluorescent lighting -- move under an incandescent light and everything takes on a distinct purple hue. Wikitude Drive AR nav app beta announced, available in Android Market (video)
With all the action going down at Google I/0 you can be excused for missing this latest tidbit: the folks behind Wikitude have made the beta version of Drive (their augmented reality personal navigation app) available for free for 2,000 users. And we just got our hands on it, so we know that there are at least a few downloads left at the Android Market. The full-featured demo sports NAVTEQ map data, both AR street view and 3D map view, worldwide coverage, voice commands, and both driving and walking directions. Data Robotics gives Drobo FS full Time Machine compatibility
When Data Robotics announced the Drobo FS last month, one common complaint among potential buyers was that it doesn't offer native support for doing networked Time Machine backups. Just connecting a Drobo FS to a network of Macs could cause issues for Time Machine backups, since the built-in backup feature of Mac OS X tends to consume every last morsel of space it can and even the huge capacity of the Drobo FS could be chewed up quickly.

HP developing wrist PC for military, finally putting that flexible display to good use
Looks like that flexible plastic display Hewlett-Packard has been talking up since 2008 is finally ready to hit the big time. According to Carl Taussig, director of information surfaces at HP Labs, the company is developing a wrist PC at the behest of the US military. Behind the display, a thin strip of metal-coated plastic (merely 50 microns thick) is printed with transistors for, you know, displaying stuff. Survey: iPad customer satisfaction is at 91%
Filed under: iPadA pair of surveys from ChangeWave reinforce what we've suspected for the last month: People like the iPad a lot, and that's not about to change. The first survey of a whopping 153 people (I saw more in the supermarket this morning) found that 74% said they are "very satisfied" with their iPads, and another 17% are "somewhat satisfied." How many disliked the iPad? A full 2% claimed to be "unsatisfied." Aww.

Analyst: Apple selling more iPads than Macs, at the moment
So there's no question that Apple is selling a ton of iPads, but would you have guessed that it's actually selling more iPads than all Mac sales combined? That's the case, at least at the moment, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, who says that Apple is currently moving about 200,000 iPads per week, compared to 110,000 Macs -- though it still trails the iPhone, which is apparently racking up sales of 246,000 per week. Of course, we are just talking about analyst estimates here, and things could potentially swing back into the Mac's favor once the quarterly totals are added up. If true,

VirtualBox bietet nun auch Support für Mac OS X
Das beliebte Tool VirtualBox konnte bisher nur dazu genutzt werden um Linux unter Windows oder umgekehrt, Windows unter Linux zu emulieren. In einem extra dafür vorgesehenen Fenster läuft also ein völlig anderes Betriebssystem auf dem gleichen Rechner oder einem externen Server. News: Survey: iPad demand stronger now than before launch

MSI shows off convertible 'SketchBook' laptop concept
Well, it looks like MSI isn't waiting for Computex to show off some of its wild, new concept devices -- it's just unveiled this so-called "SketchBook" at an event in Amsterdam. Simplify Media, a Mac favorite, bought by Google

In March, we reported that the company was "heading in a different direction," which turned out to be a sale to Google. Supposed next-gen iPhone cases surface in China
We're not sure if it's a result of some hard information or simply an educated guess, but it looks like the first next-gen iPhone cases (or would-be cases) are now starting to find their way before a camera. The most convincing of those comes courtesy of Hardmac, which received the image above from one of its contacts in China -- a quick search of the model name also reveals the manufacturer, Shenzhen Soonleader Electronic Co, and a few more pics (check them out after the break). Frequenzauktion endet mit knapp 4,4 Milliarden Euro Umsatz
Nach weitgehendem Stillstand in den letzten Wochen hat die am 12. April eröffnete Auktion neuer Mobilfunkfrequenzen seit Montag wieder Fahrt aufgenommen. Google adding over-the-air app installation and iTunes streaming to Android
Sure sure, Froyo is great and all, but Google just blew our minds with two previews of upcoming Android features at I/O: OTA application installation and remote music streaming. OTA installation is just as simple as you'd expect -- after browsing to an app on your desktop, you can push it to your phone and install it with just a single click, all done over the air. Interestingly, Google also showed music being purchased and transferred from Android Marketplace in the same way, which could indicate a deeper push towards music integration, or just be a nice demo. Industry analyst -- iPad outselling the Mac
Filed under: iPadIndustry analyst Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital Markets is bullish on the iPad, noting that at this early date, Apple is selling more than 200,000 a week of the new device. By comparison, US sales of Macs are hovering at about 110,000 per week and sales of the iPhone 3GS are at about 246,000 per week based on first quarter 2010 sales figures.
Now, remember that this is all based on the iPad selling in one country -- the United States. The official international launch of the iPad is coming up at the end of next week, which prompted Abramsky to raise his estimate of global iPad sales during 2010 from 5 million to a whopping 8 million.

