Apple sued over e-book patent infringement
A Swiss company, MONEC Holding AG, has targeted Apple in yet another lawsuit involving the iPhone. The company claims that the handset violates a patent entitled "Electronic device, preferably an electronic book." MONEC seeks triple compensatory damages, including lost profits, interest, attorneys fees and costs. The company also aims to receive royalties, along with the assessed value of Apple's

Installer hits the desktop, allows jailbroken apps without jailbreaking
Dan Moren at Macworld reports on an interesting development in the Jailbreaking wars. Installer.app now has a desktop application that lets you install those nasty jailbroken apps directly from the desktopwithout jailbreaking your precious iPhone. Zer01 Mobile's a nomad, will roam with a variety of carriers
It won't make much of a difference to the end user -- all they'll care is that they're getting unlimited voice and data for under $70 a month -- but it turns out that Zer01 Mobile's upcoming VoIP-based service won't be using AT&T alone to provide service. Samsung Papyrus e-book reader on track for Korean launch this summer
Samsung had an early version of its Papyrus e-book reader on hand at CES, but it looks like a spruced up version of the device is now making the rounds in Europe, and the company has taken advantage of the opportunity to dish out a few new details. If you've ever thought that the iPhone might be a lawsuit magnet, we now have even more proof for you. It looks like a company called MONEC Holding Ltd., based in Berne, is suing Apple for patent infringement, unfair trade practices, monopolization, and tortious interference (whatever that means). Ericsson's W3x Series HSPA Mobile Broadband Routers don't slouch on looks
3G routers aren't a new idea, and they still aren't for the everyman, but at least Ericsson has realized that they don't have to look hopelessly generic. Mitsubishi affirms that LaserVue HDTV production is back on
After Mitsubishi suddenly and unexpectedly suspended production of its flagship LaserVue HDTV in early February, many took the liberty of believing that the end was nigh for this extremely high-end set (given the not-exactly-booming economy). We contacted Mitsubishi in order to follow up, and today we've received direct confirmation that the LaserVue is indeed "back in production." BlackBerry Niagara 9630 reviewed in all its prerelease glory
Most of us are going to have to wait until at least May to get our hands on a 9630, but for well-connected individuals whose blogs rhyme with "Soy Beanius Report," patience isn't in the vocabulary. EU-Kommissarin fordert schnellere Providerwechsel
Geht es nach dem Willen von EU-Kommissarin Viviane Reding, so soll ein Wechsel des Mobilfunk- und Festnetzanbieters unter Mitnahme der Rufnummer künftig in Europa innerhalb von 24 Stunden möglich sein. In Irland und auf Malta dauere ein Providerwechsel nicht länger als einen Tag, aber in vielen anderen europäischen Ländern sei dies nicht der Fall, so Reding. In Italien müsse man sich 15 Tage gedulden, in Polen könne man den Telefonanbieter erst nach 38 Tagen wechseln.

Best Buy sued for violating its Price Match policy on purpose
Last Thursday, the U.S. District Court, Southern District approved a motion for a class-action suit filed by plaintiff Thomas Jermyn in New York State against Best Buy. Essentially, this suit will claim that Best Buy is in "extreme" violation of its own Price Match policy, and that it uses the advertised policy as a way to scam consumers into the stores and purchase gear. Best Buy's Price Match policy is "undisclosed," meaning that we don't know how it actually operates -- and the suit claims that the company routinely denies the Price Match policy -- as a matter of a lesser known, less cooler policy. Apple hat sich dafür entschuldigt, dass das aktuellste Security Update 2009-001 für Mac OS X den Perl-Support zerstört. DSiWare to include Game Boy and Game Boy Advance downloads?
We really would like to think this is inevitable, but it's just been sourced from Nintendo itself (albeit at a GameStop meetup) that the DSi might be getting Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles as downloadable DSiWare -- in addition to previously announced apps like browsers and calculators. This was heard second-hand from a Club Nintendo member, and Nintendo has pointed out to the folks at Kombo that reported it that so far such functionality has only been announced for Japan, but didn't go on the deny it outright. Michael Dell does/doesn't confirm Dell smartphones
Depending upon which source you believe, Michael Dell either directly commented on Dell's smartphone plans or just hinted at them. DigiTimes has Michael Dell paraphrased as saying in Taipei that Dell will not delay its smartphone lineup and is on schedule to release devices in line with its internal roadmap. The IDG news service, however, has him in Tokyo just hinting at smartphones. "It is true that we are exploring smaller screen devices," said Dell, adding, "We don't have any announcements to share today but stay tuned as when we have new news we will share that with you." Mr. Dell all mentioned Dell's carrier agreements already in place for the 3G radios Dell ships in it laptops. Genius-Seitenleiste für TV-Shows & Filme
Mit dem Update auf iTunes 8.1 hat uns Apple eine Genius-Seitenleiste mit Empfehlungen für Filme und Fernsehsendungen versprochen, aber wie quer durchs Internet bemängelt wurde, wohl aber "vergessen" diese zu implementieren. Inzwischen wurde die Funktion allerdings nachgerüstet (Danke Thomas!).
Im Bereich Fernsehsendungen der iTunes-Mediathek lässt sich jetzt eine Seitenleiste mit Genius-Empfehlungen einblenden, sobald eine einzelne Sendung ausgewählt wird. Da diese Empfehlungen per direktem Zugriff auf den iTunes Store eingeblendet werden, "sieht" iTunes, welchen Store man aktuell ausgewählt hat und macht davon abhängig, ob auch für Filme Empfehlungen bereit stehen. Solange man den deutschen iTunes Store eingestellt hat, fehlt die Genius-Leiste in der Rubrik Filme, stellt man den Store auf die USA um, so erhält man auch für die eigene Filmbibliothek entsprechende Vorschläge.

