iPod touch outpaces iPhone in OS share gains
Shortly after Apple surpassed 1 billion App Store downloads, research by Net Applications suggests the iPod touch has significantly outpaced the iPhone in growth of overall browsing usage. From November 2008 to April 2009 the Touch showed a 300-percent increase, rising from .05-percent to .15-percent of overall usage. Through the same period, iPhone share increased by 49-percent and accounted for

BlackBerry Curve 8520 "Gemini" image surfaces
Well, what do we have here? The folks at Crackberry seem to have gotten their hands on a pic of the BlackBerry Curve 8520, a.k.a. "Gemini." From what we can see and from what they tell us, there's an optical trackball, dedicated media player buttons, and and a "rubberized" body. Lack of 3G is a big bummer, but the hardware's enticing enough for us to give it a look over. Intrigued?Filed under: CellphonesBlackBerry Curve 8520 "Gemini" image surfa

Next PSP to rely on Memory Stick HG-Micro for storage?
You can be sure this won't be the last PSP rumor to surface before E3, but the word going around now is that the so-called PSP Go! (or PSP2, or PSP Slide) won't rely primarily on some internal memory for storage as previously speculated, but on something like Sony's new Memory Stick HG-Micro format, which is about 40MB/s faster than a standard Memory Stick Duo card. That word apparently comes from some "sources close to PSP development" that have spoken to PC World's Game On blog, who seem to also be suggesting tha

T-Mobile UK apparently being pressured to merge or bust
There's not exactly a ton of details on this one, but it looks like Deutsche Telekom CFO Timotheus Hoettges caused a bit of a stir at the company's recently shareholder meeting, where he reportedly suggested that T-Mobile UK would likely have to merge with another carrier or face the possibility of going bust. Specifically, Hoettges said that "in our view consolidation is a means to take excess capabilities out of the market," adding somewhat ominously that "nothing is unthinkable on our side." Of course, that immediately brings up the question of which carrier T-Mobile might merge with, and MarketingWeek suggests that one of the most likely suitors would be 3, which it currently ranked fifth in the UK market right behind T-Mobile,

Mute Mic is the perfect addition to your next antisocial karaoke event
You know how your voice always sounds better in your own head than it does on tape? Apparently, someone in Japan agrees with you. Samsung Alias 2 launching on May 11, E Ink confirmed?
We're hearing that the Alias 2 is on track for a release in less than two weeks from now -- May 11, to be exact -- which would mean that we're just a few short days away from seeing the very first E Ink handset launch in the States. Yes, that's right, we said it -- after all the heated debate over the technology powering the Alias 2's configurable keypad, our tipster tells us that new information floating down from corporate confirms that the device is using E Ink, which would explain why it's able to maintain state even with the power off. We still think it's one awfully ugly phone, but this might be one of those all-too-frequent cases where cool tech ends up winning our hearts anyway. As for pricing, the tipster thinks it may come in at $79, which seems improbable even wit

Xbox 360 to get motion-sensing add-on with full body game control?
Here's a wild one. We just got a tip from someone who purports to be in the know on Microsoft's efforts to beat the Wii at its own motion-sensing game, with some of the details lining up with what we were hearing last year along these lines. The word is that Microsoft is building a "sensor bar" of sorts, but instead of detecting the waggles of Wiimote-like controllers, it detects full body movement and sound, sans controllers. There are two sensors on the bar, along with a mic and a camera, and while our tipster has "no idea" how it actually works, it sounds pretty impressive. Here's a quick rundown of capabilities mentioned:

How-to: set up dual-band WiFi (and juice your downloads)
Yeah, we think you should make the switch.
Let's come right out with it -- you should be running a dual-band 2.4 and 5GHz WiFi network. Why? Because the 2.4GHz spectrum is cluttered with everything from other networks to Bluetooth to cordless phones and microwaves, and all that RF interference slows everything down, making file transfers interminable and HD streaming nearly impossible. On the other hand, 5GHz 802.11n is clean and incredibly fast -- we're talking almost hardwire fast. But you can't just move up to 5GHz without leaving your phones and other legacy devices behind, so you've got to keep 2.4 around as well -- which is really easy if you've got a simultaneous dual-band router like

