LG, Samsung have both sold over 20m touchscreen phones
Just a hunch, call us crazy, but these latest numbers from LG and Samsung seem to indicate that touchscreen phones are pretty popular -- both companies have sold over 20 million of 'em. That's somewhere around 1.6 million touchscreens a month for the past two years, and with new Samsung sets like the i7500 and LG's massive array of Windows Mobile devices set to hit this year, we doubt things will slow down anytime soon.[Via Boy Genius Repo

DisplayLink for Linux turns a humble wireless router into a beautiful PC
Our inner nerd was already completely thrilled at the release of DisplayLink driver source code for Linux, but he's positively frothing at this elegant implementation. Apple building home-based support network?
Apple has plans to complement its present helpdesk system with a host of "At Home" workers, ad listings and a recently exposed document are said to reveal. Developers get first look at Apple Push Notification service on iPhone OS 3.0 beta
Well, what do you know: it really does exist. Apple's at last showing off push notifications outside the clutches of Cupertino, with registered iPhone developers getting a special version of the Associated Press app to test out on their super fine iPhones running the latest and greatest iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5. Devs are instructed to let Apple know if they don't receive notifications from the app within 48 hours, and it sounds like this is an ideal setting to test out the server and make sure everything is humming along nicely before us proles start choking up the network with our inane Twitter noodlings.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]Filed under:

NEC makes world's first USB 3.0 controller
NEC claimed a minor record on Monday by becoming the first company to produce a hardware controller that supports the new USB 3.0 standard. The µPD720200 will let computers and other devices talk to USB 3.0 peripherals and theoretically allows for the peak 5Gbps transfers of the format, or roughly 10 times the speed of USB 2.0. iPhone apps: Pickin' Stix, iFlash Touch, Bed Bugs
Pickin' Stix ($1) is a adaptation of the classic Pick-Up-Sticks game for the iPhone and iPod touch. The game is played by using the touch screen to chose sticks from a pile. Players score points by grabbing sticks from the top of a pile and lose points for choosing ones that are underneath others. Microsoft officially gives up on Vista
Microsoft is giving up on Windows Vista:

Macs, iPods face disintegrating third quarter

T-Mobile USA delays Android 1.5 rollout by a few days
We knew it was too good to be true, eternal curmudgeonly pessimists that we are -- and sure enough, T-Mobile USA has put the kibosh on the start of its Android 1.5 rollout to G1 users. It seems that the build is still being "optimized" to "ensure optimal functionality and smooth delivery," which doesn't necessarily explain why T-Mobile UK users are already enjoying this stuff -- but then again, we're not the engineers and tech support folks that have to put up with the fallout from a failed launch. Slim PS3 update: mysterious Chinese firm issues a cease and desist... to Engadget
You know, one of these days, someone at one of these big companies is going to get this right. If you send a cease and desist about "leaked" photos of a supposed device, you're basically saying, "Hey guys, those pictures are real." Now, we can't tell you with 100 percent assurance that that's the case when it comes to those factory pics of rubber-gloved hands all over an apparently-new PS3 hardware design, but it doesn't help anyone's case when a Chinese company sends your Japanese wing a takedown notice. Keep in mind, since this thing isn't from Sony, we can't really be sure that it's the real deal, but we'll be honest -- things are starting to look mighty suspicious. NEC Japan announces its SuperSpeed USB 3.0 controller
Have you got that USB 3.0 cable on your hope chest, just killing time until your SuperSpeed dreams become a reality? Touchpanel Laboratories shows off touchscreen with 9-point detection
It's not exactly as impressive as a touch panel with unlimited points of input, but this new resistive touch panel with 9-point detection from Touchpanel Laboratories is still a cut above most and, better still, it seems to actually be ready to head into production. Unfortunately, details are otherwise a bit light, but the company does say that they're able to make panels ranging in size from four to 15 inches. RIM head dismisses non-phone devices

UMID mbook M1 spotted in black, keyboard and all
We've been seeing black models of UMID's mbook M1 since way back when -- albeit with a rather eye-burning, white keyboard -- though none of the non-white models have ever seemed to be available. Regardless, a black version, with a new, black keyboard has been spotted, and we have to say it's much-improved, looks-wise. This new version is probably that revised casing we'd heard was on the way after some build-quality issues were reported back in February. It has been awhile since we've run antivirus software on our Macs. Most Mac antivirus software has traditionally been buggy or slowed our machines to a crawl. That's not to say that we're complacent on security issues. In fact, we have ClamAV sitting in our applications folder 'just in case'. We're probably not alone in this sense.

