Woz: Jobs doesn't sound sick
According to Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs sounds like he's doing well, according to the WSJ.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said Steve Jobs sounds “healthy, energetic” a month before the CEO is expected to return to the company. On the sidelines of the All Things D conference, Mr. Wozniak said Mr. Jobs “doesn’t sound like he’s sick,” nor did he seem to be in a health crisis. Mr. Wozniak said, however, he has never directly asked Mr. Jobs how he is.
The statement was made at the AllThingsD conference in New York. Jobs is expected to resume his role as CEO in a month.

Intel and Microsoft have divided up the market with view to the release of Windows 7
In addition to the fact that they rule the largest market in the world of data-processing, Intel and Microsoft share the practice of deciding the final specifications of the machines that will use their material or their OS.
According to Digitimes, the two giants have already decided the specifications ready for the release of Windows 7. Only mini equipped portables with screens of a maximum size of 10,2" will be entitled to the cheap base version of Windows 7. Beyond that, they will have to use a more advanced and more expensive version. It is the same with the Intel processors, the exact version that can be used is according to the size of the screen, as with Windows XP that can be installed only on certain machines that has a given specifications of power, with a well sized hard disc and memory.

Music Balloon: it's like a sound emitting afro for your iPod
Okay, so maybe this isn't actually for your iPod, per se, but Idea International's colorful audio afros just seem to click with Apple's vivid line of shuffles and nanos. Equipped with a 3.5-millimeter jack, a built-in battery good for around five hours and what appears to be a bendable cable (you know, for draping it over your handlebars), the Music Balloon could actually be mistaken for a plug-in microphone. Looks like Chris' hatred wasn't totally unfounded. We just got our hands on a Google Ion -- which as you can tell is a spitting image of the HTC Magic -- complete with 30 days' worth of T-Mobile service on an included SIM card. It's not a public release model, but seems fully capable. SATA 3.0 spec now official
The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) consortium on Tuesday released the Serial ATA Revision 3.0 specification, which doubles the transfer speeds of the current SATA II interface to 6Gbps and adds multimedia application support. Then you might want to follow the lead of SparkFun's Nate, who took the device and turned it into a decidedly non-exercise minded wireless key fob -- or iFob, as Nate has dubbed it. North Carolina votes in favor of Apple handout
The state House of North Carolina has voted 81 to 31 for a bill handing out tax breaks to Apple, the Associated Press writes. Although the results are only preliminary, they may suggest the outcome of the final vote, scheduled to be held before Wednesday's end. If successful, the bill will divert $46 million of taxpayers' money towards a 10-year break for Apple.

Linpus set to debut first Moblin 2.0 distribution for end users
While we've been getting a pretty good look at Moblin 2.0 as of late, we haven't been hearing much about the end-user distributions that'll actually be winding up on netbooks and nettops as the Linux-based OS moves out of beta. Linpus now looks set to change that, however, with it announcing that it'll be showing off a Moblin version of its Linpus Linux Lite OS at Computex next week, which is apparently the first such end-user distribution to emerge. Google Latitude coming to iPhone...in a web browser
Google Latitude is an application that has been promised for the iPhone for awhile now. It allows you to broadcast your GPS location and at the same time allows you to follow the locations of your friends. Obviously, there is both concern for abuse as well as excitement over this ability. Google has released versions for the Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Mobile and, of course, Android.

Google I/O attendees getting free unlocked HTC Magic with T-Mobile 3G
In case you needed yet another reason to nerd out with Android developers for a couple days in scenic San Francisco, here's a doozy: every attendee is getting hooked up with an unlocked HTC Magic in black plus 30 days of voice and 3G data service. While the carrier isn't specified, we certainly wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being T-Mobile, which would make this an AWS version of the phone -- and a probable precursor to the presumed myTouch 3G release (or whatever they end up calling it) later this year. Microsoft, always big on little details
Microsoft has unleashed a barrage of PR related to the long-rumored Zune HD, which, as they say, has "everything to go head to head with the iPod touch" (do not ask me why they can't just release something that stands on its own and does not have to be a me-too).
I won't comment on the device itself, but a detail caught my eyes in their press material, ditto this picture (click to enlarge it):

RBC calls for cheaper iPhone as repackaged 3G
Long-standing rumors of a cheaper iPhone could see the persistence of the 8GB iPhone 3G, argues RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky. Nintendo: we're not making a phone, we swear
Despite a statement back in April from prez Satoru Iwata that the company would make a phone if it could avoid monthly subscription costs, it looks like Nintendo will not be getting into the cell biz any time soon. Reggie Fils-Aime, president and CFO of Nintendo of America just put the kibosh on all that with a statement to the New York Times, saying, "Telephony is not in our wheelhouse. Apple readying less costly MacBook Air with 3G?
Apple may push the cost of the MacBook Air downwards while also extending its feature set, a rumor asserted on Wednesday. Unnamed sources for SiliconRumors claim that an entry-level model will push the price down to between $1,300 and $1,500, or at least $300 less than the current model. Whether this would be a smaller model or just a price reduction isn't certain.

