AT&T slowly begins rollout of CruiseCast in-car satellite TV service
It's a bit off its target pace, but it looks like AT&T is now finally starting to roll out its CruiseCast in-car satellite TV / radio service, however slowly. According to OrbitCast, AT&T is now working with "small groups" of car audio specialists and distributors to get the service into the hands of a "few dozen customers" in order to test the service in advance of the full roll-out, which is now somewhat ambitiously promised for early June. In case you missed the announcement back at CES, the service itself consists of 22 live TV channels and 20 radio stations, plus all the necessary, non-user-installable hardware, which wil

Apple to get over 600% more floor space at CES this year
The Consumer Electronics Association, which hosts CES in Las Vegas every January, said Thursday that the trade show will expand its Apple section from 4,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet. Frankly, 4,000 square feet isn't really that much to begin with (imagine a 50x80 foot room), there is still cause for some interest.
You'll recall that the reason Apple bowed out of future Macworld Expos was that it wasn't going to be part of big tradeshows anymore and it was going to deal with its customers at its stores and during its developer conferences. That being said, we're 100% positive that this news will have some people wondering if Apple will make an appearance at CES.

onOne's DSLR Remote for iPhone fires your Canon from afar
Sure, EOS Utility will let you control the Canon DSLR of your choice from the comfort of your PC, but what if you want to add one more enticing level of indirection to the equation? Well, sport, for that, you'll need a little app for the iPhone from onOne called DSLR Remote, which connects via WiFi to a utility on your computer -- which is in turn cabled to your camera. It's not on the App Store just yet, but there'll be two versions available: Professional, for an introductory price of $9.99, which allows you to control a host of camera settings, and the $1.99 Lite, which simply lets you fire the shutter. The coolest part might be Live View compatibility, which would make a great poor man's security camera (if you can call a

AT&T may charge less for LIMITED iPhone data plans
Ralph de la Vega, the head of AT&T's mobility and consumer business, told Rueters that AT&T is indeed considering a discounted iPhone rate plan. However, this discounted plan will only be for limited, tiered data plans and would cause iPhone users to be conscientious of how much data they were using.
The executive said it would be costly for AT&T to cut the price of its unlimited Web surfing service. The minimum plan for iPhone users is $70 a month, which includes unlimited Web surfing and a certain amount of voice calls.

Jury awards i4i $200 million in damages in Microsoft patent suit
It's not quite on the level of some of Microsoft's past patent showdowns, but a Texas federal jury found yesterday that the company should pay a still hefty $200 million in damages to Canadian software firm i4i Ltd for some supposed wrong doing. That company had alleged that Microsoft knowingly infringed on one of its patents in both Word and Vista, which apparently concerned "manipulating a document's content and architecture separately." For its part, Microsoft unsurprisingly begs to differ, and says that "the evidence clearly demonstrated that we do not infringe and that the i4i patent is invalid," adding that it will, of course, "ask the court to overturn the verdict."Filed under:

Sensor-laden kokoro adjusts playlist to match the rhythm of your heart
We've got to say, we're guessing both Survivor and Prince would approve here, as this is easily one of the most impressive uses of a heart rate sensor yet. Anaid Gomez Ortigoza, a bright young lad at NYU, has whipped up what he's calling kokoro, which translates into "the heart of things" in Japanese. Put as simply as possible, this prototype project allows for iPod playlists to be shuffled depending on one's current heart rate; if your heart is pumping some kind of fierce, the device will likely cue up a little M83, and if you're at rest, you just might get to hear a smooth jam from the likes of Copeland. Rather than funneling you into a single straight path, Sonic’s stages were often both long and tall, with multiple routes to the exit, and different sorts of obstacles in your way. One route would take Sonic through a loop-de-loop—previously…

Sharp's MIDtastic RD-PM10 electronic dictionary
Sure, it's no Zaurus, but Sharp's new RD-PM10 certainly is a looker. It packs a 4.3-inch WQVGA screen, QWERTY keyboard and 8GB of storage into a pretty delightful form factor, and while it's only designed for light e-dictionary and media playback duties, with Windows CE 5.0 as the backbone, we could imagine it doing a whole lot more with a bit of extra oomph under the hood. There's a microSD slot for expansion, pretty great codec support, and a 360,000 KRW (about $288 US) list price.[Via