Peek Pronto sneaks out the door with support for more accounts, fewer colors
Boy, Peek wasn't kidding when it called its new device Pronto. With nary a press announcement to froth up the minds of mobile emailers the device has rushed straight to availability for $79.95, sadly in just one color. What does the $30 premium over the earlier Peek get you? Push email, for one thing, plus support for up to five accounts (the previous maxed out at two), support for PDF and Word attachments, and overall faster performance. Gartner: Outsourcing-Preise fallen um durchschnittlich 10 Prozent
Das Marktforschungsunternehmen Gartner schätzt, dass die Preise für ausgelagerte IT-Dienstleistungen in den nächsten zwei Jahren zwischen 5 und 20 Prozent fallen werden. OCZ introduces Eclipse and Behemoth wired gaming mice
It's going to be tough for OCZ Technology to top its Z Drive, but clearly, it's not aiming to do such a thing just yet. Instead, it's setting its sights rather low with a somewhat plain duo of gaming mice. Both the Eclipse and Behemoth arrive with the ability to switch between four different profiles and with support for uploading profiles direct to the onboard memory. The former sports a "time-honored compact style" and sports a 2,400DPI sensor, while the latter is a bit beefier in size and touts a 3,200DPI sensor. There's no mention of pricing or availability for either, but you definitely won't be asked to pay a premium for cutting-edge design.

iPhone-Freisprechen: Contour SurfaceSound Compact
Das US-Unternehmen Contour Design hat sich auf iPod- und iPhone-Zubehör spezialisiert und vertreibt neben eine Vielzahl an Cases und Schutzhüllen für alle Gerätegenerationen auch verschiedene Freisprechlösungen für das iPhone. Wir haben uns das SurfaceSound Compact näher angesehen, eine vom Bluetooth-Spezialisten Bluetrek hergestellte, extrem flache Kombination aus Lautsprecher und Mikrofon mit Halteclip für die Sonnenblende.
Die Befestigung selbst ist so simpel wie robust: eine gebogene Blechlasche, mit deren Hilfe das Freisprech-Kit an die Sonnenblende geklemmt wird. Diese Art der Befestigung lässt ein wenig Spiel und hat zur Folge, dass sich das SurfaceSound bei den ersten Bedienversuchen vielleicht ein wenig verschiebt. Qnap hat die nach eigenen Angaben ersten 1- und 2-Disk-NAS-Server mit iSCSI-Unterstützung vorgestellt. Die Turbostation-Modelle TS-119 und TS-219 arbeiten mit einem 1,2 GHz schnellem Marvell-Prozessor und 512 MByte DDR2-RAM laut Hersteller mehr als doppelt so schnell wie die Vorgänger TS-109 und TS-209. Belkin ruft Powerline-Adapter zurück
Belkin hat heute eine freiwillige Rückrufaktion von Teilen seines Powerline-Starterkits (F5D4073ed), des Powerline-AV-Starterkits (F5D4074ed) sowie der dazugehörigen Einzeladapter F5D4073edS und F5D4073edS in Europa gestartet. Von Belkin durchgeführte Produkttests haben ergeben, dass eine ausgelieferte Charge nicht den Richtlinien der European Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2006/95/EC und somit auch nicht dem europäischem Standard 60950-1 entspricht. Die betroffene Charge hat einen elektrischen Spannungstest mit 3000 Volt nicht bestanden, was jedoch europäischer Standard ist. Die Geräte können demnach einen Stromschlag abgeben.

