DARPA working on "Silent Talk" telepathic communication for soldiers
We're no strangers to crazy DARPA projects around here, but this one especially strikes our fantastic fancy. The agency's researchers are currently undertaking a project -- called Silent Talk -- to "allow user-to-user communication on the battlefield without the use of vocalized speech through analysis of neural signals." That's right: they're talking about telepathy. Using an EEG to read brain waves, DARPA is going to attempt to analyze "pre-speech" thoughts, then transmit them to another person. They first plan to map people's EEG patterns to his / her individual words, then see if those patterns are

Why are Atom-based Hackintoshes seeing battery life changes in 10.5.7?
Sure, it could be nothing, and probably is. But what if all of these drastic changes we are seeing in Intel Atom-based Hackintoshes on 10.5.7 mean something about upcoming Apple hardware? Some points to consider:
10.5.1 - 10.5.6 there were little to no changes in Hackintoshes beyond what was stated in the update
10.5.7 updates bricked many Hackintoshes (it even gave a lot of real Macs some issues)
For those able to update without issue, some MSI users are reporting that battey life has been improved drastically

eSoles record foot pressure, not Inner City Pressure
The city is alive, the city is expanding, and we all know that living in the city can be demanding. But when lyrics from Jemaine and Bret just can't get you through the day, there's always eSoles -- er, something like that. HP recalls 70,000 notebook batteries
HP today issued a US-wide recall through the Consumer Product Safety Commission for 70,000 notebook batteries. Dell rolls out budget, eco-minded P2210, E190S, E170S monitors
We just caught sight of one low-cost Dell monitor headed for Hong Kong a few days ago, and it looks like the company has now rolled out another three for folks over here, including the widescreen P2210 model, and the old school E190S and E170S 4:3 models. Each of those meet the usual EPEAT Gold and Energy Star requirements, and Dell also goes one step further by using halogen-free laminates and a chassis composed of 25% post-consumer recycled plastics. Intel shows Larrabee die shot in Germany, speculators go berserk
It's been right around a century since Intel has provided any sort of hard evidence that Larrabee (a next-gen hybrid CPU / GPU) was more than a figment of anyone's imagination, but thanks to a die shot throw up Will Ferrell-style at the Visual Computing Institute of the Saarland University, we'd say the speculation is definitely back on. 70,000 HP laptop batteries recalled due to fire hazard
It's been quite awhile since we've seen a major recall surrounding volatile laptop batteries, but it looks as if HP is the company bringing the topic back to the forefront. Announced today, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Hewlett-Packard, has issued a voluntary recall of about 70,000 Li-ion batteries. Reportedly, these cells can "overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers," and so far, the firm and CPSC have received two separate reports of batteries that have overheated and ruptured, resulting in -- wait for it -- "flames / fire that caused minor property damage." Steve Jobs' Amazon account hacked? 20,000 items in 10 years?
According to Cult of Mac's Leander Kahny, a hacker by the name of “orin0co” had phished Steve Jobs' Amazon password using a fake Amazon page awhile ago and has been pulling data out of it for the last few years. He's recently been sending out information to journalists saying the highest bidder will get the pharmed information. He/she claims that the purchasing record includes 20,000 items over the last 10 years. Who says no one reads anymore?!
While, if true, this could be quite a crime. However, a screenshot and an email aren't really enough to believe this person yet. We'll keep an eyeon how this develops.

14-megapixel Sigma DP2 camera now officially available
A few retailers went ahead and put the Sigma DP2 up for pre-order back in March, but it looks like the camera is now finally officially available to own in the UK -- and, judging from some of those aforementioned retailers, at a few places in the US as well. MAGNUM outs 2-in-1 speakerphone/music player
YUBZ has released the MAGNUM, a two-in-one portable music player and mobile speaker phone. The Bluetooth device both puts out audio over A2DP and interrupts music to let users take incoming phone calls. His newest submarine -- called the Deep Flight Super Falcon -- has a set of wings with a span of 10 feet, giving the 20 foot vessel a distinctly bird-like appearance. OS X 10.5.7 Server update problems similar to client
Administrators running Mac OS X 10.5 Server have found that since the recent update they have had boot loops and blue screen that requires a hard reset of the hardware, similar to those experienced since the update to the client version of the OS. Because of this, if you are running the server version and are interested in updating, we recommend you only do this when you have physical access to the computer. The hard reset seems to clear the restart hangs, and the OS will update properly afterward.