Deutscher iPad App Store nun online
Bereits mehr als eine Woche vor dem offiziellen deutschen Verkaufsstart des beliebten iPads, ist der App Store hierzulande frei geschaltet. Apps für das iPad können nun also eingekauft werden, obwohl man sich eigentlich noch bis zum 28. Mai (Starttermin) gedulden muss um an das iPad zu kommen.

Flash 10.1 for Android beta unveiled: Hulu a no-show, Froyo now a minimum requirement
What was once just one echelon above a myth is now finally coming to fruition. Adobe is pushing out a beta of its Flash 10.1 player alongside Google's own beta for Android 2.2 "Froyo." The general release for Flash is still on track for June, according to Anup Murarka of the Mobile and Devices team. Custom dictionary additions show in iPhone 4.0 beta 4
Another potentially useful feature has been discovered in iPhone 4.0 beta 4. Within the Keyboard section of the Settings menu, Apple has added an option called "Edit User Dictionary," allowing people to hurry up the normally automated word recognition system in the iPhone OS. International iPad App Stores open early
Ahead of a May 28th hardware launch, Apple has opened up international access to the iPad App Store. While foreign owners of American iPads have been able to get apps for some time, this has only so far been allowed via iTunes, not an iPad's own store browser. Using an iPad in theory offers the advantage of browsing only iPad-compatible apps, and operating independently of a desktop or notebook.

Samsung Wave lands at Vodafone UK June 1st
Vodafone UK has announced that it is taking preorders for the Samsung Wave smartphone, with shipment beginning June 1. Come on, admit you: you know want a Bang & Olufsen LCD. Well, the BeoVision 8 which has just been announced, is a smaller, slightly less expensive one than the BeoVision 10 is -- so maybe you'll be able to afford it, after all. New iPhone shipments may top 4m in June alone
Apple is queuing up a large number of new iPhones just for June alone, a new estimate may have revealed. Insiders claiming that the handsets' circuit boards will be made by Tripod and Unimicron also expect Apple to ship 3.5 million to 4 million units of the new smartphone for its June launch. The same sources estimated Apple would ship between 8.5 million to 9 million of the phones in the full summer quarter afterwards.

Obgleich dieses Thema (noch) nichts mit Apple direkt zu tun hat, dürfte dies der Beginn einer neuen Ära für Spiele sein. THQ führt als erster Publisher weltweit bei seinem neuen Spiel UFC Undisputed 2010 (Xbox 360) eine so genannte Pay-Wall ein. Diese 'Mauer' sieht wie folgt aus: Spieler A kauft sich das Spiel bei einem Händler seiner Wahl und spielt es. Zu Onlinespielen erhält Spieler A einen Code, damit er mit anderen Spielern zusammen spielen kann. Seit es das iPhone gibt bereitet das eingebaute Wörterbuch der Rechtschreibkorrektur Probleme. Nach den wilden Geschichten um den Prototypen der kommenden iPhone-Generation, sind nun auch erste Schutzhüllen in Asien aufgetaucht. Die Hüllen entsprechen dem Design des iPhone HD/4G-Prototypen, welcher unter anderem in einer Bar gefunden wurde.

