Apple argues jailbreaking illegal under DMCA
Apple has publicly defined its legal stance on iPhone jailbreaking, arguing that it represents copyright infringement and a DMCA violation, in response to an exemption filing by the Electronic Frontier Foundation that was submitted to the Copyright Office as part of the 2009 DMCA triennial rulemaking. Helio's Ocean 2 spotted in all black attire
While the Americanized version of Helio's Ocean 2 has gobs of red accents (thanks, Virgin Mobile!), many have wondered if an all black version would hit the scenes as well. Clearly, that answer is well, maybe. A South Korean Helio page shows two variants of the newest Ocean, with one devoid of all those fiery accents. BlackBerry Curve 8900 coming to AT&T this month, Pearl Flip in March?
We've had sightings of BlackBerry's Curve 8900 running on AT&T before, and now comes word from a Boy Genius Report tipster that the pairing will be made official this month and the handset's SKU is already popping up in the carrier's systems. Additionally, the Pearl Flip 8210 is rumored to be making its debut on the network sometime in March. BGR expects the prices to be somewhere around $200 and $100, respectively. Motorola's QA4, VE66LX, and QA1 dash onto the scene, rumor-style
Yeah, wow's the word from Mototrola as they purportedly prepare to release the good (right), the fat (you guess), and the gaudy as the QA1, QA4, and VE66LX. Of course we don't have much of anything in the way of specs -- on any of them -- but the QA1 is obviously an EV-DO set with a fairly big 2.8-inch touchscreen, the VE66LX, a gilded and gaudy take on the VE66, and the QA4? Well, it looks huge, and we'd guess it rotates rather than slides and judging by the branding all over it, is coming to AT&T. Hopefully more word soon on these three, though we've honestly no clue when that might take place.

Adobe Normalizer 9 API expands with PDF/VT
Datalogics has released Adobe Normalizer 9, an updated version of the developer API used to convert PostScript and Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files to PDF format. Output can fit standards ranging from PDF 1.2 through to 1.6, as well as PDF/A. Reports can be generated for input material, and users have access to options and parameters also found in Adobe Distiller.

Digicel launching ZTE's Coral-200-Solar phone in emerging markets
It may not have the glam or the flash of the Samsung Blue Earth, but ZTE's Coral-200-Solar takes solar power to a side of the market that needs it far, far more urgently -- the side without power outlets. The Chinese manufacturer is teaming up with Jamaica's Digicel Group to roll out one of the world's first mass-market solar cellphones to folks with "limited or no access to the power grid," which represents some 2 billion people around the globe. The phone gets its juice via an integrated solar charger -- that is, there's still a battery lurking in there, you just don't need an outlet to charge it -- and should be available by June of this year.

Review: Incipio Lloyd - Mikrofon für den Nano 4G
Incipio vertreibt mit dem Lloyd ein speziell auf den iPod nano der 4. Generation zugeschnittenes Aufsteckmikrofon. Wahlweise in Weiß oder Schwarz erhältlich, verlängert der Kunststoffaufsatz den iPod nach unten hin um rund 15 Millimeter. Der Anschluss erfolgt über die Ohrhörerbuchse, diese wird gleichzeitig zu einer seitlich im Lloyd integrierten Buchse hin verlängert, man kann also mit aufgesetztem Mikrofon auch Musik hören oder die neu gemachten Aufnahmen direkt kontrollieren. Im Gegenzug passt selbstredend keine Hülle mehr, zudem ist der Dockanschluss mit aufgestecktem Lloyd nicht mehr zugänglich.

Moto's full touch phone, more leaked pre-MWC
Motorola is near launching a trio of phones that will be headlined by a rare full touchscreen device, a set of leaked shots at Mobile-Review show. The QA4 will have a 2.8-inch, 240x400 touchscreen with a number pad slider. Android Market finally allowing paid apps
Google this afternoon revealed that Android Market has the infrastructure in place for developers to charge money for apps downloaded through the mobile store. GarageSale 5.2 boosts speed, memory performance
iwascoding has updated GarageSale, its eBay auction utility for the Mac. The software is used to produce auction listings in a WYSIWYG layout, and supports importing images directly from iPhoto or digital cameras including iSights. Users can set details like item attributes, and have the app upload photos automatically via FTP, WebDAV or MobileMe.