Denn dort sind die kleinen, an Tamagotchi erinnernden Gadgets, derzeit noch vor der offiziellen Verfügbarkeit in Deutschland erhältlich. Merlin medical implant monitoring system approved for use in Europe
Merlin.net, a medical monitoring system developed by St. Jude's Medical has been approved for use in Europe (after previous approval in the US). The system transmits medical information from an implanted pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrilator (ICD), to a Merlin monitoring unit in the patient's home, which then transmits the information to the hospital or caretaker. Transmitting the data can occur at any time, regardless of whether the patient is even awake, and provides constant monitoring of the patient. If the system detects a possible problem or "event," it will alert the doctor by text message, email or fax, making possibly emergency situations more easily treatable. Merl

Quantum PI's nanoTrek sensors pick up vibration and motion your Wiimote could never dream of
Quantum PI has just built the first motion sensor chip to use "quantum tunneling," which sounds theoretically unsafe, but we'll follow along. The nanoTrek sensors are classified as NEMS (Nano Electric Mechanical Systems) as opposed to the "bulky" MEMS sensors that can be found everywhere from the Wii to the iPhone. nanoTrek's sensing area is a mere 50 x 50 microns, and its sensitivity is 5 to 10 times greater than MEMS chips. There are all sorts of boring industrial applications to such a sensor, but we're looking forward to the not-too-distant-future when we can be completely disappointed by a brand new version of Super Monkey Ball.[Via

Erich Specht has sued Google and seemingly every company that has ever thought about using its mobile OS (like T-Mobile, Vodafone, Intel, Motorola, Samsung, and lots more) for infringing use of the name "Android." He's the owner of the trademark for Android Data Corporation, granted way back in October of 2002. Google came around and filed a trademark application for Android five years later and, wait for it, had that trademark application denied due to confusion with Mr. Specht's. In other words, it looks like Google and its

World's fastest camera manipulates supercontinuum laser pulses, moonlights at the Hacienda
Researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles have developed a new imaging system called Steam, or Serial Time-Encoded Amplified imaging. Billed as the"fastest imaging system ever devised," it works by carefully manipulating so-called supercontinuum laser pulses, for imaging fast-moving or random events, such as communication between neurons. Instead of a flashbulb, this bad boy dispurses a fast laser pulse, which then gets stretched in time and detected electronically, for a "shutter speed" of half a billionth of a second. When not being used to "trip people out" at "raves," this camera can capture over six million images a second. Our old PowerShot can't even do

Microsoft releases new Laptop Hunters ad
Microsoft has expanded its "You find it, you keep it" series of television ads, now bringing the cash limit up to $2000. The segment features a filmmaker, Sheila, as she tries to find a notebook with a fast processor, big screen and "able to cut video." She migrates to "the best Apple," a MacBook Pro, but eliminates the choice because it only has 2GB of RAM.

Windows 7 RC and XP given extensions on life well into 2010
Whether or not Windows 7 does launch in October as previously suggested, those who have (or plan to get) Release Candidate will be happy to hear that Microsoft won't be pulling the plug until June 1, 2010, well over a year from now and 11 months after its initial expiration date. After that, you're gonna have to fork over the Benjamins for one of the retail SKUs if you wanna keep 7 alive. As for those still living in Redmond's past, the company's also extended the life of XP, at least f

Toshiba to Produce 32-nm NAND Flash Memory
While the economic crisis pushes NAND memory manufacturers to get reorganized, to merge or be acquired by larger corporates, it also forces leaders on this market to keep innovating and increase their profitability.
Toshiba announced it will start in July production of NAND MLC chips engraved at 32 nm. The first batch will offer 4 GB capacity (3 bits per cell). They will be much smaller than those currently produced with a 43-nm engraving process. So, Toshiba will not only produce more chips per wafer, but also be able to offer smaller chips to further increase capacity of SSDs. So, we should quickly see future SSD models with storage capacity of 512 GB, while the price of SSD with smaller storage space should decrease.

Will Apple Cut the Price of some Mac Models?
According to AppleInsider, Apple could, in a near future, cut prices of entry-level MacBook and iMac models, its two best-sellers products. however, reports are not entirely clear, as the decrease might be introduced simultaneously with a minor model update, something like higher clocked CPU.To boost sales, Apple might relaunch its popular "Back to school" campaign, allowing students to get a "free" iPod for the purchase of a MacBook.

