mCubed's Atom-powered RipNAS combines CD ripper with NAS drive
Not that we haven't seen Atom-based NAS devices before, but we've yet to see one with an integrated optical drive. Looking to serve a unique niche that still hasn't transferred that CD collection to HDD, the RipNAS combines an audio CD ripper with oodles of network-accessible storage space, and as if that wasn't enough, there's also media streaming abilities baked in. The whole unit is fanless in nature and requires no external keyboard / PC in order to rip files to your favorite lossless format, retrieve all associated metadata and automatically re-rip tracks if errors are detected. Google does end around on iPhone using Exchange SyncML
Google, you got to love 'em. Apple decided to support Microsoft Exchange Server rather than Google or Lotus (or Apple's own LDAP/iCalendar format!) on the iPhone. To Google, this is child's play. They just do an "end around" by using Microsoft's SynchML to synch Google Apps to the iPhone. Color us impressed.
Oh, and Google Apps now sync with Windows Mobile devices. joy?

Panasonic sets out to bring "3D Full HD" to Blu-ray by 2010
Panasonic was already well on board the 3D bandwagon when we caught up with them at CES, and it looks like the company is now set to really blow things out, with it today announcing the opening of a new 3D authoring laboratory at its Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory in California. That, it says, will help it bring so-called "3D Full HD" to Blu-ray by 2010, and it'll apparently be working directly with various studios to ensure that 3D FHD (as the company seems to be calling it) becomes an actual standard of some sort for high-def 3D. Apple's Snow Leopard to load printer drivers on demand
As part of Apple's plans to help trim the footprint of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, the new system will cease the customary installation of several gigabytes of printer drivers and instead load only the files necessary for existing devices, relying on Software Update to obtain new drivers in the future as needed.

Samsung intros wide angle, 10x zoom digicam
Samsung on Monday introduced what it claims to be the world's first digital camera with a wide angle, 24mm lens and a 10x optical zoom with the 10.2-megapixel WB500. The camera also has both hardware and software image stabilization to help eliminate blurry images. It is capable of recording H.264-format video at up to 720p high-definition resolution.

UMID M1 photos definitely surface - the rest we're not so sure about
We've been hearing a bit about UMID's MID M1 since it was first spotted last month -- most of it wildly contradictory. At least we've reached a consensus (or so we think) on some of the essentials: weighing in at 0.7 pounds, this guy sports a 4.8-inch (1024 x 600) touchscreen, a 1.1GHz Atom processor, up to 1GB memory, up to 32GB SSD, WiBro / HSDPA / WiMAX / WiFi / Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel camera, mini USB 2.0, and an SD/USIM card. The device is shipping with Linux -- which may come as a surprise to whomever ordered its Windows and Internet Explorer keys. Instant Backup 1.5 adds new selection options
Zevrix Solutions has released the latest version of its data backup software, Instant Backup 1.5. The update adds the ability to back up a selected file or folder directly from the system-wide Instant Backup menu. A number of bugs have also been fixed, including a problem that would cause a menu to disappear and another issue regarding duplicate default backups.

Flickit for iPhone uploads, tags for Flickr

AAPL trades over $100; Jobs not essential?

Verizon, others commit to LiMo phones this year
The LiMo Foundation on Monday announced six new wireless providers have committed to release LiMo Platform based handsets in 2009. The Linux OS-based phones will become available from Verizon Wireless, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefonica and Vodafone sometime in 2009. The open-source Linux operating system in the devices will be based on the latest version of the LiMo Platform.

Haptic Compass gives you sense of direction, not style
While most folks can get by just fine by simply looking at a compass, Eric from Monkeys & Robots decided to see just how just how far he could push things and ultimately arrived at the Haptic Compass, which he says roughly simulates the magnetic orientation in migrating birds. To do that, Eric made use of a digital compass, twelve vibrating pager motors and, of course, an Arduino, all of which got brought together in belt form. Postbox e-mail app enters public beta
Developer Postbox says it has opened up beta testing of its self-named e-mail software, which can now be downloaded by the public. The app said to differ from most e-mail clients by cataloging all content within a user's e-mail, including links and attachments. This enables a user to not only search for general keywords but filter by categories, such as imagery or documents.

