RIAA keeps suing individuals despite promises
Despite announcing back in December that it would stop suing individual file sharers and use ISP monitoring instead, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is still filing such lawsuits, says a Tuesday TechDirt article. Kindle DX college plans revealed: only 300 students total
We knew the Kindle DX pilot programs at Arizona State, Case Western Reserve, Princeton, Reed, and Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia would be limited in number, but it sounds like students at those schools will have be extremely lucky or well-connected to get their hands on Amazon's latest -- according to Pace reps at today's launch event, each school will only receive around 50 Kindle DXs for the trial. Cellphone-only homes overtake landline homes
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday became the unusual source for a study which shows that cellphone-only homes now outnumber landline-only homes for the first time. New Test of SSD Models
Hardware.fr published an interesting update of its previous article, discussing further details on performance level, power consumption and other long-term usage factors for SSDs. The new Intel firmware prevents the lost of performance associated with aging SSD. They then compared it with the following SSD:

Apple granted patents for Dashboard, iPod nano, more
Apple has been granted 11 new patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office, all covering minor and/or existing technologies. These include the Mac OS X Dashboard, the design of the second-generation iPod nano, and an instant messaging-based file-sharing system. NVIDIA Tesla GPUs now shipping with Dell 'personal supercomputers'
Been itching to get your hands on a personal supercomputer, as NVIDIA's ad wizards put it? The company has just announced that its CUDA-based Tesla C1060 GPU is now available in Dell's Precision R5400, T5500 and T7500 workstations. And just to put things into perspective, NVIDIA points out that a Dell workstation rockin' a single Tesla C1060 has enough going on under the hood to power the control system for the European Extremely Large Telescope project ("the world's largest," apparently). News: iTunes price hikes lead to lower unit sales, revenues
Three weeks after the introduction of variable pricing on the iTunes Store, labels are seeing lower unit sales for both $.99 and $1.29 songs. Thought controlled orchestra makes its debut in Prague
The Multimodal Brain Orchestra had its world premiere last week in Prague, a city known for its big thinkers (and its Velvet Revolution). As a guy in black tie-and-tails led the traditional players through their arpeggios and glissandos, an "emotional conductor" led four performers fitted with G-Tec caps as they controlled both visuals and the sounds, frequencies, and volumes of various instruments. The controls were based on two of the effects that EEGs measure, SSVEP (or steady-state evoked potential) and the P300 signal. F-Secure: Windows 7 enthält alten Explorer-Fehler
Laut F-Secure hat es Microsoft versäumt, mit der Veröffentlichung des Release Candidate von Windows 7 einen alten Explorer-Fehler zu beheben. BOH puzzle game comes to Mac
Independent developer Simone Bevilacqua has launched a Mac version of the 2D action and exploration game BOH. Players must travel through trap-filled corridors, solving puzzles and defeating enemies in an attempt to find and conquer the Evil Masters. Neuer Entwickler-Build von Mac OS X 10.5.7
Nachdem allseits damit gerechnet wird, dass an diesem Freitag die Stunde von Mac OS X 10.5.7 schlagen wird, wurde nun noch ein weiterer Entwickler-Build ausgegeben. Dies berichtet zumindest World of Apple. Im Vergleich zur Vorgängerversion wurde lediglich ein Bug behoben, Safari 4 bleibt dafür weiterhin auf der Liste der bekannten Probleme. Schwierigkeiten gäbe es hier noch mit dem Installer, Safari 4 an sich laufe gut unter Mac OS X 10.5.7.

Balda kehrt in die Gewinnzone zurück
Balda hat im ersten Quartal 2009 wieder einen Gewinn erwirtschaftet. Inklusive aufgegebener Geschäftsbereiche betrug das Quartalsergebnis 5 Millionen Euro. Im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres stand noch ein Verlust von 500.000 Euro zu Buche. Das geht aus der heute veröffentlichten Bilanz des Handyzulieferers aus Bad Oeynhausen hervor.

Kunden verklagen Apple wegen defekter MagSafe-Netzteile
Wie AppleInsider berichtet, haben drei US-Verbraucher bei einem Bezirksgericht in Kalifornien eine Klage gegen Apple eingereicht. Tim Broad, Naotaka Kitagawa und Jesse Reisman werfen dem Computerhersteller vor, dass die MagSafe-Stromstecker, die das Unternehmen für seine Notebooks verwendet, nicht für den täglichen Gebrauch geeignet seien. Bell first to offer Palm Pre in Canada
Bell on Wednesday became the first Canadian carrier to say it would offer the Palm Pre. The phone is identical to the American version and has the same 3.1-inch multi-touch display, 3-megapixel camera, 3G over EVDO Revision A, GPS and Wi-Fi as the model destined for Sprint. No mention has been made as to whether the phone will include any special apps or other unique features for the carrier.