Telstra loves to brag about being the "world's fastest national mobile broadband network." And they should after a recent 21Mbps (theoretical) upgrade to its Next G network in Australia's major cities. Of course real-world performance won't come close to that but the PC-only, Telstra Turbo 21 USB modem likely smokes any over the air setup you've been using. ZDNET tested the Turbo 21 in Sydney and found performance landing on "the right side of excellent." Performance peaked at about 6Mbps but this was variable at best. Wacom's Intuos4 removes layers, gets previewed
We've already seen some blurred image of the Wacom Intuos4's box and in-store display, and now we've got some much cleaner shots and hands-on impressions from ThatPoshGirls, which seems to have come back from a years-long hiatus just to cover this tablet. The new pen base is well-received, as are the LED screens that remind what each button is programmed to do. Overall, it's what you've come to expect from the Intuos series, along with improved Windows Vista compatibility. Complete, nearly finalized Pandora gets shown off on video
Poor Pandora. It looks like the shock of actually being nearly finished has turned it stark white. The little trooper was still able to make it through its latest demo video though, and it looks to be running better than ever, with it sailing through Quake at the handheld's native 800 x 480 resolution and at a full 60 fps. Just as importantly, the d-pad, nubs, action buttons, and keypad are all now apparently in their final or nearly final states and seemingly up to their all-purpose tasks, as are the all-important blinkin' LED lights. ASUS promises voice-controlled Eee products by end of the year
For a company that gets so much (deserved) guff for endless, boring product iterations, ASUS also manages to sneak in a good amount of crazy functionality -- some of it more gimmicky than others. Samsung NC310 netbook gets a price, official pics
Samsung didn't exactly skip over a lot of details when it announced its new NC310 netbook earlier today, but it looks like it's now clearing up a few remaining tidbits, and dishing out some new, polished up press shots of the long-lasting netbook for good measure. While there's unfortunately still no official US pricing just yet, the NC310 (or N310 as it's also being called) will apparently demand £399 (or $577) when it hits the UK in May, at which point it'll only be available in basic black, with blue to follow shortly thereafter (no word on the remaining colors). iPod ponzi scheme lands 17-year prison sentence
Within days of an arrest involving 9,000 fraudulently obtained iPods, a second iPod-related scam has surfaced, according to the Miami Herald. Retrospect 8 ships for Mac...asks for another chance
Retrospect 8 is now shipping for Mac. It has been forever and a day (5 years!) since version 6 first shipped. Version 7 was PC only. Since then, the product has been getting older, less reliable and, to many, unusable. I did a roundup of backup solutions almost two years ago for the Macintosh platform. Unfortunately, not much has changed since then. Mac shops don't have a great answer to their backup needs.
Today, I am using Time Machine for day to day backups which works acceptably for most things (I turn off everything but my Docs folder). For cloning, I use Carbon Copy Cloner which was just updated recently to vers. 2.2 and works great.
Overwhelmingly however, I am sending more

VUZE adds trascoding support for iPod, iPhone and AppleTV
We've been using Vuze and it's former brand Azureus since we fist started bit torrenting Linux ISO's and other totally legal stuff. While a bit bloated, it has always been the most feature packed, cross platform Bittorrent client available. When they changed their brand to VUZE, they added a HD video distribution network which had some good content, some not so good. Now, in version 4.2, they've added client side video transcoding to all of your favorite devices.
Along with iPods, iPhones and AppleTV's, Vuze now supports Playstation and XBox MP4 formatted movies.
It is a reatively easy process to set up but slow to finish unless you have a some serious MP4 horsepower. The good news is that the process is all automated

DJ Hero's site goes live, doesn't drop any clues, beats
A little while back, Activision -- the fine folks responsible for bringing Guitar Hero to the world -- confirmed that it was working on a similarly named new title, DJ Hero. Well, the official site's appeared, and though it gives us no information about the actual game itself, well, you get the idea, right? Please, please let the above setup work in commiseration with Guitar Hero so that we can finally fulfill our dream of playing the part of Mr. Hahn with the rest of our band, Linkin Park.
