Dell Mini 10 TV tuner option coming this summer, Mini 10v goes hands-on
While Dell originally mentioned a TV tuner option back when it launched the Mini 10 in January, it's still working on bringing the feature to market. The latest news is that the configuration will tack roughly $50 onto the price, includes an external antenna (which is only required in low-signal situations), and should be available "this summer." The couple of channels we saw in action seemed plenty good on the quality front, but nothing groundbreaking. Meanwhile, we also got a look at the new Mini 10v, which swaps HDMI for VGA, lacks the flush "glass" styling of the Mini 10 display, and bounces over to the Atom N270 proces

Apple releases Safari 4 beta Security Update
Hot on the heels of the 10.5.7 update to OSX, Apple has also released a Security Update to Safari 4 beta. At least, that's what a tech note at Apple's kbase says, but I don't see it popping up in my Software Update and the download page to which the tech note points does not have anything about it

D-Link routers get added CAPTCHA protection
D-Link has been known to roll out some fairly significant firmware updates for its routers in the past, and while this latest won't exactly breath new life into your old clunker, it does at least break a tiny bit of new ground in its own little way. While the company is obviously quick to point out that its routers are already some of the most secure around, it apparently thought they could still do with a bit of added protection, so it's now added some annoying but reliable CAPTCHA tests to a number of its existing models. Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.5.7 and Security Updates
As we announced it earlier, Mac OS X 10.5.7 was almost ready to be released, and Apple just did it:
The 10.5.7 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.
Apple also released Safari 3.2.3 for Mac OS X (distinct versions for Leopard and tiger) and Windows (This update is recommended for all Safari users and includes the latest security updates.) as well as the second security update of the year for both Leopard and Tiger (2009-002: Security Update 2009-002 is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X. Previous security updates have been incorporated into this security update.).
As usual with such OS update, you better clone/backup your system and data before installing Mac

Apple updates Mac OS X to 10.5.7
The long-awaited and rumored 10.5.7 Mac OS X update is finally here, and it weighs a hefty 442MB for the standalone point updater and 729MB (!) for the combo updater.

iDive 1.9 overhauls Capture module
Aquafadas has released v1.9 of its video cataloging application, iDive. The program is designed to organize videos through tagging aspects of them; clips can subsequently be found using the People Places Events palette. Version 1.9 incorporates the ability to drop frames between clips, as well as specify what camcorders should do after recording. Turbo.264 hardware acceleration is new as well.

Of all of the Roomba mods we've seen, this is definitely one of them. Just in time to celebrate its entry into the Robot Hall Of Fame, the heads at iRobot have mashed up the happy-go-lucky autonomous vacuum with an old inkjet printer, creating a device that can not only indulge in something called Rangoli, but look great doing it. Apple wartet nicht nur mit einer neuen Version von Leopard auf, sondern veröffentlicht noch zwei weitere Aktualisierungen. 88% of movie sales still physical: NPD study
Researchers NPD Group today said that 88% of the money consumers spend on home entertainment goes towards purchasing and renting movies on DVD and Blu-ray discs. Of the $25 each US consumer spends on average in a given month, 63 percent was found to be spent on DVD purchases, 7 percent on Blu-ray discs, and 18% went towards renting DVD and Blu-ray movies. Options for running Windows on your Mac
We're in no doubt that Mac OS X is by far the best operating system out there and we love it tremendously; however, we admit that it is fun to at least mess with other OS platforms, if for nothing more than geeky interest. For decades people have loved to install multiple operating systems on their computers, on external hard drives, thumbdrives, and whatever else may please the curious geek mind, such as putting Linux on iPods. This has been true with Macintoshes as well, with PowerPC Linux distributions being made available for Apple hardware, the "BeOS" was able to run on some models, and a small company called "Connectix" made the Virtual PC package that was one of the first ways to run Windows on the Mac through emulation (SoftWindows was another option, though less versatile).

Sony develops "world's smallest" HD camera module
The tiny HD hits keep coming today -- first we saw eASIC's $5 integrated H.264 codec chip, and now Sony's crowing about the new MCB1172 HD camera module it claims is the "world's smallest." There's some pretty impressive tech packed into that tiny package: you're looking at an 8.3 megapixel sensor that can shoot 720p/30 video with image stabilization, face detection, high-ISO mode, and 120fps slow motion. France greenlights altered 3-strikes piracy law
The French National Assembly today approved a modified version of the three-strikes law meant to combat online piracy. Following an earlier rejection of an initial version, the government body voted 296-233 in favor of the bill, which would send two warnings to users caught allegedly trading illegally copied media and require that Internet providers disconnect users after a third offense.

