Bomb disposal robots get new life sniffing out chemicals

It's not the first time a robot has been given fresh life with a new career, but it's always nice to see bots saved from the scrap heap, which is just what the Army's 95th Chemical Company has done with some PackBot-based bots that were once busy disposing of bombs in Iraq. Sony cutting 80GB PS3 price to $400 in September, ditching backwards compatibility

Sony just announced at E3 that it's cutting the price of the 80GB PS3 to $400 in September. Unlike the outgoing 80 gigger, the new model doesn't have backwards compatibility, though -- so it's really more like the the 40GB PS3 is getting a capacity bump. That also means that the 80GB PS3 now costs the same as a 60GB 360 and an Xbox Live membership, which should make the decision a little harder for some people. We're also wondering if that's the end of the line for PS3 backwards compatibility entirely -- we have a feeling launch consoles are about to get a little more precious.

iPhone 3G: Our Review
As we already mentioned it, the iPhone 3G will not be available in France before July 17th, so we got our sample from Belgium where the law forces Mobistar to offer it as a subscription-free device. We decided to queue with other consumers in front of an APR, Macline, and due to shortage only the "White" 16 GB model was available.
We then tested the 3G model with the first generation iPhone:
Once activated, both model worked flawlessly with both SFR and Orange SIM cards. Having an SIM unlocked iPhone makes it possible to choose you carrier, as well as using pre-paid SIM card when you are visiting other countries for business or holidays; avoiding roaming costs.

Apple has released firmware version 1.1.5 for the iPod touch. The new software is meant as an update for iPod touch users who choose not to purchase the $9.99 iPhone 2.0 Software Update for the iPod touch. Apple sues Psystar
Apple has finally sued Psystar, the maker of the OpenMac 'er OpenComputers that run the Mac OS. Psystar had been taunting Apple for months saying that a lawsuit wouldn't hold up in court. The Mac community was extremely suprised that Apple didn't sick their Lawyer hounds on them. Nintendo announces the Wii MotionPlus at E3

We knew this one was coming, but we didn't know the details. Nintendo busted out the new MotionPlus Wiimote add-on at its E3 keynote today. The device, which attaches to the rear of the controller, will be used to tighten up and refine motion sensing on the Wii, and its tweaks will be levied in a new game that will be shipping with it called Wii Sports Resort. The console-maker says the MotionPlus brings 1:1 sensing to the Wii, which will enable detailed control heretofore unseen on the system. SSDs doch effizienter als angenommen
Solid State Disks (SSD) sind mittlerweile die besten Kandidaten für einen Festplattenersatz und werden vor allem als besonders stromsparend beworben. Genau dieses Werbeargument aber widerlegten vor einiger Zeit die Autoren von Tom's hardware. Sie kamen bei der Prüfung des Stromverbrauchs einer Notebook-SSD im Vergleich zu einer herkömmlichen Festplatte zu unerwarteten Ergebnissen. Doch die Messungen des damaligen Tests stellten sich jetzt als falsch heraus: wie Tom's selbst zugibt, ist den Autoren bei der Messung ein schwerwiegender Fehler unterlaufen. In Wahrheit sind SSDs also tatsächlich stromsparender als gedacht.

Apple avoids UK iTunes price promise
Six months after making a promise to harmonise prices in order to stave off EU action, Apple has elected not to cut UK iTunes prices in order to bring them into line with those across the rest of Europe.
The company says that changing exchange rates have actually bought UK prices roughly into line with those across the rest of Europe.
Apple in January said it would reduce the prices it charges UK music fans for song purchases through iTunes. This was after a European Commission enquiry exploring collusion between Apple and the majors over how iTunes works in Europe.
At the time, Europe’s competition commissioner Neelie Kroes said: "The Commission is very much in favour of solutions which allow consumers to benefit from a truly single market for music downloads."

