Microsoft Exec hints at MS Office on iPhone
Tech Crunch reports that Microsoft's Stephen Elop slipped and admitted to Tim O'Reilly that there was a version of MS Office coming for iPhone. He then backtracked a bit.

Dell's 21.5-inch SX2210 monitor now available to order

SGI to sell itself for just $25m, throw huge sadness party
Man, the difference a few years decades makes. In the 90s, Silicon Graphics helped create silver screen mega-hits like Jurassic Park and Terminator 2, and in 1997, its fiscal year sales totaled $3.66 billion. Today, the company's mired in its second bankruptcy, which has occurred just three years after the first. Intel turns Moblin over to the Linux Foundation
If you love something, set it free -- and if it truly loves you back, it will return as market's dominant MID and netbook OS. We're pretty certain that's what our mom said to us when we were kids -- it's a fairly hazy memory -- and it sounds like Intel's heeding that advice with Moblin, turning over "stewardship" of the fledgling OS to the Linux Foundation. It's an interesting move that seems to be more about politics more than anything else -- Intel still employs all the lead developers, so it'll basically be in charge of things, but companies that want to use Moblin can do so secure in the knowledge that it's formally controll

MSI X-Slim X340 photographed, benchmarked in mysterious hotel room
We've seen plenty of photos of MSI's X-Slim X340 floating around as of late -- but these ones -- which were taken in a Las Vegas hotel room at CTIA, are pretty interesting, artistically speaking. More interesting, however, is the fact that the lucky chap from Laptop Magazine also did a little preliminary benchmarking of the laptop as well. He found the display to be quite satisfactory for viewing videos from any angle, though the speakers (housed on the bottom of the system) produced disappointingly weak sound, and that performance-wise, the CULV CPU is speedy enough to run Windows Vista without any hitches. Sammy hat uns dieses Foto geschickt und ist sich ganz sicher: hinter dieser Schaufensterverkleidung entsteht der nächste deutsche Apple Store.
Aufgenommen ist das Bild im Hamburger Alstertal-Einkaufszentrum, was für Sammys Theorie spricht, denn dass der nächste deutsche Apple Store in Hamburg eröffnen wird steht immerhin bereits fest.
Skeptisch stimmt uns allerdings die Tatsache, dass solche Teaser-Aktionen eigentlich so ganz und gar nicht Apple-Stil sind. Möglicherweise hat sich für die Beschriftung auch einfach nur ein Gestalter ein wenig zu sehr bei Apple inspirieren lassen oder es verbirgt sich hinter der Fassade "nur" eine neue Filiale der Apple-Fachhändler Gravis oder Restore.

Palm Pre Classic emulator demoed on video
Longtime Palm fans are gonna want to lock the doors and turn down the lights -- our friends at PhoneScoop just got the first demo of Motion Computing's Classic Palm OS emulator for the Palm Pre. Palm OS apps can be installed by just dragging the .prc files over the Pre in mass storage mode, and they're run as though they were on an SD card. There's no tethered HotSync, although there's a compatibility mode of some kind and apps will be able to pull data down over the air. Microsoft Office en route to iPhone?
Some form of Office may indeed be headed to the iPhone, Microsoft's Business Division president has suggested. Stephen Elop made comments to the effect at this week's Web 2.0 Expo, cautioning that while people should "keep watching," nothing is on track for a near-future release. Microsoft job ads hints at Zune services in the living room
Well, what's this? A recent Zune job posting says the boys down Redmond-town are looking for someone to come up with "innovative user interfaces for delivering a rich, deep interactive media consumption experience in a living room environment." That sounds to us like integration of the Zune software team into the ConnectedTV division is starting to kick into gear -- the listing also specifically mentions on-demand audio and video content, which seem like a natural direction for ZunePass. We're not sure how any of this is going to pan out, but at least Microsoft is making moves to keep the struggling Zune platform alive --

Instead of April Fool jokes, we offer you some rumours
Instead of playing an April Fool joke on you, we decided to give you a dose of rumours. Thus, if they do not pan out, we will be able to say that it was a joke:)
To start, we received information agreeing with AppleInsider about Snow Leopard. It will certainly not be ready before September although we will learn some more in May. Apple has still some enormously work to do on QuickTime X, Open CL and Large Central.Note that the internal build will support Blu-ray but that Apple has not negotiated yet a licensing agreement, and now there is not a single interlocutor to deal with.
The new Xserve will arrive in June, and on this occasion Apple will alter its range of Mac Pro by adding to the catalogue a Xeon 3,2 GHz and a Quadro FX 5800.
The portables will move to Nehalem in November.

