Schwinn Tailwind electric bike review
Schwinn's Tailwind electric bike -- which has been available for just a few months -- has been sitting in our apartment since post CES, waiting for the New York weather to shape up enough for us to give it a fair spin. Well, it's been beautiful recently, so the pedal-assist bike has been taken for several spins on our backyard BMX trail to see what kind of dust we could raise together. The bike is a retro, hulking, 58 pound package, with a Toshiba SCiB Quick Charge Plug n' Drive (SCiB) battery saddled onto the back for about 30 miles of assistance. It's an expensive (about $3,200) piece of eco-friendly transportation, to be sure. So the questions are thus: what do we think about Schwinn'

Microsoft dropping three app limit from Windows 7
In some really encouraging news, Paul Thurrott as SuperSite for Windows is reporting that Microsoft isn't gonna put the arbitrary limit on its netbook-bound Windows 7 Starter Edition where users could only run three applications at a time. Now the only thing holding you back from simultaneous Skype, AIM, browsing, DVD playback, and Plants vs. Zombies will be the space on your screen and the specs in your portable. So how will they tempt users to upgrade to Home or Premium now? We'll just have to wait and see on that one.

SlingPlayer coming to Pre "at or near launch"?
webOS' web technology-based app architecture seems to become less and less of an issue by the day; most of our fears were allayed the moment we saw Classic break cover, and this is another strong sign that the Pre's going to be able to handle just about any multimedia-rich stuff we throw at it. Microsoft to drop 3-app limit on Win 7 Starter?
Microsoft will drop the controversial three-app limit on Windows 7 Starter Edition by the time it reaches shelves, an apparent scoop by long-time Microsoft observer Paul Thurrott indicates. Windows 7 branding leaks out
You didn't think Microsoft was going to ship Windows 7 with that same tired Vista-esque branding it's been using on the betas and RCs, did you? No way, man -- and if those crazy-cool wallpapers didn't prove it to you, the eager monkeys at MS China have thoughtfully posted up the new branding for your persual right now. We rather like it -- it conveys a welcoming sense of lightness that contrasts well with the battleship-heavy aesthetic of Vista, and that's pretty much exactly how Microsoft needs to position 7. AT&T's iPhone inventory dwindles, refurbs available
AT&T is reportedly selling out of its iPhone 3G inventories and does not plan on restocking, according to AppleInsider. Entelligence: Time for Microsoft to tell a better Zune tale
A lot's been made of the new Zune commercial that Microsoft aired recently. If you have haven't seen it, take a look. Now don't get me wrong. I think there's a lot that Microsoft can do with Zune, but this ad doesn't quite do it for me. What's wrong? First, it took a shot at Apple that felt silly -- after all, most consumers don't spend $30,000 to fill up their iPod (how much did it cost to fill yours?). Even if that's the case, buying a Zune Pass won't fill up an iPod either. GM touts new crash severity-predicting OnStar technology
OnStar has been working with the CDC for a few years now in an effort to deliver real-time crash information to first responders, and it looks like it has now finally come up with something that's ready to be put to use. That comes in the form of OnStar's new Injury Severity Prediction technology, which apparently takes some recent CDC findings into account, and uses a whole range of sensors in the vehicle (along with other crash data) to predict whether a crash is likely to have caused severe injury to the people in the vehicle. Eucalyptus: iPhone App zurückgewiesen

Orange sells the 1 millionth iPhone
Orange announced today that it sold its one millionth iPhone today. While that is a significant number for the nation of 60+million, there are lots of non Orange iPhones running around the country as well. Until the iPhone was launched in November of 2007, many unlocked iPhonees were floating around the country. Then, at the end of last year, France's competition council ruled that the iPhone must be carried by all vendors.
Apple doesn't break any of its iPhone numbers out by country, however, it is pretty clear that it has been a success internationally.

Sluggish iPhone sales could lead to stiff fines for Russian operators
See folks, this is the kind of mess you end up with after you gleefully do a deal with the devil. According to a roundup of reports over at Unwired View, three of Russia's major mobile operators could be looking at massive (we're talking hundreds of millions of bucks) fines if they can't sell through their iPhone allotments, and unless a significant market shift happens within the next few months, that situation seems remarkably unlikely. onOne iPhone app controls Canon DSLRs
onOne has submitted a unique new application to the App Store called DSLR Remote. The application will enable the iPhone and iPod Touch to remotely control a variety of Canon's digital SLR cameras. Jumsoft adds 100 new templates to Mail collection

Palm Pre available at a single store in NYC on launch day? Unlikely.
The Pre launch continues to befuddle -- sure, we finally know that June 6 is when the magic happens, but the mechanics of actually snagging Palm's baby on that day are still pretty mysterious, and that's leaving a lot of room open for misinformation. Today's cloudy tea-reading comes courtesy of an ever-changing list of stores on Sprint.com that are marked as having June 5 "special hours," which some are reading to mean that only those stores will be blessed. Possible solution for Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 update issue 'mdworker'
Some users have noticed that after the Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 update the mdworker process was consuming a rather large portion of their processing power--in some cases over 130 percent. The mdworker issue was noted in our second installment of "Readers Report" sent in by MacFixIt reader "Robert H." who noted that Time Machine was being affected by mdworker hanging. Rogers to sell HTC Dream, Magic for $199.99 on contract

We already knew MSI's Atom N280-powered Wind U123 netbook was grabbing placeholders at e-tailers across the web, but now we're assured that they're actually shipping to eager Americans. Japanese college giving away free iPhones, using them to track students' attendance
Nearly 500 students and faculty at Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan will receive free iPhones as part of the school's new Mobile & Net Society Education and Training program. The trial, which is set to begin this fall, will use the iPhone's built in GPS function to determine if the students are present, and use that information to replace traditional methods of taking attendance. The university's announced a deal with provider Softbank Mobile to provide the phones and basic services to all students and staff at the school for no charge. The school also plans on rolling out simple tests and homework assignments using the device. So is there an app for that, or what?

