Eee PC 901, 904, and 1000 get UK pricing

We still think ASUS should cut the number of available Eee laptops down to something a little more reasonable, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon -- the company just made with UK pricing on the 901, 904, and 1000. The Atom-based 901 will come in at £299 ($592), while the slower 904 (which is essentially a 900 in the 1000's body) will set you back £269 ($533). The Atom-based 10-inch 1000 itself will run £349 ($691) for an 80GB hard drive version or £369 ($731) for a 40GB SSD edition.

A major fault with the DNS servers has been plugged
Source : http://securosis.comWe have learned today that a very serious fault concerning the DNS have been plugged.
The DNS (Domain Name System) are servers charged to create pointers to the Internet address of the server hosting the site in question. They remove the obligation from you to type the IP address if you want, for example, to reach the site www.hardmac.com.
To return to the fault, it would have been possible for a hacker to reach the cache of the servers and thus to modify the pointers associated with each address.
If it had been exploited, which was not the case, one could have had perfect phishing, since nothing would have shown that you had, for example, reached a false version of the site of your bank and subsequently provided identifier and password.
All providers of these DNS servers have worked together, in secret, and have all issued fixes for this major fault simultaneously today.

ITM Power shows off in-home hydrogen fueling station

Apple dominating US touch phone market
Apple should already the clear market leader in the US for touchscreen phones by the end of the year, a new study claims from Strategy Analytics. Lamborghini-branded ASUS ZX1 said to be canceled

The all-new iPhone 3G is compelling enough to tempt many pay-as-you-go mobile phone users to take out a contract, new research shows.
GfK NOP carried out its research last weekend among UK consumers, and found that 16 per cent of pre-pay users would consider taking the new handset on a contract.
Furthermore, of that 16 per cent, two-thirds prefer one of the 18-month contracts over the pre-pay offer, indicating that the device has the potential to move customers toward long-term contracts.

California beware, iTunes tax law threat returns
Wake-up, California - your iTunes prices are under attack (again).
That's right - assemblyman Charles Calderon is back with another attempt to levy a tax on digital downloads, just two months after Californian voter anger saw his last attempt to do the same thing chucked out with a vengeance. In April, the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee on a bipartisan vote rejected a legislative proposal to extend California's sales and use tax to digital property.
So what's this guy pushing for this time (other than more money for the government)? Turns out to be the same again, only this time split into two parts, presumably on the basis that if one set of rules is approved, it will set some kind of precedent to more easily force through this tax. (Not that we're lawyers, not that we're Californians, even, but we do know that's how bureaucrats like to force through that awful system

Rogers offers Canada $30/month 6GB data plan
Rogers Wireless has bowed slightly to public pressure, introducing a $30 per month 6GB data plan to allay some of the criticism the carrier's been facing over its iPhone tariffs.
The carrier will also open up six of its Candian retail stores at 8am on July 11 to sell the iPhone 3G. Customers attending launch day events at these Rogers Plus stores will be treated to a free early bird breakfast and have a chance to win Rogers Wireless prizes.
Effective July 11, and as a limited time promotional offer for customers who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of 6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any in-market voice plan.

Last.fm offers indie acts sweet streaming deal
Last.fm has introduced a royalty scheme for unsigned acts, offering independent artists the chance to accrue royalties from Last.fm each time their track is listened to through the site.
Unsigned and independent artists can sign up for the program when they upload their music to Last.fm, and earn revenue when their tracks are played free-on-demand, or on Last.fm’s streaming radio, or both.
Martin Stiksel, Last.fm co-founder, told Distorted Loop: “This is a big day for independent artists. We’re leveling the playing field by offering them the same opportunities as established bands to make money from their music. "

Microsoft may ship next Office for Mac by 2010
Microsoft will offer the next version of Office for the Mac by January 2011 at the latest - possibly as early as January 2010, the company said this week.
The company's Mac Business Unit's senior marketing manager, Amanda Lefebvre, also said it intends restoring support for Visual Basic for Applications in the next version, Information Week informs.
"We're on a two to three year lifecycle," she said, admitting, "We were a little beyond that for our last round."

