Panasonic's 103-inch plasma repurposed as multitouch air hockey table
With VIZIO and Pioneer jumping out of the plasma game, we can totally foresee sales of Panasonic's 103-inch PDP skyrocketing. Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 reviewed: a nice performer, but it's still ugly
Toshiba's Qosmio X305-Q725, which was unveiled amidst a flurry of other gizmos at CES, boasts the same incredibly controversial motif as the higher-end X305-Q708, but with an MSRP of $2,700 (versus $4,200 on the Q708), it's at least a wee bit more affordable. Rubik's TouchCube hands-on and video
We just stopped by TechnoSource's booth at the Toy Fair to check out its just-announced Rubik's TouchCube, a fully touch-sensitive update on the old classic Rubik's Cube. The new model boasts a few features the old one did not (besides the lights and touchscreen), namely undo and hint options if you get stumped. Each of its six sides are touch-sensitive, and the cube's got an internal accelerometer so that it only recognizes the touching going on on the top side of the cube. It also remembers your place even if you turn it off -- great for those of us who will likely spend years trying to solve it just once. Card counting iPhone app frowned upon in Vegas
Usually, it's Apple who has the problem with a potential app. Now, it's The Man taking issue with one that Cupertino deemed fit for distribution. Nevada gaming officials have been tipped off a card counting application that can be installed on the iPhone and iPod touch, which would obviously give Blackjack gamers an upper-hand over the system. Samsung Valencia outed by Microsoft, not Samsung
Microsoft's mansion at Mobile World Congress contains -- among other things -- a playground of recent Windows Mobile-powered models designed to show off its licensees' collective design and manufacturing prowess. By and large, the models were nothing we haven't known about for days, months, or years, but one stood out for us: this here Samsung Valencia. OK, we used up all of our good jokes in the titleand it wasn't even that good. But if you want to know what the inside of your MacBook 17 inch looks like, have a gander at iFixit's take apart.
It really doesn't look like rocket science to pull out the battery - it even has a nice lil'tab to help those with meat hooks. For all of the griping about a non-removable battery, it doesn't seem like it is that "non".

GSM Association sets 2012 target date for universal cellphone charger
Well, this is certainly interesting. Just a couple of days after a top European Union commissioner mused about the need for a universal cellphone charger, the GSM Association has now come out and announced that it and 17 of its partner companies are indeed working on such a solution, and that they plan to have a common format in place by 2012. LG plans Android phone by June, two more by end of year

Nokia's 6710 Navigator and 6720 classic aren't gonna win any beauty contests. Our friends at Engadget Spanish can attest to that, and after getting some hands-on time with the GPS-friendly handsets, they pointed in particular to the simple, inelegant design. Fujitsu and Toshiba reach agreement on hard drive business deal
It's not exactly a huge surprise at this point, but Fujitsu and Toshiba have announced today that they've signed a memorandum of understanding on the transfer of Fujitsu's hard drive business to Toshiba, and that they plan to conclude a transfer contract "at an early date." To make the transition as smooth as possible, Fujitsu says it'll spinning off all its HDD-related business into a separate company in the interim, which Toshiba will buy an 80 percent stake in and make a Toshiba Group subsidiary. Then, once things are fully transitioned, Toshiba will buy up the remaining 20 percent and make the company a wholly owned subsidiary. Notably absent from today's announcement, however, is an

Citrix intros GoToAssist Express online tech support
Citrix has formally unveiled a two-tiered service for providing online technical support with screen-sharing capabilities. GoToAssist Express is a stripped-down and less-costly version of GotoAssist Corporate, but geared for small businesses or individual owners instead of larger corporations. Amosu hands-on: pink, pricey, and plenty of diamonds
While scavenging for pricey handsets to hang on the gilded walls at the Mansion, we luckily bumped into one Alexander Amosu, of Amosu fame. The Amosu brand is synonymous with gold, encrusted and dripping with gemstones, and most of all, pricey. In his bag of tricks we found three fully-kitted BlackBerry Bolds, a pink iPhone, and an iced Motorola Aura. If you lined them up on a table -- which, of course, we did -- you'd be looking at some 12 plus carats and a price tag somewhere up around 50k. Sure, we're normally harsh on these types of things, but seeing them up close, we could almost kinda get it. Huge sparkling gallery after the break, so if you have shades, now's the time to don them.