Frequenzauktion: Gebot steht derzeit bei knapp 4,4 Milliarden Euro
Nach weitgehendem Stillstand in den letzten Wochen hat die am 12. April eröffnete Auktion neuer Mobilfunkfrequenzen seit Montag wieder Fahrt aufgenommen. 2009 rund 8,3 Millionen Steuererklärungen per Elster abgegeben
Im Jahr 2009 wurden 8,3 Millionen elektronische Einkommensteuerklärungen über das System Elster online abgegeben, wie der Bitkom auf Grundlage aktueller Daten der Finanzverwaltungen mitteilt. Fast zwei Drittel der Facebook-Nutzer denken über Kontolöschung nach
60 Prozent der Facebook-Nutzer ziehen die Löschung ihres Kontos in Erwägung, so das Ergebnis einer Umfrage des IT-Sicherheitsanbieters Sophos. Gartner: Weltweiter Handymarkt wächst um 17 Prozent
Der weltweite Handymarkt ist einer Gartner-Studie zufolge im ersten Quartal um 17 Prozent gewachsen. Zwischen Januar und März haben die Hersteller demnach insgesamt 314,7 Millionen Mobiltelefone verkauft. Kritik: VP8 ist schlechter als H.264
Der x264-Entwickler Jason Garrett-Glaser hat eine technische Analyse des von Google als Open Source freigegebenen Codecs VP8 veröffentlicht. Sein Urteil fällt kritisch aus. Deutscher App Store für importierte iPads ab sofort online
Für alle Nutzer eines importierten iPads sicher eine gute Nachricht: Heute wurde der Zugang zum deutschen Store freigegeben und Anwender mit einem dazugehörigen iTunes-Account können von nun an auch ohne US-Account auf iPad-Apps zugreifen. Das passt vor allem deshalb ganz gut, da viele Entwickler in der Zwischenzeit fleißig portieren und programmieren, damit der Store beim hiesigen Launch des iPads auch ausreichend befüllt ist. Irrespective of Apple policy, we know that many of our readers already purchased a US iPad for use -- gasp -- outside of the United States. Apple Online Store: iPad nun auch mit Swisscom
Ganze 10 Tage hat es gedauert, nun kann das iPad im Schweizer Apple Online Store auch mit einer Swisscom-microSIM vorbestellt werden. Bisher war dies nur mit einer Orange-microSIM möglich, wer das iPad hingegen mit Swisscom benutzen wollte, musste das iPad ohne Swisscom-microSIM vorbestellen und sich dann ab 28. Mai bzw. 7. Juni die microSIM selbst bei der Swisscom organisieren. Die Swisscom-SIM kostet CHF 19.90 und beinhaltet ein Startguthaben von CHF 20.–. Nach wie vor nicht gelistet ist der «Dritte im Bunde», Sunrise. Obwohl mit den günstigsten Angeboten, scheint Sunrise entweder kein Interesse daran zu haben, deren Angebote aktiv für das iPad zu bewerben, oder aber es könnte Sunrise nicht gestattet sein. App Store jetzt auch vom iPad aus erreichbar
Wer hierzulande bereits ein iPad besitzt, konnte bislang nicht direkt auf den App Store zugreifen, sondern musste für die Suche oder den Erwerb neuer Apps stets einen Computer benutzen. Auf diesen Umweg kann ab sofort verzichtet werden: Seit letzter Nacht lässt sich der App Store auch direkt vom iPad aus aufrufen, ebenso funktionieren Kauf, Installation oder das Herunterladen vom Updates nun bequem direkt. Damit Besitzer eines iPod touch oder iPhone zukünftig nicht ständig mit ausschließlich für das iPad programmierten Programmen konfrontiert werden (und umgekehrt), dürfte Apple in den nächsten Tagen auch noch den im amerikanischen App Store bereits vorhandenen Wahlschalter installieren. Damit lässt lassen sich die jeweils nicht mit dem eigenen Gerätetyp kompatiblen Apps weitgehend ausblenden.

App Store nun auch via Early-Adopter-iPads erreichbar
Zwar wird das iPad hierzulande erst am nächsten Freitag lanciert, jedoch wurden schon zahlreiche Apple Tablets aus den USA in die Schweiz importiert. Auf diesen Geräten war es bisher mit einem Schweizer iTunes Account nicht möglich den App Store direkt aufzurufen, um neue Apps zu installieren musste immer der Umweg über ein Computer mit iTunes gemacht werden. Nun, eine gute Woche vor der Markteinführung, scheint Apple den App Store auch für ausgewählte Länder ausserhalb der USA freigeschalten zu haben, so berichten uns einige Leser, dass der App Store nun auch direkt auf dem iPad funktioniert. Jedoch scheint es noch nicht bei allen Geräten der Fall zu sein, bei unseren Redaktions-iPads zumindest erscheint nach wie vor die Fehlermeldung, dass der App Store im entsprechenden Land noch nicht freigeschalten wurde.
Im Zuge des App-Store und vor allem des iBook-Store-Launches haben sich auch die iTunes AGBs geändert, sie enthalten neu auch die Regelungen betreffend den iBooks.