BenQ offers budget P&S cams with wide video
BenQ has started the week with the appearance of two compact cameras with slight edges over other competing models in the class. Both the 10-megapixel C1020 and 12-megapixel C1220 switch out the typical 4:3 ratio, 640x480 video recording mode for a 16:9 720x400 format better-suited to modern TVs. Video: Kondo bot acquires iPod touch headgear
If you're a Kondo KHR-2HV hobbyist and the usual choices for headgear all seem a little too safe, you might want to check out this next item. YouTube user 'ogutti' has posted a video of the robot he built using an iPod touch for its control unit and user interface. Details are skint, but apparently the device uses the Robochan app to program and play back the robot's various movements. At the very least, this thing does have a rather cute animated visage -- although it does seem a little too top heavy for any serious tournament fighting. Verizon HP Mini 1151HR hands-on and impressions
We got our hands on the Verizon HP Mini 1000 (or, as it's more properly known in this form, the 1151NR) recently, and we've taken the little guy -- and its built-in 3G card -- for a spin. The Mini itself has a standard enough spec sheet: a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB HDD, two USB 2.0 ports, 802.11b/g, SD slot, and Windows XP, and there's no special Verizon branding to be found anywhere on the unit. We can't really take issue with the choice of machine, which is a fairly well-loved netbook with generally pretty solid performance. The important thing here, of course, is the addition of the big V's hardwired 3G. Did we fall in love with it? Does it make sense in the face of products like

More Pentax K-7 details, pictures leak out ahead of launch

AT&T considering cheaper iPhone plans?

Echoing an earlier rumor, Businessweek is now saying that AT&T is ready to reduce prices on iPhones. They see the long-rumored $99 price point for iPhones and lower tiered wireless plans. The cost will be made up for by the iPhone's cheaper hardware, resulting in a lower subsidy by Apple.
New devices may cost as much as one-third less to produce than earlier versions, Doherty says. The cost of touchscreens, the most expensive component, has declined by more than 30% in the past year, estimates Michael Cote, an analyst at consultant Cote Collaborative Wireless Strategy.

Boeing's been busy with the high-tech death lately -- just a week after the company announced the Phantom Ray fighter UAV, it's back in the news with a high-powered airborne microwave weapon designed to knock out enemy electronics. Après OCZ, c'est au tour de Supertalent de proposer une mise à jour pour ses SSD acceptant la fonction TRIM. Cette fonction est capitale dans le fonctionnement de ces disques. Der Hamburgische Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Johannes Caspar hat vergangenen Freitag sowohl der Google Germany GmbH als auch der Google Inc. mit Sitz in den USA ein Schreiben zugestellt, in dem detailliert die datenschutzrechtlichen Anforderungen für die Erhebung und Nutzung von Daten im Rahmen des von Google durchgeführten Projekts Street View aufgelistet werden. Google wird darin aufgefordert, die Einhaltung der datenschutzrechtlichen Bedingungen bis Mittwoch, den 20. Mai 2009, 10 Uhr schriftlich zu garantieren.

Android build for upcoming HTC Hero has revamped interface, social networking?
This one's a bit of a mystery, but it's certainly a tantalizing one: Haykuro of xdadevelopers fame has posted video of what purports to be the Android build off of HTC's upcoming Hero device. What's special about it is a reworked interface, which shows a lot of polish from icons to built-in apps to general interface elements and maybe just a bit of TouchFLO flair. Infineon beschließt Ausgabe von Wandelanleihen
Der Infineon-Vorstand hat mit Zustimmung des Aufsichtsrats die Ausgabe von "garantierten, nachrangigen Wandelschuldverschreibungen" mit einem Gesamtnennbetrag von rund 203 Millionen Euro beschlossen. Dell: Windows 7 deutlich teurer als Vista
Ein Dell-Manager hat in einem Interview geäußert, dass Windows 7 deutlich teurer sein wird als vorausgegangene Betriebssysteme von Microsoft. Walmart to carry Palm Pre, expand electronics
Walmart is undergoing a significant expansion of its electronics section that will include the Palm Pre, the retailer says. Although recent leaks had so far only pointed to a Best Buy offering of the smartphone outside of Sprint's own stores, Walmart tells the WSJ that it expects to carry the phone "soon." Toshiba verklagt Imation und andere DVD-R-Hersteller wegen Patentverletzungen
Wie Toshiba bekannt gab, hat man gegen zahlreiche DVD-R-Hersteller in den USA Klage eingereicht. Spieletest: Plants vs. Zombies - Zeitfresser-Alarm!
Die Grafik ist veraltet, das Spielprinzip nicht wirklich neu und es gibt Anspielungen auf Michael Jackson - eigentlich genug Gründe, einen großen Bogen um Plants vs. Zombies zu machen. Ex-IBM-Manager soll Sony wieder auf Kurs bringen
Sony hat den langjährigen IBM-Topmanager George Bailey angestellt. Er soll als "Chief Transformation Officer" einen Wandel des krisengeschüttelten Elektronikkonzerns herbeiführen oder zumindest moderieren. Bailey tritt seinen Posten am 1. Juni an. Er berichtet direkt an CEO Howard Stringer. Seine Abteilung, die sich "Transformation Management Office" nennt, wird vor allem mit zwei Sparten von Sony zusammenarbeiten: "Consumer Products" sowie "Networked Products and Services".

