BGR Reviews the Pre: All good, except keyboard
It is nice to see that the iPhone will have some solid competition in the smartphone space. Boy Genius loved just about everything about the Pre except the keyboard. Strange, because that is one of the main differentiators between the Pre and the iPhone. You'd think Palm would go out of its way to knock that one out of the park.
Overall, they were impressed: "The OS is great. There’s no ifs ands or buts; it’s really refreshing to see something that’s brand new with a UI unlike anything else out there." Jon Rubinstein & Co should be congratulated for building a platform fro scratch.
Honestly, we might not go out and buy one, but we're itching to get our hands on one just to check out the OS.

Space-In-Time disk space monitoring app enters beta
TRI-EDRE has released the first public beta of Space-In-Time. The program is used to monitor a computer's disk data in order to understand which folders and files are taking up the most space. Space-In-Time records the space usage for each folder, while keeping a log of file values and totals.

Staff briefings ongoing for wireless iTunes video?
Apple has confirmed intentions to allow direct purchase of iTunes videos from an iPhone, sources close to the company's training programs say. Originally a blogger is said to have discovered the option's existence by accident, though users of the iPhone 3.0 beta can now gain a glimpse through a custom link. Graphics and downloads in the early browser are currently broken.

Volleyball-playing robot has Mac mini brain, heart of a champion
Volleyball-playing robots may only come around every ten years or so, but they at least bring along some fairly big improvements when they do show up -- like actual mobility, in this case. Of course, "volleyball-playing" is still a bit of a stretch. The bot is actually designed to be more of a training aid, with it making use of a range of sensors, built-in GPS, a compass, and an iSight camera (all linked to a Mac mini) to track down balls and set them up for spiking drills. Playfirst announces three new game titles
PlayFirst plans to release three new games later this year, Passport to Perfume, Gemini Lost, and Avenue Flo. Beta versions of Passport to Perfume and Gemini Lost have already been released, and the Avenue Flo beta will be released in June.

Review: PocketGuitar for iPhone
PocketGuitar, which mimics a guitar fretboard and provided various types of guitar sounds, takes the metaphor a little too literally. Because of the size of the iPhone's screen, you can only access a few frets at a time, and you can't slide up and down the fretboard gracefully. Guitar players will find this app frustrating.

Guitar Hero 5 hits the streets September 1st, one week before the Fab Four
Yeah, you heard it right: another volume of Guitar Hero -- the game you either love to hate or love to love -- is making its debut on September 1st. This one, Guitar Hero 5, promises a bunch of features that are party friendly, such as the ability to play through sets with no players actively playing, allowing anyone to join in at any time -- because we all know how many ragers are built around GH, right? Additional matte-finish iPhone images surface
An additional image has surfaced that allegedly shows the back case of an iPhone with a matte finish. The photo, posted on MacRumors, appears to match an earlier leak indicating a new finish for an unconfirmed revision. The form factor does not appear to be changed from the existing 3G model. It is unknown if the company has chosen a different material, possibly metal, to construct the back case.

Final Cut Studio 3.0, new Server in testing

White House, Pentagon announce plans for new cybersecurity positions
It's just been a few short months since a proposed bill called for the creation of a National Cybersecurity Advisor, but it looks like there's now not one but two new positions in the offing, with both the Pentagon and President Obama himself announcing plans for some newly elevated offices charged with keeping the nation's networks secure. While a specific "Cybersecurity Czar" hasn't yet been named, the White House position will apparently be a member of both the National Security Council and National Economic Council and, in addition to coordinating U.S. response in the event of a major attack, the office will also be tasked with protecting privacy and civil

Verizon finally releasing BlackBerry Storm update this weekend
An incredible way to start the weekend, Storm owners: Verizon is finally pulling the trigger on a firmware update, which will be available to all comers starting on Sunday at 3PM Eastern time. If that's too much trouble, you'll alternatively be able to sit back, chill, and wait for the over-the-air version to hit, which should follow on at 10PM. A company from California, Quo, has outlined plans to sell Mac clones from a Los Angeles storefront, according to CNET News. The brick-and-mortar location sets the operation apart from other clone makers that rely solely on sales from the Internet. The owners are reportedly aware of the potential legal troubles their endeavor is likely to bring.

