Zune HD hands-on
Sure, it was fun to have Ballmer run us through a little demo of the new Zune HD, but we'd be remiss in our duties if we didn't spend some time manhandling the device ourselves. We managed to track down the beast and toy with it a bit, and we must say the thing kind of rocks. In your hand the Zune HD has a nice, solid feel, with good heft to it and a surprisingly thin profile. The OLED screen looks absolutely stunning -- even at severe viewing angles, colors were super bright, edges were crisp, and text looked beautiful. The UI is an extension of the exisiting Zune interface, but way tricked out in this version, with lots of flipping images, scaling text, smooth scrolling, and an extreme emphasis

Total Phase releases Data Center 3.0 for Mac
Total Phase has released a Mac-compatible version of Data Center 3.0. The software analyzes and debugs USB, I2C, and SPI bus data in real-time, aiming to improve business productivity. MacBook Pro: Firmware Update verbessert Lüfterverhalten
Ein weiteres Update steht für Besitzer eines MacBook Pro 15-Zoll und 17-Zoll bereit, das laut Apple die Regelung der Lüfter unter hoher Prozessorlast verbessert. Apple updates iWork to 9.0.2
Apple has just published an update to its iWork 09 production suite.
Said update is described, in typical Apple fashion , like so:
This update improves reliability when saving some iWork documents and when playing some presentations more than once per Keynote session.
This update is recommended for all users of iWork '09.
It weighs about 45MB and can be downloaded using OSX's Software Update or on Apple's website.

NI releases Deep Reconstructions pack for Kore 2

Dell Studio 14z hands-on
We got a quick look at Dell's new Studio 14z thin-and-light, budget-friendly laptop, and were mildly impressed. The thing is lighter than it looks, has a great blend of performance, price, inputs and outputs, and doesn't even look too frumpy to boot. The chiclet-ish keyboard is fine, though not great, and while the lack of Studio XPS-style leather frills and capacitive touch controls might be seen as a drawback to some, we actually like the no-nonsense approach. Palm confirms Pre sync with iTunes, iPhoto
Palm at the D7 event today confirmed that the Pre and likely other webOS phones will sync with Apple software. Roger McNamee self-parodies his Palm Pre superlatives: "it eats iPhones for breakfast"
The ever-quotable, perennially unkempt Roger McNamee of Elevation Partners fame indulged in a bit of self-parody in a mock-commercial screened at D7 before he and Jon Rubinstein took the stage. While incredibly entertaining, the video also acts as a bit of damage control for Roger, who infamously stated that there would be a massive and sudden exodus from the iPhone to the Pre once those original iPhone contracts are up. iTunes support confirmed for Palm Pre
We'd already heard through the gravevine that iTunes support would be baked into Palm's forthcoming Pre, but now it's official. During Palm's D7 keynote today in Carlsbad, Paul Cousino showed attendees that non-DRM music, photos and videos could be synced with the Pre via iTunes (on Mac and Windows, naturally). Comcast about to launch 100Mbps Internet?
Comcast may be on the verge of upgrading its DOCSIS 3.0 cable Internet access to 100Mbps, a rumor says. NBC admits asking Apple for a cut of hardware sales

InvenSense gloats about world's first 6-axis MEMS-based motion sensing solution
We tell ya, some proud folks work at InvenSense. After boasting last year about its Wii MotionPlus-powering IDG-600 motion sensor, the company is set to gloat once more at E3 this year. Verizon confirms Palm Pre, BB Storm sequel

New iPhone parts already being sold in China?
Gizmodo has found a few parts being advertised as 3rd Generation 2009 iPhone parts coming out of Hong Kong and delivered "within 5 to 12 working days." If that is true, you could order up a whole iPhone and piece it together before they are released next month! Well, at least a black bezel. iLounge reports that the speaker position is moved up a bit and the bezel is now black, meaning the outside strip around the iPhone will be blackif this is the real deal.

Final Cut Pro Studio 3 to allow realtime editing of 1080P H.264 video?
We know you Final Cut Pro Jockies have been itching for some more information about Final Cut Pro Studio 3. Beyond FCP S 3's existence, we are now hearing that you'll be able to edit full 1080P HD video in realtime. No more rendering.
While we don't have specifics, it sounds a lot like Snow Leopard's harnessing of those GPU cycles is going to pay big dividends for video editors. Apple's technology for using GPU's to perform traditionally CPU-intensive jobs is called OpenCL.

