CherryPal announces two-watt, Freescale-based cloud computer

It looks like the current ranks of green PCs are soon going to have some pretty daunting competition for the low-power throne, with upstart CherryPal announcing that it's about to bust out a cloud computer that'll consume a mere two watts of power. To hit that mark, CherryPal opted for Freescale's new 400MHz MPC5121e mobileGT processor, and eliminated all the moving parts normally found in a PC, which means no optical drive and 4GB of NAND flash memory in place of a regular hard drive. A processor that consumes almost no power
Source : DailytechEngineers at the University of Michigan developed a processor whose consumption is particularly low.
The Phoenix, consumes only 30 PicoWatts in sleep mode, and 10 times less than ATOM under operation using a voltage of only 0,5V, a new record.
To reach at this result, they reduced the size of the power gates controlling the passage of the electrons and succeeded with better controlling the inevitable leakages which usually make it necessary to increase the voltage.
We do not know if these technologies will be usable in the production of CPUs for computers, but this is not the priority of the researchers who want to focus on medical implants or other monitoring systems which could, with tiny batteries, have a very long lifetime.

Gerüchte: iPod touch-Update im September
Der iPod touch scheint sich weiterhin recht gut zu verkaufen. AppleInsider meldet aus den USA leichte Engpässe bei der Auslieferung des Players. Offensichtlich sorgt unter anderem die dortige Back-to-School-Promotion für aktuell gestiegene Absatzzahlen. Im Rahmen der zeitlich befristeten Sonderaktion erhalten Studenten beim Kauf eines Apple-Rechners einen kostenlosen iPod touch obendrauf. In Deutschland darf man wie schon im letzten Jahr im September ein vergleichbares Angebot erwarten.
Ebenfalls laut AppleInsider ist damit zu rechnen, dass Apple in Anbetracht der günstigen iPhone-Angebote auf kurz oder lang auch die Preise des iPod touch ein wenig senkt. Als voraussichtlicher Termin wird der September genannt.

Browser-Performance: Firefox 3 hängt Konkurrenten ab
Der neue Mozilla-Browser Firefox 3 hängt in Sachen Geschwindigkeit und Speicherverbrauch die Konkurrenz deutlich ab. Nintendo says its "working on a solution" to Wii storage issue

AMD dominiert x86-Prozessormarkt für Supercomputer

Finjan entdeckt Server mit Patientendaten im Internet
Das Sicherheitsunternehmen Finjan hat im Internet von Cyberkriminellen kontrollierte Server in Argentinien und Malaysia mit über 500 MByte vertraulichen Daten entdeckt. Neben Daten einer US-Fluggesellschaft und Sozialversicherungsnummern befanden sich auf den Servern vor allem medizinische Daten von Patienten, die aus Krankenhäusern und Krankenversicherungen stammten. Verkauft Apple 2008 10 Millionen Macs?

Needham analyst predicts 30 million iPhone sales in 2009
Needham & Co. analyst Charles Wolf this morning raised his firm's target price on Apple stock to $240 (from $235), predicting Apple will sell near 30 million iPhones next year.
In an extensive briefing despatched to clients this morning, Wolf shared calculations which suggest the installed base of iPhone users will reach 150 million in the next ten years - the equivalent of 5 per cent of the installed base of mobile phone owners in that year.
Wolf based his new predictions on Apple's seeming decision to drop revenue-sharing deals in most of the countries it offers the device in, and on strength of the carrier subsidies being offered with iPhone 3G, which see the mobile sold for as little as one Euro by T-Mobile in Germany and Austria.

Source : CNETA survey held amongst 300 American developers resulted in good news for Apple, and bad news for Microsoft: among the Microsoft developers, only 8% was involved in Vista-specific projects, whereas XP still attracted 49% of developers. An exact number of how many developers were coding for OS X was not mentioned, but it's said to be more than 38%.
The main reason why Vista does not attract developers, was that its integrated security 'features' make developing for the platform way more complex, and therefore more time-consuming.

Visual Voice Mail patent dispute settled
Last december, Klausner Technologies has filed a suit against Apple and AT&T for a violation of one of Klausner's patents in the Visual Voicemail service.
But now an agreement has been reached among the parties involved: Apple has decided to buy a license for Klausner's patent. As usual in such cases, the price for that license was not mentioned.
Even more, Apple has also allowed them to sell the rights for that functionality to other companies, but only if Apple does not pay more to get the exclusive rights.

