Toshiba unveils Tecra A10, M10 laptops
Because you can never have too many Tecra laptops in your life, Toshiba's announced two new models, the A10-S3511 and M10-S3411. Both PCs sport a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processors, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 160GB HDD, built-in webcam, WiFi, Bluetooth, Toshiba's EasyGuard technology, a Li-on battery that's expected to last just under 3 hours per charge, and Windows Vista Business with media to downgrade it to XP Professional. Hands-on with Dell's Latitude XT2 tablet
Official word just arrived this morning of Dell's Latitude XT sucessor, the Latitude XT2, and Laptop Magazine's already spent some quality time with the tablet. Sony unveils geotagging camera accessory

Apple refubs: MacBook Air, unibody MacBook, iMac
Currently Apple's online store is offering six refurbished Mac models for $1,399 or less. Three MacBook Airs with different configurations to chose from lead the list. The first of the three is only $999 and has a 1.6GHz processor with 2GB of memory and 80GB PATA hard drive. Psyclops debuts Dance Mixer app for iPhone
Psyclops has launched an iPhone app based on its website and iPod cases, Psyclops Dance Mixer. The program lets users create their own music video using a selection of characters, beats and animated movies. Amazon confirms international Kindle 2 plans
An Amazon spokesperson said the Kindle 2 e-book reader officially announced just yesterday will be launched in countries outside of the US, says a Tuesday Reg Hardware report. While there is "ambition" for an international introduction, no specific dates for the widespread launch were mentioned. The original and popular Kindle was only sold in the US via Amazon.

More bad news for iLife '09 on PowerPC G4: iPhoto transitions missing
According to a recently unearthed Apple Knowledge Base Article, you PowerPCers out there aren't getting the full iPhoto '09 love when it comes to transitions effects. G4 users only get Ken Burns and Classic. G5 users get Classic, Ken Burns, Scrapbook, Sliding Panels. Intel owners get the whole nine.

Apple to build TVs? Part XVII
The "Apple is going to make TVs" thing is alive and well with Piper's Gene Munster speculating that the $500 million deal with LG means that Apple is going to sell the whole package.
On paper, it makes sense. Apple likes All-in-ones (see iMac). Apple is spending a great deal of cash on LCDs for just its Cinema Displays, iMacs and laptop screens? Maybe there is some additional motivation in there, right? Everyone is going digital now - analog TV is dying.

Google does end around on iPhone using Exchange ActiveSync
Google, you got to love 'em. Apple decided to support Microsoft Exchange Server rather than Google or Lotus (or Apple's own LDAP/iCalendar format!) on the iPhone. Lotus builds a Web Client so that iPhone users can access Notes servers. Google already has that in spades but that ain't enough. They want to sync natively like Exchange. To Google, this is child's play. They just do an "end around" by using Microsoft's ActiveSync to sync Google Apps to the iPhone. This is some serious L33T work. Color us impressed.
Google Sync uses the Microsoft© Exchange ActiveSync© protocol. When setting up a new Exchange ActiveSync account on your iPhone, all existing Contacts and Calendar events will be removed from your phone. Please make sure to back up any important data before you set up Google Sync.

Google plays it safe (for now) with Apple multi-touch
Venture Beat is reporting that Apple asked Google nicely not to implement the multi-touch technology that makes the iPhone and iPod touch easy to use. Google complied (was this just Eric Schmidt talking to himslef?). The G1 doesn't have multi-touch although third parties have implemented it (video below). The Android developer who made the revelation to Venture Beat is glad Google didn't so they don't have to concern themselves with the legal posturing that is going on now between Apple and Palm over the Pre's multi-touch usage.

$99 iPhone rears its ugly, nonsensical head again
First, our take then we'll let you read the story.
Ain't gonna happen. Tim Cook specifically said in the last earnings call when asked about the $99 iPhone. "We don't make the cheapst phones, we make the best phones." That being said, there were a few times already where AT&T was selling $99 iPhone. Plus there are going to be a boatload of cheap iPhone 3Gs on the market when the next version is released (ours being some of them). That isn't the point. Whether the iPhone is $99 or $199, isn't really significant to consumers' pocketbooks (mindset is another matter). AT&T will bill you the $100 difference in little over a month into your 2 year contract.
With that in mind, SAI quotes RBC analyst Mark Abramsky who states:

Sony Ericsson rolls BT speakerphone with music
Sony Ericsson as part of its launches on Tuesday unwrapped the AB900 Bluetooth speakerphone. The device serves as a typical speakerphone for the desk or car but can pick up stereo Bluetooth audio and pipe it through FM radio to send it through the car's speakers. Many wondered whether the unique LiveSpeakR would ever break through the concept stage; clearly, it has succeeded in hitting mass production, and our pals over at TUAW were able to spend some quality time with it. Exploding cellphone battery that killed Chinese man was actually a gun
While some of the details still seem to be up in the air at the moment, it looks like that exploding cellphone battery that killed a man shopping at a Lenovo store in mainland China a couple of weeks back was actually not a cellphone battery at all, but rather an actual firearm of some sort. Intel streicht Nehalem-Chips mit integriertem Grafikkern

According to a passing mention in the Wall Street Journal, the Android Market could start accepting for-pay apps as early as this week. We've been expecting such a development to hit this quarter, and it makes sense with that RC33 update in the bag. Nokia 5630 XpressMusic gets demoed on video
We've already gotten the official rundown on Nokia's slim new 5630 XpressMusic handset, but nothing completes a cellphone launch like a video of the phone being flipped around atop a makeshift backdrop, and Nokia's Conversations blog has thankfully come through in this case. As you can glimpse above, this one includes a dual-LED flash to complement the 3.2 megapixel camera, and the rest of the specs are certainly none too shabby for an S60 candybar, including HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity, an included 4GB microSD card, stereo Bluetooth and, last but not least, a 3.5mm headphone jack. Ain't gonna happen. Tim Cook specifically said in the last earnings call when asked about the $99 iPhone. "We don't make the cheapst phones, we make the best phones." That being said, there were a few times already where AT&T was selling $99 iPhone. Plus there are going to be a boatload of cheap iPhone 3Gs on the market when the next version is released (ours being some of them).

Studie: Identitätsdiebstahl nimmt 2008 um 22 Prozent zu
Laut einer Studie von Javelin Research hat die Zahl der Identitätsdiebstähle 2008 im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 22 Prozent zugenommen und damit das höchste Niveau seit 2004 erreicht. Gegenüber 2007 stieg die Zahl der US-Bürger, denen persönliche Daten gestohlen wurden, um 1,9 Millionen auf 10 Millionen an. Für die Studie befragten die Marktforscher 4800 Amerikaner, von denen 482 Opfer eines Identitätsdiebstahls waren.

Google plays it safe (for now) with Apple multi-Touch
Venture Beat is reporting that Apple asked Google nicely not to implement the multi-touch technology that makes the iPhone and iPod touch easy to use. Google complied (was this just Eric Schmidt talking to himslef?). The G1 doesn't have multi-touch although third parties have implemented it (video below). CeBIT: 2009 kein Turnier der World-Cyber-Games

NYT: Google's PowerMeter to let users track electricity usage
The New York Times is reporting Google will announce a free web service tomorrow called PowerMeter that'll let users track energy consumption in their homes or business, provided there's a means to upload the data. Samsung S8300 and updated TouchWiz UI previewed
While we've gotta wait until Barcelona to see Samsung's Ultra Touch S8300 slider for ourselves, a handful of outlets have already played around with a preview unit, complete with the TouchWiz UI makeover. It's not the slimmest of touch phones, measuring 110 x 51.5 x 12.7 mm, but props are given to the 8 megapixel camera and OLED touchscreen, unsurprisingly, as well as the simple drag-and-drop widget menu and three separate home screens for micro-app organization. Other than some of the icon graphics and the aforementioned menu updates, the UI is largely unchanged from its previous form. The lack of WiFi is gonna ruffle a few feathers, but the HSDPA will probably assuage some of that pain. Hit up

Hark! Dell Mini 12 kitted with an SSD
Like a proclamation from On High come the words: "Rejoice! No longer do you have to put up with a slow Dell Mini 12!" The kids over at Portable Monkey have taken a good look at Mtron's 1.8-inch SSD (the inelegantly named MSD-PATA3018032-ZIF2 is going for ¥26,800 -- about $294) and not surprisingly, the thing has far out-classed the Mini 12's default 4200rpm HDD in benchmarks. Sony Ericsson set to launch Hikaru at MWC?
Sony Ericsson leaked another stellar looking phone today in the form of the slider pictured above, apparently codenamed Hikaru. As with all these early treats, specs are thin, but we do know if has an 8 megapixel camera, 2.6-inch screen, WiFi, AGPS, some type of kickstand -- a la Nokia N96 -- and a 3.5mm headphone jack!