TI's OMAP 4 bringing 1080p support to smartphones and MIDs
Right around this time last year, Texas Instruments was busy showing off its OMAP 3 platform, which enabled 720p playback from a mobile phone. Egnyte provides local cache for file-server systems
Egnyte claims it has solved one of the biggest problems with cloud-based computing- relying on a third party to store data. Hyundai's phones are creatively ridiculous
We associate the Hyundai name more closely with cars and ten-year warranties than we do phones in these parts of the world, but Hyundai Mobile does a little business selling low-cost phones in parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia (cars phones right, makes sense). MWC: Nokia zeigt Foto-Handy mit 8-Megapixel-Kamera
Nokia hat auf dem Mobile World Congress in Barcelona sein erstes Mobiltelefon mit einer 8-Megapixel-Kamera vorgestellt. LG gets official with 3G-equipped X120 netbook
LG was all too happy to show this one off at CES in January, but it wasn't quite ready to talk about it any sort of official manner, though it has now finally rectified that situation more than a month later at MWC. From the looks of it, the netbook seems to be unchanged from its CES iteration, with it packing a 160GB hard drive, the Splashtop-powered LG "Smart On" quick-boot interface and, we presume, the same 10-inch WSVGA display and de rigeur 1.6GHz Atom processor as before. Most notably, LG has also now confirmed that the X120 will indeed come equipped with standard 3G HSPA connectivity, which is no doubt why LG took advantage of MWC to finally get official with it. AT&T promises full 4G service in 2011

NVIDIA's Tegra in the flesh, booting to Android and pumping out 1080p video
NVIDIA really has a technical wonder in the Tegra APX 2600 chipset, and is more than happy to show it off, with a myriad of tech demos on display here at MWC. Some of this they showed off back in June of last year, but it's no less impressive -- there aren't really any mobile devices out there capable of this stuff right now. Still, we're here for the new, and NIVIDA showed up with Android running on one of its proof-of-concept units, and with another unit pumping out 1080p video, with a claimed 10 hours of battery life at that task. In light of its fresh tie-up with Microsoft, we can understand how any LG smartphone not running WinMo might be perceived as a black sheep this week. Make no mistake, there are quite a few sophisticated ways to monitor one's glucose levels, but we're pretty certain we've never seen an approach as simple and as bodacious as this. Massachusetts-based Draper Laboratories has stumbled upon a new embeddable nanosensor that could, at least in theory, eliminate those painful pricks endured today by so many diabetics. The so-called "injectable nanotech ink" could be inserted under the skin much like a tattoo, though Draper's Heather Clark notes that it "doesn't have to be a large, over-the-shoulder kind of tattoo." Auf dem derzeit stattfindenden Mobile World Congress in Barcelone hat Samsung ein Mobiltelefon mit integriertem Beamer vorgestellt. Laut der Kollegen von Heise soll der Beamer unter entsprechenden Bedingungen in einer abgedunkelten Umgebung einen überraschend guten Eindruck hinterlassen haben. Für eine PowerPoint-Präsentation reiche die Qualität nicht unbedingt, für den Videoabend im Hotel allerdings schon, so Heise. ARM demonstrates first 32nm, multicore chips for 2010. Netbooks?
ARM had a few separate announcements this morning in Barcelona. The first was that its partners had ramped up its Cortex A8 processor production and would have chips in production soon. This class of chip (TI OMAP3) is what the upcoming (TI OMAP3 series) Palm Pre, Archos, and Toshiba (Qualcomm Snapdragon) phones will have inside. We'll likely this type of chip in 2009 iPhones.
In addition, with the help of Sony Erricsson/Silicon Partners, ARM will be demonstrating multi-core processor Cortex A9 processor technology that will be used in 2010 running SymbianOS.

NVIDIA releases $99 (mouthwatering) Tegra 600 series platform
NVIDIA today introduced a new platform based on the NVIDIA Tegra 600 Series ARM based computer-on-a-chip that enables a $99, always-on, always-connected HD mobile internet device (MID) that can go days between battery charges. NVIDIA says that this platform will enable OEMs to quickly build and bring to market devices that carriers can offer for as low as $99 (so subsidized real price being closer to $299) —bringing broadband connectivity and all of the Web’s HD content to the masses. While we weren't originally cheering fans of the Toshiba TG01's somewhat odd "stripey" interface, checking it out in person tells a different tale. It actually makes sense and works surprisingly well, and really, there is a reason why we've seen so many Windows Mobile skinning efforts, the shipped interface needs it. Die Bill und Melinda Gates Stiftung spendet 12,5 Millionen US-Dollar für die Initiative Mobile Money for the Unbanked (MMU, deutsch etwa: mobile Finanzen für Menschen ohne Bankkonto), die es Menschen in Schwellenländern ermöglichen will, Geldgeschäfte über das Mobiltelefon abzuwickeln. Fujitsu verkauft Festplattenproduktion an Toshiba

We just messed around with Nokia's new N86, and while the form factor and feel of the device seem a little last-gen, there's no denying the camera's quality. Some of the soft button the face of the phone are a little difficult for our large fingers to press, but the d-pad is pure quality, as is the generic-looking numeric keypad -- T9ers rejoice. In traditional N-series fashion, the slide mechanism is practically perfect, with a meaty, satisfying and easy motion to it, and the general feel of the device, including the seamless glossy front, screams quality. Nokia's N86 makes its 8 megapixel debut
Sure, things looked pretty legit yesterday, but we were awaiting official confirmation from Nokia. That's here, and now we can take a gander at the N86 purely on the up-and-up. The slider naturally centers on its 8 megapixel camera, which includes a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens, AutoFocus, a mechanical shutter and a dual-LED flash, but there's plenty of other N-series goodies like 8GB of storage, a 2.6-inch OLED screen, TV-out and a microSD slot. Nokia Maps, Ovi integration and all those other goodies are onboard -- though the new email capabilities of its E-series brethren seem absent. The phone is due in Europe in Q2 2009 for around 375 Euro before taxes and subsidies.