Neue Top-500-Liste der Supercomputer veröffentlicht
Auf der neuesten, während der Supercomputing-Konferenz in Dresden veröffentlichten Liste der Top-500-Superrechner nimmt Deutschland gemessen an der Rechenleistung hinter den USA den zweiten Platz ein auch wenn es bei der Zahl der in der Liste aufgenommenen Rechner in der Nationenwertung hinter Großbritannien erst an dritter Stelle kommt. Apple's handheld supercomputer plan
We're looking forward to the first handheld supercomputer, thanks to an Apple-developed technology the company is now working to see accepted as an open standard.
Apple announced Snow Leopard at WWDC last week, equipped with the technology - Open Computing Language (OpenCL) - that will allow the OS to use the processing power of graphics processors for non-graphics apps.
OpenCL is based on the C programming language and has been proposed as an open standard. As part of the standard-setting process, Apple has joined a consortium of companies (the Khronos Group) to develop OpenCL as a standard.

Mehr nackte Haut in Apple-Kampagnen
Nur 157 cm misst die junge Australierin und ist damit augenscheinlich zu klein für den Job als Model, wie sie selbst bitter erfahren musste. Adobe 'pleased' with iPhone Flash - but will it appear?
Adobe this week confirmed it continues work to bring its Flash multimedia technology to the iPhone - though it still has a long way to go.
Way back in March, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen confirmed his company to be working to support Flash on the iPhone, saying his engineers were developing such a solution to work as a native iPhone application using Appe's SDKs.

China Unicom: The People's iPhone 3G
It appears Apple is closing in on a deal to offer the iPhone in China, following months of discussion with carrier networks there.
Apple has been engaged in talks with China's largest mobile carrier, the eponymously-named China Mobile. However, local reports now claim talks with that carrier have broken down, driving Apple to the arms of smaller incumbent, China Unicom.
Talks with China Mobile allegedly broke down because the companies were unable to agree a mutually acceptable revenue-sharing deal.

Apples Pläne mit OpenCL
Zu den spektakulärsten Neuerungen von OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard zählt OpenCL, eine Technologie zur Auslagerung von Rechenprozessen auf den Grafikchip. Auf Basis von OpenCL soll nun ein Standard für die parallele Bearbeitung heterogener Daten entstehen. Adobe-CEO Shantanu Narayen hat erneut die Entwicklung eines Flash-Plugins für das iPhone bestätigt. Mit den Fortschritten in der Entwicklung zeigt sich Adobe zufrieden, zumindest im iPhone Simulator scheint Flash bereits zu funktionieren. iPhone 3G: Expect demand to exceed supply
We predict short supplies of the iPhone 3G. Apple appears to have a hit on its hands with the release of the iPhone 3G, with carriers besieged by requests from potential buyers and the analysts at Morgan Stanley this morning predicting device sales will double, reaching 27 million iPhone 3G sales in 2009.
We'll start with the analysts, then take a quick look at two examples illustrating the level of demand for the product carriers are encountering.
Morgan Stanley this morning raised its price target on Apple stock to $210, up $25 from the investor's previous $185 target - and warned the impact could drive values even higher.

Pure Performance: Two Velociraptors in a Mac Pro
As we already reported it, the new high-end HDs from Western Digital, known as Velociraptor, is not compatible with computers using trays to host their HDs, such as the Mac Pro.
As we wanted to test those drives, we have installed two Velociraptors (300 GB each) in a Mac Pro. We will not provide the procedure yet, as we did not find an easy way to complete the installation. However, below are 2 photos showing the drives.
In summary, we removed the huge cooling system from both Velociraptor, and installed copper-based heatsink. We then assembled both HDs together, and added a cooling system dedicated to 3.5 HD. We then installed such package in a 5.25 metal enclosure and fix it in the space located below the Superdrive of a Mac Pro. We then only needed to plug two SATA cables between the motherboard and the Velociraptors.

Trauriger iPod als Stickbild
Ein kleiner Tipp für die Handarbeitsfraktion: Auf dem iPod will das Symbol keiner sehen, aber als Stickerei auf einem Geschirrtuch kann man dem traurigen iPod doch durchaus etwas abgewinnen. "Cross-Stitching" ist in den USA offensichtlich deutlich weiter verbreitet als hier und die altbackenen rustikalen Pferdemotive werden immer häufiger durch witzige Sprüche, Motive aus Videospielen oder eben Apple-affine Grafiken abgelöst. NEC introduces NP905 and NP901W network projectors
With InfoComm just around the bend, NEC is making sure its two newest projectors don't get (too) lost in the shuffle. Up first is the NP905, which offers up 3,000 lumens, an XGA (1,024 x 768) native resolution, 500:1 contrast ratio, built-in speaker and HDMI 1.3 socket. We got a quick look at JVC's new AVCHD camcorders today, the GD-HD40, GZ-HD30 and GZ-HD10. Of note, the HD40 comes complete with a dock for extra hookups like FireWire, and the HD40 and HD30 can shoot video in MPEG-2 for higher quality and easier editing. JVC has done some serious work on noise reduction on all of the cameras, but from the samples shown, it comes at the cost of detail -- some of the vids we saw looked more like watercolors or 3D renders than true video.
