Clickfree rolls out Clickfree Traveller, DVD Transformer backup devices
Clickfree just kicked out a whole host of backup options at CES earlier this year, but it looks like it's already rolling out a few more additions, including the Clickfree Traveller automatic backup device and the Clickfree DVD Transformer. The former of those is a slim, credit card-sized hard drive available in sizes from 16GB to 64GB, which will automatically backup all your most important data as soon as you plug it into your Mac or PC. USBfever adds to Shuffle 3G cases
USBfever is shipping two additions to its line of iPod shuffle 3G accessories: a dual-pack of silicone cases, and a triple-pack of metal cases. iPhone OS 3.0 now being used for App Store admission reviews
So this is interesting -- we were just forwarded an email from Apple informing iPhone developers that all future App Store testing and review will occur on iPhone OS 3.0 to prepare for a smooth transition this summer, and that incompatible applications won't be approved. Seeing as we're already on beta 5, we're guessing most devs shouldn't find this too much of a burden, but we're wondering if the recent string of bad publicity over App Store approval guidelines has forced Apple's hand

The Apple campus evacuated following an Anthrax alert
Yesterday the employees of Apple at Cupertino had a large fright when they discovered an envelope filled with powder at the cafeteria. This discovery led to the total evacuation while the authorities made a preliminary analysis of the contents of the envelope that was proven not to be a highly dangerous product.
We are still unaware of the composition; the contents being still in process of analysis.

EA teases newer Sims 3 iPhone screenshots
EA Games has released new screenshots from its upcoming iPhone adaptation of The Sims 3, due out in June. The title lets players create simulated people and control their lives, for better or worse. Features of the game include new 3D visuals and open-world gameplay. Touch and accelerometer controls, meanwhile, should accommodate the iPhone's limited screen space.

News: Apple mandates iPhone OS 3.0 for apps, warns of 2.x removals
Apple has emailed registered iPhone developers to inform them all app submissions will be tested on iPhone OS 3.0, starting today. Twitter Is NOT For Sale
Reacting to a spreading rumor, both co-founders of Twitter made it clear that the website was not for sale. In other words, it was more expensive that the 700 millions USD rumored, or not even a topic for discussion. Most analysts think that current Twitter's growing phase is now reaching a plateau, and it will be difficult to initiate the continuous growth. So, the theoretical value of Twitter might be currently close to its maximum.
The second rumor, Apple thinking of acquiring Electronic Arts, is much more interesting for us, Mac users, and makes much more sense while opening large perspectives.

Dexim intros multi-device DWP005 MHub dock
Dexim has added the DWP005 MHub Dock Station to its lineup of iPod and iPhone accessories. The DWP005 is meant to reduce desktop clutter, providing a main dock, three USB ports and an SDHC-compatible card reader. Study finds that Lockheed Martin needs to stop disposing of hard drives with top secret data intact
With all of those crazy defense contracts Lockheed Martin has goin' on, you'd think the company would have its act together as far as the need to hold down its data goes -- but according to The Daily Mail, this may not be the case. Apple has reversed course on the approval of the NIN Access 1.0.3 update, says Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor. BBC reveals stunning sample footage shot with TyphoonHD4 camera
The BBC has already proven itself to be quite the source for some impressive HD images, but the network's Natural History Unit looks to have really outdone themselves for their forthcoming South Pacific documentary, which makes use of a modified, $100,000 TyphoonHD4 camera. Of course, those exact modifications appear to be a closely-kept secret, but it has apparently been outfitted with a special underwater housing designed by German high-speed camera expert Rudi Diesel, and the camera itself is able to shoot in high definition at 20 times the speed of a normal HD camera, which results in some pretty amazing super slow motion footage. AT&T considering $10 drop in iPhone plans?

Skype for iPhone/iPod Touch approaches four million downloads
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that one out of every 10 iPhone and iPod touch devices has downloaded the Skype app. At the last count (earnings call), Apple had distributed 37 million iPhones and iPod Touches. Now we are probably closer to 40 million, which would put Skype's total at close to a four million installations.

AT&T to drop price of data plans by $10?
Scott Moritz of The Street is reporting that AT&T is considering dropping the entry level monthly data plan of the iPhone $10 to $59/month, back where it started two years ago. When the 3G iPhone was released last year with increasing load on the AT&T networks expected, data plans rose $10/month. The report cites Cote Collaborative analyst Michael Cote:

MPAA suggests teachers videotape TVs instead of ripping DVDs. Seriously.
So the Copyright Office is currently in the middle reviewing proposed exceptions to the DMCA, and one of the proposals on the table would allow teachers and students to rip DVDs and edit them for use in the classroom. Open and shut, right? Hulu in talks to launch internationally
Hulu today acknowleged that it's in talks to expand its Internet TV streaming service to other countries beyond the US. Amazon takes 70 percent of Kindle newspaper revenues
The Kindle DX launch might have sparked a wave of hype about the next generation of newspapers, but not everyone's so quick to agree: Dallas Morning News CEO James Moroney told a Senate subcommittee yesterday that the Kindle isn't a "platform that's going to save newspapers in the near term." According to Moroney, Amazon demands 70 percent of subscription revenue from newspapers, and further requires content owners to grant Amazon the right to republish content to other devices -- like, say, the iPhone. News: Mix: Skype, Missouri Journalism, iTunes Kiosk, Audrey Charm
Ebay CEO John Donahoe, speaking at a retail conference in Barcelona, has revealed that roughly ten percent of all iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded the Skype application. Ciscos Umsatz geht um fast 17 Prozent zurück
Cisco Systems hat die Zahlen für das dritte Quartal seines am 25. April zu Ende gegangenen Geschäftsjahres vorgelegt. Der in den vergangenen drei Monaten erzielte Umsatz liegt bei 8,2 Milliarden Dollar, der Gewinn nach GAAP bei 1,3 Milliarden beziehungsweise 23 Cent pro Aktie. Damit fiel der Umsatz 16,6 Prozent niedriger aus als im Vorjahresquartal, der Nettogewinn ist sogar 24 Prozent geringer.

Deleting unused AirPort wireless networks
Occasionally in the drop down menu for wireless networks (located in the menu bar), users will find that older networks they had set up still appear. MacFixIt reader Rich B. writes, "Whenever I connect to a network using the airport drop down thingy in the menu bar, I see a bunch of networks that I had set up that are no longer used. Trash not working--files deleting immediately
When you normally delete files, either by dragging them to the Trash, using a system or contextual menu, or by using the Command-Delete hot key, OS X will move the file to the Trash where it will wait for permanent deletion. This safeguards against accidental deletion and provides a way to review files before final deletion.

Verizon first to offer MiFi 3G/Wi-Fi hotspot
Verizon today officially became the first US carrier to offer a version of Novatel's MiFi hotspot. The 2200 model offered takes up to an EVDO Revision A 3G connection and shares it across its own 802.11g Wi-Fi network, turning it into an impromptu Internet access point for more than one device. PSP 3000 hacked, with homebrew soon to follow
The intersection of PSP 3000 and Hack St. has thus far been a pretty lonely little place, so we're pleased to announce that the ChickHEN project is definitely gaining some momentum. According to one extra special YouTube video, hacksters are now able to run the TIFF exploit and boot into a homebrew enabler environment on a PSP 2003 and a PSP 3000 running 5.03 firmware. The code is seen surviving a reboot, and both the system software and MAC address can be changed. While not ready for prime time yet, this does pave the way for emulators, PSP uCLinux, and all of those other things that keep all you homebrew fans happy at night. Cupertino campus hit with brief terrorist panic
Apple's Cupertino headquarters was impacted by a short-lived terrorist scare on Wednesday, a local newspaper reports. Mercury News writes that while in the Building 4 cafeteria, one Apple worker discovered a "suspicious" envelope containing a white powder. Scott Moritz of The Street is reporting that AT&T is considering dropping the entry level monthly data plan of the iPhone $10 to $59/month, back where it started two years ago. When the 3G iPhone was released last year with increasing load on the AT&T networks expected, data plans rose $10/month.
The move would be welcomed by AT&T customers who are already expecting to pay another fee for tethering access on their unlimited data plans in upcoming 3.0 firmware. Moritz sites competition from other phones like Sprint's Pre.