Computerworld: Will video chatting be part of the next iPhone?
Matt Hamblen over at Computerworld has been pondering whether or not the iPhone 3.0 will have video conferencing capabilities amongst its other Photo and Video tricks.
The MMS software reports indicate to some observers that the next iPhone (due out July 17, according to some speculation) could support iPhone video chat, which would be possible with a good camera and microphone and a fast wireless connection.
Apple has filed a patent that certainly makes the case. They also might have moved the speaker over in the new iPhone design to facilitate the camera.

Ubisoft CEO YVes Guillemot is no stranger to the video game world. The head of the company behind hits such as Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell has repeatedly addressed the topic of the next generation of consoles. When asked by a financial analyst on a call this week he said:
"We will see more customers coming to the video game industry .. they will start also to come under the boxes you see under the TV because those TV boxes will be more powerful.. We will see more consoles on which we will be able to put products. As for the next generation of consoles we can't give you a date but from what we see there is a lot of energy to improve the consoles [that are out now.] We are already working on some of the elements that will appeal in the next generation."

Wie USA Today berichtet, will Apple in diesem Jahr weltweit noch 25 neue Ladengeschäfte eröffnen, neben Hamburg gelten Paris und Mailand als sichere Standorte in Europa, zudem gab es bereits Hinweise auf einen weiteren deutschen Apple Store in Frankfurt.

Flash-Video: HD Videos ruckeln in FullScreen - Fix
Bei einigen Macs kommt es z.B. bei High-Definition Videos unter Youtube in Safari oder Firefox etc. im Fullscreen-Modus zu Ruckeleinlagen oder fallenden FPS (Frames per second).
Um diese Problematik zu beheben gibt es einen einfachen, aber oft effektiven Trick:
Im laufenden HD Flashfilm einfach mit ctrl-Click (oder Rechtsklick) in das Video klicken und “settings…” wählen-.
Dort nun unter dem ersten Reiter links “Enable hardware acceleration” abhaken (ab, nicht an!).

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot: AppleTV to become gaming platform
Ubisoft CEO YVes Guillemot is no stranger to the video game world. The head of the company behind hits such as Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell has repeatedly addressed the topic of the next generation of consoles. When asked by a financial analyst on a call this week he said:
"We will see more customers coming to the video game industry .. they will start also to come under the boxes you see under the TV because those TV boxes will be more powerful.. Das Apple 2.0-Blog von Fortune enthüllt ein interessantes Detail zu dem für Anfang Juni angekündigten iPhone-Konkurrenten Palm Pre: Die eigene iTunes-Musiksammlung lässt sich - so lange es sich nicht um die alten mit DRM geschützten Titel handelt - problemlos darauf übertragen, der Pre wird genau so behandelt als wäre er ein iPod oder iPhone.

Palm Pre said to sync up nicely with Apple's iTunes
There's been no direct confirmation just yet, but Fortune has it that Palm's hotly anticipated Pre actually syncs with iTunes. Yeah, iTunes. Spekulationen rund um ein iPhone nano sind bereits mehrere Monate alt. Immer wieder bringen neue Infos den Stein ins Rollen. Solar paneled umbrella will charge your gadgets while you hang in the sun
We see boatloads of solar charging gizmos around here, but they're usually not so large. What we have here is a big sunning umbrella, for use outdoors (obviously), which has large flexible solar panels made by Konarka on top. The solar collecting panels store the energy in the stem of the Powerbrella as it's called, and it's got outlets at its base for charging your phone, PMP, etc. The 'brellas have already been tested in Florida, and are set to be manufactured by Sky Shades, for release sometime this summer. New white MacBook specs trigger UK price hike
Apple's modest increase of specifications for the white MacBook -- including 800MHz RAM, a 160GB hard drive and a 2.13GHz CPU -- has led to a price increase in the UK, local Mac users note. Computerworld: Will Video chatting be part of the next iPhone?
Matt Hamblen over at Computerworld has been pondering whether or not the iPhone 3.0 will have video chat capabilities amongst its other Photo and Video capabilities.
The MMS software reports indicate to some observers that the next iPhone (due out July 17, according to some speculation) could support iPhone video chat, which would be possible with a good camera and microphone and a fast wireless connection.
There are some other factors to consider. First, the iPhone would need to have either a front-facing camera or a "periscope" type of mirror to bring the camera view over the top of the iPhone. Remember Nokia's Home Control Center launched in December with plans to send home automation product to retail by the end of 2009. Well, it's been upended today with Nokia bowing out of its own smart home activities and licensing the technology to the independent There Corporation -- a company that now employees Nokia's former Smart Home team. Back2School-Rabatt auf Mac/iPod-Bundle
In Deutschland ist die diesjährige Back To School-Promotion von Apple angelaufen. Wer vor dem 8. September einen Mac (außer Mac mini) zusammen mit einem iPod kauft, bekommt bis zu 185 Euro zurück erstattet. Der diesjährige Apple-Slogan "Fürs Studium einen Mac kaufen und auf einen iPod touch freuen" hinkt allerdings etwas. Auf den maximalen Erstattungsbetrag von 185 Euro muss man noch 34 Euro drauf legen, um den günstigsten Touch im Apple Store zu erwerben.
Letztes Jahr lief die Promo deutlich später und mehr oder weniger zeitgleich mit der Einführung der aktuellen Nano- und Touch-Generation. Für kurze Zeit gab es damals auch ein günstigeres 4 GB-Modell des iPod nano, das preislich fast identisch mit dem von Apple gewährten Rabatt war.