Verizon rebranding: an April Fools' prank that should be real
When we came across this post at Brand New, it was pretty clear from the outset that it was fake (the "April Fools" in the headline didn't hurt). Still, it got all the editors at Engadget thinking, and talking, about how badly Verizon does need some kind of makeover. Across the board, it seems that the reaction to the big V's logo and branding is like-minded: it stinks. That cheap looking italcized Helvetica, the gaudy gradient on the check the check itself. The whole thing looks like it was done by a first-year art student with a cracked copy of CorelDRAW. Samsung Propel Pro video hands-on, now with more keyboard
A number of folks wanted video of AT&T's Samsung Propel Pro and a better view of the keyboard. We just couldn't get it the first night and coupled with the horrible lighting, the results would have been miserable anyway. So we did one better and combined both in one well lit video. Vodafone's HTC Magic reportedly delayed until May
There's not exactly much in the way of details just yet, but Pocket-lint looks to have confirmed that Vodafone has pushed the release of the HTC Magic out of its promised April launch window, with the Android-powered handset now apparently set to launch on May 1st. Google's Data Center secrets revealed!
After years of secrecy (maybe because they thought no one was interested), Google held its "Data Center Efficiency Summit" yesterday, where the company showed off one of its DCs and custom web servers -- all in a bid to evangelize for energy efficiency. The green angle means that everything has been planned for optimum power use, from the 1AAA shipping containers (sporting over a thousand servers each) that make up the core of its operations, to the servers themselves -- each containing its own 12-volt UPS. Sony Ericsson's T707 hands-on with video
Sony Ericsson's presence at CTIA this year is a rather quiet thing, but we did catch up with them at Ericsson's booth as we were hell bent on seeing its newest, the T707. What we found was a fairly simple quad-band GSM / triple-band HSDPA set with the standard suite of Sony Ericsson features and some golly-gee gesture controls. Building on what it already does in the gesture realm we had fun setting up Chris "Amethyst" Ziegler as a contact on the phone -- a necessity to assign one of 5 indicator colors to his contact -- and seeing just what could be done with them. Eizo debuts 56-inch 4k x 2k RadiForce LS560W LCD monitor
Eizo's known for doling out less-than-affordable LCD monitors, but this one just takes the crown (for now). It's been awhile since this family saw any updates, but we must say, Dell did a pretty laudable job with the redesign here. Apple has set a firm time and date for the disclosure of its second-quarter financial results, according to an announcement. Vodafone und Telefonica wollen Hansenet übernehmen
Wie der Daily Telegraph berichtet, wollen sowohl Vodafone als auch der O2-Mutterkonzern Telefonica die zum Verkauf stehende Hansenet übernehmen. Angeblich prüfen die beiden Unternehmen derzeit die Bücher des Telekommunikationsdienstleisters, der in Deutschland vor allem durch seine Marke Alice bekannt ist. Am Mittwoch Abend verteilte Apple den Build 10A314 von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard an die Entwicklergemeinde. Die geäußerte Vermutung, es werde nur noch drei große Builds könnte sich bewahrheiten. Gleichzeitig mit dem neuen Entwickler-Seed scheint aber auch klar zu sein, dass die Unterstützung von 64 Bit bei Nicht-Apple-Entwicklern noch nicht so weit fortgeschritten ist, wie er sein sollte. Sling is only allowing users of its more expensive products to use the upcoming iPhone client. Now this is a pleasant surprise. We expected to get our hands on a DSi, just not today. Like the baby in a carriage of fictions-past, the little bundle of gadget joy arrived on our doorstep this morning. We've seen bulky UMPCs with hidden QWERTY keyboards and svelte ones you could almost slip in a pocket, but regardless of size they've always been comfortable with their lot in life: not being treated as full computers. Telekom prüft wegen gesunkener TAL-Entgelte Breitbandausbau erneut
Die Deutsche Telekom wird den stärkeren Ausbau von Breitbandanschlüssen für unversorgte Gebiete im ländlichen Raum auf den Prüfstand stellen. Das Unternehmen gab heute bekannt, die Investitionen neuen Wirtschaftlichkeitsberechnungen zu unterziehen. Auch bei den bereits geplanten Ausbauprojekten müsse die Wirtschaftlichkeit noch einmal bewertet werden, so Timotheus Höttges, Vorstand Finanzen der Deutschen Telekom. Der Grund hierfür sei die Entscheidung der Bundesnetzagentur, die TAL-Entgelte (Teilnehmeranschlussleitung) zu senken.