Sony hat das Geschäftsjahr 2008 (bis 31. März) mit einem Fehlbetrag von 98,6 Milliarden Yen (758 Millionen Euro) abgeschlossen. Wild and slim PS3 redesign caught on camera?
Not that the original was any sort of tame, but some new, incredibly grainy leaked shots of a PS3 "slim," if they prove legitimate, point to a pretty wild redesign in store for the console in the near future -- not to mention what would be one of the smallest Blu-ray devices we've seen yet. Gestern hat Apple bekannt gegeben, dass die Eröffnungsrede zur diesjährigen Entwicklerkonferenz WWDC am 8. Juni von Apple-Vize Phil Schiller gehalten wird. Nun darf man sich berechtigt fragen, ob die bislang für diesen Termin erwartete Präsentation der nächsten iPhone-Generation tatsächlich durch Schiller und nicht durch Apple-Boss Steve Jobs erfolgt. Dieser nimmt derzeit eine krankheitsbedingte Auszeit und hat seine Rückkehr ins Unternehmen für Ende Juni angekündigt. Vier Millionen deutsche Haushalte nutzen Handys als Festnetzersatz
Rund vier Millionen Privathaushalte in Deutschland waren Anfang 2008 mit Mobiltelefonen ausgestattet, ohne zusätzlich über Festnetzanschlüsse zu verfügen. Das entspricht einem Anteil von neun Prozent aller deutschen Privathaushalte. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt das Statistische Bundesamt (Destatis) nach der Auswertung einer aktuellen Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichprobe. Erneut klagt ein Markeninhaber gegen Google Adwords
Wie Ars Technica berichtet, hat der Softwarehersteller Firepond bei einem Bezirksgericht in Texas eine Klage gegen Google eingereicht. Demnach verkauft der Suchanbieter über AdWords den eingetragenen Markennamen "Firepond" als Suchwort an Mitbewerber. Das Unternehmen sieht dadurch seine Markenrechte verletzt. Da Google Anzeigen auch auf Partner-Websites schaltet, klagt Firepond auch gegen YouTube, AOL, MySpace, Turner Broadcasting und InterActiveCorp.

Premiere sendet nur noch bis Ende Juni
Premiere wird sein Programm nur noch bis Ende Juni ausstrahlen. Ab dem 1. Juli kommt stattdessen ein neues Angebot unter dem Namen Sky. Das gab der Pay-TV-Sender heute in einer Presseerklärung bekannt. Außerdem plant das Unternehmen, den Firmennamen in Sky Deutschland AG zu ändern. Letzteres bedarf jedoch der Zustimmung der Aktionäre auf der nächsten Hauptversammlung.

Netbook-Nachfrage sinkt schon jetzt
Die plötzliche Nachfrage nach Laptops im Handtaschenformat erwies sich für viele PC-Hersteller als wahre Goldgrube. BT plant Abbau von bis zu 15.000 weiteren Arbeitsplätzen
Der britische Telekommunikationskonzern BT will im laufenden Geschäftsjahr bis zu 15.000 weitere Stellen streichen, was über zehn Prozent der Gesamtbelegschaft von 147.000 entspräche. Der Abbau soll jedoch nicht durch Entlassungen, sondern durch "natürliche Fluktuation" erfolgen. Im am 31. März abgelaufenen Fiskaljahr waren schon 15.000 Stellen weggefallen.

Apple Store USA verkauft iPhones
Wie AppleInsider entdeckt hat, können nun erneut iPhones in den USA direkt über Apples Online-Store bestellt werden und werden sogar zugeschickt. Bei Einführung des iPhone war das Bestellen über den Store zwar auch möglich, doch musste das Mobiltelefon dann in einem AT&T-Shop abgeholt werden. Ein AT&T-Vertrag muss allerdings nach wie vor abgeschlossen werden.