At Mobile World Congress, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega had mentioned to us that AT&T was "better off" than Verizon thanks to 3GPP Release 7's capabilities to extend existing HSPA infrastructure through to 21Mbps and beyond by using the wonders of HSPA+ before the company would need to bite the bullet and get moving on LTE. SATA Revision 3.0 specification completed and released
Well, it sure took 'em long enough. In August of last year, the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) got us all hot and bothered when it introduced the SATA Revision 3.0 specification to double transfer speeds to 6Gbps. Finder not calculating folder sizes
To organize files and folders on your disk, you may choose to have the Finder calculate the size of folders on your disk. This can be done by either getting info on a particular folder, or by going to the "Show View Options" in the "View" menu and choosing "Calculate all sizes" with a particular folder open. Sometimes this process can take a long time, especially when using the view options but also in the Get Info window, which is has been frustrating to several users.

Silicon Rumors is reporting that the next MacBook Airs will finally have 3G cards built in. This follows evidence from Apple's Job postings looking for laptop 3G QA engineers which were quickly pulled after being exposed. Silicon Rumors also thinks that the new MacBook Airs will drop significantly in price which might quiet those looking for an Apple Netbook.

AT&T announces speed increases, less suckage
The iPhone's sole US carrier, AT&T today made some pretty significant announcements on their plans for the rest of 2009 and beyond. They will continue to roll out 3G to more markets (20), upgrade to 7.2 Mbs equipment and begin deployment of 4G LTE networks in 2011. AT&T is also doubling its spectrum and adding more towers to cover more areas including the inside of buildings. AT&T's 2009 initiatives also include:

Smart Q7 reviewed, deemed fairly useful for fairly basic tasks
The folks over at UMPC Portal have gotten a hold of the SmartQ 7 internet tablet for a nice, long review. The MID, which has a 667MHz Samsung ARM S3C6410 CPU, 128MB of RAM, and 1GB of flash memory, seems to handle its basic tasks -- MP3 playback, light browsing, PDF viewing, and viewing / editing documents fairly well. It also apparently has a pretty great battery life, and can stay juiced in standby mode for over three days. The tablet (which is somewhat reminiscent of the yet to appear in the wild CrunchPad) does, however, have plenty of drawbacks -- a touchscree

AT&T announces 7.2Mbps HSPA rollout plans
We knew AT&T had an HSPA upgrade in the works, and now the company has announced its plans, with initial rollout beginning later this year and reaching completion in 2011. That will overlap only slightly with LTE, which AT&T plans to put into trials in 2010 and start melting our faces in 2011. The HSPA upgrade takes the network from 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps in theoretical speed, and AT&T also plans to nearly double the amount of wireless spectrum it dedicates to 3G in metropolitan areas -- which should come as a relief to city dwellers who haven't managed more than a couple minutes of sustained conversation since mid-2008. Apple today announced its traditional Back to School Sale which entitles students to a free iPod Touch (or nano/shuffle) with the purchase of a new Mac after rebate. Contrary to reports, it doesn't appear that iPhones are going to be part of the plan. This year's program runs through September 8th, 2009 - which is when the new stuff comes.

Video: LG demos ultra-bright Full HD 3D monitor
LG's certainly been known to dabble in the third-dimension, and while we're still waiting for it to ship those "one or two" 3D TVs this year, at least we're confident that it's getting closer. Over in South Korea, the company has showcased a new Full HD (1080p) 3D monitor with what it says is the highest brightness level of any competing panel. Sadly, viewers are still required to don glasses when ingesting the action, but this take on the tech enables said eyewear to be somewhat thinner and less cumbersome. Apple this morning quietly updated the plastic white MacBook to give it specifications that are at times better than the current aluminum model. Für rund 50 Euro haben die Pentium E der 2000er-Serie in den vergangenen beiden Jahren für ordentlich Trubel im Einsteiger-Segment gesorgt. Anscheinend plant Intel die Ära diese Prozessoren in 65-nm-Fertigung nicht einfach so zu beenden, so dass ein Update auf die 45-nm-Fertigung erfolgt.