We really thought we liked Sling. Not anymoreThey just became another greedy media company in one very poorly thought out move. Sling is only allowing users of its more expensive products to use the upcoming iPhone client. Neuer iPod shuffle erweist sich als Verkaufsschlager
Wie AppleInsider berichtet, hat der neue iPod shuffle ein starkes Anziehen der Verkäufe des kleinsten iPod-Modells verursacht. St. Jude Medical's announced that patients from Austria, Germany, and Greece are among the first to be implanted with Libra Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) devices to alleviate the symptoms of advanced Parkinson's Disease. For any of you that have to do work in Europe, you know that the prices of iPods over there are about 25% higher than you can find in the US. We often get hassled by our European colleagues to bring iPods (and sometimes iPhones) with us whenever we visit. It is also why, oftentimes, when you see Europeans in the US, they are likely looking for an Apple store or walking out of one.

AT&T, Verizon looking to join e-book reader market?
As far as business relationships go, Amazon and Sprint's Kindle lovechild has proven to be a fruitful endeavor. So it's with little surprise that other manufacturers have been seeking out that same feeling of carrier companionship. According to Verizon Wireless VP of open development Tony Lewis, there are five e-book readers in the works from various companies that are looking to be certified for use on the network, possibly in the same way Kindle uses its connectivity to download books on the fly. A PCI Express SSD from Super Talent
As several manufacturers before, Super Talent announced the its first SSD in PCI Express format.
This drive allows you to reach 1.3 GB/s and 1.2 GB/s respectively in reading and writing modes on a PCI Express 2.0 8x. It can offer up to 2 TB of storage space (based on MLC or SLC chips) and sports several SSD units, unlike competitors, making it possible not only to offer a RAID 0 volume, but a RAID 5 setup, most probably the first one in a single unit for SSD.
As we reported it yesterday by installing 2 SSDs in a RAID 0 volume in a Mac Pro, we will have to get used to a totally new performance level of storage units, it will not be the bottleneck it used to be in the past decade.

Sony HDR-TG5 makes world's smallest Full HD camcorder smaller, adds GPS
The problem with Sony's previous world's smallest pistol-grip Full HD camcorder -- the HDR-TG1 aka, the TG3E -- wasn't size, it was usability. So we're happy to hear that Sony's TG5 counts a tweaked UI among its updates. And although Sony doesn't say in the press release, the TG5's touch-panel looks far more sensitive (capacitive maybe?) than that of the previous generation's finger bender. According to one of our forum readers, quoting a Canadian source, Apple could dramatically reduce the price of the high-end MacBook Air featuring a SSD as a storage unit. The price could drop by as much as 300 €, and might push Apple to entirely revise its offer for MacBook Air models.Of course, this is a rumor, and today is April 1st, we however think it could be correlated by other sources. AT&T's Samsung Magnet hands-on with video
Samsung's Magnet is inexpensive, orange, QWERTY, and we're really liking it. Sure, we don't have a price or an official date, but we we came away from our meeting with the Magnet feeling rather happy about the whole experience. Yeah, the web browser is a bit lightweight, and the color choice garish, but we can't find fault with that as it is aimed directly at a market that digs messaging and bright colors. The Magnet is comfortable to hold, the OS very responsive, and the screen ample bright and large enough to get the job done. The Keyboard, and the phone's size are very similar to a Nokia E71 (which we compare it to in the video for scale) so if you've checked one of those out, you'll know where we're coming from.

Kerio WinRoute FireWall 6.6 adds Mac, Linux VPN
Kerio has released WinRoute Firewall 6.6, adding a VPN client supporting Windows, Mac 0S X and Linux connectivity. Dovetailing dreamingly with the company's SDK announcement today, Palm's chosen CTIA to show off a round of third-party apps for the Pre, and the good news is that they're definitely dispelling some doubts we had about the robustness of webOS' development platform and its ability to deliver compelling software. We were emphatically reminded that everything here is strictly for the sake of preview -- it's all beta, just like the Pre itself -- but that being said, it all looked smooth and relatively crash-free (as best as we could gather anyhow without giving it a more ruthless hands-on beating of our own).

Microsoft launches entry-level Foundation Server 2008
Microsoft has just announced the release of Windows Server 2008 Foundation. Codenamed Lima once upon a time, this release is being billed as a low cost alternative to Windows Small Business Server. Squarely aimed at the OEM set (Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and various Chinese software pirating syndicates have already have expressed interest), this licensing scheme limits the server to fifteen users (even as a member server on a Windows domain), doesn't include hypervisor, and does away with the need for Client Access Licenses (CALs). SGI files for Chapter 11, agress to $25m buy-out

While we caught this at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Samsung officially launched its WiMAX / WiFi Mondi at CTIA today. Samsung's SWD-M100 MID runs Windows Mobile -- and we have to say that it looks really polished -- with the transitions between homescreen panels being particularly stunning -- check the vid to see it in action. While thin, the popout lower lip keypad is a tough thing to use, the width of the keypad itself and the positioning of the d-pad make it all seem a bit awkward to use.
