Apple to make OLED MacBook soon?
The Register is today reporting (and also Smarthouse) that an LG insider spilled the news that Apple will soon be updating its MacBook Pro line to include an OLED option.
"An LG staffer has made the very bold claim that 15in Apple notebooks equipped with OLED displays will appear within months the mole added that once Apple’s unveiled its 15in OLED notebook, LG will then launch its own standalone 15in OLED panels later in the year."
This would make the price of the OLED option MacBook get pretty steep, according to the Register who quote a £2000 ($2700) starting price. That doesn't

Piper analyst does math on AT&T numbers, declares 3.7 million iPhones sold globally for the quarter
AT&T reported today that they had 1.6 million iPhone activations domestically in the March quarter. Last quarter they activated 1.9 million iPhones and Apple ended up with 4.4 Million iPhones sold. Piper's Gene Munster showed off his algebra chops by running this formula: 4.4/1.9=x/1.6. x=equaling the number of global iPhone sales for the March quarter, which in this case equals 3.7 million iPhones total. That is assuming nothing has changed in the last 3 months.

AT&T talking points memo on the Palm Pre
These things are never pretty. PreCentral (via BGR) dug up an internal AT&T document detailing the limitations of the Palm Pre - as should be explained to customers considering both. It just shows to go ya, AT&T is taking the Pre seriously.

Gross margin was 36.4 percent, up from 32.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 46 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Eine Analyse: Bestes zweites Quartal der Apple-Firmengeschichte
In schweren wirtschaftlichen Zeiten wie diesen werden die Geschäftszahlen eines großen, wegweisenden Unternehmens als eine Art Richtlinie angesehen, mit der sich die Zukunft erahnen lässt. Apple gehört dabei zu den Wegweisern und viele erwarteten deshalb gespannt die Quartalszahlen des am 28. März 2009 zu Ende gegangenen zweiten Geschäftsquartals. Während aber Firmen wie Yahoo, die Telekom und AT&T bereits Gewinnwarnungen bzw. Gewinnrückgänge melden mussten, hält Apple wacker die Stellung und erfüllte die nicht eben niedrig angesetzten Erwartungen an ein gemeinhin nicht all zu gutes zweites Quartal, indem es die besten Zahlen für ein zweites Quartal in der Firmengeschichte vorlegte. Neben einer Gewinnsteigerung von knapp 15 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal konnten insgesamt 2,2 Millionen Macintosh-Rechner und trotz eines wahrscheinlich bald anstehenden neuen Modells auch über 3,79 Millionen iPhones veräußert werden.

Report: Nokia's Comes With Music not selling very well in the UK
After hearing initial reports that Nokia's Comes With Music subscription service was doing "okay," word on the streets is now even less good. According to estimates released by Music Ally at an Association of Independent Music conference in London, Nokia's gotten about 23,000 subscribers to the service since it launched last October. That's not a great number, if it's anywhere near accurate though Nokia has "refused to confirm" whether or not it is. Tim Grims

Apple sells more iPods, less Macs in March quarter
Apple on Wednesday reported its financial information for the quarter ending in March, showing mixed results for product sales. Mac shipments were down three percent for the quarter, with sales of 2.22 million computers. Despite predictions that iPod sales would level off or even decline, the company sold over 11 million devices which marks a gain of three percent over last year's quarter.

T-Mobile-branded HTC Touch Pro2 appears in the wild
It's really no secret that the Touch Pro2 is destined to arrive in the States on T-Mobile, but this is the first time we've seen the T-Mo edition not, uh, drippings with goo. Amazon Video on Demand supports 5.1 surround on TiVo (plus hands-on)
So we were pretty bummed in our early testing of Amazon's newly HD-enabled Video On Demand service to find that it only streamed stereo audio instead of full 5.1 surround, but it looks like that's actually device-dependent -- we just tested it out on our TiVo HD, and movies play back in Dolby Digital 5.1. Yeah, that's still no Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD, but it's definitely a vast upgrade from the sad two channels we got off the Roku Video Player. So why the difference? The TiVo doesn't stream content like the Roku -- it actually downloads a video file and plays it locally from its hard drive. Acer says it'll "likely" have one Android phone this year

Piper analyst does math on AT&T numbers, declares 3.7 million iPhones sold globally for the quarter
AT&T reported today that they had 1.6 million iPhone activations domestically in the March quarter. Last quarter they activated 1.9 million iPhones and Apple ended up with 4.4 Million iPhones sold. Piper's Gene Munster showed off his algebra chops by running this formula: 4.4/1.9=x/1.6. x=equaling the number of global iPhone sales for the March quarter, which in this case equals 3.7 million iPhones total. That is assuming nothing has changed in the last 3 months.