Der deutsche Multi-Touch-Screen-Zulieferer Balda hat für das erste Quartal 2009 wieder ein positives Geschäftsergebnis vorlegen können. Quantum dots make for more pleasing LED lamps
Many who grew up beneath a warm, inefficient halogen glow are having a hard time coming to grips with the stale, stiff, efficient illumination provided by CFL or LED bulbs. Two companies, Nexxus Lighting and QD Vision, have paired up to change that, with the former providing an 8 watt (75 watt equivalent) LED bulb, and the latter providing a thin film of quantum dots that can precisely control its color. Spekulationen um Windows-7-Version für ARM-Prozessoren
Warren East, CEO der ARM Holding, hat nun verkündet, Windows 7 werde auch auf ARM-Prozessoren laufen. Bei Microsoft wollte man sich dazu nicht äußern, lässt aber verlauten, dass Windows 7 auf mehr Plattformen laufen werde, als jede andere Windows-Version zuvor. Das Gerücht wiederholt sich zwar jedes Jahr, diesmal scheint aber etwas mehr dahinter zu sein: Nach einem aktuellen Jobinserat von Apple sollen die Mac-Hardware-Leute bei Apple einen WWAN-Spezialisten (WWAN = Wireless Netze wie WIMAX, UMTS, GPRS, GSM, HSDPA, «3G») suchen, der Macs mit 3G-WWAN-Karten testen soll. According to ifoAppleStore, Apple is now offering replacement iPhones to customers who bring in their water-damaged devices for only $199. The replacements are refurbished - but still a great deal compared to havign to buy a new one and extend your plan with AT&T.
It has been known for awhile that iPhones have the ability to detect if they've been damaged in water. There is a white disc in the headphone slot that will irreversibly change color when entering in contact with water.
Now, that isn't a death sentence to your wallet.

This isn't going to surprise anyone who has been anywhere near a digital video production environment, but those 'Laptop Hunters' ads are probably built on a Mac. The Filmmaker Sheila one seems especially ironic.
Wired reports that Microsoft's Ad agency, Crispin Porter + Bogusky is full of Macs including Bogusky himself who has two Macs on his desk (below). It is hard to prove that Macs are unneccesarily expensive when your agency won't even give them up. In other news, Microsoft laid of 3,000 people today.

10.5.7 hitting on Friday?
Mac|Life thinks so. Roberto Baldwin reports that "If you've been champing at the bit for the magic of 10.5.7, according to a super-secret Apple source, your champing can cease on Friday."
We're not sure we're champing at the bit, but we know that Apple doesn't usually release updates at the end of the week.
We also know they ramp up their part time workforce in their Austin support call center a week before updates and we have word that that has begun. But, we think the 10.5.7 update is likely to be closer to Monday. The other updates have historically been closer to the begining of the week:

Ibn Sina Robot wants a Facebook page, friends
Named for a medical doctor, the Ibn Sina Robot (seen to the right scowling at a meat-bag) wants to shed his scholarly ways and you know, hang out, make friends, have a bit of fun. Electronic Arts hat mit dem am 31. März dieses Jahres beendeten vierten Geschäftsquartal das Fiskaljahres 2009 einen Gesamtverlust von über einer Milliarde US-Dollar eingefahren. iPhone OS 3.0 to Loosen Restriction on the AppStore?
We have often criticized Apple about its weird selection criteria to accept or not an application on the AppStore. So far, any applications or games with some violence, slang or erotism are completely forbidden.Things might evolve with the release of iphone 3.0 as Apple should introduce within the new iTunes a parental system defining access into 4+, 9+, 12+ and 17+ categories. The lack of the 21+ category, not surprisingly, indicates that Apple does not plan to authorize porno applications on its AppStore. The team in charge of validating application submissions or not will then be able to be a bit more flexible as the classification into category will allow them to define contents. Adult-oriented applications are expected to generate substantial revenuers.

The large cash owned by Apple drives many analysts into crazy (or not) hypothesis. Yesterday, a rumor indicated that Apple might acquire Twitter, a rather surprising idea, as both companies do not have any obvious synergy.Now, another rumor indicates that Apple might be seriously considering Electronics Arts as a potential prey. RealD LP makes 3D projection a touch more portable
It may be stretching the definition of what we'd call "portable" around here by quite a large margin, but RealD's touting its latest creation as the world's first mobile, single-projector 3D solution. The RealD LP can blast video on screens up to 17 feet wide with a 150:1 contrast ratio -- glasses still required for the full effect, of course. Psystar denies accusations of document withholding
In response to Apple's accusations that Psystar is withholding information, the clone maker claims it has submitted any required documents. The company goes further and argues that Apple is not abiding by prior agreements. Samsung's PRAM chips hit mass production in June
Mark your calendars, memory enthusiasts, for the date you've all been waiting for. Samsung's phase change RAM will go into mass production starting in June. The PRAM chips -- not to be confused with paramter RAM, often what you curse / reset if you've got a Mac on the fritz -- can rewrite data without having to erase what's already on there first. We're not sure we're champing(nor are we certain of what that means), but we know that Apple doesn't usually release updates at the end of the week.
We also know they ramp up their part time workforce in their Austin support call center a week before updates and we have word that that has begun. But, we think the 10.5.7 update is likely to be closer to Monday.
We'll take Friday though.

Samsung's slim BD-P4600 Blu-ray player gets reviewed
Samsung's new BD-P4600 Blu-ray player certainly impresses on first glance and, according to the folks at CNET, it has quite a bit more going for it than just good looks, even if it's not entirely without its share of faults.