C'mon now -- you saw this one coming down the road, didn't you? Apple has officially taken legal action against Mac clone-maker Psystar, according to court documents. On July 3rd, the Cupertino giant filed suit in the federal district court of nothern California alleging violations against its shrink wrap license, trademarks, and copyright infringement. Clearly this doesn't look real promising for the Florida-based cloner, but we're confident they'll handle this situation with the tact and aplomb we've come to expect from them. Which is none.

iPhone Software 2.1 update looms?
Looks like Apple's already cooking-up a swift update for the iPhone 2.0 software it shipped Friday, with one report claiming to have seen website traffic requests emanating from systems that ID themselves as 2.1.
Sure, this isn't hard and fast evidence, but what makes it even more interesting is that requests identified as coming from these purported patched 'phones all seem to emanate from the area around Cupertino and Atlanta (Apple and AT&T HQ, respectively), at least that's what the Boy Genius is saying.

Nehalem to Be Compatible with NVidia SLI!?
Source : Hardware.frIf the SLI has been for a long time restricted to hardcore gamers, the availability of CUDA has changed the environment, and SLI could become a way to increase GPU performance without offering faster GPUs. It seems that NVidia could accept to license its SLI technology to third-party, and not restrict it only to AMD processor-dedicated motherboards, but open it to Nehalem-compatible motherboards.
However, it will of course not be easy. To have the SLI functional on a non-NVidia branded motherboard, one will need an extra chips on the board. In addition to the R&D costs linked to its integration, this chips will be priced 30 USD. So for the time being, NVidia decided to lock the SLI via a hardware protection, instead of licensing the technology to third parties at the firmware level which could have been simpler to implement in existing and future chipsets. Apple must wake up as its front room media solution-cum-hobby, Apple TV is under attack
Microsoft has announced a new deal with Netflix under which the latter service will offer Xbox LIVE users who are also members of Netflix Gold free access to over 10,000 films and a multitude of TV shows - all directly through the Xbox.
From the Netflix website, members simply add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will be automatically displayed on the TV screen via Xbox 360 and available to watch instantly.
It's a significant move that underlines the additional value you get from using TV-connected console systems, rather than more limited streaming boxes (such as the Roku Netflix box that's now available).

Intel bringing quad-core CPUs to laptops next month?
Filed under: LaptopsWhispers in the hallways of George Washington CPU High School indicate that Intel is primed to release a batch of quad-core laptop processors next month. There apparently isn't a ton of info on the happening right now, though Pioneer Computers (an Australian PC maker) is currently taking orders on a system equipped with a 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme chip, the QX9300. Of course, one of Intel's regional marketing managers in Singapore, Sujan Kamran, says that, "We're bringing quad-core to mobile in August," so, uh not a lot of mystery left, is there?

GeForce GTX: Even Cheaper!
NVidia is crossing a difficult period. the new Radeon have captured much more market share than originally expected, and NVidia had to cut prices of the GeForce GTX for the second time in less than a month.
The new prices are:
- GF GTX 280, the flagship model costs now 499 USD instead of 699 USD when it was launched.
- GF GTX 260 costs "only" 299 USD, instead of 399 USD at launch (33% cheaper).
In addition, the on-going issue with NVidia GF 8400 and 8600 desktop and mobile GPUs could also cost the company much more than the 200 millions USD alreadu budgetized.

Mit dem System Storage TS1130 hat IBM heute das nach eigenen Angaben derzeit schnellste 1-TByte-Bandlaufwerk vorgestellt. Die Speicherkapazität bezieht sich dabei auf die Menge an unkomprimierten Daten pro Bandkassette. Das TS1130 verfügt über eine native Datenrate von 160 MByte/s. Studie: Nutzung von Social Networking am Arbeitsplatz steigt
Wie eine Studie von Trend Micro argumentiert, nutzen immer mehr Mitarbeiter Social-Networking-Sites aus dem Unternehmensnetzwerk heraus. 1600 Anwender in Firmen aus Deutschland, Großbritannien, Japan und den USA wurden befragt. In Deutschland gaben 13 Prozent (2007: 9 Prozent) an, aus dem Unternehmensnetzwerk heraus Social-Networking-Sites zu besuchen. In Großbritannien stieg die Zahl von 11 Prozent im Jahr 2007 auf 27 Prozent im Jahr 2008.