Der chinesische Händler China OnTrade bietet bereits jetzt Ersatzteile für die nächste iPhone-Generation an. Die Echtheit der im Onlinshop des Händlers gelisteten Displays und Gehäuserahmen lässt sich allerdings bis zur offiziellen Präsentation des neuen iPhones nicht bestätigen. Possible solution for Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 update issue 'mdworker'
Some users have noticed that after the Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 update the mdworker process was consuming a rather large portion of their processing power--in some cases over 130 percent. The mdworker issue was noted in our second installment of "Readers Report" sent in by MacFixIt reader "Robert H." who noted that Time Machine was being affected by mdworker hanging. MacFixIt reader "Leo M." writes in today with another possible fix for the mdworker issue.

Guest Account not working after editing "advanced" options
When you enable log-in for the guest account, Mac OS X sets it up just like a regular account in that it's given a home folder and user and group attributes for creating and managing files. As with any account, if these attributes are changed, you can damage the account and prevent it from logging on properly. Sometimes people have done this and have not known how to revert their changes.

10.5.7 printing problems addressed
Anytime Apple releases a major system update is released, expect a number of small probles to crop up. This has been true for the recently released version 10.5.7 update for OS X, and we have covered a variety of the major problems, as well as small problems that may only affect one or two people. Among some of these problems were those with printing where people were experiencing crashes and missing features such as the inability to print to PDF.

Finder not calculating folder sizes
To organize files and folders on your disk, you may choose to have the Finder calculate the size of folders on your disk. This can be done by either getting info on a particular folder, or by going to the "Show View Options" in the "View" menu and choosing "Calculate all sizes" with a particular folder open. Sometimes this process can take a long time, especially when using the view options but also in the Get Info window, which is has been frustrating to several users.

By adding Apple certification on its SSD models, OCZ opened a marketing strategy that Supertalent wants to follow. In a PDF document describing all specifications of its last SSD models, Supertalent clearly indicates that they have been tested on MacBook, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro, and even use benchmark tests performed on Mac hardware. Intel Provides Additional Details about its Octo Core Xeon Nehalem EX
Intel started to unveil some details about its forthcoming Xeon EX processor which will feature 8 cores. they will sport 24 MB of shared cache, manage 16 threads and be composed of 2.3 billions transistors A new chipset will allow management of 16 RAM modules per CPU, while being able to control up to 16 of such CPU simultaneously a motherboards with 64 cores.they will also include a technology originating from the Itanium, Machine Check Architecture (MCA). Under this acronym is defined a powerful error proofing system that will continuously check errors in process and memory cache in order to prevent any crash.Both CPU and chipset are expected for the second half of the year. Of course, we do not know if Apple will use such high-end CPU in the Mac Pro, or will use them to launch a new hardware model which could be an ultimate working station. Overclocked and Silent GeForce GTX 285 PC
sparkle, a graphic card manufacturer for PC, will launch a NVidia GeForce GTX 285 that could give us some ideas about the future Mac Edition model.
They updated the cooling system with a Accelero Xtreme GTX 280 from Artic Cooling. they then overclocked the card to 666/1512/2520MHz from 648/1476/2484MHz, while maintaining it silent. We suspect that one can overclock even further this card with such oversized cooling system. The true release date of the GeForce 285 GTX Mac Edition remains unknown, and despite several request from different sources, we could only confirmed that what we previously announced: the card will be released soon, most likely in June.

Final Cut Pro 3 to allow realtime editing of 1080P H.264 video?
We know you Final Cut Pro Jockies have been itching for some more information about Final Cut Pro 3. Beyond FCP 3's existance, we are now hearing that you'll be able to edit full 1080P HD video in realtime. No more rendering.