Nokia shows off sample image from mysterious 8 megapixel phone
This one won't be a mystery for too much longer but, for now at least, Nokia is more than happy to tease out its latest high-end cameraphone right up until the official announcement at MWC. What we do know is that the above picture was taken with said cameraphone, and that the EXIF data revealed a couple more details in addition to its 8 megapixel nature. The most notable of those is that the phone will apparently come equipped with a Carl Zeiss lens which, judging from the sample image, certainly seems to be capable of producing some decent results. An Engadget adventure with TeleNav's G1 GPS software: hands-on, impressions, and video
After learning that TeleNav would be releasing dedicated turn-by-turn GPS navigation for one of our favorite devices -- the G1 -- we got more than a little excited. Thankfully, we've had a chance to take the software for a spin before its February 24th release date, and these are our findings.
The software is really snappy, snappier than a lot of dedicated GPS units we've used.
Finding satellites can be a major pain sometimes, and the signal can drop while you're driving (see video), which could be a major headache if you're on a trip and you really don't know where you're going.

Water-powered Jetlev makes jetpacks fun for non-daredevils
We first caught sight of this bit of technology in patent form way back in 2007 but, in a bit of a twist, it's now actually come to fruition, and could well soon be hurling you across a lake near you. As you can imagine, the jetpack works as described in the patent, with it employing a flexible hose / tether that gets paired with a separate vessel that houses the propulsion engine and other related systems. That apparently greatly improves the thrust to weight ratio compared to a standalone jetpack, and makes the system a good deal safer as a bonus. Mac version of Chrome still in early phases
The Mac version of Google's Chrome web browser continues to make progress, but at a slow speed, one of its developers hints. Work during the past couple of months is said to have mostly revolved around basic layout tests and WebKit compatibility, and only recently progressed to developing the interface. iPodObserver hat ein Bild eines vermeintlichen Gehäusedeckels des zukünftigen iPhone veröffentlicht. YouTube startet kostenpflichtige Video-Downloads
YouTube hat die im Januar eingeführte Download-Option für Videos im Rahmen einer Testphase um eine Bezahlfunktion erweitert. Bislang konnten Anbieter ihre Filme nur gratis unter fünf verschiedenen Creative-Commons-Lizenzen veröffentlichen. Den Preis legen sie selbst fest, die Bezahlung erfolgt über Google Checkout. CamSpace - Kamera-Steuerung auch für Flash-Spiele

Huawei announces i-Mo 3G modem with WiFi
Here's a peek at a tiny modem making its debut at MWC next week. The Huawei i-Mo HSPA modem is, indeed very small -- the company says about the size of a key chain -- and it boasts both an HSDPA / HSUPA USB modem as well as WiFi, plus it's got a MicroSD slot for storage. We don't know about pricing or availibility for this little guy yet, but it will probably be offered through carriers, and should show up sometime in the fourth quarter of 2009. Hooray!

iPhone 7.5X more likely on Wi-Fi than rivals
A new study from ABI Research today notes that iPhone users are much more likely to actually use their Wi-Fi than on rival devices. About 75 percent of all those who have one of Apple's phones are using their Wi-Fi "regularly," while only about 10 percent of those with HTC phones are using theirs. This comes despite 80 percent of HTC's devices having 802.11b or g built-in.