Microsoft denies Twitter-sourced Zune rumors
The future of the Zune continues to be awfully cloudy: although the Twitter account @officethemovie was directly linked from Microsoft's Office 2010 promo site earlier today, company spokesperson Brian Seitz just pinged us to say that those Zune rumors posted to the account weren't exactly on the up-and-up: That account is bunk. WiFi-only Slingplayer app coming to iPhone for $30
Word on the street is that the much-anticipated Slingplayer.app will be hitting the App Storeanyminutenow. This follows numerous setbacks and reported rejections. The app will cost a hefty $29.99 and will unofficially work with all Slingplayers. This contradicts Slings own website which said it would only work for newer models.
Additionally, the app will only work over Wifi, which eliminates much of the utility of having a Slingbox in your pocket. Sling had originally said that their app would work over Wifi, 3G and even EDGE. No doubt, AT&T and other carriers had a hand in this decision.

German researchers show off steering wheel-mounted OLED
We've already seen OLED displays that promise to squeeze into a rearview mirror and other parts of a vehicle, and it looks like Germany's CARO research association has now found yet another place to stick one: right in the middle of the steering wheel. my life with an iPhone
So, I've been living with an iPhone since it launched here in France, in late November 2007. That's more or less 1 1/2 years with Apple's little wonder. And, yes, I'm still sticking to the old original "2.5G" model.
So, what's my feeling after 18 month of iPhone?
Well, first, I had been waiting for years for a phone that would do basic stuff correctly: sync my contacts and events on the Mac. I had a series of Samsung and SonyEricsson phones, and they all did Bluetooth sync, but there was always a catch: you could only sync 125 contacts (Samsung) or the fields in the address book could only hold 127 characters, meaning the sync would mess every contact that had longer fields in the Mac's Address Book. Etc. And the iPhone has this right: it just syncs and all is the same on my various Macs and on my iPhone (and, icing on the cake, I use MobileMe so it's all done wirelessly in the background more on that later).
So, the iPhone scores on that point.

Mac Chromium early builds available for public consumption
If you don't mind a few bugs, lack of Flash and a lot of speed, you may want to give the new Google Chrome (Chromium) builds a try. The repository is being updated several times a day.
First impressions:
It doesn't come with Flash but Flash can be installed and will be in future versions
It is really fast. Even with several tabs going, it is Safari 4 type fast.
Each tab is a seperate process (see below). Each one takes 1GB of Virtual Memory but less than 100MB of real RAM.
It doesn't run 64-Bit in Snow Leopard yet - 32-Bit. It also doesn't run on PowerPC, the first Mac browser, not to do so.

Sony X-series OLED Walkman priced, hitting UK tomorrow
We don't see an official press release yet but Pocket-lint and other UK sites are claiming that Sony's OLED Walkman will hit the UK high streets starting tomorrow. The hotly anticipated X-series Walkman will be priced at £209 for the 16GB model or £279 for the 32GB model. We'd translate those numbers to US dollars but we don't want to scare the natives with the UK markup for consumer electronics. Sanyo's LP-WXU700 projector is first to stream HD video over 802.11n WiFi
True, Sanyo's LP-WXU700 is limited to a WXGA (1280 x 800) pixel image. But it's still the world's first to transmit that video over 802.11b/g/n (draft 2.0). Grabbing wireless video off your Vista PC is a snap thanks to the projector's Windows Embedded CE 6.0 software with Video Streaming Function that links back to Vista's Network Projector Function. Spec-wise we're looking at a 0.74-inch 3LCD panel capable of projecting a 100-inch image at a distance of 2.5 to 4-meters at 3,800 lumens with a 500:1 contrast ratio. AMD kann Intel Marktanteile abgewinnen
Wie Cnet mit Verweis auf eine Analyse von IDC berichtet, konnte AMD im abgelaufenen Quartal seinen Marktanteil nach über einem Jahr wieder steigern. Insgesamt schrumpfte der PC-Markt erneut gegenüber dem vorherigen Quartal. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal ging der Absatz um laut IDC um 13 Prozent zurück. Nortel rutscht tiefer in die Verlustzone
Der angeschlagene Telekommunikationsausrüster Nortel ist aufgrund der Wirtschaftskrise im ersten Fiskalquartal 2009 noch tiefer in die roten Zahlen gerutscht. Did you ever spot a really boss concept and think, "Hey! I could totally cobble this into reality"? No? Well, Zach did. He saw a concept pair of pants with a functioning keyboard, and proceeded to make his very own. Essentially, he chopped a keyboard in half, then used a laser cutter and some good old fashioned sewing to get the keys into the trousers. Because the board had been cut in half, only the left side of it still functions, but, as you'll see from the video after the break, that's good enough for a game of Tetris. Microsoft: iPod kostet 30.000 Dollar
Bis nach Europa hat es der von Microsoft mit viel Aufwand auf den Markt geworfene Zune am Ende ja doch nicht geschafft, in den USA versucht der Softwaregigant allerdings weiterhin tapfer Marktanteile im Musikplayer-Segment zu erobern. Ein aktueller Werbespot (Video nach dem Klick) rechnet uns vor, dass der iPod ein vielfaches mehr als der Microsoft Zune kostet - nämlich 30.000 Dollar, um ihn komplett mit Musik aus dem iTunes Store zu befüllen. Mac: iPhone-Klingeltöne per Drag'n'Drop
Einfacher als mit dem kleinen Mac-Programm iRingtones von Cocoamug kann das Erstellen von Klingeltönen für das iPhone nicht sein. Irgend eine Audiodatei oder auch ein Musiktitel direkt aus iTunes wird auf das Programm gezogen, der gewünschte Ausschnitt festgelegt und per Mausklick landet der neue Klingelton im entsprechenden Verzeichnis in iTunes. Die kostenlose Trialversion erlaubt das Erstellen von Klingeltönen mit eingebauter Warteschleife, wer in die Massenproduktion übergehen will, muss 6,90 Euro für eine Lizenz berappen.

