Erneut Gerüchte um neue Oberfläche für Snow Leopard
In den bisher erschienenen Entwickler-Versionen von Snow Leopard halten sich die sichtbaren Änderungen in Grenzen und Apple hatte auch angekündigt, dass man sich mit OS X 10.6 mehr auf Änderungen unter der Oberfläche konzentrieren wird. Laut den Quellen von AppleInsider soll sich das aber mit der nächsten Entwicklerversion ändern, die einige große Änderungen bringen wird.

The fine folks at BSQUARE have announced that they'll be porting Adobe Flash to Google's Android on behalf of a "global Tier 1 carrier." Whether or not that implies this "global Tier 1 carrier" will have exclusive access to Flash out of the gate remains to be seen. China Unicom apparantly nabs another: Nokia's N97
We're a bit curious as to why China Unicom has suddenly grown fond of some of the world's hottest handsets, but we couldn't help but notice that Nokia's N97 has appeared on the carrier's website (a first for this handset) alongside the iPhone 3G and HTC G1. Nokia shows off song-inspired Bluetooth headset designs
It didn't exactly cause that big a stir when it was first announced, but it looks like Nokia's Music Almighty headset design competition still managed to attract a respectable 6,000 entrants, and Nokia is now showing off the five winners that have been manufactured as fully-functional, one-off headsets. ITT sues Verizon, phone makers aplenty over GPS patent
This one's pretty light on specifics at the moment, but it looks like manufacturing giant ITT Corp is none too happy with Verizon and a whole host of cellphone manufacturers including the likes of Motorola, Nokia, LG, and Kyocera, and it's now gone so far as to sue the whole lot over alleged patent infringement. Apparently, ITT thinks that the group of companies all violated one of its GPS patents that relates to position information being transmitted in urban areas with line-of-sight obstructions. As a result of that alleged wrong doing, ITT says it has been "irreparably harmed," and that it "has suffered, and will continue to suffer substantial damages." GameTrak Freedom motion controller for Xbox 360 outed at GDC
IGN's gotten a preview of the Gametrak Freedom motion-controller we first spied back in September. China Unicom confirms itself as iPhone carrier to largest market on earth, sales begin May 17th
Yesterday was no fluke. China Unicom, with its 150 million subscribers (much more than AT&T), has confirmed that it will be selling the Apple iPhone beginning on May 17th, 2009 to China's 1.3+ billion potential customers.
With a likely iPhone 3.0 coming out this summer and 3G roll outs just being tested in 55 Chinese cities, it isn't clear how many of these devices will get swooped up right away and how many customers will wait (for the models their compatriots are building!).
China Unicom confirmed Wednesday that it would start to sell Apple's iPhone in China on May 17.

Samsung exec talks Windows 7 options on future netbooks
We've already heard that HP will likely be offering more than just the stripped-down Starter version of Windows 7 on its future laptops, and it now looks like Samsung could be set to do the same. Time Capsule drops Internet connections
Many people are reporting that their Time Capsules are dropping Internet connections during the backup process. The Airport Utility does not see the Time Capsule during the dropped out period, however, the backup continues and completes--the Internet connection is the only function not working. Time Capsules may also be dropping Internet connections more frequently than during backup sessions as multiple users report anywhere from 5 minute to 30 minute increments between drops.

Wireless water meters on the loose in New York City
On the environmental tip, Mayor Bloomberg has announced that New York City will install 826,000 wireless water meters by 2011. Under the new system, readings will be sent to a network of rooftop receivers throughout the city every six hours, enabling the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to bill property owners every month with exact water usage -- with the bill available online. Under the current system, water use is estimated and folks are billed every three months. The system will cost taxpayers $250 million, and installation (free for property owners) is already underway in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. Aufgewärmt: Apple liefert international
Nicht ganz so neue wie viele von euch meinen, ist Apples internationaler Geschenkservice. Bereits seit Herbst letzten Jahres besteht die Möglichkeit, Einkäufe im Apple Store an Emfpänger in 15 europäische Länder liefern zu lassen (wir berichteten) - dennoch danke für die E-Mails.

In an upcoming update, Tivo will now incorporate Blockbuster's online video store into its players. PhysX Physical Engine-based Games Arrived on the iPhone

New Tests of the Mac Pro
Barefeats continues its test of the new Mac Pro comparing it with the previous models. They mostly concentrate on pro applications. Those results indicate that the new Octo Core clocked at 2.26 GHz is faster than the previous high-end Octo Core sporting 3.2 GHz Xeon. The new high-end Mac Pro featuring Nehalem Xeon at 2.93 GHz is defining a new performance reference. In one test, it completes the task in 63 seconds vs. 102 seconds for the previous high-end model. If the new architecture of the CPU has evolved and may contribute to this performance gain, it is mostly linked to the new memory architecture offering better efficiency than the previous FB-DIMM-based system. Barefeats measured that the memory bandwidth is larger if you use 3 modules per processor instead of 4. The Nehalem is optimized with 3 memory channel. The difference is rather huge, as one can reach 9261 MB/s with 3 modules vs. 6195 MB/s if you use 4.

