TDK announces 64GB 1.8-inch HS1 micro SATA drives, we scream in glee

Things are looking up in the SSD race: TDK has just announced what they are calling the smallest Micro SATA SSD drives. The HS1 series will measure just 1.8 inches with 16, 32, and 64GB capacities and will use single-level cell NAND flash memory. Read / write speeds are spinner-like 100MBps and 50MBps respectively and are expected to be energy efficient at 20mA. Security wise, we're looking at 128-bit AES encryption with 7-bit error correction. They won't come cheap, though: prices are expected to run $900, $1,500, and $2,000 for the three capacities.

Palm claims larger share of smartphone market, has Centro to thank

What's this? Some joyous news on the Palm front? No need to Windex your spectacles -- the aforementioned handset maker has indeed managed to up its share of the smartphone market from 7.9% in the fourth quarter to 13.4% today, largely thanks to the popularity of its Centro. It wasn't long ago that IBM promised to unleash its racetrack MRAM (magnetoresistive RAM) on a power and speed-hungry computing public, but now Toshiba says its 1GB MRAM chips are "almost ready". Analyst says Nintendo deliberately redirecting Wii Fit to Europe

So the backstory goes something like this: Elektroniktidningen were looking forward to a meeting with HTC, but the meeting was delayed due to talks of some sort of merger with Sony Ericsson. US-Kleinstadt wehrt sich gegen Google
Die kleine Stadt North Oaks im US-Bundesstaat Minnesota hat sich erfolgreich gegen Aufnahmen gewehrt, die im Rahmen von Googles Fotokartendienst Street View gemacht und ins Internet gestellt worden waren. Die Straßen von Red Oaks seien in Privatbesitz, argumentierte dessen Stadtrat. Entsprechende Schilder mit der Aufschrift "Durchfahrt verboten" würden Besucher bereits bei der Einreise in das Stadtgebiet über diese Tatsache aufklären. Das Befahrungsverbot gelte auch für die mit Kameras bestückten Autos, die für Google Aufnahmen vieler US-Städte machten, stellte der Stadtrat in einem Brief an den Suchmaschinenbetreiber klar. Google musste daraufhin die betreffenden Aufnahmen aus seiner Bilderdatenbank entfernen.

No Apple's Booth at the Apple Expo 2008
We have just learned that Apple will not be present at the Apple Expo 2008, despite promise given at the show last year. If we are still collecting details about this news, we can already provide the following information.
It has been some time already that Steve jobs made it clear that it was preferable to open physical Apple Store than sponsoring such show, as cost-on-return are different, as a Show is more targeting mid to long-term goals. We started having doubts about 3 months ago, when the organization of the event for apples side moved from the usual American members to the Apple Europe Pr representative, already fully overloaded with tasks and not really having the time nor the experience of such event. Then, the lack of communication about the show among third-parties was also another hint. They have now been officially informed that Apple will not have a booth at the Apple Expo 2008. First French Apple Store in Le Louvre C
As we already announced it 9 month ago, the first Apple Store will be installed in the shopping center known as "Le Carrousel" in Le Louvre. For its first French physical Store, Apple had to find a prestigious location, and as there were no real opportunities on the Champs-Elysées, Le Carrousel appears to be a best choice, especially when considering the size of the future Store: 715 squared meters! This is definitely more that what we were expecting, and the first French Apple Store will be a real flagship for Apple. Denon S-52 Kompaktsystem auch in Weiß
Bereits im letzten Jahr hat Denon das S-52, eine Kombination aus iPod-Dockingstation, CD-Player mit WMA/MP3-Wiedergabe, FM/AM- und Internetradio-Empfänger vorgestellt. Bisher war das kompakte All-in-One-System allerdings ausschließlich mit schwarzem Gehäuse erhältlich. Laut Denon auf Kundenwunsch soll das Gerät nun ab Ende Juni auch in Weiß und mit einem neuen, verbesserten User-Interface erhältlich sein. Der empfohlene Verkaufspreis liegt bei satten 649 Euro.
Besitzer aktueller S-52-Geräte (auch S-32) profitieren ebenfalls von der Aktualisierung, das kostenlose Update kann bei aktivierter Internetverbindung über die entsprechende Funktion im Gerät bezogen werden.

Hersteller von Solid State Drives (SSD) erwarten aufgrund der Einführung der Multilevel-Cell-Technologie (MLC) einen deutlichen Preisverfall für Flash-basierte Festplatten mit einer Kapazität von über 100 GByte. "Verglichen mit dem heutigen Preis eines 64-GByte-SSD wird man für die Hälfte Speicherkapazitäten von 128 GByte erhalten", sagt Patrick Wilkison, Marketing-Vizepräsident von SSD-Hersteller STEC. Online-Werbung wächst in Europa um 40 Prozent
Der Markt für Online-Werbung ist 2007 in Europa um 40 Prozent auf elf Milliarden Euro gewachsen und liegt damit vier Milliarden Euro über dem Vorjahresergebnis (7,2 Milliarden Euro). Das belegt ein Report des Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe (IAB Europe). It has been more than 3 years that Art Lebedev studio announced its Optimus keyboard project. After months of delays, the product is finally there, but its price 1200 USD makes it a luxurious device, and most users can simply not afford.

Microsoft Spotted a security flaw in Safari 3 for Windows
In a security alert bulletin, Microsoft claims that there is a blended threat from combined attack when using Apples Safari on the Windows platform.

In summary, one could format a dedicated web page to make Safari to download a file in the default "download" folder without the end user being able to notice it. In addition, one could even remotely recover those files. Mac OS X 10.5.3 Improves Performance Levels of GeForce 8800 GT
Barefeats has tested the performance level of the retailed GeForce 8800 GT (as well as the integrated GF 8800 GS in high-end iMac) before and after migrating to Mac OS X 10.5.3. Barefeats noticed a real improvement for the GF 8800 GT with Core Image and Motion 3-based rendering, and the high-end Mac Pro graphic card can no compete with the default Radeon 2600.
However, one should not get so much excited. If Apple definitely worked on the GF drivers to make them better in Mac OS X 10.5.3, users will not really be able to get the max out of their GF 8800 GT as in most case the performance only improved enough to become roughly equal to the one measured for the default Radeon HD 2600 XT.
This illustrates again how Apple is not taking much care of GPU drivers development, offering only the minimal amount of work required to get graphical rendering performance level of Apple Applications acceptable.

Due to the GPU, a PC costing $5300 performs as well as a supercomputer
Source : TGdailyNVidia is making loud and strong claims; soon graphic processors will surpass the main CPU and will be used for the main part of calculations relegating the others to the not very glorious role of distributors of tasks.
To illustrate this assertion, Belgian scientists have assembled a configuration almost available to the general public containing 4 NVidia video cards, each equipped with two GPU (of Geforce 9800 GX2), and functioning together in Quad SLI.
They succeeded with this configuration costing $5300 to perform better than a supercomputer costing 4,6 million dollars bought in 2005 and containing 512 processors.
For their tests they used software for tomography (medical imagery) and they succeeded in creating an image in 52,2 seconds with the PC that took 67,4 seconds with the large dedicated machine.

In Las Vegas eröffnet mal wieder ein neues Hotel und wenn das 2,9 Milliarden teure Fontainebleu in der Stadt der einarmigen Banditen die Pforte öffnet, freut sich auch Apple. Jeder der 3889 Räume soll mit einem iMac und der üblichen Mac-Software ausgestattet sein. Gäste können also Fotos bearbeiten und Videos schneiden, sowie ihre Reise innerhalb des Fontainebleu Resorts planen.
