O2's UK network hung up, just like the Parliament -- were you affected?
So word has it that O2's network's been a bit dodgy in some parts of the UK this evening. Did Gordon Brown's resignation cause such an outage? Did all the texts about David Cameron's shiny forehead lead to this network overload? We don't know, but our own phone's been running just fine all evening in Central London. Verizon working with Google on iPad rival
Verizon chief Lowell McAdam today said in an interview that his company is working with Google on a tablet. Speaking in a WSJ interview, the executive said tablets were part of the "next big wave of opportunities" and that Google played a key part. He didn't say if the tablet would use Android or Chrome OS but did claim that Verizon was doing its best to get the most out of a Google partnership.

Okay, so we can't say we're exactly enthralled about the styling of this here laptop trio -- Q330, Q430 and Q530 (Q430 not pictured) -- that Samsung announced in London today, but let's see if their specs can win us over. Verizon shows real-world LTE speeds in video
Verizon showed a demonstration of its trial 4G LTE network in Boston, MA, where it averaged 8.55Mbps of download speeds and 2.80Mbps when uploading. Seen in the video below, this compared very favorably to a 3G connection downloading at 2.21Mbps at the same time, though still falls short of earlier tests in Sweden where it reached 12Mbps download and 5Mbps upload speeds.

Apple tries to downplay study showing Android in front
Apple today disputed an NPD study that had Android outselling iPhones in the US. Company spokeswoman Natalie Harrison claimed the response from 150,000 survey takers was a "very limited" sample and didn't reflect the actual influence of the iPhone OS worldwide. She unusually compared it against the 85 million iPhone and iPod touch units sold in total and pointed to the iPhone's improved third place in smartphone share as evidence of its actual standing.

Phocus 2.5 adds support for 150+ cameras
Camera maker Hasselblad has announced Phocus 2.5, a future update to the company's photo editing tool. The program handles tasks like white balance, shadow/highlight adjustment and lens correction, for instance by removing moiré patterns and image distortion. The v2.5 update primarily adds RAW support for over 150 non-Hasselblad cameras, from companies such as Canon, Nikon, Leica, Sony, Fuji and Olympus.

News: AT&T pushing up upgrade dates ahead of iPhone launch?
AT&T may be in the process of pushing up the upgrade eligibility dates of iPhone users ahead of this summer’s anticipated fourth-generation iPhone launch. Hearing set over iPhone prototype search warrant
A Friday court hearing has been scheduled in the matter of unsealing records linked to the police search of the home of Gizmodo editor Jason Chen. The meeting is set for 9AM Friday morning in Redwood City, and should settle a conflict which was only extended when a request was initially denied by a San Mateo County judge. Asking for the access to an affidavit is a group of media outfits, including CNET, Bloomberg and the Associated Press, who say they want to know whether prosecutors considered journalistic shield laws before authorizing a raid.

Firefox 4 may get HTML5, multi-touch, simpler UI
Mozilla director Mike Beltzner has proposed a major reworking of Firefox in time for 4.0. The browser would get a major interface redesign with a "tabs on top" design somewhat like Chrome, simplified settings and pop-ups, and multi-touch. The renderer would get a lift through at least some HTML5 and CSS3 support, and geolocation could be built-in for any OS that can feed position data into the browser.

HDHomeRun CableCARD will feature three tuners in time for the holidays
What you're looking at here is a picture of the board that makes the new HDHomeRun CableCARD tuner work. You might notice the four squares on the right, those are the tuners, yes there are four -- don't get too excited -- but one of 'em is for the out of band data and can't actually be used to record HD. AT&T moves iPhone upgrade eligibility to June 21
AT&T has provided a possible clue as to the next iPhone's release date by moving up the upgrade eligibility for the iPhone. Multiple customers who bought an iPhone 3GS at or near its mid-June launch date last year have seen their qualification date for a new iPhone move up in the past day from November to June 21st. Not everyone has received the change in schedule, but the timing is almost always the same.

AMD adds 3GHz Athlon II X4 as part of new platform
AMD on Tuesday introduced its 2010 lineup of components for mainstream desktop PCs, including a 3.0GHz Athlon II X4 offering. The X4 640 is said to be the company's first quad-core desktop CPU in the Athlon II family to run at 3.0GHz, a modest increase over the current X4 635 model that offers 2.9GHz performance.