MobileMe-Nutzer wollen Geld zurück
Reibungslos scheint bei Apple momentan kaum etwas zu klappen. Neben den Schwierigkeiten mit der neuen iPhone 2.0 Software haben vor allem Nutzer des ehemaligen .Mac-Dienstes allen Grund sich zu beklagen. Mit dem Umzug auf die neue MobileMe-Plattform gingen so einige Probleme einher, die Kunden das Leben schwer machten. In den USA geht die Aufregung sogar so weit, dass einige nun ihr Geld zurück verlangen und Apple schwere Versäumnisse vorwerfen.

Kostenloses Sicherheitsupdate für iPod touch: Firmware 1.1.5
Zusammen mit der iPhone 2.0-Firmware gab es auch für den iPod touch vergangene Woche ein Update, für das Nutzer allerdings knapp 8 Euro auf den Tisch legen müssen. Groß war deshalb die Verärgerung, als bekannt wurde, dass das Update auch zahlreiche Sicherheitsmängel behebt. Jetzt besserte Apple nach und veröffentlichte die kostenlose iPod-touch-Software 1.1.5.

Zahl der Musik-Downloads in Deutschland leicht gesunken
Wie Forschungsgruppe Wahlen Online in einer telefonischen Umfrage unter mehr 3.500 Deutschen ab 18 Jahren ergeben hat, sank die Anzahl der getätigten Musik-Downloads im Vergleich zum Quartal des vorherigen Jahres um 3 Prozent. Mit Version 1.1.5 reicht Apple heute ein kostenloses iPod touch Software-Update nach, und bedient so alle User die bislang noch nicht den kostenpflichtigen Sprung auf Firmware 2.0 hinter sich haben. Nvidia senkt Preise für GTX-280-Grafikchips
Nur knapp einen Monat nach der Markteinführung seiner neuen High-End-Grafikchips hat Nvidia die erste Preissenkung für die Modelle GTX 280 und GTX 260 angekündigt. Statt 699 Dollar soll das Topmodell jetzt nur noch 499 Dollar kosten. Den Preis für den GTX 260 hat der Grafikkartenhersteller um 100 Dollar auf 299 Dollar gesenkt. Damit reagiert das Unternehmen auf seinen Rivalen ATI, dessen HD4870-Chips bei einem geringeren Preis eine ähnliche Leistung bieten wie Nvidias GTX 260.

T-Online läuft Sturm gegen VoIP auf dem iPhone
Die Rettung für iPhone-Kunden, die auf keinen Fall mehr als die Grundgebühr an den Magentariesen abdrücken wollen: Telefonieren per Voice over IP. Anbieter Sipgate und die dahinter stehende Firma Indigo Networks machen es möglich - allerdings höchst inoffiziell und zum Ärgernis von T-Mobile, die um abrechenbare Gesprächsminuten ihrer Kunden bangen. Der deutsche Exklusivanbieter schlug nun zurück und macht mit einer Abmahnung deutlich, was er als "geltendes T-Mobile-Recht" empfindet: Kein VoIP und vielleicht schon bald keine AIM-Dienste mehr.

BT plans 100Mbps UK broadband service by 2012, Gigabit speeds possible
British Telecom just announced its new £1.5 billion fiber fibre-based, broadband plan for the UK. By 2012, BT hopes to have "as many as 10 million homes" (about 40% of the UK) wired for service with speeds up to 100Mbps -- potentially capable of exceeding 1,000Mbps (1Gbps) at some unspecified point in the future. BT plans to deliver 100Mbps direct to new homes or 40Mbps (and possibly 60Mbps as they test new technology) to homes with a copper link to the fiber cabinet. For the plan to be implemented, BT says that a "supportive and enduring regulatory environment" is required with the removal of current barriers to fiber investment identified as a good place to start. Endet die „RadeonHD 3000“-Serie im September?
Die Radeon-HD-4000-Serie in Form der Radeon HD 4850 sowie der Radeon HD 4870 ist da und eigentlich keiner bei ATi möchte mehr an die wenig erfolgreichen Tagen der Radeon-HD-2000-Modelle denken. Eine Besserung trat bei den Radeon-HD-3000-Produkten ein, doch auch hier war man sicherlich nicht zufrieden.