Sharp jumps ahead with a new Trackpad
All those who have tried the trackpads of the MacBook or MacBook Pro unibody could appreciate its ergonomics compared to the preceding models. However, one can still go one better, and Sharp has proved this by announcing two portables equipped with highly desirable trackpads.

AT&T now offering refurbished 16GB iPhone for $149
It's always nice to see an already decent deal sweetened -- which is just what's happening over at AT&T these days. The company is now offering refurbished models of the 16GB iPhone 3G for $149 with a new two-year contract. That's $50 less than the previous price, so head over and save yourself a few bucks if you're so inclined. The 8GB refurb is still on offer at $99 with a two-year contract. It looks like the deals only apply to the black models, so you'll have to cough up full price ($299 and $199, respectively) for a new one if only white will do.

Heute hat das Europäische Parlament mit großer Mehrheit die neuen EU-Vorschriften (PDF) für SMS- und Datenroaming-Dienste verabschiedet, die von der EU-Kommission im September 2008 vorgeschlagen worden waren. Apple to make OLED MacBook soon?
The Register is today reporting that an LG insider spilled the news that Apple will soon be updating its MacBook/Air/Pro line to include an OLED option.
"An LG staffer has made the very bold claim that 15in Apple notebooks equipped with OLED displays will appear within months the mole added that once Apple’s unveiled its 15in OLED notebook, LG will then launch its own standalone 15in OLED panels later in the year."
This would make the price of the OLED option MacBook get pretty hefty - The Register says £2000 ($2700) starting price - which doesn't seem that hefty to a high end MacBook Pro buyer. IT would also - theoretically - make the MacBook Pro thinner and lighter.

BGH erklärt internetbasierte Videorekorder für "in der Regel" unzulässig
Der Bundesgerichtshof (BGH) hat entschieden, dass internetbasierte Videorekorder die Urheberrechte der Rundfunkunternehmen verletzen können und "in der Regel" unzulässig sind (I ZR 216/06). Using very few materials, you can make yourself a USB storage device which looks just like a VHS tape with a giant wire sticking out of it! Nokia dementiert Gerüchte um fehlerhafte Handys aus Bochum
Nokia hat laut PC World Berichte dementiert, wonach in Bochum hergestellte Handys vom Typ Nokia 1100 einen Softwarefehler aufweisen. OCZ's Neutrino netbook looks much like any other 10.1-incher, but this DIY affair comes with no OS, hard drive, RAM or multicard reader, leaving the users to decide for themselves how to outift it. EU-Kommission will mehr IT-Forschung

Angesichts der anhaltend schlechten Auftragslage denkt Siemens darüber nach, die Kurzarbeit nochmals deutlich auszuweiten. Bluetooth-3.0-Spezifikationen verabschiedet
Wie erwartet wurden nun die Spezifikation der nächsten Bluetooth-Generation 3.0 offiziell verabschiedet. Wie unter anderem Golem berichtet, hat die Bluetooth Special Interest Group die betreffenden Spezifikationen veröffentlicht und Gerätehersteller können die Technik ab sofort integrieren. Die Bluetooth Core Specification Version 3.0 High Speed (HS) basiert auf WLAN-Technologie und ermöglicht Verbindungen mit bis zu 24 MBit pro Sekunde. Unter Berufung auf Aussagen der Bluetooth SIG meldet Golem, dass erste Geräte mit der neuen Technologie in neun bis zwölf Monaten erhältlich sein sollen.

Quartalszahlen von AT&T: 1,6 Millionen aktivierte iPhone 3G im letzten Quartal

Texas Memory Systems just announced what it claims is the largest SLC SSD on the market, with 5TB of single level cell (the good kind) flash memory spread across a 2U rack shelf. The drive can handle 250,000 sustained I/Os per second, churn through 3GB of data a second, and has 80 microsecond write latency. Texas Memory Systems claims that for similar performance from a HDD setup you'd need half a million dollars and consume 20x the power. Bericht: Oracle plant massive Entlassungen bei Sun
Wie die San Jose Mercury News berichtet, plant Oracle nach Abschluss der Übernahme des Unternehmens massive Entlassungen bei Sun Microsystems. Die Zeitung beruft sich dabei auf Branchenbeobachter. Urteil: Händler dürfen Markenartikel bei Ebay verkaufen

Bluetooth 3.0: WiFi-Beschleunigung für höhere Übertragungsraten
Gestern wurden die Spezifikationen für Bluetooth 3.0 vorgestellt. Offiziell heißt der Standard Bluetooth 3.0 + HS (High Speed). Preisnachlass bei Intel-SSDs am 26. April?