Explay Colibri pico projector promises 70-inch images at SVGA resolution
Explay has been one of the early proponents of pico projectors, and it looks like the company is not showing any signs of abandoning the form anytime soon, with it now set to officially introduce its new, even smaller Colibri model at Mobile World Congress next week. Fujitsu tests e-newspapers at Japanese cafe
We've already seen restaurants with touch-sensitive tables and 3D menus, so it's just natural for Fujitsu to explore the possibility of installing e-newspapers into popular cafes. Well, kids, it looks like the Asus Eee PC 1000HE has started making the rounds and so far the reviews have been rather favorable. PC Review was so taken by the machine, in fact, that they declared it the "best one yet dethron[ing] the MSI Wind as the leader of the pack." Their enthusiasm is stoked by the fact that the machine's been designed around its new six-cell battery (making for something less bulky than, say, the 10-inch Aspire One or the NC10-14GB). Mozilla joins in EU action against Microsoft
Mozilla is throwing its support behind a European Commission ruling on bundling Microsoft's Internet Explorer with Windows, according to the company's CEO. Apple to build TVs? Part XVII
The "Apple is going to make TVs" thing is alive and well with Piper's Gene Munster speculating that the $500 million deal with LG means that Apple is going to sell the whole package.
On paper, it makes sense. Apple likes All-in-ones (see iMac). Apple is spending a great deal of cash on LCDs for just its Cinema Displays, iMacs and laptop screens? Maybe there is some additional motivation in there, right? Everyone is going digital now - analog TV is dying.

Archos to release Android phone / tablet
We're guessing we'll hear more about this at MWC, but TI just let loose a press release crowing about Archos's use of the OMAP3 processor in an upcoming "Internet Media Tablet" that runs on Android and also doubles as a phone. No pictures yet, but the spec sheet makes it sound like a hotrodded Archos 5: five-inch screen, up to a 500GB hard drive, a battery capable of 7 seven hours of video playback, and Flash support, all in a package just 10mm (.39 inches) thick. The underlying OS will be Android, but Archos plans to really beef up the media features -- there's even mention of HD video playback. So wie unzählige andere Wertpapiere musste auch Apples Aktie in den vergangenen Monaten spürbar nachgeben und verlor deutlich an Wert. Google Sync debuts for iPhone, Windows Mobile and SyncML devices
Google just announced a new service for pushing Gmail contacts and Google Calendar updates to mobile devices. For iPhone and Windows Mobile devices Google is using Exchange ActiveSync -- they can only push one-way to the device, and there are other limitations due to the beta nature of the service -- for devices that support SyncML (a vendor list is here) the service works both ways. Google Sync works automatically, and replaces all existing contact and calendar information on the device, so sync-er beware. Google Apps users can enable the service per domain. Amazon stellt die zweite Kindle-Generation vor
Amazon hat heute die zweite Generation seines E-Book-Readers Kindle vorgestellt. Hauchdünn und nur knapp 300 Gramm schwer, erinnert die Rückseite des neuen Modells mit den abgerundeten Kanten nun etwas an den iPod touch oder das iPhone. Amazon bietet in den USA bereits 230.000 Bücher für das mit einem 6" E-Ink-Display ausgestattete Gerät an, 1500 davon lassen sich gleichzeitig auf den dafür vorgesehenen 1,4 Gigabyte Gerätespeicher unterbringen.
Wann Amazon das Kindle in Europa auf den Markt bringen beziehungsweise Bücher in zusätzlichen Sprachen veröffentlichen wird, steht leider weiterhin in den Sternen. Just last Friday HP finally released the installer for MIE, its clever and clean version of Ubuntu, and, though we warned about running it on anything but a Mini 1000, Dan from Dan's Web threw caution (and whatever was currently installed on his netbook) to the wind and tried it on an Aspire One. CeBIT: Navigon-Navi versteht Umgangssprache
Mit Professional Voice Command wird Navigon auf der CeBIT eine Funktion für Navigationsgeräte vorstellen, die die Spracheingabe in vollständigen, frei formulierten Sätzen ermöglicht und nicht nur auf die Spracheingabe in Form einzelner Wörter wie "lauter", "leiser" oder "Karte" setzt. Das gilt für die Menüsteuerung und die Lautstärkeeingabe. So erhöht Professional Voice Command die Lautstärke beispielsweise, wenn der Fahrer den Satz "Ich höre nichts!" oder "Ich fühle mich mit Stufe 8 besonders wohl!" ausspricht. Intel stellt Chipproduktion in Shanghai ein
Intel hat die Schließung seiner Chipfertigung in Shanghai angekündigt. "Wir konsolidieren unsere Fertigungsstätten in China im Rahmen der vor wenigen Wochen angekündigten Sparmaßnahmen", erklärte Intel-Sprecher Chuck Mulloy. Intel reduziert Preise für Solid State Drives
Intel hat die Preise für seine Solid State Drives um bis zu 34 Prozent gesenkt. Dell verliert weiter Marktanteile
Nachdem Dell bereits 2006 beim weltweiten PC-Absatz von HP überholt wurde, verlor der ehemalige Branchenprimus nun Marktanteile in den USA. Intel reduziert Preise für Solid State Drives
Intel hat die Preise für seine Solid State Drives um bis zu 34 Prozent gesenkt. Die 160-GByte-Version der für Notebooks und Desktops konzipierten Produktreihe X25-M, die erst seit Ende Dezember erhältlich ist, kostet nun nur noch 765 Dollar statt 945 Dollar. Apple dementiert Facebook-Sperre
Die am vergangenen Wochenende bekannt gewordene Facebook-Sperre in einigen US-amerikanischen Apple-Stores ist offenbar auf eigenmächtiges Handeln einiger Store-Manager zurückzuführen. Intels Quad-Core-Itanium verschiebt sich weiter
Beinahe die gesamte Computerwelt spricht x86. In manchen Segmenten nutzt man jedoch aus unterschiedlichen Gründen einen anderen Befehlssatz, so zum Beispiel Intel bei der wohl etwas unglücklichen Itanium-Serie, die als High-End-Server-CPU gedacht ist. Im Moment scheint man mit dieser aber nicht so wirklich voran zu kommen.

