News: T-Mobile to carry iPhone 3G in Eastern Europe

A random problem with the Quicktime 7.5 update
Even though a number of us have had no problem installing the QuickTime 7.5 update, some (see here and here) are confronted with serious problems.
Either their machine starts again in an endless loop, or it starts up, but refuses to launch Finder however all the other software functions correctly.
It is still too early to know the common link between those who have this problem.

The new DVD engravers from Pioneer
Source : CDR InfoPioneer has announced its sixteenth generation of DVD engravers.
The DVR-116D (PATA) and DVR-216D (SATA) are able to engrave DVD +-R at 20x, the double-layer at 12x and the DVD-RAM at 5x.
We were, for a long time, unconditional fans Pioneer engravers, however we have since become disenchanted. The last models which we have tested, had a quoted speed of 18x, however they were slower than other products announced to engrave at 16x.
Let us hope that the company has since made an effort.

The winners of this year's Apple Design Awards were announced last night at WWDC, including new applications for iPhone which aren't yet available to the public, pending the launch of the App Store.
The awards, which, "recognize technical excellence, innovation, and outstanding achievement in software development," were given to a range of applications from developers both small and large. Glass keyboard concept opts for cameras instead of keys

While we can't say it's our notion of an ideal keyboard, we've still got to admire designer Kong Fanwen's ability to throw any sense of practicality to the wind and ditch the whole idea of keys with his new "No-key Keyboard" concept. In the place of that tried and true typing mechanism, this keyboard would instead make use of a camera and the "latest motion capture technology" to watch your fingers' movement and capture all the right keystrokes (ideally). On the upside, that'd apparently make the keyboard fully waterproof, and it'd apparently come with some snazzy lighting options to help you find those non-existent keys in the dark.

AMD und Intel kooperieren bei Physikbeschleunigung
AMD und Havok haben eine enge Zusammenarbeit bei der Entwicklung von Physik-Engines für Computerspiele angekündigt. BITKOM fordert Abschaffung der GEZ-Gebühr
Der Bundesverband Informationswirtschaft Telekommunikation und neue Medien (BITKOM) hat den Ausbau gebührenfinanzierter Internet-Angebote von ARD und ZDF abgelehnt. BITKOM-Präsident Prof. Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer appellierte an die Ministerpräsidenten der Länder, den aktuellen Entwurf zur Neuregelung des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunks nicht abzusegnen. Intel shows off robotic hand with "Pre Touch" object conformation

Intel researchers have achieved something similar with a robotic hand that uses electrolocation to create a robotic hand conform to the shape of an object before interacting with it. Shown at Research@Intel Day, the hand uses fish-like electrolocation to bounce electric fields off of objects and then conform the hand to that shape in real time. Google startet "Städte in 3D" auch in Deutschland
Google hat sein Programm "Städte in 3D" nun auch in Deutschland gestartet, das Kommunen die Erstellung eines 3D-Modells ihrer Stadt für Google Earth erleichtern soll. Dazu stellt Google den Gemeinden kostenlos lokale Geodaten und Tools wie das 3D-Modellierprogramm Sketchup zur Verfügung, mit dem sich beispielsweise 3D-Modelle von Gebäuden erstellen lassen.

Debunk: Schiller's front facing iPhone 3G camera

So there's a sensational rumor going around that Phil Schiller unwittingly presented MobileMe at WWDC using an iPhone 3G with a front facing video camera. The very same camera fanboys wished for but Apple choose not to include in the final specs. The idea that Schiller would unknowingly demonstrate such a device is, to put it mildly, absurd. The fact that the evidence is reviewable -- and in HD -- on Apple's website makes it even more so. If you care to look for yourself, the mysterious grease spot appears at 1:18:28 during the keynote. EFI-X: future Eldorado for Hackintosh?
For some unknown reason, Apple did not react following the initiative of Psystar to sell PC hardware with Mac OS X pre-installed. So other companies have decided to follow, and it might lead to a "wave" similar to the "Mac clones" one as we experienced it more than a decade ago.
A new offer released by http://www.efi-x.com/ will be based on an USB key which will include all software required to install Mac OS X from an original DVD on any PC without requiring any special tricks. If this is not really stated, the system will probably not be free, and should be available on June 23rd.
Apple might have to react quickly before loosing seeing the park of Hackintosh users growing exponentially.

Operating a vehicle during a diabetic blood sugar crash can be a dangerous proposition for both driver and others on the road. That's why Medtronic Diabetes developed the M-POWERED concept car that allows a person to constantly monitor glucose levels via both audio and visual cues. The Lincoln sedan was unveiled at this year's American Diabetes Association annual meeting in San Francisco. No word on what happens during a glucose drop, but we imagine some sort of alarm and then, perhaps, shutdown occurs.

Source : Apple InsiderSo some wondered what use the repurchase of PA Semi was to Apple, Steve Jobs has given the answer in an interview.
Apple will use its knowledge to develop its own SoC (System One Chip) where the maximum of functions for a given device is integrated onto a single chip, and then use them in its iPhone and iPod.
If the idea appears absurd at first glance, it is not really:
- Semi Pa has deep knowledge of this field recognized primarily by the army.
- While developing its own chips, Apple will be able to set up new functions that will be difficult to copy by competition.
- It will be easier to them to set up high level protections.
- They will have a more advanced control over their devices in the future from conception onwards according to their design needs and software functions.