MWC: LG will mehr Windows-Mobile-Smartphones bauen
Auf dem Mobile World Congress haben Yong Nam (CEO LG) und Steve Balmer (CEO Microsoft) eine Erweiterung ihrer Allianz angekündigt. Durch das Bündnis soll bei LG die Entwicklung von Windows Mobile Smartphones vorangetrieben werden. Windows Mobile wird damit das Hauptbetriebssystem für LG-Smartphones. Bis 2012 sollen 26 neue Smartphones auf den Markt kommen. Insgesamt will LG in den nächsten Jahren bis zu 50 neue Windows-Mobile-Geräte entwickeln.

OCZ Summit Series SSDs get boost from new Samsung MLC
Intel's X-25M SSD may be the current go-to drive for those primarily concerned with speed, but it looks like it could soon have some competition from OCZ's latest Summit Series drives, which get a significant boost from some new Samsung MLC memory, not to mention 64MB of on-board cache. According to PC Perspective, those additions show themselves the most in write speeds, which manage to top even the X-25M, although the Summit drive fell slightly behind when it came to read speed tests, prompting the site to still give the overall edge to the X-25M. Lenovo said to be prepping 12-inch IdeaPad S20 netbook
This one's nowhere near official just yet, but DigiTimes is reporting that Lenovo is set to expand its netbook line to include a 12-inch model in the form of the Atom-powered IdeaPad S20 (no doubt not too dissimilar to 10-inch S10 pictured above). While there's expectedly no word on complete details, DigiTimes does say that the netbook would come equipped an Atom N280 processor and Intel's GN40 chipset, along with Windows XP, and cost about $586. It also says that since the 12-inch screen size falls outside of Intel's definition of a netbook, Lenovo would have to pay the full, non-preferential price for the Atom processor (about ten bucks more), although it's not clear if that'

modu music jacket with JBL turns your mini-phone into a mini-boombox
We've seen plenty of teensy speakers setups for phones, some wired, some Bluetooth, but the beauty of modu is that in this case, the speakers become the phone. Slip modu into this "music jacket" built by PCH International and you get some surprisingly good sound out of the stereo JBL Odyssey speakers, a quality speakerphone setup, and a regular (if incredibly fat) handset experience to boot. The phone side of the device includes a 2.2-inch display and a 3 megapixel camera with flash, and there's a funky "digital sound meter" for visualizing your noise. modu hands-on with the set, jackets, and some far out visions
True to our word, we popped in to visit modu day one to get some one on one time with some of the recently announced kit. So we checked out the jackets, the new reworked set, and like last year, we're happy with the whole ecosystem. Sure, you have to approach this with the understanding that for now, modu is aiming at the middle of the road -- and price point -- and not to take on the iPhone, Palm Pre, and others. Samsung OmniaHD hands-on, now with more TouchWiz
Its TouchWiz implementation is still a little raw -- first time they've done this on S60, so we'll cut them some slack -- but otherwise, we're seriously stoked by everything we've seen of the OmniaHD this week. The display simply has to be seen to be believed, clocking in at a breathtaking 3.7 inches -- and we noticed that it has a rather uncanny capability for washing out any other display within striking distance. Eyes-on with the well-camouflaged LG GD900
There's not a whole lot to look at with the GD900 slider, but in this case, that's exactly the effect LG was shooting for. The high-design phone was being carefully guarded by plastic and metal not its own at MWC this week, making a true hands-on impossible -- but the good news is that we were able to get a good look at the phone's headline feature. That nearly transparent keypad has a glow applied around its edges to illuminate etched numbers, but with tactile feedback hovering near zero, this is a situation where you've really got to value form over function (and in this case, we just might). Neue TV-Serien: ARD und Pushing Daisies
Auch wenn das Angebot zum Einstieg mit 360°, Plonsters und den Pfefferkörnern noch etwas dürftig ist, der Einzug der ARD im iTunes Store wurde wirklich Zeit, schließlich sind die Kollegen vom ZDF nun schon eine ganze Weile dabei. Und angebotstechnisch kann was bis jetzt nicht ist ja noch werden.

Samsung Beat Disc hands-on
Having already taken Samsung's Beat DJ for a spin, the mixers at Engadget Spanish tried out its not-quite-finished younger brother, the Beat Disc. The two handsets are pretty similar, with the most notable differences being a slide-out keyboard and the Bang & Olufsen speakers placed closer together at the bottom of the device.