Passwortverwaltung verknüpft Dateien mit Kennworteinträgen
Mit Password Depot 4 hat AceBIT eine neue Version seiner Passwortverwaltung auf den Markt gebracht. In Version 4 können neben Kennwörtern und Benutzernamen auch Dateien an Kennworteinträge angehängt werden. So lassen sich beispielsweise Rechnungen, Dokumente mit Produktkeys und andere beliebige Dateien verschlüsselt mit einem Kennworteintrag aufbewahren. Der Zugriff auf die Kennwörter erfolgt per Masterkennwort, das nur der Anwender selbst kennt. URLs und Kommentare, die zu einem Kennwort-Eintrag gehören, werden mit der Password Depot 4 im Arbeitsspeicher des Computers verschlüsselt, um das Auslesen dieser Informationen zu verhindern. Kleiner Teilerfolg von Psystar gegen Apple
Erst am 9. November diesen Jahres beginnt der Prozess des Klon-Herstellers Psystar gegen Apple. Im juristischen Vorgeplänkel konnte Psystar nun einen kleinen Punktsieg für sich beanspruchen, der allerdings noch keine Aussage zulässt, wie gut die Chancen gegen Apple tatsächlich stehen. Richter William Alsup hat nun die Fortführung der Gegenklage des Klon-Herstellers gestattet, außerdem könne Psystar behaupten, Apple würde Mac OS X an die eigene Hardware binden und damit Copyright-Gesetze verletzen.

Im Web-2.0-Zeitalter sollte man meinen, einem rasanten Wachstum Apples stünden alleine schon die zwei Vokale im Firmennamen im Wege, doch Irrtum: Apple taucht auf der Liste der 25 am schnellsten wachsenden Technologie-Firmen in den USA auf. Psystar in rare win vs. Apple. Will Apple Cloning be allowed?
Oh noes! The tables have turned against Apple in its fight against Psystar and its anonymous, loaded silent partners. Gregg Keiser (who has been following the case closely) from Computerworld Reports:
A federal judge last week ruled that Psystar Corp. can continue its countersuit against Apple Inc., giving the Mac clone maker a rare win in its seven-month-old battle with Apple. He also hinted that if Psystar proves its allegations, others may then be free to sell computers with Mac OS X already installed.

Bisher gab es den Phenom II nur mit vier Kernen und anfangs zu Preisen deutlich über 200 Euro. AMD ändert das jetzt und bringt das selbe Die mit verschiedenen Cache-Größen und auch mit einem abgeschalteten Kern auf den Markt. Gedacht sind die Prozessoren für den neuen Sockel AM3, der aber noch keine Vorteile bringt - aber auch keine Nachteile. (Prozessor, AMD)

Verizon vs. AT&T
So AT&T mobility workers might be going on strike at any moment. If you've ever had to deal with any AT&T reps about iPhone issues, you know these aren't very happy, well compensated folks (by and large).
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) union has voted, with a huge 85 percent yes vote, to authorize a strike for over 20,000 unionized AT&T Mobility employees. If union leaders do not come to terms with AT&T, the strike could begin as soon as today in 37 states where contracts are set to expire at 12:01 am tomorrow, February 8th.
On the other side of the fence, you have the Verizon crew, who seem a bit happier. Anyone else wish that Verizon had accepted Apple's initial offer to put the iPhone on their network?
