New Snow Leopard beta build includes screen recording capabilities, a certain je ne sais quoi
If you're keeping track of Snow Leopard's progress, you'll be pleased to know that a new build (10A335) has been released into the hands of devs (and consequently, the world). Most interestingly, however, is that it seem this new iteration has a handy screen grab feature that hasn't made an appearance until now -- namely, the native ability (under QuickTime) to "record" your on-screen activities. There are other third-party apps that handle this duty, like the classily-named Snapz Pro X, but the inclusion in this latest beta will almost certainly mainstream the function. Apple verliert Rechtsstreit

Trivial Pursuit auf dem iPhone
Electronic Arts (EA) hat das beliebte Wissensspiel "Trivial Pursuit" auf das iPhone gebracht. Das Spiel lässt sich entweder ganz gemütlich alleine spielen um das eigene Wissen zu testen, oder aber im Multiplayer-Modus mit bis zu 4 Spielern auch als spannendes Gruppenspiel.

RED blows away small room of videophiles with 4k RED RAY footage at half the bitrate of MiniDV
While RED has been pretty tight-lipped about its planned RED RAY product, some footage shown off at RED's NAB party gave a sizable hint that RED RAY could be much more than meets the eye -- specifically a $1,000 device that can play cinema-quality 4k video off of standard DVDs. At the party they played an uncompressed showreel of 4k footage on a Sony 4k projector, which clocked in at 1.3GB per second, and then showed that exact same footage under the "RED RAY" codec at a mere 10Mb/s (megabits, not bytes; about half the bitrate of SD DV), at a compression rate of 700:1. With 27 apps per device, iPhone customers are likely to stay loyal
I did a little 4th grade math over at Computerworld this morning. If Apple has distributed a billion applications and sold 37 million iPhones and iPod touches, that means that each device has an average of 27 apps. Knowing people who haven't installed any apps, as well as some who've filled their device up, there is a wide variance. But what it does mean is that iPhone and iPod touch have a stickiness to them that might prove stickier that the original iPod platform with its AAC files. Read more at Computerw

Vodafone: Tarife für Google-Mobiltelefon "Magic" bekannt
Nachdem G1 von T-Mobile, das mit dem Android-OS von Google läuft, möchte nun auch Vodafone etwas vom Kuchen des Suchenmaschinen-Giganten abhaben. In Zusammenarbeit mit HTC wird der Provider noch im April das Mobiltelefon "Magic" in den Handel bringen. Vodafone gab nun ebenfalls die Tarife für das Magic bekannt.

Samsung plays catch-up with 32GB P3
With Cowon's S9 going 32GB a couple of weeks ago, and the iPod touch doing 32GB for eons, Samsung's finally matching its touchscreen brethren with the 32GB P3. iTunes unable to find items
Sometimes, iTunes is unable to find media items when searching the music folder. This, generally, occurs directly following a fresh installation of iTunes or after a software update. Similar issues arise when a user moves their iTunes Music folder on their hard drive. Generally, iTunes will see the music, but will not be able to play it (adding an exclamation point icon next to the song).

ATI Radeon 4850 graphics chipset lockup issue on new iMacs
Apple customers who have recently purchased a new, customized aluminum iMac containing the ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics chip have been experiencing lockup issues. The issues surrounding the recent reports seem to duplicate reports from nearly two years ago when a refreshed line of iMacs exhibited hardware issues relating to the graphics chipset interface. Apple later released a firmware update to correct that issue. As of the writing of this article, no firmware update or other fix has been officially released by Apple.

Issue: Continuous external hard drive spinning
People have been noticing that their external hard drives continue to spin even when they have stopped using the drive. Some Time Machine users are concerned that the drive was being accessed by another, unauthorized application or because of a bug. While this issue does not have a clear solution, most people agree that the disk access is normal and not a result of a bug.

Mozilla updates Firefox to 3.0.9
Mozilla has released a new update to its popular Web browser, Firefox. New to Firefox 3.0.9, according to the official release notes, are fixes to several security and stability issues, a bug where users would "lose" cookies, and another bug where inline attachments would not display.

Lip-reading software can identify multiple languages, has big plans for Jupiter
Some scientists at the University of East Anglia in England, with aims only for the betterment of humanity, we're sure, have developed lip-reading software that can not only pick up words based on mouth shapes, but can even figure out what language you're speaking -- always a handy thing when understanding speech, we've found. Languages it can identify include English, French, German, Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian, Polish, and Russian, and recognition is based on telltale "articulators" of tongue, jaw and lip movement. Researchers in the Netherlands develop a microfluidic chip for testing drug reactions
Researchers at the University of Twente in the Netherlands have developed an extremely small microfluidic chip that simulates chemical reactions commonplace in the human body, for testing drug reactions. The device is around a thousand times smaller than the usual electrochemical cell (the volume of the chip's main fluid channel is a mere 9.6 nanoliters) and uses electrodes to control the chemical reactions. It's already been used to conduct tests on Amodiaquine, an anti-malarial drug, with more studies sure to follow. Apple Store Hamburg: Ab Mai im AEZ?
Nach dem ersten plumpen Hinweis mittels einer Schaufensterverkleidung im Stil der aktuellen iPod shuffle-Kampagne (wir berichteten) lehnt sich das Management des Hamburger Alstertal-Einkaufszentrums nun noch ein Stück weiter aus dem Fenster und kündigt "einen Händler mit "Kultcharakter" aus den USA" an, dessen Namen man noch nicht verraten will (oder darf).
Gut möglich natürlich dass es Jörg Herengerd und Karsten Bärschneider, den für die Aussage verantwortlichen Managern des Zentrums einfach nur um etwas Publicity geht, ganz abwegig scheint die Möglichkeit, dass der Hamburger Apple Store im Vorzeige-Einkaufszentrum AEZ eröffnet jedoch nicht.
Im Mai wissen wir mehr: Dann sollen die Bretter vor den Schaufenstern fallen und die Sicht auf den neuen Mieter freigeben. (Danke Ralf)