CBS will roll out HTML5 compliant portal for iPad

Apple brushes off NPD's smartphone report, says it sees 'no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon'
Fresh off NPD's latest Mobile Phone Track report claiming that Android has leapfrogged the iPhone in US sales, Apple is commenting on the numbers -- and as you might expect, they're not exactly taking a congratulatory tone with Google. FCC may require warnings for cellphone overage fees
The FCC today said (PDF) that it was mulling a requirement that cellular carriers warn customers about high overage fees. It warned that many subscriers weren't aware of the costs of roaming on data or voice and that safeguards might be necessary to prevent unintentionally expensive bills. PlayStation Move controller priced at $60 in Canada
Sony's been pretty fuzzy on pricing for the PlayStation Move -- we've only really heard "under $100" for the full package with controller and camera -- but it looks like the numbers are starting to solidify, as Gamestop Canada has the controller itself now listed for $59.99. How that number will translate into a US price is obviously up in the air, but Sony's MSRPs tend to be the same or similar across the US and Canada, so we'd say we've at least got a reasonable estimate of how much this thing is going to cost. If you're using a jailbroken iPad, you'll be pleased to discover that the camera connection kit allows you to connect a USB stick or hard drive and access it from your iPad. Apple promises to fix iPad WiFi issues in future software update
Not satisfied with Apple's previous "fixes" for those pesky WiFi issues with the iPad? Then it looks like the folks in Cupertino have you covered, or will soon -- the company recently updated its support document on the issue to say that "Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update." Macs, iPads selling well through June quarter, says analyst
Halfway into the June quarter, Mac and iPad sales are looking healthy, says Kaufman Bros.' Shaw Wu. The analyst cites "industry and supply chain checks," which indicate that Mac sales are doing well as a result of the recent MacBook Pro refresh. This introduced Core i5 and i7 processors into Apple notebooks, while also extending battery life to between 8 and 10 hours. It looks like Apple could post its third consecutive quarter of 20+ percent year-over-year unit growth, Wu remarks.

Boxee signs deal to offer paid content
Boxee on Tuesday said it has partnered with payment platform provider Vindicia on bringing paid content to the Boxee Box and its media front-end app. The company's CashBox will help to offer pay-per-view products as well as time-based subscriptions. Sony adds 30MB per second pro Memory Stick
To coincide with the early confirmation of its new mirrorless NEX-series Alpha cameras, Sony has revamped its Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX memory cards for faster transfer speeds. Borders Kobo joins eReader frenzy, iPhone app coming

It will launch in June with an accompanying eBook store, stocked with more than a million titles. Jobs now fully recovered from operation, sources say
Steve Jobs is now doing fine medically, operating much the way he did before his recent liver problems took hold, say Bloomberg sources said to be "close" to the Apple CEO. The major issue is believed to be weight, as Jobs remains unusually thin, to the extent that he allegedly discusses the problem with acquaintances. One former Apple executive observes though that Jobs has actually intensified work since returning. Three other Apple workers comment that he has been seen around the Cupertino campus more often, for instance taking meals in the cafeteria.

Bereits vor fast zwei Jahren äußerte sich ein Vertreter von Electronic Arts (EA) zu den – aus Publisher-Sicht – ungünstigen Weiterverkäufen von Spielen. Einsatz unlizenzierter Software nimmt in Deutschland leicht zu
Der Anteil unlizenzierter Software ist 2009 in Deutschland von 27 auf 28 Prozent gestiegen, so ein Ergebnis der siebten von IDC im Auftrag der Business Software Alliance (BSA) durchgeführten Global-Piracy-Studie. Demnach wurden im vergangenen Jahr hierzulande Programme im Wert von 1,35 Milliarden Euro illegal verwendet. In der EU wird dieser Wert nur von Frankreich übertroffen. Dort seien 40 Prozent der eingesetzten Programme unlizenziert, was einem Wert von 1,7 Milliarden Euro entspreche. Weltweit kam 2009 unlizenzierte Software im Wert von 51,4 Milliarden Dollar zum Einsatz.

The Department of Homeland Security's Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) is warning of a recent and serious security flaw in Safari. The folks over at Phantom Fish software have released version 3 of their popular Byline feed reader app for the iPhone. The update brings with it several new features, including integration with Instapaper, gesture-based navigation, and improved performance.