Intel Larrabee Postponed till 2010
We have been hearing about it for years now, as the revolution in graphic display, in other words Intel Larrabee. The goal is to eliminate discrete GPU and to replace them by numerous x86 cores working in parallel and able to manage 3D rendering while being also perfect hardware tools to GPGPU. If Intel is often talking about Larrabee, so far we did not really witness any hardware demonstration of a future product. It usually comes as rumors than true details. Larrabee would be based on Pentium II cores associated by 8 to 32 units, with a high clock speed thanks to 32 or 45 nm engraving. If recycling old technology to make it new, it does not imply it will be easy as Intel postponed Larrabee till mid-2010 while it was supposed to be released at the end of the current year. the reason might be linked to the complexity of the system .Indeed, Intel does not only need to develop the hardware, but alos hte software part able to benefit from such dedicated multi core units. MacBook Pro 17": Shortage or Problems?
We have received several reports from users, but also from resellers, indicating that the MacBook Pro 17'' while being officially released, since months, is not available. In one of those messages, an certified Apple reseller indicated that despite having dozen of units already ordered, the did not receive any shipment from the usual european distributors (ingram, tech data, Actebis). Even on the Apple Store, the MBP 17" is available with some delay.
So, there are two options: either Apple is having problems to get all components involved in manufacturing this high-end MBP, or there is an issue with quality, manufacturing or a component that made the company deciding to delay all shipments till the problem is fixed.

Leaked Windows 7 box images real?
CentrumXP has released supposed leaked images of the Windows 7 retail boxes, according to ars technica. The boxes appear to be a combination of the XP and vista boxes, an indication of Microsoft's aim to make Windows 7 a culmination of the best parts of its predecessors.

GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition Can Be Pre-Ordered in USA
Expected for June, the NVidia GeForce GTX 285 is now available in pre-order from the Provantage website in USA.
Its price tag is most likely designed to directly compete with the Radeon HD 4870: 436.66 USD. Interestingly, the Mac Edition is "only" 60 USD more expensive than the PC version (from the same website). This will be a cheaper alternative to the Mac Edition Radeon HD 4870. However, as we reported it earlier, the PC version of the Radeon HD 4890 might be a perfect alternative too.

Installing a Radeon HD 48x0 PC Version in a Mac Pro Has Never Been So Easy
Netkas continued to work on the installation of Radeon PC version in a Mac Pro. He successfully developed a single extension which will work as a EFI BIOS. When the system is loading, it will read this extension on the Radeon PC card in order to identify its specifications (model, GPU frequency, VRAM, etc.), then it will activate the card on the Mac Pro. It should make it possible in theory to use any Radeon HD 4870, 4870X2, 4890, etc. You can download such extension from the following URL: http://rapidshare.de/files/47173322/ATY_Init.kext.tar.bz2.html
However, despite all his hard work, some points remains not fully fixed:
Your display will remain black till the Mac and its system did not fully load the extension.

iPhone erobert japanische Uni

Psystar Forces to Give Apple Access to its Financial Records
Today, Psystar will have to give Apple and its lawyers access to its financial records as decided by the judge after a request from Apple. Apple is of course expecting a lot from this investigation as it will give information related to Psystar sales, volumes, but also the investors behind Psystar. What do we have here?
Hardcore Apple UI designer, and multiple patent holder Sascha Hoehne, uploaded this image to yFrog using his Twitter account from his iPhone in Germany. The image was also taken from an iPhone on April 24th 2009 and looks like the back of some sort of small device. There is nothing else to indicate what this might be.

Intel presentation promises Medfield-based smartphones by 2011
We've been hearing about Intel's Medfield processor for some time now, but much of the talk so far has been about it being an Atom-replacement for netbooks and MIDs. A seemingly recent Intel presentation obtained by the folks at UMPC Portal is now shedding a bit more light on the matter, however, and it's looking like smartphones could actually be at the heart of Intel's long-term plans.