Underwater robot has sense of touch, class and style
At the Fraunhofer Institute in Bremen, Germany, a group of researchers, in conjunction with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence DFKI, is developing an underwater robot with a sense of touch. The octopus-esque robot is equipped with a strain gauge which triggers electrical resistance changes when an an obstacle is encountered. The strain gauges -- which are printed onto the robot -- which are ten micrometers wide (about half the width of a human hair), are made up of atomized nanoparticles, and are extremely sensitive. Barefeats test a RAID of SSD in a MacBook Pro
After we installed two SSD discs in a MacBook Pro we had thought of putting them in RAID. Even though we gave up (we will explain why later),Barefeats tested a RAID of Intel X25-M disks.
The results are as you would expect with data flows for reading exceeding the 500 MB/s matching what we obtained with a Mac Pro also equipped with a RAID of two SSD. On the other hand, they did not test battery life of the machine with such a RAID, and this is where the problem is. We have tried to estimate the battery life of the portable by requesting the two discs at the same time. The result does not surprise us. It dropped significantly, the two SSD consuming much more than a traditional hard drive, which is not the case when one of the disks contains the system and the other the data. ASUS Eee Box 206 reviewed; has HDMI but can't handle high-def
Despite earlier claims to the contrary, it looks like the new ASUS Eee Box, the B206, isn't quite the high-def powerhouse it was intended to be. According to Register Hardware's review, the poor little thing had a real hard time playing even 720p video, only managing to render every frame when video was played back in DirectX Video Acceleration-capable players. That rules out many popular choices like QuickTime and VLC, and you can forget about 1080p entirely. OpenOffice 3.1 verfügbar
Das beliebte OpenOffice-Paket wurde mit einem Update versehen und ist nun als kostenloser Download in Version 3.1 erhältlich. Verbessert wurden unter anderem die Bildschirmdarstellung durch Kantenglättung, so dass nun Grafiken verbessert dargestellt werden. Deutsche Telekom streicht 3000 Stellen bei T-Systems
Bei der Deutschen Telekom drohen betriebsbedingte Kündigungen größeren Ausmaßes. Wie die Financial Times Deutschland berichtet, will der Chef der angeschlagenen Telekom-Geschäftskundensparte T-Systems, Reinhard Clemens, bis zum Ende dieses Jahres in Deutschland rund 3000 Stellen streichen. Etwa die Hälfte der betroffenen Mitarbeiter könne auf ein sozial abgefedertes Ausscheiden aus dem Konzern hoffen. Allerdings seien die Verhandlungen zwischen Management und Arbeitnehmervertretern noch im Gang. Rund 1500 Beschäftigte müssten hingegen mit betriebsbedingten Kündigungen rechnen.

Im Februar hat der Comicverlag Marvel den Vertrieb von Motion Comics angekündigt, jetzt startet das neue Genre im iTunes Store mit der Serie Watchmen - Die Wächter aus der Produktion der Marvel-Konkurrenz DC Comics.

Xserve-Firmware-Update erschienen
Apple hat die Version 1.2 des LOM Firmware Update veröffentlicht. Das Update wird für alle Besitzer des Xserve (Anfang 2008) empfohlen und verbessert das Lights-Out-Management. Bei der Überwachung der Stromversorgung und den Lüftern konnte es vorher Probleme geben. Skype for iPhone/iPod Touch approaches four million downloads
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that 1 out of every 10 iPhone and iPod touch devices has downloaded Skype. At the last count (earnings call), Apple had distributed 37 million iPhones and iPod Touches. Now we are probably closer to 40 million, which would put Skype's total at close to 4 million.
Skype had passed the million mark within a few days of its launch on March 31st. Then on April 8th, it passed 2 million.

Wie bereits auf diversen Websites orakelt, hat Amazon in dieser Woche eine größere Version des E-Book-Readers Kindle vorgestellt. Der Kindle DX setzt wie die anderen Kindle-Modelle auf die E-Ink-Technologie, um eine schärfere Darstellung der Inhalte zu erreichen, als dies mit einem LC-Display möglich wäre. AMD reorganizes, ATI now fully assimilated
It looks like the final step in AMD totally subsuming ATI has been taken. The company announced a reorganization around four specific pillars: products, future techology, marketing, and customer relations. The restructuring also marks the end of Randy Allen's tenure, as the SVP of the Computing Solutions Group has decided to leave for unspecified reasons. ATI holdover Rick Bergman, who had also be head of the subsidiary known internally as the Graphics Product Group, will head up the products division with the goal of unifying the GPU and CPU teams (not necessarily the products). DIY Solar Flyer motorcycle tearing around Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix area resident and motorcycle enthusiast Richard Gryzch got tired of gassing up his bike all the time, and he decided to do something about it. Rather than getting a fancy electric motorcycle, he modded one for himself -- making an electric bike that is seemingly covered in solar panels. The motorcycle uses no gas, goes up to about 90 miles per hour and has a range of around 50 miles. There are very few details about the inner workings of the bike, so we're loathe to say it's 100 percent solar, but Richard does plan on extending his bike's range of 300 miles.

Philips announces US availability for 2009 home entertainment line (with hands-on!)
Philips may be dodging the North American sector with its flashiest of products, but it's still showing the Yanks in attendance a little love on the home entertainment front. Today in a meeting in NYC, the outfit revealed US pricing and availability for its entire 2009 family, most of which was quietly introduced in January. Starting things off are the 6000 and 7000 Series of HDTVs, which just so happen to pick right up where the previous models left off in 2008. The 6000 Series will arrive in 32-, 42- and 47-inch flavors for $799, $1,399 and $1,699, respectively, while the 7000 Series goes 42-, 47- and 52-inch for $1,499, $1,799 and $2,299, also respectively.

Apple may be forced into Verizon iPhone within two years - report
Even as Apple has insisted it's content to give AT&T exclusive access to the iPhone, a closer look at Apple's own devices -- and a likely dead-end in growth through its existing carrier strategy -- shows that Apple may have little choice but to sell its smartphone through Verizon and other carriers by 2011 at the latest.