Die Entwicklung an Windows 7 geht in eine der entscheidenden letzten Phasen, bevor die endgültige Fassung von Windows 7 veröffentlicht wird: Microsoft veröffentlicht in den nächsten zwei Wochen den Release Candidate (RC) in zwei Schüben. Aw, how timely. Shortly after the Pleo lineage fell victim to economic pressures, an all-too-cute video has surfaced showing a remaining creature being controlled by a Wii Nunchuk. CleanApp 3.1 entfernt Programme noch gründlicher
Neben vielen anderen Vorteilen zeichnet sich Mac OS X auch dadurch aus, dass sich Programme einfach entfernen lassen. In dieser Woche gab Apple mal wieder eine neue Beta von Snow Leopard an die Entwickler weiter. Auf den ersten Blick sprachen viele von optischen Verbesserungen und mehr Stabilität, große Änderungen fand man jedoch erstmal nicht. Windows 7 RC kommt am 30. April/5. Mai (Update)
Die Anzahl der Pannen bei Microsoft in den vergangenen Wochen ist schon fast zu hoch, um nur „zufällig“ zu sein. MSI X-Slim X340 gets dissected
They're still pretty hard to come by 'round these parts, but it looks like the folks at UMPC Fever have managed to track down one of MSI's shiny new X-Slim X340 ultraportables and, like any good citizen of the internet, they've promptly gone and ripped it apart. Apple cuts 1600 from Apple Stores
The quarter wasn't all roses for Apple. Turns out, it has been reducing employee hours at the Apple Store to the tune of 1600 equivalent jobs. We say 'equivalent' because not all workers were full time. Currently Apple Retail employs 14,000 full-time equivalent workers, down from 15,600 at the end of Apple's first fiscal quarter, according to a filing with the SEC. The reduction of numbers wasn't a result of any particular directive or massive layoff, Apple just slowed hiring as the normal high turnover of retail lowered job numbers.

People want this Verizon thing to happen so badly that the story just won't die. Today, it is the NYTimes' turn.
We're not sure if the NYTimes understands the complexity involved in building a CDMA iPhone. We can't exactly tell the time frame of this statement but they seem to think Verizon's CEO can waltz into Cupertino with a wad of cash and get the iPhone.

Model 2+ production seen as "unlikely," says OQO exec
The chances of seeing Model 2+'s release seems dimmer and dimmer, as online retailer Build Your UMPC has joined eXpansys in canceling pre-orders for the Model 2+. OQO's senior VP Bob Rosin confirmed bad news, saying a firm shipping date was partly the reason behind the vendor's decision. Furthermore, he said that it was "unlikely" any more Model 2+ units would be produced, though not indicating how many were currently manufactured and ready to go. Worried about the company's future? ASUS P565 apparently available, unboxed
Lazarus be praised! The last time we heard about ASUS' P565 was back in February, when we mourned its sad and supposed demise. Turns out that's not the case, as we've now got a hands-on with the GPS / PDA phone from Polish site ASUSPDA, who claims (at least via machine translation) that it's been on sale for several months. The plethora of product / unboxing / interface pics look mighty legit, and as for the impressions, the reviewer seems very quite fond of it. Official: Windows 7 RC publicly available May 5th
We've seen plenty of speculation on this date, but thanks to a quick email from Microsoft reps -- and a handy post on the Windows Blog -- we now have confirmation. According to the cats and kittens in Redmond, the Windows 7 RC will be officially available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers on April 30th, and will be made publicly available on May 5th. Virtualized Windows XP coming to Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate users
Color us intrigued. The gang at SuperSite for Windows have revealed what they know about a pretty awesome new feature in Windows 7: XP Mode, a virtualized copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3. It'll reportedly be a free download for Professional and Ultimate Edition users, and unlike many other Virtual PC options, the environment won't require a separate workspace so you can run the individual apps as you would alongside those native to 7 -- in the example pictured, that's Word 2003 in XP mode next to Word 2007. Philips' OLED wall makes its video debut
We already caught sight of some of Philips' new OLED lighting concepts, but when it comes to something like a massive OLED wall there's really no substitute for a proper video, and Philips itself has now kindly provided one for all to enjoy.