10 Jahre Gracenote CD-Datenbank
Vor zehn Jahren wurde wurde die Gracenote CD-Datenbank gegründet und mit "Dark Side of the Moon" von Pink Floyd das erste Album eingepflegt. Ihr kennt Gracenote nicht? Jedes Mal, wenn iTunes beim Importen einer neuen CD die Titel aus dem Internet abruft, wird die inzwischen 90 Millionen Songs umfassende Datenbank kontaktiert und iTunes zeigt die korrekten Informationen zu Titeln und Interpret an.
Falls die Datenbank dann doch mal eine CD nicht kennt, könnt ihr die Titel manuell eingeben und direkt aus iTunes an Gracenote schicken. Apple erklärt hier, wie dies mit wenigen Schritten geschieht.

No iDisk File Sharing with MobileMe!

I was really impatient to try the iDisk file sharing function demonstrated during the WWDC keynote, as with the previous .Mac similar function it was almost not usable. I was very disappointed to notice that the function was simply NOT available on MobileMe even though it was demoed during the WWDC!! Despite the clear improvement of MobileMe when compared to .Mac, I decided to contact Apple Support, hereafter is the answer:

Thanks for your interest in iDisk file sharing, unfortunately this function is currently not available on MobileMe.
When MobileMe was announced, the iDisk file sharing was mentioned as an existing function, but on the MobileMe webpage is was stated that the list of functions is susceptible to be modified. When MobileMe became available on July 10th, the iDisk file sharing was not included.
We are sorry for this inconvenient.

US-Bundesstaaten untersuchen Yahoo-Google-Deal
Nach dem Senat und dem Justizministerium wollen nun auch mehrere US-Bundesstaaten die möglichen Auswirkungen des Werbe-Deals zwischen Yahoo und Google auf den freien Wettbewerb untersuchen. Bisher haben Florida, Arkansas und Connecticut eine Überprüfung der Zusammenarbeit zwischen den beiden Suchmaschinen angekündigt. About iPhone 3G Signal Strength
iPhone Atlas published a news about an issue we already experienced ourselves with the iPhone 3G.
As with all 3G handheld, when the 3G signal is too weak, the iPhone automatically switch to 2G. In practice, the iPhone is relatively slow to perform the transition, and sometimes when it is carried out, it has lost the signal leading to the following message:
As soon as you are one the edge of the 3G signal, then this message pops-up couple of seconds before the transition to 2G.
iPhone Atlas offers several tricks to boost the iPhone 3G signal strength, however none of them will not turn iron into gold, but can sometimes improve the reception.

Next rev MacBook Pro platform launched by Intel - Centrino 2 (Montevina)
By now it is a forgone conclusion that Apple will use Intel's latest Centrino 2 platform in its new Macbook Pro Line-up. Back when Apple used PowerPC, no one knew what chips Apple would use or when they would come out. Now that Apple is on the very transparent Intel roadmap, we know what is next. That next is the Centrino 2 line.
The code-name Montevina refers to the fifth-generation Centrino platform, now formally named Centrino 2. It was scheduled for release at Computex Taipei 2008, which took place on June 3 - 7, 2008, but was delayed until July 14, due to problems with integrated graphics and wireless certification.

Sony VAIO hands-on extravaganza

Sony really bumped out a whole lot of laptop today, but we got a chance to handle each and every one, and came away impressed -- perhaps not blown away, but Sony certainly doesn't seem to be planning on letting the likes of Lenovo run away with the PC laptop design crown. None of the laptops felt astounding light, but they did all feel rather solid to handle, as if crafted out of a single element, instead of cobbled together -- particularly the magnesium alloy-built BZ.