ECS plans a trio of netbooks, duo of all-in-one PCs for Computex

Steve Ballmer has made a demostration to Engadget of a prototype of the Zune HD.
The MP3 player seems of very good value with its OLED screen that gives a marvellous display of a Pixar video, certainly in a move not designed to be friendly to Steve Jobs.

The Palm Pre can synchronise with iTunes
So some see in Palm Pré an apparatus able to compete with the iPhone, while others think rightly that this is the last hope of Palm not to sink. This is undoubtedly the reason that pushes Jon Rubinstein, previously at Apple, to take such care with the release of this telephone. Proof that Palm is aiming at the Apple customers is the latest news that the Pre can be synchronised with iTunes.
It will be able to recover there the music (without DRM), the photographs and the vidéos (without DRM). We are curious to know if this compatibility will be tolerated for long by Apple especially if the Pre one manages to take a bite of the iPhone market.

Homebrew PC features 2MHz hand-wrapped CPU
BMOW (Big Mess O' Wires) is a DIY PC, complete with a hand built 8-bit CPU. Built by a game developer named Steve Chamberlain, this bad boy operates at 2MHz and sports 512KB memory, two-color video output, and a 512 x 480 display. According to Wired, the hand-wrapped CPU is closest in design to the MOS Technology 6502 processor (previously seen in such classic machines as the Apple II, Commodore 64, and some early Atari game consoles), and it took him about a year and a half from design to finish. The only Steve Jobs patent that hasn't become a reality...yet
Harry McCracken breaks down the wide range of patents that Steve Jobs has been a part of. Interestingly, most of them were published as new products came to market. All except one:
Jobs mentioned to the NYTimes that at one time Apple had been working on a "Safari pad" but it just didn't make sense to bring it to the market (at that time). The work they did on that product eventually ended up being the basis for the iPhone. Jobs was obviously very emotionally tied to that project and the idea of a Safari Pad.
We still like the idea of this little guy being released later this year.

Pixel Qi late yesterday demonstrated its unique 3-in-1 hybrid display, known as the 3qi. The technology works as a traditional, backlit LCD but can switch its backlight off and convert to an e-paper mode. Gizmodo-Readakteur Brian Lam konnte nach der Vorstellung des neuen Zune HD einige Minuten mit dem portablen Multimedia-Gerät von Microsoft verbringen und zeigt sich extrem begeistert. 13″ MacBook Unibody: Seit April mit besseren Displays
Seit Ende April liefert Apple in seinen 13″ Unibody-MacBooks offenbar auch ein besseres internes Display aus. Es soll dem im Macbook Air nicht unähnlich sein bzw. sich sogar um das gleiche Modell handeln.

Bessere Lüftersteuerung im MacBook Pro
Für die SMC Firmware im MacBook Pro 15" und 17" hat Apple einen Updater auf Version 1.3 veröffentlicht. Das Update verbessert das Lüfterverhalten, wenn der Rechner mit hoher Prozessorauslastung betrieben wird. Der Updater wird in dem Ordner /Programme/Dienstprogramme installiert und startet automatisch. Das Update kann auf Apples Support-Seiten oder über die Software Aktualisierung heruntergeladen werden.

Dell meldet Gewinneinbruch von 63 Prozent
Dell hat im ersten Geschäftsquartal 2010 (bis 1. Mai) einen Nettogewinn von 290 Millionen Dollar erwirtschaftet. Das entspricht einem Rückgang von 63 Prozent gegenüber den 784 Millionen Dollar im ersten Fiskalquartal 2009. Der Gewinn je Aktie sank von 0,38 Dollar auf 0,15 Dollar. Zune HD besser als iPod touch?
Nach der ersten Präsentation des neuen Zune HD schreiben die US-Seiten Gizmodo und Engadget (hier mit Galerie) überraschend Lobeshymnen auf den Microsoft-Konkurrenten zum iPod touch - bzw. auf das, was sie bislang von dem Player zu sehen bekamen.
Wie sich der neue Zune in der freien Wildbahn und damit im direkten Konkurrenzkampf zum Touch schlägt, bleibt - das ist unsere Meinung - allerdings abzuwarten. Microsoft steht gegen jahrelange Erfahrung und ein perfekt abgestimmtes System aus Soft- und Hardware an, und das wie immer ohne tatsächliche Innovation.
Das seit September letzten Jahres verfügbare aktuelle iPod touch-Modell war Vorbild, dessen Funktionen wurden von Microsoft zum Teil auch deutlich erweitert oder verbessert. Allerdings steht das Apple-Update für den Touch wie gewohnt im Herbst, also vor der breiten Markteinführung des Zune HD ins Haus und könnte den gestrigen Microsoft-S

