iPhone activation servers back online; stock updates from around the world

It's only 4pm ET and the iPhone 3G has already had a pretty rough go of it, with most customers forced to wait for Apple's activation servers to get back online and render their devices operational. AT&T just told us that the servers are back online, though, and that activations are occuring for 3G customers -- we're guessing that means first-gen upgraders are seeing things work as well. Swisscom-Shop Wiedikon ausverkauft und geschlossen
Wie uns Kai informiert, war er heute morgen kurz vor 9 Uhr im Swisscom Shop in Zürich-Wedikon und wollte sich sein iPhone holen. Vor ihm wurde eine Dame bedient, welche sich «HAUFENWEISE (>6) iPhones» gesichert hatte - für Kai hatte es dann kein iPhone mehr. Bei der Shop-Öffnung um 06:30 seien gut 50 Personen anwesend gewesen … Lagerbestand aufgebraucht. Der Shop hatte übrigens nur am Morgen offen - denn jetzt ist er geschlossen und soll umgebaut werden.

Apple Working Hard to Increase Activation Sever Capacities for the iPhone
If Apple had planned everything, they underestimated the number of requests for Firmware 2.0-based iPhone activations, including new customers with iPhone 3G, as well as iPhone owners willing to benefit from the functions and extended possibilities packed in the the new firmware version.
As a consequence, dedicated servers were down or unaccessible for several hours, making customers frustrated as well as shop employees unable to activate newly purchased iPhone 3G.
This has especially been the case in Europe in the morning, and it did not really improve later on when US East cost citizen woke up. Several customers left shops after waiting for several minutes or long hours to get unsuccessfully their iPhone 3G activated. They will have to try it from home.
We have learned that Apple has launched a emergency plan to quickly increase the number of mirrors in order to allow iPhone 1G and 3G to download the Firmware 2.0, and later on to activate their mobile phone.

We've been sent this fix by reader, Will, we haven't tested it. If you are in iLimbo, you may want to try this to get things moving again.
"I called Apple and here are the steps to leave recovery mode:
Disconnect phone from computer
Hold down the power button & turn phone off
Wait around an hour
Press the home button, & plug in cable to computer ( don't let go of home button) When itunes comes up & says it finds a phone in discovery mode, then release the button
I tried this and it did what it was meant to, offering me the option to restore; however, I didn't go the whole way and restore it as I want to keep the v2 software till the problem is sorted. However, it may be that someone has a bricked phone and wants to at least make it useable again."

Lift your hats once again to the iPhone Dev Team, who have succesfully unlocked iPhone Software 2.0.
The team has been working on unlocking Apple's iPhone software for months, and the current build is stable and effective - a Gizmodo reporter has been using his iPhone (using beta of v.2) for a week on the Vodafone network, rather than through AT&T.
The team intends releasing a new version of its free Pwnage tool so others can unlock and jailbreak their handsets for use with unapproved applications on non-official networks.

AT&T running out of iPhones, iTunes activation overloaded, Lines moving slow
We are getting many reports in from readers having less than stellar experiences getting their 3G iPhones.hardly unexpected considering the pent-up demand. A few readers have written in to say that AT&T has given them iPhones to activate at home. Others at AT&T say that they ordered their iPhone but won't recieve it for "another few days as stocks become available."
We haven't had any reports from Apple Store customers who are running out (oops - yes we have - this one only has a few hundred left) but the activation is taking much longer than anticipated.

Yellow Tinted 3G iPhones causing concern amonst new buyers
Over at MacRumors forums, people are complaining about a yellow tint that covers the screen. Anyone else having this issue? How are you doing in the iPhone 3G screen lottery? Did someone pee on your screen?
Or is this just the new 3G iPhone's screen default "tint". Maybe Apple went with a slightly less quality screen on the 3G iPhone - or same quality - different default tint. So maybe the question should be: Does anyone have a white 3G iPhone screen? Does anyone want to buy a 2G iPhone with Whiter white? The price just went up $100
Update: there are some reports that the yellow tint burns off after some use. Is this your experience?

AT&T running out of iPhones, iTunes activation overloaded, Lines moving slow
We are getting many reports in from readers having less than stellar experiences getting their 3G iPhones.hardly unexpected considering the pent-up demand. A few readers have written in to say that AT&T has given them iPhones to activate at home. Others at AT&T say that they ordered their iPhone but won't recieve it for "another few days as stocks become available."
We haven't had any reports from Apple Store customers who are running out (oops - yes we have - this one only has a few hundred left) but the activation is taking much longer than anticipated.