Angeblich Urlaubssperre bei T-Mobile ab 15. Juni
Schon einmal konnte ein Blick auf die Urlaubspläne Anhaltspunkte geben, wann Apple ein neues iPhone auf den Markt bringen wird. Eventuell kommt auf diesem Wege auch in diesem Jahr der Termin heraus. Psystar ist pleite und verzögert die Klage von Apple gegen sich
Der Mac-Klon-Hertsteller Psystar hat beim Bundesgericht in Florida Insolvenz angemeldet. Dadurch kommt das von Apple begonnenne Verfahren gegen Psystar kurzfristig zum Stillstand, weil die angemeldete Insolvenz erstmal jegliche rechtlichen Schritte auf Eis legen. Ein Spiel erregt besonders die Gemüter der Fans: Zenonia. Um den Hype nachzuvollziehen, der um das Rollenspiel entstanden ist, muss man einen Blick auf das Genre werfen: Im Gegensatz zu Actiontiteln, Rennspielen und anderen Genres sind gute Rollenspiele rar. The company JMicron is currently offering a controller dedicated to entry-level SSD. Its low price makes it the best solution, however its lack of support for cache memory strongly affects overall performance when dealing with numerous simultaneous tasks, especially with MLC chips in writing mode. As usual, Barefeats posted first tests of the new (and expensive) professional NVidia graphic card, aka Quadro FX 4800.
To make it short, this card brings a real advantage with Aperture, with gain of 10 to 15% over all other tested graphic cards with Mac OS X. When challenged with other applications, it delivers similar results than a GeForce 8800 GT or a ATI Radeon HD 4870 depending if the software is mostly using Open GL instructions or not. Europe Commission Wants a Pan European iTunes Store
When Apple launched its iTunes Store in Europe, the company was most likely not expecting to have to face so many specific local laws and had to adjust its services based on them. It has created many issues on which we already reported, such as the price difference between the UK itunes Store and the other EU iTunes Store. Things might become easier in the future as European Institutions wants to make digital music a product able to cross internal EU borders the same way as any other product. In a document published online, Apple indicates it may start selling digital music via an unified Pan European iTunes Store, however, the company will have to obtain licensing rights and/or agreements from ALL publishers and music royalty collecting societies belonging to the 27 nations forming EU. We sort of knew it was coming but we were kinda hoping against hope Microsoft would just kill it before it got started. They didn't and today, as of the AllThingsD conference, it is official. New Canon EOS 5D Mark II firmware to add manual exposure control for video recording
Hey, it's no autofocus, but Canon's sent word that a free firmware update is coming for the EOS 5D Mark II that'll enable manual exposure control while shooting video, including ISO and aperture settings and shutter speed. Excited? Yeah, us too. No word on what else the update might entail, but it looks like we won't have to wait long either, as the company's saying to expect the download sometime in early June.

ZuneHD Announced: Specs, pain, embarrassment
We sort of knew it was coming but we were kinda hoping against hope Microsoft would just kill it before it got started. They didn't and today, as of the AllThingsD conference, it is official. The specs: 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 OLED capacitive touchscreen display, built-in HD Radio receiver, HD output (utilizing a new dock -- not on-board) and it looks like we thought (unfortunately).

Chill Pill provides speakers for portable devices

Apple to pioneer pan-EU music licensing?
According to Distorted Loop, Apple is seeking a pan-EU deal for licensing and distributing music through the iTunes Music Store. Rather than deal with each country individually, Apple is seeking to create one iTunes Zone for all of the countries within the EU.
The news is revealed within a series of documents published by the European Union today, following last year’s historic European meeting on pan-European music licensing rights. SiriusXM Radio comes to iPhone
Seeking Alpha is reporting that Sirius XM radio will now be coming to the iPhoneover IP. While evidence is still a bit thin, they've noticed that Reach MD Medical Radio channel 160 has gone to the iTunes App Store and many more should follow.
Rather than create one Sirius app for the iPhone, each individual channel can create their own app for specific listening of iPhone/iPod touch owners. This App-per-channel approach is somewhat like Scrollmotion's app-per-book approach to books. From Seeking Alpha:

iRiver P35 headed to the US this fall
It certainly doesn't seem to have been in a rush to bring it to these shores, but iriver has now finally announced (in teaser form) that its P35 PMP will indeed be getting an official US release this fall. That will version will obviously ditch the DMB TV found in its Korean counterpart, but it should be otherwise identical, including up to 16GB of storage (plus an SDHC card slot), a 4.3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, a full-fledged web browser (on the WiFi version, at least), a promised 16 hours of battery life (or seven for video) and, of course, iriver's trademark SPINN controls. What to do if your Time Capsule starts disconnecting frequently and becomes unresponsive
As I wrote in an earlier post, I have been happily using a Time Capsule (500GB first-generation model) for a few month, and I'm really happy with it. I use it hooked to a DSL modem in bridge mode, and it serves as router for my home network, which has a mix of machines with fixed and DHCP-attributed IPs.
It has always worked reliably, both on the wireless connections and on the wired ones.
Until a while ago when it started acting strange. First, I would get disconnected from the Internet, and when I tried to open the TC in Airport Utility, it would hang trying to load the TC's configuration, and the only solution would be to unplug it from the main. Pressing the "reset" button would do nothing. At other times, I could still access the Web, but the Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule would fail, and, again, I couldn't access the configuration for the TC.