MSI's all-in-one Wind Top AE1900 gets dissected
MSI's new all-in-one Wind Top AE1900 may look all neat and tidy on the outside, but it's an expectedly different story on the inside, as the folks at Blogeee.net found out when they unceremoniously ripped one apart. Of course, there aren't exactly a ton of surprises to be found, but it does look like anyone hoping to upgrade the RAM may be out of luck, as the standard 2GB of RAM is simply soldered on with no slot provided for expansion -- although there seems to be a bit of confusion as to whether that'll be the case in the actua

Ferrari splitting ex-Gimondo exec Stefan Eriksson's tale optioned for a movie
At last, former Gizmondo head honcho Bo Stefan Eriksson's story is finally going to be told on film -- or rather, the one told in Wired will be. Writer-director Craig Zobel and producer Beau Flynn have optioned the rights to create a movie based on the publication's October 2006 article "Gizmondo's Spectacular Crack-up" by Randall Sullvan, which chronicles the build up to his infamous car crash. Flynn's production company Contrafilm will be backing the project, and should the movie actually make it to theaters and be successful, we suspect there'll be plenty of material for a sequel.

Apple mulling price cuts, developing netbook competitor?
Sure, Apple just posted a record quarter of earnings, but it's been taking a beating lately on the price issue -- not only have cheap netbooks become the hottest category in the market, Microsoft's Laptop Hunters commercials have reignited the Apple tax debate. That appears to have the wheels in motion in Cupertino: AppleInsider says the MacBook and iMac lines are soon to be bolstered with lower-cost options that should take some of the bite out of Redmond's marketing. That's certainly interesting, but here's the real noise: according to A

Sheila the Laptop Hunter picks a PC, keeps it civil
We're not sure if Microsoft is winding down its Laptop Hunter campaign, or just decided to step off the class warfare a bit, but this latest ad is pretty hate free. Shelia, a filmmaker with a $2,000 budget, asks the hard questions like "is this graphics card going to be powerful?" and walks out with an HP HDX 16t (an upgraded version of Giampaulo's kit of choice). The MacBook Pro's mere 2GB of RAM at that pricepoint just didn't fly, though we have to wonder which self-professed video editor hasn't already picked a side in the age-old Avid vs. Final Cut Pro debate

Drool-worthy MID concept stops us in our tracks
We see plenty of semi-yawn-inducing MIDs around the office here, and concepts are certainly a dime a dozen in this racket, but Jan Rytir's concept gave us pause. The hyper-hip look of the design makes it startling in a field not generally known for its sexiness, and the bottom rainbow colored tabs are just icing on that sexy, sexy cake. In this rendering, the whole package would measure 180 x 80 x 20mm, have a trackball on the right of the QWERTY slide out keyboard, and boast an Atom CPU, two USB ports and an SD card reader. Can somebody build this? Please? We promise: ravers everywhere will thank you.[Via

WSJ: Apple chips not due for another year
The Wall Street Journal today took a look at Apple's in-house Silicon plans. Two new recent hires, Raja Koduri and Bob Drebin were both high ranking defectors from struggling AMD/ATI. Both were also focused in the graphics arenas. But there are many, many more.
The WSJ sites Linkedin Job profiles and Apple Jobs and Indeed job searches as evidence of Apple's ramping up of talent in the chip making game. Some have partial descriptions like "testing the functional correctness of Apple developed silicon."
This goes against an industry trend of outsourcing more and more components and relyi

Palm Eos/Castle/Pixie set to spar with iPhone on AT&T's network
The mobile device market is heating up just a bit over the past few weeks, isn't it? The latest bomb is that Palm isn't just throwing the Pre on Sprint's network, it is also building a WebOS competitor to the iPhone for AT&T.
The Palm Eos (codenamed Castle/Pixie) will cost $99 with a plan and be an ultra-thin version of the Pre with a non-slideout QWERTY keyboard.
Engadget got the picts, specs and the details:
It is an "astounding" 10.6mm thin, will measure just 55mm x 111mm (about 2.1 by 4.3-inches), weigh 100 grams, and will tout a 2.63-inch, 320 x 400 capacitive display (that's 80 pixels less than the Pre or iPhone)