Yellow Tinted 3G iPhones causing concern amonst new buyers
Over at MacRumors forums, people are complaining about a yellow tint that covers the screen. Anyone else having this issue? How are you doing in the iPhone 3G screen lottery? Did someone pee on your screen?

Microsoft plant angeblich neue Preissenkung für Xbox 360

Kurz nach Verfügbarkeit der neuen Version 2.0 des iPhone-Betriebssystems scheint es bereits einen Weg zu geben, wie man freien Zugang auf das iPhone-Dateissystem erhält. App Store: interessante Beobachtungen
Der App Store (Direktlink) ist seit gestern erreichbar. Bislang kann man sich dort im übertragenen Sinne aber nur die Nase an der virtuellen Glasscheibe platt drücken und sich in froher Erwartung an den in der Auslage des App Stores feilgebotenen Waren erfreuen, denn das neue iPhone- und iPod-touch-Betriebssystem ist noch nicht auf offiziellem Wege zu haben. Und ohne das Software-Update lässt sich zwar bereits Software kaufen, aber leider noch nicht verwenden (es sei denn, man ist ein stolzer Besitzer des neuen iPhone 3G). Wir haben uns trotzdem ausgiebig im App Store umgeschaut. Hier einige unserer Beobachtungen:

Aufatmen auf den Führungsetagen in Cupertino: Nachdem der Aktienoptionsskandal seit nunmehr zwei Jahren wie eine dunkle Wolke über Apple schwebte, bringt die Entscheidung der US-amerikanischen Staatsanwaltschaft die ersehnte Erleichterung. Die "iPod-Steuer" wäre für Apple sicher auch eine nette Werbung gewesen, aber die so in der Presse bezeichnete Abgabe auf tragbare Medienwiedergabegeräte und Aufzeichnungsgeräte mit Festplatte ist gescheitert. Damit gibt die japanische Regierung den Druck von Elektronikhändlern und -herstellern nach, die sich gegen die 1 bis 3 Prozent hohe Abgabe gewehrt hatten. Die Abgabe sollte Plattenfirmen, Songschreibern und Interpreten zu Gute kommen.

Eine neue Generation von Festplatten ist aus dem Hause Seagate zu erwarten. Der Spezialist für Datenspeicher kündigte soeben drei neue Modelle mit hoher Kapazität und Leistung an. Das Modell Barracuda 7200.11 ist mit satten 1,5 Terabyte ausgestattet und damit wohl die Festplatte, mit dem aktuell größten Speicherplatz. Das Notebook-Modell Momentus verfügt über 500 Gigabyte.

René war heute Morgen beim Swisscom Shop am Flughafen Zürich (Bild): «Ich war Nummer 34 und bekam als einer der letzten noch ein 8-GB-iPhone, sie hatten total ein (!) schwarzes 16-GB-iPhone, ca. zwölf weisse und 40 8-GB-Modelle.
Als Nummer 34 konnte ich ca. um 8:20 Uhr mein iPhone 3G in Empfang nehmen - die Wartenummer 10 wurde im Laden für 100.- verkauft (Miniauktion unter den wartenden ;-) »

