Microsoft condemned to pay 200 M$ for violating a GPL license

The company i4i holding a licence (in the form GPL) on the XML language succeeded in in an action against Microsoft. Microsoft had largely used XML in its software such as Word, but had also decided to modify it "to go further". However, in this case they should have informed the owner of the licence and even publicized the modifications that they refused to make.  The court recognized them guilty and condemned them to pay 200 million dollars of damages to i4i.

US Army equipping all Windows PCs with Vista by end of 2009

While a good number of its machines are already running the OS -- about 13 percent at this point -- the United States Army has mandated that before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, 2009 that all of its Windows-powered computers must switch from XP to Vista, presumably and hopefully with Service Pack 2. Beliebtheit unter Studenten wächst weiter

Apples große Anstrengungen, unter den Studenten und auf dem Bildungsmarkt zu punkten, scheinen sich auszuzahlen. So belegt die jüngste Studie der University of Virginia, dass 99 Prozent der Erstsemester-Studenten einen Laptop besitzen. Immerhin 37 Prozent davon arbeiten mit einem Mac. Seit 2003 konnte Apple demnach seinen Anteil stetig steigern und schafft es möglicherweise schon bald, mit dem PC gleichauf zu ziehen.

Looks like North Korea -- a place not known for its liberal attitudes toward communication of information -- may slowly be taking another baby step toward the 21st century. Trimble Nomad handheld gets Android 1.5 upgrade

It's not exactly one of the first places you'd expect to see Cupcake popping up, but SDG Systems has now announced that the Android update (or a developer build of it, specifically) is now available on its Trimble Nomad rugged handheld.