Nokias N8 in der Hand, leider nicht eingeschaltet

Unsere US-Kollegen haben in London Nokias Design-Chef Marko Ahtisaari getroffen, der einen Prototypen des kommenden Smartphone-Flaggschiffs N8 aus der Tasche zauberte, um ihn den verdutzten Gästen in die Hand zu drücken. Leider durfte das Gerät dabei nicht in Betrieb genommen werden, wie sich Symbian^3 anfühlt, sollen wir nämlich erst im Herbst erfahren. Aber soviel kann man wohl schon sagen: Das N8 liegt gut in der Hand und ist erstaunlich leicht, dafür muss man fix installierte Akkus in Kauf nehmen.

Kaleidescape's just announced another line of high end home entertainment products -- this time it's the M300 and M500 Blu-ray players. The M500 also boasts Blu-ray copying abilities, too -- allowing you to import Blu-rays, DVDs and CDs onto your server at home. In an interesting decision, Kaleidescape will require that the physical disc be present for playback from the server -- which, you may be thinking, rather defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Pretty much. Thankfully, Kaleidescape's got a disc loader in the works which will allow you to keep a "large number" of discs ready in the system for faster loading. Acer verzeichnet deutliches Umsatz- und Gewinnplus
Acer hat seine kosolidierten Finanzergebnisse für das erste Quartal 2010 vorgelegt. Canon SD4000 IS brings S90 features to regular users
Canon today had a rare out-of-expo introduction for a new point-and-shoot, the PowerShot SD4000 IS. New Windows malware bypasses most current antivirus apps
Researchers at Matousec have found malware that could potentially compromise nearly every Windows XP system using current antivirus software. KHOBE (Kernel Hook Bypassing Engine) takes advantage of the vulnerable System Service Descriptor Table to trick Microsoft's OS into accepting rogue code. It allows a safe code thread to be scanned by antivirus apps but immediately swaps in a thread containing a virus or other attack, giving the malware free rein.

Square has officially launched an iPhone-compatible version its self-named mobile payment app, following up on an earlier iPad-only release. Intended for businesses, the app processes cash and credit card transactions without needing a register or a specialized handheld. MSI's Slatebook 10-inch Atom tablet is not what we've been waiting for
DigiTimes has it that MSI will be showcasing a 10-inch Windows 7 "Slatebook" tablet at Computex in June. According to its sources which tend to be pretty solid at Taiwanese shops, the sub-$500 tablet will feature an e-book reader with a negotiated content provider, 3G and WiFi wireless, and Windows 7 running on Intel's old Menlow-class of Atom Zxx processors. Einige der über 2300 Facebook-Freunde von Jim Breyer, einem Investor von Accel Partners, der im Facebook-Vorstand sitzt, bekamen eine Einladung mit der Frage: "Wollen Sie eine Facebook-Telefonnummer?" Nokia simplifies structure to take on smartphone rivals
Nokia today said it would restructure itself to better compete with its rivals. The copmany will now be split into three groups. A basic Mobile Phones group will handle the low-end S40 phones that make up the bulk of Nokia's business. The Mobile Solutions group will tackle smartphones and will itself be split into separate groups to handle MeeGo and all smartphone-class Symbian platforms. A firmware update is in the works for the iPad's troublesome Wi-Fi issues, Apple has confirmed. The information is mentioned in an updated support article, which offers ways of dealing with unreliable or simply weak and/or broken Wi-Fi connections. Sony makes NEX mirrorless pro cameras official for US
Sony fired its opening salvo in mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras by launching the Alpha NEX-3 and NEX-5. Elaborating on an early reveal, Sony sees both as trumping Micro Four Thirds cameras through their sensors. Either has a 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor that reaches APS-C size; the dimensions match those of most DSLRs and are about 60 percent larger than with the MFT system, cutting back on noise while allowing sensitivity as high as ISO 12,800.

Adobe shows Flash running on Android 2.2
Adobe in a new video demo (see below) has shown not only Flash 10.1 for mobile but a teaser of the next version of Android. The plugin now appears to run smoothly on a Nexus One and can handle most common use cases for Flash, including 3D, gaming, video and simply dynamic web content. Adobe's Ryan Stewart also explained some of how certain elements work: users tap-and-hold on an interactive Flash component to switch away from manipulating the browser.