Auf manchen Systemen sind die Funktionstasten eher dafür bekannt, dass sie keine Funktion haben. Andere Systeme kombinieren sie hingegen mit allen möglichen Umschalttasten. Mac OS X liegt irgendwo dazwischen, die Tasten fungieren beispielsweise zum Aufrufen oder Regeln der Displayhelligkeit, der Lautstärke, Exposé und Dashboard. Eigentlich hat Apple die MagSafe-Technologie erfunden und sich patentieren lassen, doch inzwischen können auch Nutzer anderer Elektronikgeräte sich über die stolperfreien Kabel freuen. MobileMe läuft
Wie uns ein Leser mitteilt, scheint Apple das Web-Interface von MobileMe unterdessen in Betrieb genommen zu haben. Eigentlich sollte MobileMe bereits seit mehr als 24 Stunden laufen, doch es kam offenbar zu Verzögerungen. Gestern ließ sich Apples neuer Dienst MobileMe bereits kurze Zeit über die neue Domain me.com erreichen, dann gelang der Zugriff jedoch nicht mehr und Apple leitete wieder auf die Informationsseite unter apple.com weiter. Als der App Store gestern im iTunes Store endlich zu erreichen war, gingen viele auf Shopping-Tour. SuperMonkeyBall wurde mit über 6000 verkauften Versionen binnen 12 Stunden zum Top-Seller der neuen iPhone- und iPod-Touch-Anwendungen. Doch so richtig Freude bereitet das Spiel derzeit seinen Käufern nicht, denn ohne die neue iPhone-Software funktioniert die Anwendung auf dem Mobilgerät nicht. Seagate Unveiled new HDs and Relaunches the Race for the Biggest 3.5
Over the last few months, all traditional HD manufacturers decided to have a break in their race for the 3.5" HD with the largest storage space, and all current offers were topping at 1 TB while they all have the tools to go beyond. One can think that due to the low demand for such large capacity HD, they could then reduce production cost and prepare the next wave of new products.
Seagate just announced the future availability of a 3.5" HD featuring 1.5 TB of storage space. The Barracuda 7200.11 will be based on 4 disks of 375 GB each, allowing data transfer speed of 120 MB/s in reading/writing mode. This announcement came 24 hours after Hitachi unveiling its 1 TB based on 3 disks of 375 GB each to reduce power consumption. Was It the Case of the Future MacBook Pro ?
Couple of days ago, the Chinese website Apple.pro released a photo supposed to be a prototype of the case for the future MacBook Pro.
Apple Insider claims to have obtained confirmation and so called additional details from its sources.
The photo would not be showing the battery, and its dedicated space would be hidden by the top part of the case. So the MacBook Pro would then adapt a similar design already used in the MacBook allowing to easily access the HD to change it after having removed the battery. Samsung Finally Launches Mass Production of its SSD
So far, most news about SSDs were composed of press releases about future products with non defined date for availability. As the market was just starting most players did not want to launch mass production, and most of them were just producing on-demand to avoid to generate stock of products which will never be able to sell as almost outdated when coming out from the fabrication line.
Confident in the success of SSDs, Samsung announced to have launched the mass production of its 2.5" SSDs based on SATA interface with capacity ranging from 64 to 128 GB. Those solid state HDs will be based on MLC chips allowing data transfer speed of 70 MB/s and 90 MB/S in writing and reading mode respectively, a performance level already higher than most traditional notebook HDs.
Prices were not unveiled, but should be similar to the current offer from OCZ, so 500 USD for the 128 GB model. Samsung plans to launch a new SSD model by the end of the year which will feature 256 GB of storage space. Right

Probleme mit MobileMe: Geht, geht nicht, geht
Irgendwas lief schief gestern bei Apple. Nachdem der neue Dienst MobileMe zunächst erreichbar war, konnte später nur noch sporadisch darauf zugegriffen werden. Inzwischen hängt Apple fast zwei Tage hinter dem Zeitplan, MobileMe aber läuft immer noch nicht. Apple musste nun zugeben, dass der Übergang von .Mac zu MobileMe "mehr Zeit als erwartet benötigt".

Alles wartet auf die Softwareversion 2.0 für iPod touch und das iPhone und bislang weiß niemand, wann Apple die Downloads offiziell bereit stellen wird. Wir vermuten, dass das Update aufgrund der extremen Verzögerungen beim Start von Apples neuem Onlineservice MobileMe zurück gestellt wurde - viele Dienste und Menüs im neuen Betriebssystem verweisen auf den neuen Namen von .Mac. Gut möglich, dass Apple hier potenziellen Problemen und allgemeiner Verwirrung vorbeugen will.

Swisscom Shop Chur: 16GB ausverkauft, 8GB auch bald weg
Ungefähr 90 Leute standen um 6.30 Uhr vor dem Swisscom Shop an der Gäuggelistrasse in Chur an. Das 16GB iPhone war relativ schnell ausverkauft. Um 8.00 Uhr waren noch ca. 30 Leute am Eingang. Es wurde gesagt, dass es für diese noch genug 8GB iPhones haben sollte.

Bericht aus Übersee: Schlangenstehen in Chicago

Kodak stellt Kamerasensor mit 50 Megapixeln vor

Warten in Deutschland, Party in Brüssel
Während in Europa die ersten neuen iPhones über den Tresen gehen, warten wir weiter auf das Erscheinen der iPhone-Software 2.0 in iTunes und auch Apples neuer Onlineservice MobileMe läuft entgegen allen Erwartungen auch 20 Stunden nach der planmäßigen Freischaltung noch nicht rund. In Europa werden bereits die ersten iPhones der neuen Generation verkauft. Hier in Deutschland müssen sich die Käufer zwar noch etwas gedulden, unsere belgischen Nachbarn dagegen können bereits seit Mitternacht zwischen schwarzer und weißer Gehäuserückseite wählen. App Store opens, iTunes 7.7 ships
Apple this morning introduced iTunes 7.7.
Installing the application offers users a route to the App Store - you can browse and download applications now, but you'll need to wait until iPhone Software 2.0 ships to run them on your iPhone.
The App Store isn't automatically showing as an option when you log into the iTunes Store, though it has been showing up occassionally this morning in the main view as a menu navigation option. If it doesn't, it is very easy to get there - open up the new 'Applications' folder you'll see in your personal iTunes navigation area to the left, once in Applications select "Get more applications" using the button at the lower right. And you'll be in the App Store.

