Dell's new Studio laptops in the wild

We got a look at some engineering prototype versions of Dell's new Studio 17 and Studio 15 laptops, so while they might be lacking a minor bit of polish here or there compared to the real versions, Dell certainly had these up and running a good couple months ago. We're not totally blown away by the design, but it's certainly a step in the right direction for Dell, and a few elements (like the hinge) even seem to be taking some cues from Lenovo's ultra-designed IdeaPad line. NAB attempts to delay XM / Sirius merger even further

Seit der vergangenen Woche gibt es von Nvidia Beta-Versionen der Grafiktreiber, welche Berechnungen der Physik-Engine "PhysX" auf die GPU auslagern. Apple plans cheaper nano, raises iPhone orders
Apple plans to introduce a low-cost iPod nano later this year, and has raised its iPod and iPhone orders in anticipation of strong summer sales, an analyst warns.
FBR analyst Craig Berger reports Apple to have ordered production of over 15 million iPhone 3G's and 2 million more old model iPhones this year - well above the quantity the company's been counting on selling this year.
He also reveals Apple to have ordered about 15 per cent more iPods to be produced in the third quarter, and believes Apple is also preparing to introduce iPod classic and iPod touch upgrades. The most likely launch point for these is probably September.

Laut einem aktuellen Urteil des Landgerichts München I (Az. 7 O 16402/07) sind Eltern verpflichtet, ihre Kinder darüber aufzuklären, was sie im Internet beachten müssen. In den USA ist die Mac-Version des beliebten Rollenspiels Neverwinter Nights 2 schon seit Anfang des Jahres zu haben. Noch vor ein paar Tagen glänzte Apple in einer GreenFactor-Umfrage rund um scheinbar umweltfreundliche Unternehmen. Bei den Umweltschützern von Greenpeace sieht das hingegen wieder ganz anders aus. Microsoft hat seine Unternehmenskunden in einem Brief über die Pläne für Windows 7 informiert. Windows 7 werde auf der Codebasis von Vista basieren, es seien keine grösseren Kompatibilitätsprobleme zu erwarten, so das Schreiben. Zu den Neuerungen zählen Multi-Touch-Funktionen und ein verbessertes Media-Center. Auch an den Netzwerkfähigkeiten von Windows hat Microsoft gearbeitet. Großes ß was nun?: ISO-Norm für das Nicht-Existente
Nach der Reform der deutschen Rechtschreibung sind sich viele unsicher darüber, wie man nun was schreibt. Zusammen, getrennt, groß oder klein sind die häufigsten Fragestellungen. Ebenso wichtig und doch beinahe vergessen aber ist das scharfe ß, das es bislang nur als Kleinbuchstaben gibt und in der Großschreibung als Zeichenfolge "SS" benutzt wird. Dennoch wurde jetzt ein Großbuchstabe für das "scharfe ß" als internationaler Standard in Unicode 5.1 aufgenommen.

Wie lässt sich der iPod touch retten?
Bisher kam alleine der Mac mini in den "Genuss" von Grabgesängen, jetzt leistet ihm der iPod touch Gesellschaft. Grund ist aber nicht etwa mangelndes Interesse vom Hersteller, sondern Kannibalismus oder anders ausgedrückt: das iPhone 2. Kaum ein Land bleibt von der zweiten Generation des Mobiltelefons verschont und in einigen Ländern gibt es sogar so etwas wie Konkurrenz unter den Anbietern - und dort wo es exklusiv bei einem Anbieter verbleibt, ist zumindest das Gerät günstiger als der Vorgänger.

Das sichere Entfernen von Daten ist den meisten Mac-Nutzern eine geläufige Angelegenheit. Auf dem iPhone gespeicherte Informationen aber lassen sich bislang nur oberflächlich löschen. Doch Mac OS X und iPhone OS sollen sich immer weiter einander annähern. Kein Wunder also, dass in der Betafassung von iPhone OS 2.0 jetzt eine neue Funktion entdeckt wurde, die das sichere Löschen von Daten zulässt. Blogger-Service von Google verteilt Malware
Das Anti-Malware-Projekt StopBadware hat einen Report veröffentlicht, demzufolge ausgerechnet im Netzwerk des StopBadware-Partners Google häufig infizierte Webseiten zu finden sind. Der Report hatte Google mit 4261 infizierten Webseiten als die Nummer vier der Malware-Schleudern identifiziert. Der Missbrauch des Google-Services Blogger wird für die Verbreitung bösartiger Software verantwortlich gemacht. Die kostenlosen Blogs würden bisweilen missbraucht, um auf Malware zu verlinken oder diese zu verteilen. Nach Angaben von Google werden Blogs mit bösartigem Inhalt jedoch möglichst schnell vom Netz genommen.