Bitkom: Regierung soll Grenzen für Internetsperren festlegen

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: Neue Entwicklerversion noch diese Woche

Intel Will Cut Prices of its SSD Models
According to Fudzilla, Intel should cut prices of its SSDs on April 26th. The 80 GB model should then cost 335 USD instead of 385, while the 160 GB model will be 100 USD cheaper to 660 USD.This is the first sign that competition is finally having effects on this new growing market, and we should see prices going even further down in the coming months. Gossip Girl - Die erste Staffel bei iTunes
Wer seine Freude an TV-Serien mit Klatsch, Knatsch und Intrigen hat, sollte sich den Einstieg bei Gossip Girl überlegen. Die Kollegen von 9to5mac.com haben von ihrer favorisierten Apple Source erfahren, dass Apple zur Worldwide Developer Conference Anfang Juni ‘09 kleinere Updates für die MacBooks und MacBook Pros vorstellen wird. Was genau diese Minor Updates neues bringen, ist nicht ganz klar, jedoch könnte es sich um neu integrierte 3G-Hardware (also Mobilfunkchips) und/oder Performance-Updates handeln. Pro Apps and MacBooks to see update at WWDC
We just got a call in from our favorite Apple source who says that Apple is going to have a minor update at WWDC for MacBooks and MacBook Pros. He said he wasn't sure what the minor upgrade was but there was speculation that there might be some sort of 3G hardware built-in and/or speed bumps. Perhaps even non-removable batteries on the smaller sized laptops. Again, that part is just speculation at this time.
Also, he said there would be a big Pro apps update. Final Cut Pro, Aperture, Logic, Shake should all see significant updates.
We are still waiting on news of the 10-inch netbook/tablet device. We don't have any specifics or timeframes yet because this project is being kept under lock and key. We hope to have something better in the coming weeks.

CSIRO's patent lawsuits conclude with the final 13 companies settling
Looks like CSIRO's legal days are over -- for the moment, at least. Having already reached an agreement with HP, the Australian government-funded research firm announced this week that it's settled with the remaining 13 companies it sued for patent infringement, claiming it owned the rights to 802.11a/g. Apparently some shady hackers and cyber-criminals have recently started offering upwards of $30,000 for the Nokia 1100 which were manufactured at a specific plant in Bochum, Germany. Amazon offers HD Videon on Demand content
Amazon has expanded its Video on Demand service to include HD content, including movies and TV shows. TV shows are available on compatible HDTVs, set-top boxes or on a computer as a stream or download. The HD movies are not yet available for computers, however. We've been beta testing the new Adium 1.4 nightly builds for a couple of days, using the new Twitter functionality. Everything else is mostly the same (except Facebook seems more reliable) It works fairly well. If you want to follow along, go grab yourself the freshest nightly build.
Because the nature of Twitter is much different than other instant messaging services, you have to first let Twitter know it's cool for Adium to connect via a web interface. Twitter is also different in that you just get a stream of messages in one Adium window. Had they put each message in a new window, the app would become too annoying to deal with immediately. The one window updates every minute or so (see below

Monster NVIDIA Card requires 10.5.7 - in May
NVIDIA's latest video card for Mac, the burly Quadro FX 4800, will be available in May. We'll let you drool over the specs on NVIDIA's website. To add a bit of interest, the site says the card requires 10.5.7 OS. We are currently at 10.5.6 and waiting on 10.5.7.

The latest version adds new architectural features that can be used to create or modify intelligent self-healing walls, doors and windows. Ito Electronics shows off waterproof OLED displays
Details are about as light as can be on this one, but it looks like Japan's Ito Electronics has developed some sort of special "packaging technology" that can make OLED displays fully waterproof, which could be particularly used for watches, cellphones, or that fish tank home theater you've always dreamed of. Of course, there's no word on any actual products just yet, nor is there any indication of possible transparent waterproof displays -- or, at least, none that anyone has seen.[Via OLED-Info.com]
