Turn your iPod touch into a phone with $15 mic
The second generation iPod Touch (and 4G Nano) came with microphone-in headphone jacks. Obviously you could throw some iPhone headphones in there and start yapping on VoIP apps like Truphone and Fring. But to get the little $15 nubbin below going, it feels more like one of them i-Phones. Too bad once you leave wifi land, you are back to mere mortal iPod touch.

Telstra exec's stolen WinMo 6.5-equipped HTC phone remotely wiped?
Remember that Windows Mobile 6.5-equipped HTC phone that was stolen from the Telstra exec at MWC? Well it looks like you can forget about any hands-on videos popping up -- to quote the immortal words of Will Smith from Men in Black, the device has apparently been flashy thing'd, from afar. Motorola Ruby (VE1) ditches weird spelling, not the RAZR look
We'll hand it to Moto here -- it truly is admirable that it didn't use all caps and no vowels to name a phone that's so strikingly similar to the original RAZR, but we can't help but doubt this thing's ability to sell. Apple to use iPhone's GPS to geotag locationless photos?
The GPS circuitry in the iPhone 3G could be used to do more -- a lot more, in fact -- than it currently does, and it looks like Apple might have an eye on an angle most people wouldn't have considered (in other words, something other than turn-by-turn). Digging through iPhoto '09's innermost sanctums has apparently revealed references to some sort of asynchronous geotagging capability, whereby selecting locations from an app on the phone (or iPod touch, as the case may be) could be transferred directly to iPhoto and associated with events -- perfect for shooting with, say, a real camera while toting your phone in your pocket. Pentax permanently drops pricing on K20D
Pentax on Monday announced an immediate price drop for its K20 digital SLR camera, which sports a 14.6-megapixel sensor and a dust-proof, weather-resistant body. OLPC-toting Rwandan students flock to airport for free WiFi
OLPC may be facing some tough times as of late, but there's no denying that the little-laptop-that-could has made an impact where it's been distributed, as evidenced by this latest indication of the project's reach in Rwanda. Treasured 1.5 adds new movie file compatibility, more
Aero Quartet has released Treasured 1.5, updating its diagnosis tool for corrupt movie files. The software allows users to preview a bad file, and determine if footage needed is still available and repairable. Steve Jobs to forego annual shareholders' meeting
Steve Jobs will not be appearing at Apple's annual shareholders' meeting this year, Bloomberg reports. HP Firebird 802 unboxing and hands-on
HP was nice enough to send us a prototype Firebird 802 gaming rig, and while we haven't had a chance to fire it up and start sucking at Crysis quite yet, we thought we'd throw up a quick unboxing for you. It's pretty slick stuff, all around -- the box has big plastic latches that pop open, and the machine itself is held in by swing-out cardboard panels, giving everything that "top-secret missile codes" feel you'd expect from a gaming PC. Samsung debuts PL10 "multimedia camera"
Well, it looks like Samsung has learned a thing or two from all those KIRF cameras we've seen over the years, with its new 9-megapixel PL10 model packing a number of "multimedia" functions in addition to the usual picture-taking abilities. While there doesn't appear to be an e-book reader or any games to speak of, the camera will apparently handle your MP3s and video files with relative ease, and even let you whip up a quick slideshow set to the cheesy tune of your choice right on the camera. Logic3 has introduced its new ProDock for the iPod and iPhone. Samsung's touchscreen GT-S5600 sneaks by at Mobile World Congress
Samsung's GT-S5600 snuck past us at MWC last week -- which was bound to happen with so many things making an appearance -- but we're catching up now. This small and potentially lower-cost touchscreen features Samsung's TouchWiz UI, some type of cam, touchscreen display, and we're sure plenty of other goodies that we still have to figure out. ThinkPads pass the Tough Test, but don't call 'em rugged
We've long since known that the ThinkPad line was one of the most sturdy, solid and well built families in the entire laptop kingdom, but Lenovo's making extra sure you're aware of that fact with a new designation. The ThinkPad X200, X301, X200s, X200 Tablet, T400, T500, R400 and SL300 laptops have all met "a barrage of military specifications tests," which obviously deems them worthy of a "semi-rugged" label. For the record, Lenovo is quite clear that these machines cannot be billed as "ruggedized" at this time, though the bashing that they reportedly took in the testing lab (see above) sort of prove otherwise. Kensington SlimBlade Trackball hands-on
Kensington promised us that the SlimBlade Trackball would turn us into "smooth operators," and we certainly felt retro behind the ball -- we hadn't used a trackball since the original Kensington Turbo Mouse. Muscle memory issues and a loss of efficiency drove us back to our trusty MX Laser after just an hour or so, but overall the Slim Blade is a nice little peripheral with some slick drivers -- mode changes pop up in an HUD, and spinning the ball latitudinally works like a scroll wheel -- so if you're a trackball fan, the gallery below is probably worth a long look.Gallery:

Beambox launches Evolution R-1 pico projector
You may recall Beambox as the company that brought us the very tiny Beambox Pocket Projector. Well, its newest model, the just-announced Evolution R-1 is not quite as compact (though it's still pretty tiny), but it looks like it will pack a lot more punch than its predecessor. The R-1 will boast an LCoS chip, a brightness of 30 lumens, with a 200:1 contrast ratio, it's capable of projecting an up to 100-inch image. Sigma DP2 shows itself in pre-production form
Sigma hasn't had a whole lot to say about its DP1 follow-up, the DP2, since it announced it last fall, but it looks to have pulled out all, or most of the stops for the Focus on Imaging trade show in Birmingham this week, where it has a fully functional pre-production model on hand. EU will Browser-Wahlmöglichkeit in Windows erzwingen
Wie EurActiv berichtet, will die Europäische Kommission Microsoft zwingen, Windows-Nutzern eine Wahlmöglichkeit zwischen verschiedenen Internet-Browsern zu geben. Dem Bericht zufolge wartet die Kommission zwar noch auf eine Stellungnahme von Microsoft zu den jüngsten Beschwerden wegen des angeblichen Missbrauchs seiner Marktmacht. Die EU-Kommission hatte Mitte Januar ein neues Kartellverfahren gegen den Konzern wegen der Bündelung des Internet Explorer mit Windows angestrengt.

Amazon's Kindle 2 listed as "in stock" -- for now, anyway
We heard that Amazon was already prepping the earliest Kindle 2 orders for shipment, but now we're seeing a flood of shipment notifications head our way. So far as we can tell, the second iteration of the Kindle e-reader is shipping en masse, and Amazon even lists the thing as "In Stock" on its website. Cowon gets official with D2+ PMP
Cowon's D2 portable media player never was much of a looker, and needless to say, neither is the replacement D2+. This somewhat bulky PMP sports a bezel that's remarkably thick, though it does boast a built-in DMB TV tuner, SD / SDHC / MMC expansion slot, FM radio, USB 2.0 connectivity and BBE+ sound enhancement. There's no apparent word on pricing, but we suspect Cowon will clear that up whenever this thing pops official in the North American market. Der neue iRiver Wave: Konkurrenz für den iPod?

In diesem Jahr werden rund 25 Prozent weniger Aussteller auf der CeBIT als im Vorjahr zu finden sein. Die Zahl der anwesenden Unternehmen ist damit von 5845 auf 4300 geschrumpft. Much like the S101, the T91 isn't exactly "Eee PC" material. Sure, it's small and ASUS-branded, but design wise, it's a pretty bold departure. bit-tech was able to sit down and take an early look at the Eee PC T91 convertible tablet, and while the machine is still a few months out from release, it seems that you can curb your enthusiasm in the meanwhile. Critics found the touchpad to be a hair less awesome than those on other Eee PCs, the lack of multitouch to be a real bummer and the uncanny ability of the LCD to attract fingerprints as just plain annoying. Studie: 24 Millionen Deutsche führen Bankkonto online
Laut einer Erhebung der europäischen Statistikbehörde Eurostat erledigen 24 Millionen Deutsche ihre Bankgeschäfte mittlerweile im Internet. Das sind zwei Millionen mehr als noch 2007. TSMC: Chipindustrie erholt sich erst in drei Jahren

Amazon Kindle 2's now shipping
According to Engadget, the first Kindle 2s are now shipping to their customers for an on time delivery date of Tuesday, February 24th. 9to5mac affiliate Amazon is the only place you can get a Kindle and the going price is $359. Plex Media Center blows us away with App Store
Media Centers on the Mac have been pretty hit or miss so far. We've been playing with a few of them, along with Front Row and nothing has been really "sticky". Along with Boxee and a few others, we've been downloading open source Plex on and off for every release or so and it has been improving incrementally along the way. It basically does everything Apple's Front Row does, but better. You can use an Apple remote or one from from a third party. Plus it does a bunch of other interesting stuff like play movies in formats other than MP4 and MOV.
But then something amazing happened.
Over the weekend we hit the .7.8 Beta version and Boom! They now have an App store! And it has a bunch of stuff you actually want! Obviously, you want to pick up Hulu, CNN, CBS Sports, Youtube, FFFound, the list goes on and on. The good news

Mac Plus emulator for iPhone goes full circle
If you iPhone jailbreakers out there have a nostalgia streak, or just want to play some old early Macintosh (Classic) games on your iPod touch, you are in luck. In the Cydia repository is a game called Mini vMac that is a old Mac Plus emulator.

China's Chery Automobile produces its first plug-in electric car
Clean automobiles are starting to hit the streets of China, and just a few short months after BYD rolled its first plug-in hybrid out of the factory, Chery Automobile has followed suit sort of, anyway. Unlike BYD's alternative, the just announced S18 is purely electric, promising up to 150 kilometers on a single charge and a maximum speed of 120kph (around 72mph). The battery can be juiced from empty to full in around six hours using a standard 220-volt home outlet, while it can reach 80 percent capacity within just a half hour. Yuan Tao, vice president of Chery, confessed that the price would be "very suitable for families," though he held back from giving specifics --