Up to now, Disney has concentrated on iTunes Store to offer its products online. This has gone relatively well; they succeeded in selling 4 million films in two years.
The group, however, prepares to have a little action on the side by proposing the direct online release of certain cartoons, for free, or rather in exchange of some advertising at the beginning of film.
Of course, nothing is simple with Disney. During summer they will propose each week one their full-length feature films on television; it will be possible to watch it online during the week which follows but only during this period.
It should not be forgotten that the speciality of Disney is to try to resell its films the maximum of number of time. Blu-ray is yet another excuse for them to turn out another of their remastered versions.

Google Earth: Mehr deutsche Städte in 3D
Seit Version 4.2 unterstützt Google Earth auch die Darstellung von Texturen auf 3D-Modellen. Allerdings sind die entsprechenden 3D-Vorlagen für deutsche Städte noch mit der Lupe zu suchen. Um dies zu ändern, möchte Google europäischen Ländern nun selbst unter die Arme greifen, so berichtet Golem. Orange iPhone 3G: 99 or 199
If you go and visit the online Orange store, you will see that Orange seems to have already updated the prices and, included the worldwide cut announced by Apple. You then should have the choice between an 8 GB iPhone 3G for 99 or 199 for the high-end model featuring 16 GB of storage space.
If those prices are confirmed in the coming days, then it will not be cheaper to get a US model anymore, killing the market of unlocking definitely. One will have to wait for the subscription tariff offers to draw final conclusion.

Während der WWDC-Eröffnungsrede wurde mehr als nur einmal erwähnt, dass die dort gezeigte Software "bald" oder "zum Start des AppStore" erhältlich sei. US iPhone 3G Only Designed for AT&T?

Let's have a look at a details not mentioned yet. When looking at the specification for the US iPhone 3G (here), on can read "UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)".
If one look further at the specification of the 3G network in USA, one will immediately notice that only AT&T 3G network will be compatible with the iPhone 3G. According to technical specification of the US competitors, their 3G network will simply not work, making any unlocking of an AT&T iPhone 3G for being used with another carrier almost useless.
Indeed T-Mobile is the second largest US carrier with its own 3G network but based on a different bandwidth (1700/2100Mhz) instead of AT&T (850/1900Mhz), as indicated in T-Mobile wiki (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_USA). So indirectly

Vinyl Records Are B(l)ack!?
If music majors are having troubles in making their business plans evolve from CD media to online store, TGDaily reports that vinyl records are making a comeback. Following a mistake from one of its employee, Fred Meyer chain noticed that vinyl records were selling well, and now it is testing out vinyl sales in 60 stores in the northwest and Alaska and will be adding records to all of its stores in July.

Jährlich werden zur Entwicklerkonferenz von Apple nicht nur Workshops und Sessions angeboten, auch die "Event-Kultur" kommt nicht zu kurz. Erst gestern veröffentlichte Mozilla noch einmal ein weiteres Release Candidate seiner neuen Version 3.0 von Firefox. Wie eine unglaubliche Geschichte hörte sich gestern an, was 9to5mac aus gut unterrichteten Kreisen bei O2 über das neue iPhone erfahren haben will: Die SIM-Karte soll sich nicht austauschen lassen und der Datenaustausch via Bluetooth wird möglich sein. Während sich ersteres als Falschmeldung entpuppte, scheint die Bluetooth-Info (vielleicht) zu stimmen. Zudem scheint die eingebaute iPhone-Kamera Geotagging zu unterstützen.

Eine der großen Neuerungen des neuen iPhone 3G ist dessen GPS-Unterstützung: Durch Militärsatelliten gestützt den Weg zum nächsten Starbucks zu finden, wäre aber auch wirklich eine tolle Sache. Google Earth will deutsche Städte in 3D
In den USA sind viele Städte schon mit 3D-Modellen in Google Earth vertreten. In Deutschland sieht es hingegen eher mau aus. Zwar sind in Hamburg und Berlin, München und Wiesbaden in dieser Richtung große Anstrengungen unternommen worden, dreidimensionale Repräsentanzen zu eröffnen, doch die Mehrzahl der Städte sind in Google Earth noch flach wie eine Flunder. App Store: Viele Programme umsonst
20 der 5200 Teilnehmer der Apple-Entwicklerkonferenz WWDC hat sich ein US-Analyst herausgegriffen, um eine Mini-Umfrage bezügliche des Angebots im kommenden App Store für den iPod touch und das iPhone zu machen. In wie weit die Ergebnisse nun tatsächlich repräsentativ sind, sei mal dahin gestellt - käme es tatsächlich so, dann wären gut 70% aller angebotenen Programme kostenlos. Der Preis der restlichen Programme soll laut der Umfrage im Schnitt unter drei Dollar liegen. (AppleInsider)
Für die Spiele der großen Firmen wird man allerdings etwas mehr hinlegen müssen. Im Rahmen der Eröffnungsrede zur Konferenz stellte SEGA die iPhone/iPod touch-Variante von Super Monkey Ball vor, im Rahmen der Präsentation wurde ein angepeilter Verkaufspreis von 9,99 Dollar genannt, was bei entsprechendem Umfang des Spiels aber durchaus noch vertretbar wäre.

Source : ToshibaToshiba has just announced its new generation of 1,8" disks spinning at 5400 rpm. These products equipped with 8 MB of cache will be offered at the sizes of 80 and 160 GB. The 80 GB model will have only one platter and a thickness of 5 mm while the 160 GB is equipped with two platters and thus will be 8 mm, too thick for MacBook Air.
It should be noted that these disks have a SATA interface, which does not help with the evolution of the Apple ultra portable.

Im Web ist ein Video aufgetaucht, dass angeblich ein iPhone mit dem neusten iPhone-2.0-Build zeigt. In diesem Video werden zwei neue Video-Funktionen gezeigt.