Palm-CEO gibt Ende von Palm OS bekannt

Robot Land theme park finally breaking ground in South Korea
Or, at least we hope it is. If you'll recall, we heard way back in August of 2007 that South Korea was set to begin construction on a robot-themed park. Here we are in 2009, and we're basically getting the same story all over again. Microsoft bietet Belohnung für Hinweise auf Conficker-Autor
Microsoft will 250.000 Dollar für Informationen bezahlen, die zur Verhaftung und Verurteilung des Autors des Conficker-Wurms führen. Hinweise sollten an die örtlichen Strafverfolgungsbehörden weitergeleitet werden, heißt es in einer Mitteilung. Heute sind Fotos von einem angeblich neuen iPhone aufgetaucht. Die Fotos zeigen ein schwarzes iPhone mit einer matten Rückseite. Das auf den Fotos gezeigte iPhone trägt eine bisher unbekannte Model-Nummer A1303. Google will finnische Papierfabrik in ein Rechenzentrum verwandeln
Google hat in Finnland eine Papierfabrik gekauft, die vom Papierhersteller Stora Enso seit Januar zum Verkauf steht. GDDR5 in 50 nm von Samsung
Derzeit handelt es sich bei GDDR5 noch um ein Nischenprodukt, das im Consumer-Segment bisher lediglich auf der ATi Radeon HD 4870 (X2) von AMD zum Einsatz kommt. Vor Nehalem: Mobiler Core 2 Duo mit 3.06 GHz
Wie eigentlich fast jeder aufmerksamer Leser weiß, wird Intel ab Herbst mobile CPUs auf Basis des Nehalem-Kerns im Programm haben. Momentan befindet sich der Core-2-Duo-Nachfolger unter der Bezeichnung Core i7 für Desktop-Rechner auf dem Markt. Bevor all dies geschieht, hätte Apple jedoch die Möglichkeit seine MacBooks ein letztes Mal mit neuen Core-2-Duo-Prozessoren auszustatten. Video: Android-powered E-Ink display kindles our e-book fantasies
Someday soon, we expect Google's Android OS (like Microsoft's ubiquitous WinCE platform) to power pretty much any consumer device available. Until then, we're left to peer wistfully into the misfit laboratories of the hacking community to get our open-source kicks. The cats at the MOTO Development Group have written a custom driver to create what they claim is the first instance of Android running on an E-Ink display. Unfortunately, there's plenty of that annoying white / black E-Ink flicker as the display refreshes. While that won't be eliminated anytime soon, it's certainly possible to minimize the effect through some future optimization -- this is just a first step, after all. See it in action after the break.

iPod Observer catches wind of one of them new iPhones (Updated)
The iPod Observer (via MacBlogz) just posted what they believe to be the next model of iPhone's back side. They point out that the number on the back is a model number that doesn't currently exist and that it looks like a metallic black instead of the current plastic. Obviously this wouldn't be rocket science to Photoshop either. We'll believe it when we see it.

Microsoft gets serious about retail stores with exec hire
Remember those pretend Microsoft stores from last month? Looks like the crew at Redmond are taking that idea one step closer to reality. The company's announced that former DreamWorks SKG exec David Porter has joined up as corporate vice president of retail stores to "create a better PC and Microsoft retail purchase experience" and -- here's the key -- develop Microsoft-branded stores. Ultrasone intros audiophile-grade Edition 8 headphones
Ultrasone has never been one to pop out low-end cans, but its latest model is decidedly luxurious. The Edition 8 headphones employ the company's S-Logic Plus technology for an "impartial acoustic feeling that allows the listener even more of a spacious tonal perception." These were created with the "audio connoisseur" in mind, with the interior ear cups covered in fine Ethiopian sheepskin (something that Sir Dave Chappelle would argue does not help sound quality) and the outer ear cups doused in Ruthenium. Video: ASUS G50Vt gaming laptop gets benchmarked, reviewed
The original G50V reared its somewhat unsightly head way back in June of last year, but the torture-testing crew over at HotHardware managed to get its paws around the slightly refined G50Vt. The 7.5 pound machine (dubbed a partial boat anchor, for the record) sat through a nice video recording session, and afterwards, it smiled real pretty while it was benchmarked and given a critique.