How to Preserve Previous Backup when Upgrading HD of a Time Capsule
Following our previous news related to the installation of a Green WD HD of 2 TB in a Time Capsule, we look at the best way to preserve TM backup while upgrading the HD. The easiest way is the following:
- Disassemble the Time Capsule and install the new HD inside
- Reboot time Capsule and format the new HD, then switch of the TC and uninstall the new HD
- Use a cloning software (Personal Backup or any other one) and clone the data/partition from the old disk to the new disk.

On many occasions we have spoken about Apple Legal, the entity charged to preserve the interests of Apple and with whom we often had reason to disagree. The latter has just sent a message to the company Procreate because of this product.

For Ballmer, a Mac is a PC costing $500 more
In a conference, Steve Ballmer gave its opinion on the renewal of market shares by Apple. According to him, recent data prove that Apple is now in retreat. He considers that this turn down is related to the economic reversal and that it is useless to pay $500 more to buy a machine identical to a PC juste with a logo in the apple shape.
If we are often accused of playing the anti PC troll, however it is not right to let such statements pass by. It is somewhat revealing; Ballmer sought to compare the hardware side whereas its company is concerned with the software. Admittedly, Mac is often very close a PC internally; the greatest difference is precisely at the level of the operating system , and let us leave no doubt about best OS, Vista haa proved that it is difficult to sell with or without Apple as competition.

Elgato Launches a H264 Booster Key: Turbo.264 HD
Elgato launched a new USB key able to speed video encoding, aka Turbo.264 HD.
As indicated by its name, it evoles from the previous version and now support an encoding booster function supporting video till 1080P (1920x1080 at 30 fps and 10 Mbits/s). the msot interesting function is most likely the transcoding of video from AVCHD camcorder and for example their transfer to an Apple TV. It is currently possible to perform such operation with iMovie, however it is rather long if you do not have a powerful hardware.
Among then other new features, we should mention the simple options for editing video files before being encoded, or the publish to YouTube included function.

Mac OSX update 10.5.7 nearly ready
World Of Apple bring back to the news that a beta build of Mac OS X 10.5.7 was given by Apple to the developers. If it corrects more than 80 items, there is only one thing that officially poses a problem, this is its incompatibility with the beta of Safari 4.
However the developers are requested to focus their tests on the Flash Player, USB storage, MobileMe synchronization…
If no major bug is found, it should soon be made public, which we await impatiently, since the delivery of Radeon HD 4870 is blocked for old Mac Pro until its release (it includes also the drivers for these cards, which are otherwise only available in a specific system of the new Mac Pro).

First Test of Elgato Turbo 264HD
The test has been performed on an iMac Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz. While it takes 160 seconds for the hardware to encode a video file into HD video 720p for the Apple TV, the Turbo 264HD reduces it to 62 seconds, while the previous model of Elgato H264 key would help completing the work in 106 seconds.
For encoding a video into 1080p, Core 2 Duo alone performed the job in 399 seconds whereas when associated to the turbo H264HD it took only 92 second. So the performance level and the gain are rather huge, and PowerPC-based Mac users will for sure be disappointed to hear that this device is only compat

New SSD Models, but They All Look the Same at the End...
There are currently 2 type of SSD on the market, high-end models sporting a controller associated with a large cache memory allowing high-level of performance especially in writing mode, and entry level models, based on cache-free controller from JMicron, with performance levels quickly and greatly compromised when several requested are sent to the SSD.Hardwarecanucks tested on of the latest category, the GSKIL Titan offering 256 GB.
As expected in some conditions, as soon as the controller is saturated by requests, its small internal cache is overloaded, and performance in writing mode dramatically dropped.

2 TB in a Time Capsule
After waiting for weeks, we finally and successfully put our hands on a sample of the 2 TB Western Digital HD (thanks to our partner Macway).
Green HD series from Western Digital are probably the perfect unit for network storage, and we installed it in our time Capsule, replacing the 1 TB unit we installed about a year ago.
Once formatted, the HD is perfectly recognized by Time Capsule.

Western Digital releases its Green Disk of 1,5 TB
Western Digital has just added to its catalogue a disc of 1,5 TB.
Just like the 2 TB model that we installed in Time Capsule, this disk belongs to their Green series and spins 5400 rpm. Even though the performances at the level of access times are a little poor, it has the merit to consume less power and heat less than the majority of the other faster disks, and it does not vibrate. According to Matbe it is already marketed in Japan at 150€TTC. This is a little more expensive than competition. Orange Will Release its TV iPhone App on April 7th
Orange decided to fight against the two other French carriers that can now distribute the iPhone as stated by the anti-monopoly council. To drive interest of customers, Orange decided to launch its TV iPhone app the day before one of its competitor will officially launch its iPhone-bundle subscription plans. On April 7th, Orange TV services will be available on the iPhone.
The application will be available for free from the AppStore, and will give customers access to 64 TV channels, with a rather good video definition. This service might not be included in all current iPhone-bundled subscription plans.