New iPhone parts already being sold in China?
Gizmodo has found a few parts being advertised as 3rd Generation 2009 iPhone parts coming out of Hong Kong and delivered "within 5 to 12 working days." If that is true, you could order up a whole iPhone and piece it together before they are released next month! Well, at least a bezel. We're looking it over for interesting tidbits. Anyone find anything interesting? (yes, we know that is our job).

News: Purported next-gen iPhone bezel shows speaker, color changes
Images from Hong Kong depict several significant changes from the bezels of prior iPhones to the next-generation model, if their source is to be believed. Microsoft Touch Pack brings Surface experience to Windows 7
Our initial experience with Windows 7's multitouch was decidedly less than stellar, but it looks like Microsoft's taking the initiative to ramp up the usability with the newly-unveiled Touch Pack. It's a software suite consisting of three games and three Surface apps, including a a globe you can pinch and twist around, the ever-popular surface collage for images, and and a zen-inspired lagoon screensaver. OEMs making touchscreen-capable Windows 7 rigs are being offered the pack to use as a pre-installed option, so look for these to arrive around the same time as the new OS, which should be sometime this holiday season. Immersion demos new multitouch, haptic keyboard at D7
Immersion (known for creative input experiences) demoed a fairly interesting new haptic experiment its working on -- a virtual, iPhone-like keyboard that not only responds with sound and vibration, but some kind of feedback that recreates the feeling of actually moving your fingers across a keyboard. Details were scarce on the technology used, but during the demo at D7 the company showed off multitouch typing, and a new form of feedback which seems to create the sensation that there is a physical keyboard beneath your fingers. The functionality sounds eerily similar to the Haptikos technology that Nokia showed off way back in 2007. We're working on more details, but for now, feast your eyes

New Intel Core i7 CPUs show up unannounced
Intel's Core i7 has become somewhat of a mainstay in the most recent wave of gaming rigs, but it's been quite awhile (in processor years, anyway) since we've seen any new siblings join the launch gang. We'd heard faint whispers that a new crew was set to steal the stage on May 31st, and those rumors are looking all the more likely now that a few heretofore unheard of chips have appeared online. The 3.06GHz Core i7 950 is shown over at PCs For Everyone with 8MB of shared L3 cache and a $649 price tag, and it's expected that said chip will replace the aging Core i7 940. Moving on up, there's the luscious 3.33GHz Core i7 Extreme 975, which is also listed with 8MB of shared L3 cache but packs a staggering price tag well above the $1,100 mark. Report: Ex-Apple exec overhauled Palm Pre design

Plastic Logic e-book reader: now with 3G
You're probably wondering what's been happening with that super thin, super sexy Plastic Logic e-book reader that we've seen floating around various tradeshows. Well, the device has landed at D7, and it's got a few new features cooked up -- most notably, built-in 3G data. There's no specifics on what carriers or bands, but besides that WiFi connectivity, you'll be able to go totally nuts out in the real world. Additionally, it looks like the company has seriously tweaked the UI, now providing a simple and clear interface for getting around your documents, and a page-turning gesture (don't mind the green tint in the pic above, the screen is still very much grayscale). Palm Pre camera used, results shared at long last
Palm's official Twitter account just tweeted about testing out yfrog, the image / video sharing site -- and as you might expect from a manufacturer, it wants to share pictures snapped with its own equipment. Thanks to some helpful EXIF data parsed out by the site, we know the image you're looking at here was taken using a Pre, apparently smack in the middle of enjoying a few 5-cent horsey rides. As far as we can tell this is the first shot we've seen posted from the Pre's camera, and we're cautiously optimistic about what the 3 megapixel sensor has managed to do here. RIM CEO: "SurePress is here to stay"
In a scandalous, but not entirely shocking turn of events, RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis has declared from the stage of D7 in no uncertain terms that "SurePress is here to stay." The trouble is, there's no clarification of what he means by that, since the Storm 2 we've been toying with quite obviously lacks a click-screen mechanism. Our best shot-in-the-dark guess is that RIM has developed some alternative to a physical click that may or may not duplicate the functionality adequately, while hopefully removing some of the frustration experienced by the physical click of the Storm. Soon one will be able to exchange just a faulty trackpad on the Unibody portables
On the Unibody portables, the trackpad is not soldered in as with the preceding machines, but dismountable. However, Apple did not provide this part by itself for after-sales service so one is obliged to replace the whole case of the machine in the event of failure. At the beginning of June, it will be possible to make exchange this part alone.
Even though this has a small impact on the affected customers up to now, since repairs were done under guarantee, they will in future be able to replace a failed trackpad at a cost much lower than that of the whole case, especially as the time to do the repair will be much less.
Of course, Apple will also make large economies for the exchanges under guarantee. One asks why they have taken so long to propose this!