Apple now accepting cash for its cold hard iPads (video)
Nothing like a little bad press to change corporate policy. Diane Campbell made US national news this week (seriously) when her attempts to purchase an iPad with cash were rejected. Apple's no-cash policy (credit cards and debit cards only please) was put in place by Apple as a means of ensuring that customers were sticking to the two-device minimum -- a policy that was originally put in place in October 2007 in order to deal with high demand for the iPhone and, some would say, to keep the devices off the grey market. Google präsentiert eigenen Video-Codec WebM
Google hat mit WebM einen neuen, eigenen Video-Codec vorgestellt, der im Web eine Alternative zu H.264 darstellen soll. Im Gegensatz zu H.264 ist WebM völlig frei erhältlich – Software-Entwickler werden keine Lizenzgebühren für WebM bezahlen müssen.

Glass Tower 2 bringt ein mehr als interessantes Physik-Puzzle auf das iPhone und den iPod touch. Der Spieler baut Türme aus zerbrechlichen Glassteinen ab und darf dabei die roten Steine nicht zu zerstören.

Clicker.tv brings streaming internet video to your TV's browser; it has a web browser right?

Apple reverses no-cash iPad policy
Apple in a surprise move tonight reversed its no-cash policy for iPad sales. Responding to a TV news story of Diane Campbell being unable to pay for the tablet after saving up cash, the California company said it would allow cash at any of its stores as long as customers agreed to setup their Apple IDs at the store. Senior VP for retail Ron Johnson said he called Campbell personally and promised to have Apple deliver an iPad for free, with a case, in exchange for her trouble.

Judge dismisses paranoid lawsuit against Apple
A federal judge has decided to toss out a lawsuit filed by Leslie Carr, a paranoid MacBook user who claimed Apple was spying on her when she attempted to browse the Internet. The case, which was filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, sought $60 million in damages, as Carr claimed the harassment prevented her from publishing on the web.

Foxconn's Tegra 2 tablet a "generation ahead" of iPad
NVIDIA tonight showed a reference tablet design that it hows shows the potential of its dual-core Tegra 250 chipset. The design, made by Foxconn, should be a "generation ahead" of the iPad as it runs at the same 1GHz clock speed but uses a newer ARM Cortex-A9 architecture that's theoretically 25 percent more powerful per core than the iPad's Cortex-A8. The design has about 1GB of RAM, or four times as much as Apple's tablet.

Netflix iPad app updated to support video out to TVs and monitors
We're still not exactly sure why so many people have complained about the Netflix iPad app's lack of video-out support, but rest easy folks -- your cries of despair have been heard. Version 1.0.2, now live in the App Store, supports video out using the component, composite, and VGA dongles, as well as addressing some lingering bugs. To be perfectly honest, we'd much rather stream Netflix in HD using one of the many set-top options out there while hanging on to the iPad for some casual surfing on the side, but we won't tell you how to rock it just so long as you rock it raw.

Final Cut Studio won't be dumbed down

AT&T Wireless CEO not worried if Verizon gets the iPhone
Filed under: iPhoneThat's the word from AT&T honcho Ralph de la Vega this morning at a JPMorgan tech conference, as reported by Business Insider. Now Ralphie is not sayin' Verizon will get the iPhone, but he thinks if they do it will have a minimal impact.

Foxconn's Tegra 2-powered Android tablet hands-on (video)
Well we just got to lay hands on the above Foxconn-manufactured, Tegra 2-powered Android prototype, and we'll be honest -- it was awfully sweet. There wasn't much going on beyond some gaming action -- we didn't see it boot into standard Android -- though it was running the 3D football title you see above at a pretty healthy clip (check out the video after the break). NVIDIA reps weren't very keen on sharing info about the device, though we can tell you that it's apparently got 1GB of RAM inside cuddled up to that ARM Cortex 9 CPU, a front-facing camera, and the screen measures 9.7-inches (though it's a totally different aspect ratio than the iPad). Netflix app for iPad now provides video-out capabilities
Filed under: iPadI've been a fan of the Netflix app for iPad (free) since it first arrived on the scene, but it always made me sad that I couldn't use my little Apple Dock Connector to VGA Adapter to display videos through a projector or TV.
Now I have a happy face. As of this afternoon, Netflix has updated the app to version 1.0.2, which provides support for video output via the aforementioned VGA adapter as well as the component and composite video cables. That means that you now have the ability to stream a movie from Netflix to your iPad, then zap that movie out to your projector, VGA monitor, or any TV with component or composite inputs. Direct downloads make up just a sliver of the music actually loaded on phones, comScore discovered today. About 24 percent of all phones are used to play music, but just two percent actually obtained that music from a store found on the phone itself. The remaining 22 percent of phone owners sideloaded the music from a computer either manually or through a sync app like iTunes.

Apple: Final Cut Pro to stay focused on professionals
