Der Bau von 15 weiteren S- und U-Bahnlinien in Berlin kann losgehen, denn zumindest Besitzer eines iPhone oder iPod touch dürfte kein auch noch so kompliziertes öffentliches Verkehrssystem mehr schocken. Researchers boast of progress towards more efficient OLED lighting

FCC tentatively approves XM / Sirius merger

Nintendo loses another round in controller patent lawsuit

Xing meldet Rekordergebnis
Wie schon im ersten Quartal hat das Hamburger Unternehmen Xing, Betreiber des gleichnamigen Business-Netzwerkes, auch im zweiten Quartal einen Rekordumsatz erzielt. Java homebrew devkit for the PS3 emerges, nobody cares
Filed under: Gaming PSP hacker "FreePlay" has turned his gaze to the PS3, and come up with a method for the first PS3 homebrew outside of Linux and that little "hello world" proof of concept a few months back.. The minimal devkit doesn't seem built to take advantage of the PS3's wiles, however, and is instead working with the Java prowess built into the Blu-ray playback end of the PS3. Who knows how much power that'll lend to homebrew developers, but it's Java, so we're not expecting great things either way. Wake us when we can play PS2 games, would you?

Reportedly, scads of third-party developers revealed at E3 that the Big N's latest Wiimote accessory was just as much a surprise to them as it was to any of us. Wir müssen das Preis-Hick-Hack rund um die von Nullriver im AppStore vertriebene Radio-Applikation Tuner (AppStore-Link) hier einmal ansprechen. Denn das was wir in den letzten Tagen im AppStore quasi live mitverfolgen konnten, hat mit transparenter Preisgestaltung ungefähr so viel zu tun, wie frischer Spargel mit Kettenreiniger.
Tuner, ein Client zum Streamen diverser Online-Radio Stationen, ausgestattet mit einem integrierten Sender-Verzeichnis und der Möglichkeit eigene Streams per Hand einzutragen, wurde am 11.Juli erstmals im AppStore zum Kauf angeboten. Als Apple Snow Leopard vorstellte, wurde auch OpenCL erwähnt, eine Technologie, bei der Rechenaufgaben vom Grafikprozessor übernommen werden, die sonst eigentlich von der CPU berechnet würden. Legale Musikdownloads erreichen Rekordniveau
Nach Angaben von Media Control hat der Markt für legale Musikdownloads ein neues Rekordniveau erreicht. Im ersten Halbjahr 2008 wurden in Deutschland 22,3 Millionen Musikstücke per Download verkauft. Dies entspricht einer Zunahme von 32,7 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr. Der mit digitalen Musikformaten erzielte Umsatz stieg im gleichen Zeitraum um 37,6 Prozent auf 40,1 Millionen Euro. "Die Bedeutung legaler Musikdownloads wächst beständig", sagte Ulrike Altig, Geschäftsführerin von Media Control.

Word coming out of the inner circle says there's no illness around Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and that reports of his ill health have been exagerrated.
There's been numerous rumblings of concern at the Apple co-founders health in recent weeks. Questioned this week about the ill health rumours Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, said: "Steve loves Apple. He serves at the pleasure of Apple's board. He has no plans to leave Apple. Steve's health is a private matter."
Privately, it seems that there's no cancer affecting the visionary Apple leader. Der Weg für die Einführung eines elektronischen Personalausweises im Scheckkartenformat ist frei, die Bundesregierung hat heute dem Entwurf des Gesetzes über Personalausweise und den elektronischen Identitätsnachweis sowie zur Änderung weiterer Vorschriften zugestimmt. Apple leads in digital media, mobile computing - analysis
Despite economic challenges and investor jitters at Apple's proposed lower-than-anticipated profit margins, current weakness in the stock is a buying opportunity, said American Technology Research analyst, Shaw Wu.
"We continue to see Apple as the best play on digital media in the home and a large beneficiary of the shift to mobile computing," Wu wrote.
Wu also thinks the recession's bite will be felt first among value-conscious consumers, rather than the slightly higher income customers who form Apple's base. "In two of its three big franchises, Mac and iPhone, penetration is very low and starting in the higher-income demographics. Auch Take MS liefert jetzt DDR3-Speicher aus. Vorerst gehören zum Programm Module mit Kapazitäten von 1 und 2 GByte und 1066 oder 1333 MHz Taktung. Die JEDEC-Spezifikationen für DDR3 sehen eigentlich Taktfrequenzen bis zu 1600 MHz vor, Take MS will solche Module aber erst anbieten, wenn sie sich ohne Erhöhung der Spannung einsetzen lassen.

iPod nano kommt zukünftig angeblich mehrfarbig
Mit der gestrigen Quasi-Ankündigung neuer Produkte wurde auch das alljährliche Sommerratespiel um die nächsten iPod-Updates eingeleitet. Nahezu sicher ist, dass es im aktuellen Quartal aktualisierte oder vielleicht sogar komplett neue iPods geben wird. Fragt sich also nur wann und wie.
Das US-Blog 9to5mac lag bei der Einführung des aktuellen iPod nano mit vorab veröffentlichten Produktfotos zu 100 Prozent richtig und will auch jetzt schon wieder Informationen zum anstehenden iPod nano-Upgrade haben. Danach soll dieser künftig mit mehrfarbigem Gehäuse, doppeltem Speicherplatz und nicht näher definierten "zusätzlichen Funktionen" erhältlich sein.
Ob an dieser vagen Voraussage etwas dran ist bleibt abzuwarten, sicher ist nur, dass dieses Gerücht nicht das letzte rund um die kommenden iPods sein wird.

