Seagate Barracuda 7200.11: 1.5TB of love

You know, we're not actually certain we want to trust 1.5TB of our precious precious NES ROMS invaluable work data to a single drive, but that doesn't mean Seagate's latest Barracuda isn't droolworthy regardless. The jump from 1TB to 1.5TB is the " largest capacity hard drive jump in the more than half-century history of hard drives," according to Seagate, and the the perpendicular-recording drives should begin shipping in August. Lieferengpass bei Swisscom nicht ausgeschlossen
Die Swisscom schliesst nicht aus, dass es zu einem Lieferengpass kommen kann, für die Vorreservierungen solle der aktuelle Gerätebestand aber reichen. iPhone bringing iTunes store to many more countries
As the iPhone 3G circles the globe over the next 24 hours, more and more stores will begin opening up. Distorted Loop points out that Apple is leaving a trail of stores all over the world. Eventually there will be over 70. And they will have iPhone and iPod Apps stores. But will these iTunes stores carry any more products? Some international movies?

Firmware 2.0 : First Steps
Tested as soon it was released, the firmware 2.0 was installed successfully on an Orange iPhone. The update was performed without problem as well as activation and transfer of original parameters and preferences.
The AppStore is fully functional, but we did not try it yet. It is perfectly integrated in the iPhone GUI, making it easy and very user friendly, once more Apple released a perfect user-experience. The free application "Remote" transforming your iPhone or iPod Touch into an Apple Remote will most likely be a hit.
LAst but not least, if you own a jail-breaked iPhone v1.0, or any SIM-unlocked iPhone, do not perform the firmware update immediately, wait couple of days for having some feedbacks from the web, we will provide them as soon as they become available.

BTW, Ziphone doesn't work on 2.0
In case you were wondering, we gave it a shot. Updated the iPhone to 2.0, ran Ziphone, and it crashed. Then we downgraded to 1.4, reran Ziphone and we are back in business. iPhone 1.4 business. Zibri how long are we going to have to wait?

All NVIDIA 8400M / 8600M chips faulty?

GadgetsNVIDIA's stock took a pretty big hit last week when it announced that "significant quantities" of "previous-generation" GPUs and mobile and communications processors were defective and that it would take a $250M charge against earnings to repair and replace the affected chips, but the company didn't say which chips specifically were faulty, nor how many. Italian consumer champs file iPhone anti-trust complaint

Italy's anti-trust agency has begun gathering information on iPhone distribution, but hasn't yet begun a full anti-trust investigation, following reception of the complaint from the Movimento Difesa del Cittadino (MDC).
Both Italian carriers offer the same prices on an unlocked version of the iPhone - €499 for the 8GB model and €599 for the 16GB.

Wenn morgen das iPhone 3G in 21 Ländern in den Läden verfügbar sein wird, müssen die meisten Kunden einen Vertrag mit einem Mobilfunkanbieter abschließen, um das Gerät mitnehmen zu können. Doch in fünf Ländern ist alles anders, dort lässt sich auch ein sogenanntes PrePaid-Gerät erstehen. Nur in Belgien ist dieses allerdings auch ohne SIM-Lock-Sperre. Apple has introduced its MobileMe service, and also offered an update for the Apple TV to enable iPhone remote controls and Mobile Me support, and for business users, the company has also this morning introduced the iPhone Configuration Utility for Mac and Windows.
The 2.29MB configuration utility lets you set up configuration profiles and install provisioning profiles as well as applications, and lets you get information about iPhones, including their console logs.

RIM 'struggling' with Thunder touch controls
Apple may have a huge big massive hit on its hands in the form of the iPhone - but Research In Motion's fight back plan may be falling apart, an analyst said this morning.
Nomura analyst Richard Windsor has warned clients that Research In Motion is struggling to develop the touch interface for use within its forthcoming 'iPhone killer', the BlackBerry Thunder. The analyst says the implementation even lags behind Nokia (who we think themselves are trailing Apple on touch controls).
"Those who have handled prototypes complain of poor typing, unresponsive keys, bugs in the user interface cause by touch as well as accelerometer issues," Windsor said, as reported by MarketWatch.

Asus verkauft weniger Eee PCs als erwartet
Wie das Branchenportal Digitimes berichtet, hat Asus in der ersten Jahreshälfte 2008 1,7 Millionen Eee PCs verkauft. Damit liegt der Hersteller unter seinem avisierten Ziel von 2 Millionen Geräten. Version 7.7 unterstützt neben dem iPhone 3G auch den Kauf von Software in dem ebenfalls für diese Woche angekündigten App Store. Apple meint es heute mehr als gut mit uns und wir kommen mit dem Aktualisieren der einzelnen Geräte schon gar nicht mehr hinterher: Auch für Apple TV ist ein Softwareupdate verfügbar. With iTunes 7.7 now available, the AppStore is accessible and already open. You can directly access it from iTunes or from the following link.
The Mobile.me dedicated website is also up and running: me.com.

Es ist vollbracht: Die Umstellung von .Mac auf MobileMe ist in diesen Minuten geschehen. Mit zweistündiger Verzögerung arbeitete Apple noch bis um 11 Uhr MEZ an der Umstellung. Nun soll alles perfekt sein. Wer bereits über eines der 79 Euro teuren Pakete verfügt, kann MobileMe ab sofort nutzen.