HP Mini 110 netbook gets examined on video
We've already gotten a decent look at HP's new Mini 110 courtesy of the usual carefully chosen press shots, but the folks at Tech65.org recently had a chance to get up close with the netbook, and they've now thankfully provided a thorough hands-on video for folks considering it or those simply curious. While there's not exactly a whole lot of surprises, we do get a good look at the new, slightly recessed "anti-glare" display, along with the revised trackpad, the new LCD-intergrated speakers, and the rearranged port and card slots. SSD PATA available from Supertalent
Supertalent has annonced the release of 2,5" SSD discs equipped with a PATA interface. These discs will have rather average performances, 80 MB/s in reading and 40 MB/s in writing and will range in capacities from 16 to 128 GB.
However, if their price is kept low, they could find their place in older Macs (the Cube?) which would give them a whiplash in performance and silence. One could even consider in installing one in an Apple TV so that it ceases playing the role of a radiator during the summer.

Hulu desktop: So that's why they keep trying to kill Boxee and Plex
Hulu has spent the past few months in a cat and mouse game wth Boxee and Plex trying to block them from showing their content.. The Mac Media Centers keep finding a way around Hulu's defenses to show Hulu content. Then Hulu blocks them again. etc etc.
We never understood why Hulu was so against these 3rd parties showing their content (and their commercials). Now it all comes to light.
Hulu just put out their own desktop app. It works with the Apple remote (and others) and only on Intel Macs over 2.0GHz with a 2MB Internet connection. Warning, there are some bugs and it isn't as easy to close as it should be. Download here.

First SATA III Peripherals in the Pipeline
If the SATA III format is now frozen and defined, there are currently no products available on the market with such format. Things might quickly changed following the recent announcement by Marvel of a new chip. Once installed on a motherboard, it will provide support for 4 SATA III ports in addition to 6 SATA II ports.If the SATA format was more than enough for disc-based HDs, the development of SSDs and their rocketing reading and writing speed (around 300 MB/s) push the SATA II format close to saturation. Thankfully, the new SATA III will offer 600 MB/s, and should allow computers to work with SSD without being slow down by the limitations of the bandwidth. But, if SSD manufactures keep racing to always look for the fastest models, transfer speed might reach 400 MB/s or more. It is only a matter of price of components and efficiency of controllers that are currently limiting performance level to 300 MB/s one should not forget that most 2.5" HD hardly reach 60 MB/s

Potential Problems with Radeon HD 4870/90: Additional Information
Last week we were reporting about the potential issue of the voltage regulator modules installed installed on Radeon HD 4870 and 4890. In summary, some benchmark procedures bypass all protections installed by the manufacturer and automatically push all components to their limits. As a consequence, the GPU automatically switch off after some time to preserve its integrity. AMD was not expecting such procedures and did not install any additional systems to block such usage as no games nor GPGPU are currently requiring so much computing power.Such benchmarking procedures might push manufacturers in the future to select component, especially VRM, with a higher quality level to ensure that future GPGPU requirements do not put graphic cards and GPU on their knees.

AT&T / Cingular class action gets go ahead from federal court
This one goes back a little ways, but a U.S. District Court in Seattle has now given the go ahead to a class action lawsuit brought by former AT&T Wireless subscribers, who have complained that their service went downhill after the company was bought by Cingular and ultimately became the new AT&T. They're also not too happy that they were forced to pay to get new Cingular phones, and they're now asking that AT&T pay back all those extra charges, plus the usual damages, of course. For its part, AT&T isn't saying anything more than that it "respectfully" disagrees with

Microsoft touts 30 million Xbox 360s sold, 20 million Xbox LIVE members
Sony may have been the first to claim the 20 million users number, but most will no doubt agree that Microsoft has a considerably stronger claim to that title, as their just-announced 20 million users apparently includes only "active members," and doesn't include users that have simply signed up to use their online forums.
