Sony continues its series of home theater updates today with a new HTIB, the HST-S100. Like some previous Sony packages, the HST-S100 doesn't feature a central receiver, instead integrating the 450W amplifier, 3 HDMI ports and Sony Digital Media Port right into the back of the sub. Furthering the stealth factor, the five speakers themselves are no bigger than strawberries -- which has us wondering about mid-range performance, but we'll withhold judgement until we actually hear 'em. YouTube content comes to Sony's Bravia Internet Video Link

Cirrus Logic shares took a hike North today on strength of market rumours that company’s audio codec chips will be deployed in future Apple iPods, including the iPod touch.
The scene it seems means, “Apple could become a meaningful revenue contributor to Cirrus starting in the second quarter of fiscal 2009,” well, that’s what Roth Capital Partners analyst, Jay Srivatska said.

Mitsubishi (and the world) sue Vizio over MPEG-2 patents

We just got our hands on Nokia's sexy new N78, which it's bringing to us previously Nokia-starved North Americans in full-fledged, unlocked 3.5G. The phone boasts Nokia's new maps 2.0 app, along with photo geotagging, and of course all those N-series trimmings like WiFi and dual cameras. There's no N-Gage support yet, but a firmware update is forthcoming. Unfortunately for us, we had trouble getting geotagging or even online photo uploads in general to work at all -- we didn't stoop so low as to look at the manual, but Nokia certainly has some interface kinks to work out here. Zukünftige iPhones mit kleineren Displays?
Die Kollegen von der iLounge haben Bilder und Informationen zu zwei Touch Screen-Modulen erhalten, die laut dem taiwanesischen Hersteller in zukünftigen iPhone-Modellen verbaut werden sollen. Interessant daran ist, dass beide Module mit 2,8" und 3,2" kleiner sind, als der aktuelle 3,5"-Bildschirm. Somit stellt sich die spannende Frage, ob Apple tatsächlich zwei kleinere iPhones und damit auch den Aufwand, das Benutzerinterface entsprechend abzustimmen, auf sich nimmt. Vor allem stellt sich die Frage, wie komfortabel sich auf einer deutlich verkleinerten Bildschirmtastatur tippen ließe.
Interessant ist daher auch die Überlegung, ob die Displays - falls sie überhaupt für Apple produziert werden - gar nicht für das iPhone bestimmt sind. Der iPod nano beispielsweise ließe sich durch ein 2,8" Touch Screen-Display deutlich aufwerten, bliebe aber weiterhin recht kompakt. Apple

Western Digital Announced 334 GB Storage Space per plate
After having packed 320 GB of storage space per plate last January, Western Digital announced to have further increased the capacity per plate to 334 GB. This achievement will be only used for the 1 TB Caviar GP HD available in Asia. Other specifications of the HD (7200 rpm, 16 MB cache and SATA format) remain identical to the model available worldwide but there are based on four plates of 250 GB each. Western Digital did not provide any additional information regarding the price of such high-density plate-based HD, nor its availability for non-Asian markets. The main goal of increasing storage density is to reduce the number of plates and as a consequence the reduce power consumption and increase reliability.

It looks like HP is milking its future plans for its Voodoo division for all their worth, with it now following up its tantalizing hints from a few days ago with a not-so-subtle revision of the VoodooPC website. Verizon Alltel merger would form largest carrier in the US (by far)

Just a quick bit of math and you can see that today's news doesn't bode well for AT&T, which has been enjoying its position at the top of the heap in major US cellphone carriers for quite some time now. While AT&T has a solid 71m subscribers under their belt, number two Verizon has 67m and number five Alltel has 13m -- which means this merger could potentially put 80m customers under the same roof. Intel slapped with $25 million antitrust fine in Korea

Apple's move to field more environmentally-friendly LED displays seems set to yield a much larger field of so-equipped Macs, with news this morning that AU Optronics has announced a full range of 16:9 LCD panels for displays.
We know that AU Optronics is one of two display manufacturers contracted to produce screens for the new MacBook models,w hich are expected to ship in the third quarter of 2008.
The new displays even include a 21.5-inch 1080p full HD resolution panel - large enough for Apple to potentially introduce the technology into iMacs and a small Apple display,
The new products are set for demonstration at Display Taiwan 2008 next week, and the display range includes screens which could soon appear in MacBooks and MacBook pros - even the 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Yet another leak re 10.6
Source : Arstechnica It is now the turn of Arstechnica to announce that they have obtained information on Mac OS X 10.6. Its code name will be be Snow Leopard and its release is scheduled for January 2009.
As its name is close to the current version we can guess that it will not introduce any major changes compared to the current version.
This new variation would be rather be directed towards an increase in the performances and stability, the goal being to easily be able to run it on other devices than our current computers. (Already the system that runs the iPhone is a derivative of Leopard).
Apple will take advantage of this version to remove the last traces of Carbon and to keep only Cocoa.