Unter Berufung auf eine Datenerhebung von Nielsen Mobile berichtet Ars Technica, dass die Nutzung des Internets über tragbare Geräte wie Mobiltelefone die “kritische Masse” erreicht habe. Dem Report zu Folge haben im Mai 2008 15.6 Prozent aller Kunden mit Mobilfunkverträgen auch das mobile Internet regelmäßig auf Ihren Geräten genutzt. Insgesamt verfügen 95 Millionen Menschen in den USA über Mobilfunkverträge, bei denen Sie auch für die Nutzung des mobilen Internets zahlen, nicht alle davon nutzen es allerdings regelmäßig. In Großbritannien und Italien nutzen 12.9 respektive 11.9 Prozent aller Anwender mit entsprechenden Mobilfunkverträgen auch das mobile Internet. Dreamworks to Adopt Intel hardware
Animation movies are a business where requirements for powerful computer resources are huge, and remain a key factor. Dreamworks just announced that it will shift from AMD-based hardware to Intel models. According to sources, Larrabee might have been the decision-making factor. This future system for video display and 3D rendering looks very promising. However when looking at the specs, Larrabee is a (big) evolution of the original Pentium CPU, adapted to 64-bits instruction with its MMX core revisited towards a more modern and effective SSE version. Last but not least, while being originally engraved at 600 nm and clocked at couple of hundreds MHz, the CPU which will be the core of Larrabee will be obtained from 45-nm process and clocked at 2 GHz.

Fujitsu not Interested by SSD yet
Source : ElectronistaIn a recent interview, Joel Hagberg, Fujitsu business development VP, announced that the company has no short-term plans to create solid-state hard drives (SSDs) under its own brand name. To justify such statement, he went on and reviewed specification and performance of current SSDs models:
- most SSDs are very efficient for random access for reading data, but performance drops significantly when writing or reading large amounts of data in a row.

iPhone: O2 Faced 13000 Pre-Orders Request Peaks per second

This initiative did not last more than couple of hours, as the dedicated website was quickly saturated and the stock of iPhone 3G run out. All GeForce 8400 and 8600 Are Faulty!?
Couple of days ago, we reported that the defective NVidia mobile GPU should apparently not affect Apple hardware, as only the GF 8500M would be affected. Yesterday, an article published by The Inquirer reported that all, and not only selected production lots, of GeForce 8400 AND 8600 GPU graphic cards are affected by the heat-related failures due to an unidentified material used in GPU fabrication process. It would not only be restricted to the mobile version of those GPUs (8400M and 8600M), but although include the desktop version drived from the G84 and G86 cores. Despite NVidia's claims, that only HP products are affected one can expect other notebook and desktop models from Dell, ASUS PCs, as well as Apple, to be affected by this faulty chipset issue.

ARD und ZDF werden ihre Berichterstattung zu den Olympischen Sommerspielen Usern per Live-Stream zugänglich machen. Nachdem es in den letzten Tagen immer wieder hieß, iTunes 7.7 wäre bald verfügbar, ist es nun endlich soweit. Seit kurzem bietet die Software-Aktualisierung die neue Version des Musikverwaltungsprogramms an, die vor allem auf das iPhone 3G zugeschnitten ist. Unter der neuen Rubrik "Programme" in der Mediathek finden sich nun die iPod-Spiele sowie wahrscheinlich bald schon auch die im App Store erworbenen Programme. .Mac momentan nicht erreichbar und MobileMe verzögert sich etwas

Gegenüber USA Today gab Apple bekannt, dass zum Start des App Stores 500 Applikationen von Entwicklern zum Kauf angeboten werden. Bei einem Drittel der Programme handelt es sich um Spiele, insgesamt stehen 125 kostenlose Anwendungen zum Download bereit. 90% der restlichen Anwendungen kosten 9,99 US$ oder weniger.

Bis 10 Uhr soll MobileMe aktiviert sein, schrieb Apple auf der .Mac-Status-Seite. Seit ca. 3 Uhr in der Nacht ist .Mac nicht mehr erreichbar. Of course, this could be explained in any number of ways including a downturn in the global economy and those consumers who skipped past the Eee PC 900 in favor of the Atom-based Eee PC 901. After the outcry caused by the announced prices of the subscriptions accompanying the iPhone in Canada, Rogers tries to take again the upper hand by proposing an option making it possible to benefit from an additional 6 GB of download for "only" $CAN 30.
This offer may appear generous when one forgets that the basic tariff remains crippling, and that in many countries (France for one) the data download is unlimited (even though the download speed can fall quickly).

Kodak's got a new one for the semi-casual point-and-shoot crowd, the EasyShare Z1015 IS. The 10 megapixel Z-series camera manages a 15x optical zoom, a 3-inch LCD, HD footage at 720p and 30 fps, and Kodak's Perfect Touch processing. Naturally the IS implies optical image stabilization, but the 6400 ISO should help out in the shaking department as well if grain is not an issue, and full manual controls should help out all the in-betweens. 500 electric Minis to go on sale in California

It's not quite official yet, but Automotive News is reporting that BMW is planning on offering some 500 all-electric Minis for sale in California. The main assembly of the silver hatchbacks with yellow roofs (apart from the drivetrain) will be completed in Oxford, England, with the batteries and motor installed in Munich. After arriving in the US, just 490 lucky Golden Staters will be able to pick one up -- the other 10 will be show cars. Since BMW hasn't formally announced the plan yet, there's no word on pricing or availability, but something tells us there's not going to be any shortage of buyers when these things hit the streets.[Via