Virgin Media tests the Internet at 200 Mbits/s
Whereas ADSL has reached its limit and that the fiberoptic network is slowly being installed, the cable returns in force in the United Kingdom. The internet operator Virgin Media announced that they have started a pilot experiment with 100 subscribers with a Internet connection running at 200 Mbits/s; this is the double the speed that fiberoptic promises in its initial configuration. This data flow is allowed by the latest standard: Docsis 3.
The greatest interest with this standard is to allow the cable operator already having a network to make large economies while avoiding having to use the fiberoptics until it is fully installed. It remains to be seen if this experiment will meet the expectations of Virgin and whether it will be possible to deploy it en masse.

The specification of the next iPhone ?
An unconfirmed source has put online on a Chinese forum the specifications of the next iPhone.
It would have a CPU running at 600 MHz (against 400 currently), 256 MB of RAM (against 128), 32 GB of flash memory, a 3,2 MPixels autofocus camera, a compass, FM radio… It would preserve the same design and same dimensions. Such an iPhone would be a notable evolution, without being revolution, which is by certain aspects a good idea.
The iPhone is indeed the only mobile to our knowledge to improve with time thanks to the evolution of its OS ensuring that former purchasers a greater life span of their devices and the pleasure of rediscovering it each year.

Yep, it looks like Verizon's subsidized HP Mini 1000 will indeed launch on May 17th -- and if these leaked screenshots are any indication, launch pricing will be set at $199 after a $50 rebate two-year contract and $299 after rebate for a one-year commitment. (The prices are marked "at launch ONLY" so we're guessing they'll go up sometime after.) As for specs, it's nothing special, just a 80GB Atom machine with 1GB of RAM and a WWAN card, so really, we'd much rather take the subsidy on a USB 3G stick and spread the mobile broadband love to all our machines than be stuck with an underpowered netbook, but hey -- it's your call. Grand Central wird in OS X 10.6 dazu benutzt, Rechenaufgaben aufzuteilen und auf die zur Verfügung stehenden Kerne zu verteilen. Apple hat diese API im Build 10A354 vereinfacht und Entwicklern mitgeteilt, es seien keine weiteren API-Änderungen geplant.

Microsoft's latest ad: iTunes and the iPod are crazy expensive
We've been wondering when we'd see the next Laptop Hunters ad from Microsoft, but it looks like the company's throwing a change-up: its latest 30-second spot features Wes Moss, Certified Financial Planner, explaining that iTunes "costs a lot" while Zune Pass "costs a little." The argument, of course, is that at a buck a song (or more), filling up your iPod costs way more than the $15 / month cost of the Zune subscription service, but we've got a feeling that Wes just won't convince as many people as Lauren and Giampaulo -- while we certainly think Zune Pass is a great deal, especially with the

Hold the phone: T-Mobile G1 v2 to really be the Samsung Bigfoot?
Well well -- it looks like whatever Android handset Motorola's cooking up might not be the T-Mobile G1 v2 after all. Unwired View just published this shot of a Samsung Bigfoot with a slider QWERTY, and we've got to say, it looks a hell of a lot more like the device in that leaked T-Mobile roadmap than the rendered Moto unit. Not only that, but there's also an early spec sheet and another image of a candybar set called the Spica -- apart from the slider, Bigfoot and Spica are nearly identical lower-end versions of the I7500, with three-inch screens, three megapixel cameras, and Android 2.0 "Donut" preloaded.Filed under: Cellphones