iPhone to claim 35% of US (touchscreen) market this year
Apple's iPhone 3G will grab 35 per cent of the US market for touchscreen-equipped mobile phones by the end of the year, new research claims.
Bonny Joy, analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “We estimate the Apple iPhone will account for 6.3 million of the 18.1 million touchscreen phones sold in the United States during January to December 2008, for an impressive 35 per cent marketshare. We got this handy little Xbox 360 Pro cheat sheet sent to us by a GameStop manager, who also forwarded it to our BFF's at Joystiq, which pretty much confirms those widely-spread suspicions of a 360 price drop. It looks to be the very real deal, and is good news for the Xbox fanboy looking to at last populate every room in his house with the charming white box, now selling at that magical $299.99 pricepoint. Obviously it's not happening until Sunday the 13th, but that should give you the requisite time to scrape together those pennies. Where to Get SIM-Unlock iPhone?
Mobistar announced that the iPhone 3G will be available in Belgium from July 11th. To comply with the law, it will be available as a SIM-unlock device subscription plan being in option (so no subsidizing): 8 GB model at 529 and 16 GB model at 619 . To prevent the gray market as well as control availability, one would not be allowed to purchase more than one iPhone per person.
Our friend Marcello from melablog.it told us that in Italy both iPhone 3G carriers, Vodafone and Tim, will offer unlock iPhone even the subsidized ones. So, one could buy a subscription-free iPhone in Italy and use it in other countries with any carrier. Prices for the iPhone in Italy from Vodafone and Tim Stores will be: 499 for the 8 GB model and 569 for the 16 GB model.

Kein Verkauf des iPhone 3G ohne Aktivierung
In einem Interview mit Bloomberg hat Apple-Retail-Chef Ron Johnson verkündet, dass das iPhone 3G beim Verkauf in einem der 185 US-Apple-Stores aktiviert werden muss. Obwohl bereits 1998 eingestellt, hat der Apples PDA Newton noch heute Fans, die ihn am Leben erhalten. Neueinsteiger der Mac-Szene werden ihn nur vom Hörensagen kennen, den legendären Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) namens Newton aus dem Hause Apple. Das für heutige Verhältnisse überdimensionale Message Pad besaß einen großen Touchscreen und verfügte über eine lernfähige Handschriftenerkennung. GM dropping Volt's range from 600 to 360 miles

The gas tank in the Chevy Volt is probably the least interesting thing about GM's hybrid concept, but it's causing some waves today, with reports that GM is trimming it in size, effectively dropping the vehicle's range from 600 miles to some 360. Apparently GM found that consumers rarely travel more than 40 miles a day (the range of the Volt's battery pack) and that longer trips didn't require a 600 mile range because "most bladders can't go 600 miles" -- so cutting down the 12-gallon fuel tank saves weight and cost. Studie: User fürchten Datenmissbrauch zu Werbezwecken
Wie aus einer aktuellen Erhebung von Fittkau & Maaß Consulting hervorgeht, fürchten fast 70 Prozent von 101.926 befragten deutschsprachigen Internetnutzern eine Weitergabe ihrer Daten zu Werbezwecken. 57 Prozent gehen davon aus, dass Informationen gezielt ausspioniert werden können, und 14 Prozent sind aus anderen Gründen misstrauisch. Keine Bedenken haben nur sehr wenige Nutzer - acht Prozent halten die herrschenden Datenschutzbestimmungen für streng, fünf Prozent vertrauen auf die technischen Standards zur Sicherung ihrer Daten.