Yahoo meldet Gewinnrückgang im zweiten Quartal
Yahoo hat im zweiten Quartal einen geringeren Gewinn als im selben Zeitraum des Vorjahres ausgewiesen. Der Umsatz stieg um 8 Prozent auf 1,346 Milliarden Dollar, während der Gewinn um 19 Prozent auf 161 Millionen Dollar beziehungsweise auf 10 US-Cent pro Aktie fiel. A Price war with Blu-ray - finally
Until now, the price and the scarcity of the components, primarily of the blue-purple lasers, made the competition between the manufacturers of Blu-ray products somewhat timid.
However this segment is now taking off and many makers want to make a strong impression quickly.
Thus BenQ has just announced a significant fall, by 33%, price of its Blu-ray readers for desktop machines and now sell it for $120. They must market it under the psychological barrier of $100 during the second quarter.
This fall is the response of this manufacturer to the announcement by Pioneer last week.

Supertalent has made progress with the data flow of its SSD disks
Source : DailytechThe competition with SSD disks is currently taking place in two sectors, the price and the performances. In order to approach what its adversaries propose, Supertalent announced that its new SSD disks would see an increase with their writing speeds:
- 60 MB/s on models 15 and 30 GB
- 80 MB/s on models 60 and 120 GB.
- The disks containing Flash SLC will reach the 100 MB/s.
One is still certainly very far from the full potential of the SSD technology which in is still taking its first steps. In the future, one certainly will reach something which approaches the famous Moore's law with increase in capacity and data flow that will double regularly.

Even Sony will sell a cut price portable
Source : DigitimesEven though EEE PC initially made certain manufacturers of laptops smile, things have since changed.
Asus sells these laptops by the shovel load so that the majority manufacturers have also entered into this battle. It is now with the turn of those famous top-of-the-range manufacturers of expensive products to get interested in this segment, Sony in the lead. The group has approached Foxconn to order the components necessary to manufacture these mini laptops.
The other Japanese manufacturers, NEC, Fujitsu and Toshiba are also on the line. These new products will arrive in time for the festivals of end of the year.

Vista does not like SSD disks
Source : CNETEli Harari, owner of Sandisk, in a conference gave a progress report on the SSD disks and their still very weak penetration in the market.

Mobile.me, a new demon for Apple ?

A small email to keep you up-to-date with a BIG problem with me.com. Apparently many users (including me) cannot reach their emails any more (nor to send them). Some even saw their emails disappear from the email servers of me.com! (Several years of correspondence

A Macbook Touch in preparation?

The device would be equipped with a screen the size of the MacBook or a little smaller, and would take the essence of what one has seen with the iPhone; the tactile multipoint screen, an accelerometer, a GPS, together with a Superdrive. Tri-Solar LED Flashlight: because three panels are better than one

Nah, it's no Mag-Lite, but the Tri-Solar LED Flashlight should handle most minor lighting needs. The unit can operate with one LED on, three LEDs on or all three LEDs flashing (you know, in case you realize the car you just hopped in is now making a b-line for the Bates Motel). Because a single solar panel can only catch so much sunlight, this one has a trifecta of cells that fold out and generate juice for the bulbs. Interesting that this didn't get announced at E3, but Games for Windows Live is now free for all. Yep, totally free, cross-platform multiplayer with the 360 included -- which obviously raises the question of whether Live will ever be free on Xbox. We think that's a pretty safe no -- unlike Games For Windows, Xbox Live actually makes money, which is pretty hard to turn down, and without a ton of competitive pressure from, say, Playstation Home, it's hard to see why Microsoft would turn that funtime cash fountain off. Still, there's always hoping, right?

New iPods...new information
It is that time of year again. Summer is in full swing. The north polar ice cap is melting away, the Yankees are making a run at the playoffs and 9to5mac is hearing from Asia on this years iPod lineup. First up is the Nano which will appear in multiple colorsnot multiple color versions but each one will have a plethora of colors. The storage will double and new features will be added.

JVC's HP-FXC50 earphones promise to get closer to your eardrum

They may not conduct sound through your bones, but JVC's new HP-FXC50 earphones at least promise to pump sound deeper into your ears than your usual earbuds. That's apparently done simply by usuing a longer and thinner sound driver than usual (measuring 5.8mm in diameter), which can be "installed in the sound channel" of your ear. According to JVC, that not only cuts down on sound leakage, but makes the earphones more comfortable to wear as well (assuming you can get them back out).