TomTom Joins the Open Invention Network
According to the following press release, TomTom joined the Open Invention Network, the company formed to enable and protect Linux and the associated technology patents.

According to VR-Zone, NVidia will launch a new version of its popular GeForce 9400M.
This chips will be a cheaper version, with less features:- Support for the DDR3 only - 8 PCI Express lines instead of 20 for the GF 9400M, so one can not add a second GPU on the board.- 4 SATA ports instead of 6.- 1 analog and 2 digital display interfaces.
This chips will of course have a lower clock speed than the GF 9400M, so it will also drain less energy. Golem hat entdeckt, dass Hersteller Oki zwei LED-Monodrucker um etwa die Hälfte im Preis gesenkt hat. Es handelt sich dabei um die Modelle B410d und B430dn. Ersterer bietet eine Auflösung von 2400 x 600 dpi, eine Startzeit von 5,5 Sekunden bis zum ersten Druck, einen Papiervorrat von 250 Blatt und ein Duplex-Einheit. Schweizer Holding reicht Patentklage gegen Apple ein
Wie AppleInsider berichtet, hat die schweizer Monec Holding bei einem Bezirksgericht im US-Bundesstaat Virginia eine Patentklage gegen Apple eingereicht. Darin werfen die Kläger Apple vor, dass die Nutzung des iPhones als E-Book-Reader gegen das von Monec 1999 eingereichte US-Patent 6,335,678 verstößt. Dieses beschreibt ein elektronisches Buch als ein Gerät mit einem geringen Gewicht, dass über einen LCD-Touchscreen bedient wird und dessen Größe ausreichend ist, um eine Buchseite darzustellen.

Woops! China Unicom post iPhone Page - Guess who is bringing the iPhone to China?
They don't get any better than this! It looks like the biggest mobile market in the world will be served the iPhone by China Unicom - unless there is something very shady going on. China Unicom's site today has the iPhone as one of the phone options available to its customers. There is also a Flash animation on the top with the iPhone which seems to indicate that this isn't just some random mistake or hacking (or if it is, it is a pretty well thought out one).
The only other explanation we can think of is that China Unicom is just advertising which products are compatible with its new 3G service?

Installer hits the desktop, allows jailbroken apps without jailbreaking
Dan Moren at Macworld reports on an interesting development in the Jailbreaking wars. Installer.app now has a desktop application that lets you install those nasty jailbroken apps directly from the desktopwithout jailbreaking your precious iPhone. The application looks like iTunes and works almost as easily. If we weren't rocking the 3.0 firmware, we'd be testing this right now. Anyone out there want to be the guinea pigs?

Canon's EOS Rebel T1i DSLR leaked?
Looks like CNET might've jumped the gun a bit, releasing a video podcast that outed Canon's oft rumored EOS Rebel T1i before the company had a chance to announce it themselves. The evidence has since been pulled and we're looking for a copy to verify, but according to the DP Review forum posters who claim to have seen it, the 15 megapixel DSLR has the same sensor size as the 50D and can shoot video at 720p / 30 FPS and 1080p / 20 FPS. OpenGL 3.1 adds texture buffer objects, more samplers
The Khronos Group has released an update to its graphics acceleration specification, OpenGL 3.1, while announcing a new project aimed at bringing 3D graphics to the Internet. Debunk: Jailbroken apps on a non-jailbroken iPhone? Not quite
You may have seen some reports today about a new app from Ripdev called InstallerApp, which some people have mistakenly been covering as a desktop client that lets you install Cydia and Installer apps without having to jailbreak your iPhone using something like PwnageTool. Just to set the record straight, here's the deal: InstallerApp is a kind of jailbreaking tool (let's call it "jailbreaking lite") coupled with a separate application management client for your computer. From what we can tell, the first thing it does is jailbreak your device (or, if you're already jailbroken, installs some additional software so it can talk to your phone). HP set to introduce 16-inch AMD-based dv6z laptop
There's not exactly an abundance of details on this one just yet, but it looks like HP is set to introduce an AMD-based counterpart to its recently refreshed, Intel-based dv6t laptop, which will make the already affordable laptop even less expensive. Apparently, the AMD-based dv6z will start at just $599.99, which will be knocked down a bit further with a $30 coupon at launch, and further sweetened by a free HP DeskJet printer that'll be available with a mail-in rebate. Unfortunately, there's no word at all on specs, though you will at least be able to get the dv6z in the same Espresso Black or Moonlight White color options as the dv6t,

It's been a hot minute since we've seen a NAS from Seagate, and now we have news that the company is launching not one but two new secure storage devices. Both the BlackArmor NAS 420 and NAS 440 are billed as "fully-contained, out-of-box solutions with user-serviceable, [tool-less] hot-swappable drives that are RAID-configurable 0/1/5/10 arrays," designed to scale up to 50 workstations.