NVidia Will Support PhysX for AMD/ATI Radeon?
Source : TGdailyCouple of weeks ago, we reported about AMD joining Intel's project Havok, leaving NVidia alone with its physic engine PhysX. Half a month ago, a guy from Israel, Eran Badit editor-in-chief of NGOHQ.com, claimed making progress in getting NVidias CUDA platform and PhysX to run on AMD/ATI Radeon cards. Such news was rapidly denied and even some IT news websites were stamping it as a hoax. However, Eran Badit now confirms that he is receiving support from NVidia to get PhysX to run on AMD/ATI cards, this includes access to documentation, SDKs and hands on help.
It seems that such change in NVidia's decision might be driven by the requirement to push CUDA and its GPU accelerated physics using PhysX, in order to give most users and developers access to this technology in order to face Intel's and AMD's Havok project. This is probably the only way for NVidia to allow the adoption of CUDA and PhysX as a new standar

Towards the End of Stereo Audio-In in Computers?
If such info would come on April 1st, we would then think it is a joke, but today is July 09th, and the story originates from the RIAA, an organization not really known for its sense of humor. According to Electronista, The RIAA is pushing PC makers to limit or disable stereo recording support in computers. As usual with the RIAA, the reason is a new attempt to discourage piracy and prevent illegal copy by closing off analog-to-digital recording. According to the several sources, it would be the reason why hardware models from Dell, Gateway and Packard-Bell are only allowed single-channel recording out of the box.
The quoted companies did not release an official explanation for the artificially disabled stereo support or the need to pay additional fee for a fix (99 USD).

iPhone 3G: Die ersten Reviews aus USA
In den drei auflagenstärksten US-Zeitungen sind heute die ersten Reviews zum neuen iPhone 3G erschienen. Bahnbrechende neue Erkenntnisse suchen wir in den Artikeln von Walt Mossberg (Wall Street Journal), Ed Baig (USA Today) und David Pogue (New York Times) jedoch vergeblich. Die Autoren sind sich im Großen und Ganzen einig darin, dass das iPhone mit dem neuen Modell ein nettes Upgrade erfährt und durch die Erweiterung um UMTS und GPS Schritt mit der aktuellen technischen Entwicklung hält. Dies allerdings mit dem Manko des höheren Stromverbrauchs und der dadurch sinkenden Akkuleistung.

Spätestens übermorgen erhalten wir mit dem iTunes-Update auf Version 7.7 einen neuen Eintrag in der Quellenliste.

Samsung's low-power 128GB SSDs go mass production on the cheap

Good news on the SSD front. Samsung is now mass producing its 1.8- and 2.5-inch SSDs in both 64GB and 128GB capacities. 3G iPhone reviewed, nothing learned
NYTimes (Pogue), WSJ (Mossberg) and USAToday (Baig) all got their mitts on the 3G iPhone. Amazingly, not one of them had anything original to say. Nothing you couldn't make up by looking at the specs or images of the iPhone.
Bottom line: If you’ve been waiting to buy an iPhone until it dropped in price, or ran on faster cell networks, you might want to take the plunge, if you can live with the higher service costs and the weaker battery life.
Baig's insights: Doesn't work with Firewire docs. Audio Quality better for calls and songs through speaker. Geotagging pictures is gool. GPS functionality works better - but could have driving instructions. B

Microsoft plant Anti-Apple-Kampagne
Geschichte wiederholt sich, aber für die eigenen Verhältnisse ist Microsoft geradezu blitzschnell erwacht: Vista wird eher frostig aufgenommen, während sich Apple auch noch über die Schwächen des jüngsten Windows-Betriebssystems in der "Get a Mac"-Kampagne lustig macht. Diese läuft schon eine ganze Weile und mittlerweile scheint sich auch in Redmond die Erkenntnis durchgesetzt zu haben, dass sie irgendwie nicht gegen rot-weiße Bälle, Pinguine oder abstrakten Nachbildungen des höchsten japanischen Bergs gerichtet sind, sondern eben gegen Windows.

Apple und Rogers doch nicht im Streit?
Es wäre zugegebenermaßen schade um eine fast "Denver Clan"-mäßige Seifenoper: Nachdem das iPhone nur in Geschäften von Rogers und nicht in den kanadischen Apple Stores erhältlich sein sollte, kamen Gerüchte auf, dass Apple den kanadischen iPhone-Vertrieb bewusst abstrafen wolle. Rogers kam durch die vergleichsweise lange Vertragsdauer (drei Jahre) und angeblich schlechtere Konditionen als bei AT&T in den USA - allerdings lassen sich Mobilfunktarife der einzelnen Länder nur schwer vergleichen.