Sunrise: iPad Benutzung mit micro-SIM
Zwar hat der «dritte im Bunde», Sunrise, nach wie vor keine iPad-spezifischen Angebote beworben, jedoch ist das iPad bekanntlich nicht mit einem Net- oder SIM-lock ausgestattet und deshalb kann das iPad mit dem persönlichen Wunschprovider, also zum Beispiel auch mit Sunrise-Angeboten, benutzt werden. Die Swisscom und Orange bieten neben den normalen Daten-Abos auch spezielle Preispläne für das iPad an — Sunrise bisher, wie erwähnt, (noch?) nicht. Jedoch hat Sunrise einige im Vergleich zur Swisscom und Orange vor allem preislich interessante Angebote im Petto.
Bisher bot Sunrise für ihre Angebote jeweils nur die normalen SIM-Karten an, das iPad jedoch benutzt sogenannte «Micro-SIM»-Karten, oder «halbe SIM»-Karten. Mit etwas Geschick kann man jede normale SIM-Karte zu einer Micro-SIM zuschneiden und sie somit auch in einem iPad benutzen. Nun schreibt 2lounge.ch, dass Sunrise ab nächster Woche (Montag, 17. US-Carrier Sprint will Google Nexus One nicht ins Programm nehmen
Google hat mit seinem ersten Smartphone Nexus One kein Glück bei den amerikanischen Telefongesellschaften. Firefox 4 unterwegs: HTML5 und Touch-Funktionalität
Mozilla-Manager Mike Beltzner hat den Unternehmensplan für das kommende Firefox 4 vorgestellt und bekanntgegeben, dass die Version 3.7 einfach übersprungen wird. Teile der für diese Versin geplanten Änderungen werden nun einfach in einem Mini-Update als 3.6.4 veröffentlicht, massive Schritte kommen dann in der Version 4. Der GigaPan Epic Pro ist ein Foto-Robotter, der automatisch Panoramas erstellt und dabei eine einfache Taktik verfolgt: Er ist in der Lage, mit der Linse einer Spiegelreflexkamera zu zoomen und so hunderte Fotos zu schießen, die anschließend perfekt passend zusammengesetzt werden können. Wi-Fi Fehler: Apple verspricht iPad-Update
Mit etwas Glück dürften die in den vergangenen Wochen aufgetauchten Probleme des iPad Wi-Fi Moduls bereits zum Deutschland-Start des Gerätes der Vergangenheit angehören. Kompatibilitätsproblem: SpinPoint F3(EG) und SB850
Inkompatibilitäten zwischen verschiedenen Hardwarekomponenten gibt es immer mal wieder. Einen weiteren mussten wir nun beim Testen von Samsungs SpinPoint F3 miterleben. Die Festplatte wurde schlicht beim Booten nicht erkannt und die SMART-Daten zeigten ein Problem beim Spin-Up.

Sony reduziert Verlust im Geschäftsjahr 2009/2010
Sony hat im Geschäftsjahr 2009/2010 (bis 31. März 2010) einen operativen Gewinn von 32 Milliarden Yen (271 Millionen Euro) erwirtschaftet. Das Nettoergebnis liegt mit 41 Milliarden Yen (347 Millionen Euro) weiterhin im Minus, aber unter dem im Februar vorausgesagten Fehlbetrag von 70 Milliarden Yen. Im Geschäftsjahr 2008/2009 (bis 31. März 2009 wies die Bilanz des Elektronikkonzerns noch ein Minus von 98,9 Milliarden Yen (838 Millionen Euro) aus. Das geht aus den am Montag veröffentlichten vorläufigen Quartalszahlen (PDF) des Unternehmens hervor.

Microsoft confirms Natal launch in October (video)
We've heard it before, now Microsoft's Syed Bilal Tariq is repeating the October launch date for Natal. Speaking to GamerTagRadio, Microsoft's marketing manager for Saudi Arabia says that the Natal launch,
"is going to be somewhere in October and we will be in a position to confirm the date at E3, which is in June, but definitely it is going to be October 2010."

Ebay: Zahlen zum iPad-Exportgeschäft
Mit dem "Ask eBay"-Artikel bietet die Webseite "The Next Web" einen interessanten Nachtrag zu der am Samstag veröffentlichten Statistik über die iPad-Exporte aus den USA. Laut den im Yahoo-Blog veröffentlichten Zahlen landete rund jedes zehnte, in den USA verkaufte iPad außerhalb Europas. Dennis Goedegebuure, ein eBay-Manager, geht in seinem Gastbeitrag auf "The Next Web" nun etwas tiefer ins Detail. So wurden nur 35% der in den ersten zwei Wochen nach dem Verkaufsstart auf eBay eingestellten iPad-Modelle innerhalb Amerikas verschickt. 65% verließen die USA. Das Land mit dem großten iPad-Bedarf scheint England zu sein. 550 Geräte traten in den ersten zwei Wochen ihre Reise auf die Insel an. Nach Deutschland gingen 234 Geräte. Der niederländische Ebay-Angestellte Dennis Goedegebuure schrieb für TheNextWeb einen Gastbeitrag, in dem er einige Statistiken zum iPad-Handel auf der US-Auktionsplattform mitteilte. Im zweiwöchigen Verkaufszeitraum von Anfang bis Mitte April 2010 sollen dabei rund 3.600 Geräte von internationalen Käufern erworben worden sein. Dies entspricht rund 65-Prozent aller auf Ebay.com gehandelten iPads.