O2 to deep discount 3G iPhone
Yet more news this morning on the upcoming 3G iPhone, which Apple's exclusive UK network O2 plans to sell at a discount price, with special upgrade deals for existing customers and more. It's the latest hot iPhone rumour to speculate upon Apple's launch plans for the device, with Macworld UK claiming the product will cost £100 for a new customer agreeing an 18-month contract.
O2 is also predicted to be preparing to sell the iPhone in the UK to pay-as-you-go customers, who will have to pay £269 to get hold of the device. For well-heeled users, the company will offer a free iPhone to customers choosing the most expensive tariff. Even better, existing iPhone users will be offered a free upgrade to the new model.

iPod-Integration für das Fahrrad
Hersteller Canondale hat einige Design-Studien in Auftrag gegeben, die sich unter anderem mit einer möglichen iPod-Integration bei Fahrrädern beschäftigen. Allerdings scheinen die Studien schon etwas älter zu sein, da noch ein iPod der fünften Generation abgebildet ist. Auch sollte natürlich dringend von der Verwendung von Kopfhörern auf dem Fahrrad im Straßenverkehr abgesehen werden. RIM dominates, Apple gains, Palm falls in smartphone markets
Research In Motion's BlackBerry remains the darling in corporate America, but recent price cuts and the imminent arrival of enterprise-class support in the iPhone means Apple's a growing contender for corporate purchases.
A May ChangeWave survey of 2,049 respondents reveals a still soft corporate technology spending environment in which Research In Motion continues to dominate the smart phone market. The survey was conducted among respondents with purchasing responsibility at their firms.
BlackBerry grew its lead, climbing three points to secure 76 per cent of the market, Palm its already vast lead (76%; up 3-pts) in the corporate smart phone market. Second-place Palm lost one point to take 17 per cent, "and shows no signs of halting its long-term decline," the researchers said.

VoIP für das iPhone mit Sipgate
Sipgate hat eine kostenlose Software veröffentlich, um VoIP-Telefonate mit dem iPhone zu betreiben. Das Programm soll die Nutzung von allen VoIP-Diensten verwenden, die den SIP-Standard verwenden. iPhone to cost under €100 in Spain, has video, GPS
Remember the Times report which claimed the 3G iPhone will cost £100 in the UK, as it's to be subsidised? Now comes a new report which adds weight to that earlier speculation.
Telefonica SA's Movistar brand will be the sole distributor of the iPhone in Spain, the company revealed last night. Local Spanish press reports claim the new device will be sold for under €100 to customers prepared to sign a 24-36-month contract with the company.
The report - straight outta Madrid and carried by Thomson Financial - also informs: "The Spanish telecom group will sell the third generation of the iPhone, which has a video camera and GPS."

Britische Polizei verhaftet zum ersten Mal Filesharer
Die Polizei von Cleveland hat in Großbritannien erstmals Nutzer von Filesharing-Plattformen verhaftet. Den insgesamt sechs Personen wird vorgeworfen, über einen Server in Amsterdam illegal Musik oft noch vor ihrer Veröffentlichung getauscht zu haben. Man lernt nie aus: Schneller Programmwechsel
Will man zwischen den gerade aktiven Programmen schnell hin- und herwechseln reicht eigentlich die Benutzung der Tastenkombination "Befehl (bzw. CMD oder Apfel) + Tab", um die Liste aller geöffneten Anwendungen zu erhalten. Ist dieser aber sehr lang, muss erst mühsam mit dieser Tastenkombination bei immer wieder gedrückter Tabulator- oder Pfeiltaste darin herum navigiert werden. Dabei geht das auch wesentlich schneller: Nämlich mit der Maus bzw. deren Scrollrad oder dem Trackpad eines Apple-Notebooks.

Two new Blu-ray engravers from LG
Source : CDR InfoLG announced two new Blu-ray engravers intended for the desktop machines that succeed the current model, the GGW-H20L.
Since the format HD-DVD has bitten the dust, the new GBC-H20L and GBW-H20L no longer can read this format. The two models are able to engrave the Blu-ray single layer media in 6x, the DVD at 16x and CD at 40x. They are different at the level of engraving the BD-R double-layer, the GBC-H20L does not have this capacity. In exchange of this function, that is not entirely useful given the impossibility of finding virgin double-layer media, it is proposed at a price of $199,95$ compared to $279,95 for the equivalent model with double-layer engraving.
LG thus continues on its way by proposing powerful models with very reasonable tariffs.

It looks like relative upstart Seegrid is doing its part to help robots snag a few more jobs normally reserved from us humans, with it now showing off its autonomous Industrial Mobile Robot system (or IMR), which promises to let self-navigating material handling vehicles work in environments that were previously not economically or technically feasible for them to serve. At the heart of the system is a beefed up "tugger" ordinarily used for pushing shopping carts around, which has been outfitted with four pairs of cheap CMOS cameras that are connected via plain old USB to the computer under the hood.