9 to 5 Mac's spies are all over the iPhone launch. Here's our latest image, it shows the first stocks of the iPhone 3G being delivered to The Carphone Warehouse.

RIM 'struggling' with Thunder touch controls
Apple may have a huge big massive hit on its hands in the form of the iPhone - but Research In Motion's fight back plan may be falling apart, an analyst said this morning.
Nomura analyst Richard Windsor has warned clients that Research In Motion is struggling to develop the touch interface for use within its forthcoming 'iPhone killer', the BlackBerry Thunder. The analyst says the implementation even lags behind Nokia (who we think themselves are trailing Apple on touch controls).
"Those who have handled prototypes complain of poor typing, unresponsive keys, bugs in the user interface cause by touch as well as accelerometer issues," Windsor said, as reported by MarketWatch.

Apple TV update, corporate iPhone tool released, MobileMe
Apple has introduced its MobileMe service, and also offered an update for the Apple TV to enable iPhone remote controls and Mobile Me support, and for business users, the company has also this morning introduced the iPhone Configuration Utility for Mac and Windows.
The 2.29MB configuration utility lets you set up configuration profiles and install provisioning profiles as well as applications, and lets you get information about iPhones, including their console logs.

The world's first iPhone 3G purchaser as device on sale in NZ
You are staring at iPhone Jonny - he’s the first person in the world to buy an iPhone (we think), and was photographed queuing outside his local Vodafone store yesterday - thanks EnGadget (maybe you'll link back to us one day, hey?) - waiting at the head of the queue to pick up his iPhone.
Now he has. Yes, you heard us right - the iPhone 3G went on sale today, but in fact it is tomorrow it goes on sale - except in New Zealand, where it’s tomorrow already! Sometimes time zones are kind of exciting.

Italian consumer champs file iPhone anti-trust complaint
An irritated Italian consumer rights group has filed an anti-trust complaint with local regulators against the restriction of sales of the iPhone in Italy.
They are complaining because the device is only available through Vodafone and Telecom Italia.
Italy's anti-trust agency has begun gathering information on iPhone distribution, but hasn't yet begun a full anti-trust investigation, following reception of the complaint from the Movimento Difesa del Cittadino (MDC).
Both Italian carriers offer the same prices on an unlocked version of the iPhone - €499 for the 8GB model and €599 for the 16GB.

In case you were wondering, we gave it a shot. Updated the iPhone to 2.0, ran Ziphone, and it crashed. Then we downgraded to 1.4, Crash again.holding pattern. Zibri how long are we going to have to wait?

iPhone bringing iTunes store to many more countries
As the iPhone 3G circles the globe over the next 24 hours, more and more stores will begin opening up. Distorted Loop points out that Apple is leaving a trail of stores all over the world. Eventually there will be over 70. And they will have iPhone and iPod Apps stores. But will these iTunes stores carry any more products? Some international movies?
With that big of a footprint, reaching that many people (India=1 billion sets of eyes and ears), will some movie and record studios come beckoning? They'd be fools not to!

Ein erster Blick auf iPhone OS 2.0
Bahnbrechend neue Erkenntnisse gibt es keine, aber die im iPhone-Ticker veröffentlichten Screenshots vom deutschen iPhone OS 2.0 geben allen, die auf das morgige Update warten schon einen kleinen Vorgeschmack.
Interessant scheint uns ein Detail bei den Location Services (diese heißen auf Deutsch Ortungsdienste). Das iPhone fragt ab Software 2.0 ja bei Karten, Fotos und weiteren Apps wie zum Beispiel Twitterific, ob es die aktuellen Positionsdaten verwenden darf. Um diese Ortsdaten in Bilder oder eine Anwendung einzubetten, ist kein iPhone 3G nötig. Bei nicht vorhandenem GPS verwendet das iPhone die über die Mobilfunkmasten bzw. Wi-Fi-Netzwerke gewonnenen Lokalisierungsinfos.

Anaylst says Motorola "would be lucky" to get $500 million