T-Mobile Österreich verrät das 32-GB-iPhone
T-Mobile hat sich aktuell ein wenig “verplappert”, indem man kurzfristig ein iPhone mit 32 GB Speicherkapazität unter den Vorankündigen auf der eigenen Homepage anpries. Salesforce.com erwirtschaftet Rekordumsatz im ersten Quartal
Salesforce.com hat im ersten Geschäftsquartal (bis 30. April) einen Rekordumsatz von 304,9 Millionen Dollar erwirtschaftet, was einem Plus von 23 Prozent gegenüber demselben Quartal des Vorjahres entspricht. Seinen Nettogewinn konnte das Unternehmen mit 18,4 Millionen Dollar oder 0,15 Dollar pro Aktie fast verdoppeln. Analysten hatten die Erlöse auf 0,11 Dollar je Aktie und die Einnahmen auf 304,7 Millionen Dollar geschätzt.

Gundam turns 30, celebrates with the most awesome statue ever

Onkyo's new Sotec DC204A3 netbook has 32GB SSD, no love for VGA or wired Ethernet
We like a good netbook that's so small it doesn't have room for any pesky, legacy inputs keeping you tethered to the wall (and thus The Man) -- but we're not sure we'd consign VGA and Ethernet to to the Closet of Obsoletion just yet. Onkyo seems to be opening the door, moving the two ports to a USB break-out box on its latest Sotec, the DC204A3. Apple hat einen weiteren Patentantrag eingereicht, diesmal möchte man gerne Sprachsteuerung für Fernbedienungen patentieren lassen. Diese Lösung wäre zum Beispiel für das Apple TV sinnvoll, Apple spricht aber eher von allgemeinen Möglichkeiten eines "Web TV"-Systems. Eine entsprechende Fernbedienung müsste laut Apple logischerweise mit einem Mikrofon versehen werden und könnte dann Sprachbefehle wie zum Beispiel "Öffne iTunes" ausführen

Lenovo meldet Jahresverlust von 188 Millionen Dollar

Sorge um GPS unbegründet
Wie wir berichteten, wurde in letzter Zeit die Funktionstüchtigkeit des GPS-Navigationssystems ab 2010 in Frage gestellt. Die zuständigen US-Behörden geben zu denken, dass man möglicherweise die benötigten Satelliten nicht rechtzeitig in der Erdumlaufbahn positionieren könnte.

Die Verkaufszahlen des iPhone lassen scheinbar sehr zu wünschen übrig, weshalb die drei größten russischen Mobilfunkprovider, die das iPhone in ihr Programm aufgenommen haben, vor einigen Problemen stehen. Geheimnisvoller Virus infiziert FBI
Das FBI und der US Marshals Service mussten gestern aufgrund eines mysteriösen Virenangriffs ihr Netzwerke herunterfahren, wie die Nachrichtenagentur Associated Press berichtet. Best Buy stores restricted to 4 Palm Pres for launch?
Best Buy stores are allegedly restricted to an initial distribution of 4,250 Palm Pres for the June 6th launch day, an unnamed source has told the Boy Genius Report. More iPhone3 predictions
John Gruber, is also predicting faster processor, more battery life, better camera and digital compass for the iPhone 3. While nothing new is noted on the iPhone, he ads another voice to the changes we've been hearing for awhile now. He also agrees that a major feature of the next touch devices from Apple will be the cameras.
Based on our information, we believe the next iPhone chip will be the S5PC100.(Google it).
He also thinks that 13-inch aluminum Macbooks will all now be called MacBook Pros (not Airs of course) and we'll see minor updates to the MacBook Pro line at WWDC.

Lenovo IdeaCentre A600 review roundup
We expected these to launch sometime in late March or early April, but it looks like Lenovo's IdeaCentre A600 is just now started to roll out, and along with it a handful of reviews. There seems to be a consensus that this all-in-one's a really good bang for the buck, especially with the TV tuner and somewhat useful remote / gyroscope controller / VoIP handset. Performance-wise, the Intel Core 2 Duo / ATI Mobility Radio HD3650 powered device is good but nothing worth writing home about. Boing Boing Gadgets suggests it won't match the latest iMac at gaming. While the body's well built and sturdy, the jury's still out on the glossy screen and that front "bump" of sorts

RIP, OQO: company discontinues repair service, disconnects phone lines
It wasn't without a lot of warning signs, but still we're sad to see the hammer drop. It looks like Model 2+ maker OQO has officially closed up shop, and according to a statement on the OQOTalk forums, it cannot offer any more repair or service support due to "financial constraints."