Die französische Regierung hat in den letzten Tagen ein Internetverbot für Raubkopierer vereinbart. Nutzer, die illegale Dateien aus dem Netz herunterladen sollen mit Verwarnungen und Zugangssperren bestraft werden. Versatel meldet leichten Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang
Versatel hat im ersten Quartal 2009 "bedingt durch die erwartungsgemäße Entwicklung im Privatkundensegment" einen leichten Umsatzrückgang von 1,7 Prozent auf 182,1 Millionen Euro hinnehmen müssen. Der bereinigte Gewinn vor Steuern, Zinsen und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) sank gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 3,6 Prozent auf 45,6 Millionen Euro. Sicherheitsexperte Ivan Krstić wechselt zu Apple
Ein weiterer namhafter Kopf wechselt zu Apple. Wer das Projekt "One Laptop Per Child" aufmerksamer verfolgt hat, wird wohl auch schon einmal auf den Namen Ivan Krstić gestoßen sein. AT&T to blame for Sling's Wifi-only usage
This probably won't come as a surprise to anyone but AT&T has told Engadget that the crippling of the new Slingbox software was due to AT&T's licensing terms. What terms? The terms they changed barely a month ago.

Slingplayer App now available
After all the hoopla, the Slingplayer is now available at the iTunes Store.
At $29.99, it represents a pretty serious commitment, but for many, having their television wherever they are (with WiFi) will be a small cost.
Also, Jailbreakers note that it should be easy to make a workaround on this that allows Slingplayer to run on 3G networks just like Skype and other VOIP applications do.
Update: We have confirmation that the jailbroken VoIPOver3G.app also allows SlingOver3G.

10.5.7 updates causing uncharacteristic problems
We've had a good 10.5.7 update experience (loads of snappiness™!) on our machines but the Internet is filling up with issues related to the massive install. MaxFixit goes over the major problems and the workarounds as per usual.
A good rule of thumb on this one is run a permissions repair before upgrading and the Combo updater seems a little safer.

Don't use Software Update. Instead, download the standalone "Combo" updater.

Boston Dynamics-designed RiSE V3 robot climbs poles, haunts dreams
The folks at Boston Dynamics have already made quite a name for themselves in the world of creepy robotics, but it looks like they're not ones to keep all their know-how to themselves, and they've now lent the University of Pennsylvania's Kod*lab a hand with this new RiSE V3 pole-climbing robot. That, as you've no doubt surmised, is a followup to RiSE V1 and V2, which were developed without the help of Boston Dynamics and were more suited to climbing flat surfaces than poles. It would have been difficult to organized 18 session dedicated to the future OS X version without releasing an official beta version, especially considering that the graphic API have been declared frozen. ATI/AMD Launches a 1 GHz Radeon HD 4890
we have already reported several times that one could easily overclock a Radeon HD 4890. Several manufacturers decided to offer an overclocked version of the Radeon HD 4890 with a GPU clocked at 1 GHz, for obvious marketing reasons. Of course, they would then benefit financially from such overclocked product. AMD quickly reacted to avoid loosing market share and officially announced its own 1 GHz Radeon HD 4890 model.
The only noticeable difference is the heatsink, with a different design and probably a better performance level. By releasing officially this card, ATi/AMD becomes the first GPU founder to reach/break the 1 GHz barrier on the electronic consumer market.

Details are rather scant on this little gem right now, but here's what we can tell you: you're looking at the world's first HD Radio portable device prototype, and it's slated to do just about exactly what you expect. HTC Snap snapped with larger battery, Sprint insignia, June 7th launch date?
Looks like HTC's giving Sprint its own version of the Snap, albeit with some slight modifications compared to the T-Mobile variant. According to the snapshots from PPCGeeks, all specs are pretty much identical except for a 1500mAH battery in place of the 800mAH, a revived Inner Circle, and a potentially nonexistent WiFi component. HifiMAN HM-801 PMP promises to make audiophiles happy, wallets hurt
Audiophiles can be a particular bunch when it comes to portable media players and, at the very least, can often be found carrying a not-so-discreet portable amp around with their PMP. This new HifiMAN HM-801 device aims to make their lives a tad easier, however, with it combining a Burr-Brown PCM1704 DAC and a OPA627 op-amp in a single modular unit that'll also let folks swap in their own amp of choice if they so desire. As you might expect, however, while it doesn't cut any corners when it comes to sound quality (including full support for FLAC and lossless WMA), it's pretty no frills otherwise, with no video support or other media-related features to speak of, and no internal storage of its own (you'll have to rely on SDHC cards). Apple hires former OLPC security director
Apple has hired the former director of security architecture at One Laptop per Child, Ivan Krstic, according to ZDNet. Krstic developed the Bitfrost security specification for the OLPC project, which he considers a foolproof system to protect against malware attacks. With the new position at Apple, Krstic will be working on core OS security.