Motorola Twist heißt jetzt Flipout, bleibt aber quadratisch

Vor einem knappen Monat war Motorolas neues Android-Handy mit ein paar Specs unter dem Namen "Twist" das letzte Mal aufgetaucht, nun hat Gizmodo Brazil ein paar scharfe Fotos, ein paar weitere Specs und einen neuen Namen für Motorolas Quadrathandy aufgetan: "Flipout". Die Specs: Android 2.1 mit ein klein wenig Motoblur, ein 2,8-Zoll Display, komplettes QWERTY-Keyboard, 700 MHz Prozessor, 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM, GPS, und eine 3,1-Megapixel Kamera. Mozilla plant 64-Bit-Version von Firefox 4

So wie es aussieht kooperieren Microsoft und LG in Südkorea, um LGs neue 3D-Fernseher zusammen mit 3D-Spielen für die XBox 360 zu vermarkten. Zunächst soll Korea dabei als Testmarkt dienen, geplant ist danach eine Erweiterung im asiatischen Raum. Kommt heute ein neues MacBook Air, oder...
Nach Angaben aus Australien, könnte Apple heute ein neues MacBook Air präsentieren. Nach deren Spekulation könnte es sich aber auch um ein neues 27“ LED-Cinema-Display handeln. Was denn nun?
Auf jeden Fall brodelt es reichlich in der Gerüchteküche. Angeblich ist eine neue Produktnummer für diese Spekulation verantwortlich. Wobei es sich neben den genannten Produkten auch um etwas ganz anderes handeln könnte. Wie wäre es z.B. mit einem neuen MacBook? Nachdem im letzten Monat die neuen MacBook Pro Modelle auf den Markt gekommen sind, wäre das auch eine mögliche Option.
Aber auch der Mac Pro ist mehr oder weniger überfällig. Das letzte Update bekam dieser im März 2009. Sollte heute wirklich ein neues Produkt aus dem Hause Apple kommen

iPad: Telekom ist dritter offizieller Apple-Partner
Die Telekom bleibt entgegen dem ersten Eindruck in Sachen iPad nicht außen vor, sondern wird wohl in Kürze neben Vodafone und O2 als dritter offizieller Apple-Partner in den Bestelloptionen für das UMTS-iPad gelistet.
Auf der Infoseite zum 3G-iPad hat Apple bereits gestern ein T-Mobile-Logo unter den Signets Vodafone und O2 platziert (Danke Daniel), deutlicher formuliert es die Telekom selbst im Zusammenhang mit der Ankündigung der neuen Xtra-Tarife fürs iPad:
"Die neuen Xtra-Tarife können in Kürze zusammen mit dem Apple® iPad
vorbestellt werden."
Demnach wird man beim Bestellvorgang für ein UMTS-iPad zukünftig nicht nur zwischen den Mikro-SIM-Karten von Vodafone und O2 wählen können, sondern alternativ auch eine Mobilfunkkarte der Telekom mitbestellen können.

Android überholt Apple im US-Smartphonemarkt
Android-Smartphones haben im ersten Quartal 2010 in den USA einen Marktanteil von 28 Prozent erreicht. Damit verdrängten diese Geräte Apples iPhone OS vom zweiten Platz. Konami veröffentlicht Internation Track and Field für iPhone
Sportsfreunde werden sich an den Klassiker “Track and Field” von Konami erinnern, der zwar nicht ganz den Kultstatus der Summer oder Wintergames erreichte, aber eben im selben Gewässer fischte und ebenfalls treue Anhänger fand. Legal briefs confirm iPhone deal originally to end in 2012
A pair of legal documents found today have confirmed that AT&T's exclusive deal for the iPhone was originally set to last until 2012. As part of an amended motion to dismiss a 2007 lawsuit and a court response denying a dismissal, Apple admitted that a USA Today article leaking the details of the 5-year contract was accurate. Although never officially made public, the term "was not 'secret,'" the company said in the October 2008 court denial.
