Microbot controls swam of bacteria, puts all flea circuses to shame
Sylvain Martel, what hast thou sown? The director of the NanoRobotics Laboratory at the École Polytechnique de Montréal this week is presenting his latest microbot at ICRA in Japan, and it's got a pretty crazy trick. The solar panel-equipped device sizes up to about 300 x 300 microns, and using a sensor to detect nearby pH levels, it's been shown as capable of controlling a swarm of 3,000 bacteria using electromagnetic pulses. Sure, Martel suggests there'll be some eventual medical uses for the technology, but we'd be lying if we said the video demonstration didn't give us the willies. New Article: How to Silence a Radeon HD 4870/4890
As usual, we always try to make hte most powerfull graphic card compatible with our Mac as silent as the entire Mac Pro itself, in order to continue enjoying low noise computing while having such 3D beast inside. We have repalced the original cooling system with a ventirad Artic Cooling Twin Turbo, then modified a bit the default procedure to further improve its efficiency.
We also tested this new system after overcocking the Radeon HD 4790 in a Mac Pro.

Crimson Red Dell XPS 16 in the wild?
So about that apparently canned crimson red Dell XPS 16 laptop. We received a handful of pics from a tipster who claims to have gotten one about a month ago when he returned his other, decided un-red model for a screen replacement. We don't want to say this is 100 percent legit without holding it in our hands, but if this is the beauty we once had the option to purchase, Dell, please, bring crimson back.

Windows Mobile 6.5 fertiggestellt
Wie Microsoft über Twitter bekannt gegeben hat, habe man Windows Mobile 6.5 fertiggestellt. Damit ist der Weg für das mobile Betriebssystem und für die angekündigten Windows Phones frei, wenngleich erst mit der wirklich neuen Version 7 von Windows Mobile tiefergehende Änderungen zu erwarten sind.

Microsoft's Surface gets its first Service Pack, devs and yacht owners rejoice
Forget the future for just one second. Kicking off its TechEd conference last week, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for its tabletop-inclined Surface. The update's mostly developer-centric -- not too surprising given its small customer base at present -- with one of the only bullet points that'll directly interest the end user being new calibration guides for setting up the system without needing an external display. MobileMe Sync Probleme seit 10.5.7 Update
Seit dem Update auf Mac OS X 10.5.7 melden MobileMe-User vereinzelt Probleme mit der Syncfunktion. Häufiger auftretende Probleme sind ein ausgegrauter Sync-Button oder nicht auftauchende registrierte Geräte. Gigabyte bringt Radeon HD 4650 für AGP
Nachdem in dieser Woche fälschlicherweise eine Radeon HD 4770 von PowerColor als AGP-Version ausgeschrieben wurde, die so allerdings bisher nicht existiert, zeigt Gigabyte, dass es die Radeon HD 4650 wirklich als AGP-Variante bis auf den Markt geschafft hat.

Intel wegen „Pentium“-Domains verklagt
Intels Rechtsabteilung kann sich in den letzten Tagen/Wochen/Monaten über mangelnde Arbeit wohl kaum beschweren. In einer neuen Klage, die am 12. Heute 1 : xPort spielt Songs vom iPod auf den Mac
Wenn man seine Songs von einem Computer auf den anderen übertragen will oder die Festplatte den Geist aufgegeben hat und man die Musik vom iPod zurück holen muss, kann die Einbahnstraße von iTunes -> iPod ganz schön nerven. Abhilfe schaffen da nur Programme von Drittanbietern, eine kleine Auswahl davon haben wir in unserem Basics-Artikel Musik vom iPod auf den Computer kopieren aufgelistet.
Wer einen Mac besitzt, kann heute zwischen 14 und 22 Uhr das Programm xPort für 1 Euro (sonst 9,99 Euro) erstehen. Die Software kopiert nicht einfach nur die Musik zurück, sondern überträgt auch vergebene Bewertungen, Wiedergabelisten oder CD-Cover. Android-Handy von Samsung noch in diesem Jahr?
Bislang strotzt der Android-Handy-Markt nicht gerade vor Vielfalt. EMI's Danger Mouse releases new album with just artwork and a CD-R
Another nail in the coffin of the CD industry. From Techdirt:
Danger Mouse is [interview w/ Charlie Rose] the DJ who got quite a lot of attention a few years back for creating one of the very first mainstream mashups -- mixing the Beatle's The White Album with Jay-Z's The Black Album to create the rather unique The Grey Album. Now he's set to get a wole lot more attention from the record labels.
DJ Danger Mouse has another album that he's been working on, in association with Mark Linkous (of Sparklehorse). Yet, due to ongoing legal troubles with EMI, he can't actually release the music. So he's come up with a rather creative solution. Found

Sometimes we think we are pretty cutting edge. We've downloaded the Slingbox App this week for iPhone and are proudly showing it around to our Luddite friends. Turns out we aren't that cool. Vanna White, of all people, already has Slingbox on her iPhone. Wow. No wonder Slingbox is the first $30 app to hit the top 10.

Sony confirms new Alpha 230, 330 and 380 mainstream DSLRs
Sony's been pretty generous with the Alpha leaks in the run up to this launch, but it looks like this new trio of DSLRs for "first time" SLR buyers, the Alpha 230, 330 and 380, is ready to go. The press release confirms all of what we already knew, along with bringing word that the cameras will support SD/SDHC cards in addition to Sony's still-kicking Memory Stick format. The best news is in pricing, however: the shooters will retail in two different kit types, with the L-series cams ringing in at $550, $650 and $850, respectively, when paired with the SAL-1855 standard zoom lens. Apple may (or may not) be mulling background apps for the iPhone
Whether it be case materials and design, native iPhone app development, or video support on the iPod, Apple's not a company to apologize for drastically (and suddenly) changing course. Casio EX-FS10 reviewed, slides 1000 fps capture into the back pocket of your mom jeans
Casio's really blown out the feature list on the EX-FS10, and now PhotographyBLOG has taken the compact fashioncam through its paces. Sadly, like many modern compacts, straight up image quality is a bit scarce here, with obvious noise at ISO 200 and up, no optical image stabilization, and not even the silly 12 megapixel extravagance of its counterparts to blame it on -- the EX-FS10 shoots 9 megapixel stills. The HD and slow-motion video recording is also severely hampered by a lack of zoom during shooting, bad sound, and the oversized AVI format.