In disguise he looks like a particularly non-ergonomic way to control your computer, but in just a few seconds he transforms into well, a pretty sad, skinny looking rendition of the Decepticon command base. HTC Touch Pro battery goes rogue, lights up an otherwise fine pair of pants
Just a note to everyone who carries around a spare smartphone Li-ion in their rear pocket: buy thicker underwear. The scene you see above was all caused by an obviously volatile HTC Touch Pro battery, one that the pants-wearer claims is an authentic HTC cell and not a cheap-o alternative from eBay. As the story goes, a foul odor led him to a laundry pile, where he uncovered eight moist socks, a torched battery and a ruined pair of pants. Look, we're glad this guy's okay and all, but seriously, can you imagine what this testy little thing would've done when tossed into the dryer? It's a blessing in disguise, kiddo.[Via

Apple Tablet/MediaPad not until 2010?
These kind of stories are always a downer. SAI reports that Apple isn't likely to build the much talked about MediaPad/Tablet device until 2010. All hope isn't lost for 2009 however. They source (often incorrect) Gene Munster:
"We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently, but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10," Munster says.
With the Android-based Archos 3G media tablet with WWAN only months away, we'd love to see Apple in this space ASAPbut as SAI says, it probably doesn't matter. How long were there MP3 players (including Archos) before the iPod

While we hear Punch Out!! is quite good, it's safe to say the Wii hasn't exactly been flooded with great titles lately. The most enjoyable part of the system still comes from the Virtual Console and all the classic titles that populate it, and soon you'll be able to pair those games with the classic controllers they were written for thanks to Komodo's Retro Adapter. Sure, we've seen some rather unsophisticated ways of making N64 controllers work in the past, and Nintendo itself hopped on the retro bandwagon with a first-party Wii

Tutorial: File sharing in OS X
In order to share files on a network in the past "classic" Mac operating system, you had to access and set up items in several locations. First, you needed to enable file sharing in one location, then add users in another location, and finally navigate to individual folders in the finder to set up sharing for those locations. Because of the multiple steps for sharing items, people could lose track of the shared folders, and the permissions that each user had for the specific share point.
As with many aspects of the system, Apple has gone through extensive efforts to refine this process in OS X, and make file sharing straightforward and simple. They have done a fairly good job at it, both in the default setup for file sharing and in allowing you to customize the file-sharing setup on your computer, by making sharing both configurable through one interface and also intuitive.

It’s the high-speed shooting features that really set the Exilim EX-FC100 from other point-and-shoot cameras. Otherwise, it's a very capable device, offering all of the features you’d expect in a compact, pocket-size camera.

Laptops may be the form factor of choice for kid-friendly computers these days, but there's still some room out there for good 'ol desktops, and TG Sambo looks to have produced a pretty nifty one with its new LLUON Kidscom PC. While there's not much in the way of specific details, the system appears to based on the company's more adult-minded LLUON A1 all-in-one PC, with it adding a touchscreen to the mix, along with the company's own "TG Kids Browser" interface that promises to allow access to a range of educational materials. Sony's 400-disc BDP-CX7000ES Blu-ray Mega Changer reportedly coming soon
There's no doubt that Sony has a 400-disc Blu-ray Mega Changer on the cooker -- heck, we saw the thing last year at CEDIA -- but up until now, there's been no indication of its nearness to market. According to a vague Swiss product page and a report from Sony Insider, however, the launch date is indeed drawing near. Music downloads coming to PSN, PSP?
Ready for some more PSP rumors? CNET's got it on good word that Sony's been talking to some of the big recording labels about putting their music on the PlayStation Network for download, specifically with the PSP in mind. It really isn't much of a stretch, especially when you think about the service's ever-growing library of movies and TV shows. And of course, Sony itself is one of the four largest music companies in the world, so if it really had to go on its own for a bit, it should be able to muster a few good artists. It's just a rumor for now, but this definitely feels like the natural progression for PSN and the company's do-everything device. You know what would go great with a PSP music d

When Dell said its Mini 10 TV tuner was coming this summer, well, we didn't expect it to be so soon. The company's dropped us a line to say we should expect to see it as a customization option starting sometime today, presumably along with the external antenna that's needed when the signal's low. The cost is an extra $50 and it'll net you over-the-air ATSC -- that's the new HD format, for those who haven't been keeping track. Additionally, a seventh color, passion purple, is being added to the library, and if your heart's set on cherry red, you'll be happy to know they're now a part of the (PRODUCT) RED portfolio, meaning Dell will donate $5 to the Global Fund with each purchase.