Powered by a Core 2 Duo T8100, associated to 2 GB of RAM, and a dedicated GeForce 8400M GT, its 2 HDMI ports make this Media center a rather well equipped device.
Sony offers 2 models
- the entry-level sports a DVD player/burner as well as a 320 GB HD: its price 1400 USD.
- the higher-end model is equipped with a BD player/burner and a larger HD of 500 GB of storage space: premium price 1900 USD.
As usual with Sony, prices are rather high, but at least the hardware is powerful enough for facing all request and evolution; something missing on the Mac mini or the Apple TV (especially the dedicated GPU)

iPhone Firmware 2.0 to Be Declared Golden Master Tomorrow?

NTT Limits Upload Speed on its Fiber Network in Japan
In Japan, most ISP have deployed a fiber network to offer ultimate transfer speed of dozen of Mb/s for their customers, allowing in consequence massive data exchange between users. To save performance as well as prevent illegal data transfer (Can we really do it?), NTT decided to limit the upload to 30 GB per day. Of course such restriction will not affect normal users, but only a small percentage of users who took advantage of the performance level of a fiber network to exchange massive amount of data (legal or illegal). Such decision was of course quite heavily criticized in Japan.

Intel hat sich angeblich gegen die Umstellung der Computer seiner 80.000 Angestellten auf Windows Vista entschieden. Sicheres Löschen in iPhone-Software 2.0
Das nebenstehende, bei AppleInsider veröffentlichte Bildschirmfoto weist auf einen deutlich intensiveren Löschvorgang als bisher hin, wenn die Option "Alle Inhalte und Einstellungen löschen" unter dem kommenden iPhone OS 2.0 angewandt wird.
Die Dauer von rund einer Stunde lässt annehmen, dass die gelöschten Daten mehrfach überschrieben und unwiderruflich gelöscht werden, beim aktuellen iPhone OS wird lediglich ein einfacher Löschvorgang durchgeführt und die Daten sind für mit dem entsprechenden Handwerkszeug ausgestattete Bösewichte wieder herstellbar.
Die Überarbeitung dieser Funktion überrascht nicht. Nachdem Apple die iPhone-Software 2.0 in gezielt auch für Business-Anwendungen optimiert hat, ist die Möglichkeit, das Gerät sicher zu löschen eine Grundvoraussetzung. Ebenso soll es zukünftig möglich sein, ein abhanden gekommenes iPhone aus der Ferne zu löschen.

Softwarelizenzen beflügeln Oracles Wachstum
Für das am 31. Mai endende vierte Quartal hat Oracle einen Umsatz von 7,24 Milliarden Dollar gemeldet, 24 Prozent mehr als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres. Alleine 3,14 Milliarden Dollar entfielen in den drei Monaten auf den Verkauf von neuen Softwarelizenzen, was einem Plus von 27 Prozent entspricht. Die Einnahmen aus der Verlängerung von vorhandenen Lizenzen und dem Produktsupport stiegen um 25 Prozent auf 2,83 Milliarden Dollar.

In this case, though, DeLorme's Earthmate PN-40 GPS device sports some seriously interesting features that we couldn't pass up. Blackberry Bold hands-on

We had a chance to play with Research In Motion's upcoming BlackBerry Bold handset tonight, and we came away happily impressed. To start things off, the keyboard felt easy enough to use, at least easier than the 8830 we're often forced to use for work email. Gone are the sharp protrusions, replaced with a nice flat surface upon which to click. Of note was the Bold's user interface. Menus are clean and easy to read (despite some strange icon choices, see below), and response time is about as quick as one could hope, especially compared to other phones out there that seem to struggle with their operating systems. Nikon D700 spy shots and info piling up

Spy shots of what could be the Nikon D700 have been floating around for a while now, but it's only today that we've gotten a full-on body shot of the DSLR. Rumored specs basically paint the unit as a D300 body with the D3's FX sensor crammed inside, and there's speculation that the lens pictured is an upgraded version of Nikon's AF-S 24-120mm VR unit. We're also hearing that it'll be introduced in August and go on sale in December for $3300, but that's all speculation until this thing actually hits.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Remember how much we hated the iPhone and its incessant GSM noise on our unshielded speakers? Some dude says he's solved all of our problems with some ingenuity and a can of Red Bull. Anyone want to test it out?
